Kitwe United central defender Shebban Kaunda has been invited to attend trials at Croatian top side HNK Hajduk Split.

Kaunda said he is expecting to leave for Croatia before the end of June.

According to the invitation, the 20-year old defender was supposed to be at Split from June 7 to August but visa hitches have delayed his departure.

Power Searching for a Keeper

4

Coach Tenant Chilumba has revealed that Power Dynamos are planning to recruit a goalkeeper during the midseason transfer window that opens next month.

Chilumba said he is looking for an experienced keeper owing to Joshua Titima’s commitment with the national team.

The coach hinted that Power will release one of the two reserve goalkeepers Joel Kanyemba or Becky Bizangi.

“I am happy with the defence and the midfield but we will just bring in one keeper,” Chilumba said.

He added:”We are looking at the goalkeepers as you know Joshua is with the national team and in case he is with the squad so we need to beef up our squad.”

Power are third on the 2014 FAZ Super League table with 27 points from 14 matches.

“We have Joel and Becky but we need some one with experience.”

FODEP Condemns PF’s use of Government resources for campaigns

2

FODEP CONDEMNS THE USE OF GOVERNMENT RESOURCES FOR POLITICAL CAMPAIGNS.

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) is concerned with the huge delegations accompanying senior government officials pretexting to be inspecting developmental projects in areas where by-elections are due.

The incident in point is in Siavonga District where almost the entire government system at provincial and district level accompanied Vice-President Dr. Guy Scott in his campaign tour of Mulimya ward ahead of local government by-election in the area.

This is extremely uncalled-for and sheer waste of government resources for personal gain by those involved when the same resources would have been used to resolve water blues and abject poverty affecting the people in the area.

FODEP wonders how Dr. Guy Scott who over the weekend used a helicopter to inspect the Bottom Road works could still be accompanied by convoys of vehicles to Chaanga area where he held a campaign meeting. Senior government officials in the area including District Commissioners, police officers and provincial team led by provincial minister among others were in attendance.

In as much as the electoral laws allows republican Vice-President to use government resources and facilities during election campaigns, a huge government delegation to such meetings is a huge cost to the country which yearns for development.

There is, therefore, need for Dr. Scott to exercise responsibility and prudence in the utilization of such public resources and facilities ahead of the Mangango parliamentary and other local government by-elections schedule for August 2014 to avoid further wastage of public resources.

To other government officials, FODEP would like to remind them that they will be contravening the electoral laws by using government resources such as vehicles for political party activities ahead of the by-elections.

FODEP is instructing all its members staying in by-election areas to report any abuse and misuse of government facilities and resources by those not entitled by law.

Western Province Permanent Secretary Augustine Seyuba has said that the people of Western province deserve development because it is their birth right.

Mr Seyuba said that government remains committed to develop western province just like any other province.

He explained that government is willing to consult widely with stakeholders on issues of developing the province.

He said this when the Western Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry paid a courtesy call on him today.

Chamber Chairperson Gibby Mukelabai appealed to government to fully involve the association in decision making processes that relate to commerce and industry in the province.

He said there is need to incorporate the Western Province Chamber of Commerce and Industry in government developmental coordinating committees both at provincial and district levels as well as council meetings.

Mr Mukelabai has since urged government to consider awarding contracts to the local business community in order for them to have a share of the national cake.

A former Copperbelt University Union representative Nicholas Sibalwa has welcomed government’s decision to increase additional four thousand bed spaces at the University in Kitwe.

Mr Sibalwa said the move is welcome as it has been the cry of Copperbelt University students for a long time now.

He was speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the issue of bed spaces in most public Universities and colleges is one which needs to be looked into seriously.

Mr Sibalwa hinted that construction of additional hostels in public Universities and colleges will reduce congestion which currently has engulfed most higher learning Institutions.

Recently, Copperbelt University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Naison Ngoma, said the university will soon receive additional student accommodation; initially about 4,000 bed spaces and later up to 10,000.

Professor Ngoma also revealed that other government initiatives, including the Private-Public Partnerships (PPPs) on hostel accommodation are firmly on track.

He,however said these were unlikely to meet increasing demand for hostel accommodation.

Vice President Guy Scott says Public Service workers play an important role in the economic development of the country.

Dr Scott said without the contribution of Civil Servants, it would be difficult for the nation to grow economically for the betterment of its citizens.

The Vice President said this today when he officiated at the African Public Service Day cerebration at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.

Dr Scott praised public service workers for their dedicated attitude to duty He also urged the public service workers to continue exhibiting hard work for the benefit of the nation.

He said government is investing heavily in the education sector in order to have literate citizens.
The Vice President stated that the nation needs to have educated civil servants who will be able to steer the country to economic prosperity.

He added that government is on track in its bid to revamp the agricultural sector.

Dr Scott said government has put in place a deliberate policy aimed at increasing the number of farmers that will benefit from the fertilize support Input programme (FISP).

And speaking at the same occasion, Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) President Leonard Hikaumba said public service workers deserve a pat on the back for their dedicated service to the nation.

Mr Hikaumba stated that civil servants are the engine of economic development in any given country.

He said it is for this reason that public service workers need to be remunerated handsomely if they are to put in their best in service delivery.

Mr Hikaumba further called on government to rescind its decision to impose a wage freeze on public service workers for the year 2014 and 2015.

He said the wage freeze will only create more problems on most public service workers thereby contributing to high poverty levels.

Mr Hikaumba advised government to find other means of raising funds as opposed to imposing a wage free on public workers.

Health Deputy Minister Chitalu Chilufya says government is constructing a cart laboratory at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka valued at 6.3 million kwacha for diagnosis of patients with heart problems.

Dr Chilufya said that the cart laboratory which will be operational this year will provide quality health care for people with heart problems in the country.

He further added that the cart laboratory will also help to decongest the waiting list that has over 400 heart cases at UTH.

Dr Chilufya disclosed that government has trained eight specialist doctors to provide specialised medical treatment to Zambians who are unable to access quality health services.

He said among the specialists who have returned from India to work at the cart laboratory include cardiac and neuro-surgeons as well as nurses and radiographers..

He said radiographers have been equipped with skills of handling the machines that were procured recently at the country’s biggest hospital.

Dr Chilufya said the heart surgeons that government has groomed are capable of handling both paediatric and adult cases.

He said government is also considering training more heart surgeons and deploying them in other health institutions across the country to ensure that people with heart conditions receive the necessary attention.

Dr Chilufya stated that government is not only upgrading clinics into fully fledged hospitals but also investing in human resource in order to improve health service delivery.

Recently the only specialist heart surgeon at UTH resigned and went back to Italy after raising contract issues .

However, Dr Chitalu said the specialist will be recalled once the cart laboratory at UTH is completed.

Meanwhile, Dr Chitalu says government has also procured CT Scans at Livingstone, Ndola and Kitwe Central Hospitals.

He said the procurement of CT Scans was a milestone in the development of the health sector as different challenges that people are faced with will easily be detected.

ZEMA defers approval of 11 construction projects around Zambia

The Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has deferred the approval of eleven proposed construction projects around the country.

ZEMA Principal Communications Officer Ireen Chipili said the Agency needs to carry out further verification and provision of more information over the projects.

She said ZEMA has deferred its decision on the 11 projects in accordance with the Environmental Management Act (EMA) No. 12 of 2011 as read with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) regulations Statutory Instrument No. 28 of 2007.

This is contained in a Press Statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Ms Chipili stated that the Agency’s decision can be withdrawn without notice if a developer fails to comply with the laid down conditions and commitments.

She said some of the projects which have been deffered for approval include a proposed cement and lime plant project in Lusaka, a lead-Zinc Recovery and Copper Processing Project in Kabwe, electrification of Mushindano and surrounding areas in Solwezi, a Service Station in Kalomo and construction of a cigarette manufacturing plant in Lusaka’s new Kasama area among others.

Last week, ZEMA approved 53 projects and rejected one project from across the country after conducted site verification inspections and reviewed the submitted Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIAs).

Anyone spreading lies about President Sata’s whereabouts risk being arrested-Mwansa Kapeya

Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya
Acting Chief Government Spokesperson Mwansa Kapeya

Acting Chief Government Spokesman Mwansa Kapeya has lashed out at people spreading stories that President Michael Sata was not invited to Israel by that country’s President Shimon Peres.

Mr Kapeya said in an interview that people and organisations raising questions about President Sata’s trip are being malicious and do not mean well.

He said the Zambian Government received the letter of invitation from President Perez last month and requesting for talks with President Sata to which the Zambian Government agreed.

Mr Kapeya said spreading what he called falsehoods about President Sata’s whereabouts risk being arrested for alarming the nation.

“What is wrong with us Zambians? We tell you where the President is and you still continue raising unnecessary questions about his trip, his health and everything. Israel invited president Sata and he agreed to go there,” he said.

He added, “I have the letter from Israel in my office, I can give you a copy of the invitation letter if you are looking for evidence. As Zambians, let us not thrive in gossip. These stories that President Sata was not invited are malicious and exaggerated.”

Speculation is growing after Government confirmed that President Michael Sata is on a working holiday in Israel.

Acting Chief Government Spokesman Mwansa Kapeya announced on Sunday that President Sata had left for Tel Aviv on a working holiday and is scheduled to meet outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

It has however emerged that Prime Minister Peres is leaving for Washington D.C on Monday for a final meeting with President Barack Obama.

The Jerusalem Post and other influential Israeli newspapers are not reporting the state visit by President Sata.

President Sata is later this week expected in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea for the African Union summit which officially opens on Wednesday.

HOME Affairs Minister Ngosa Simbyakula cuts ribbon to flag off the march past for Labour Celebrations in Kitwe

Government through the Ministry of Home Affairs has constituted a task force aimed at curbing rampant illegal land allocation and acquisition in the country.

Speaking during the launch of the taskforce in Lusaka this morning, Home Affairs Minister Ngosa Simbyakula warned those defying regulations in land allocation of stern action.

Dr Simbyakula says government is greatly concerned with the manner in which some individuals are ignoring the law and laid down procedures in the acquisition of land.

He adds that it is against this background that his ministry in collaboration with the Zambia Police service, Ministries of Lands and Local Government and Housing has constituted an inter- ministerial taskforce on illegal land allocation and acquisition in the country.

Dr. Simbyakula says the task force becomes operational with immediate effect.

And Chairperson of the Taskforce Steven Kampyongo says his team will start working today without wasting time.

Mr. Kampyongo who is also deputy minister of home affairs says the task force will curb the allocation of land without following the laid down procedure.

Opposition political parties have demanded that the Patriotic Front government tell the public the true whereabouts of republican president as opposed to hoodwinking people with conflicting half truths.

UPND Deputy Secretary General Kuchunga Simusamba said the PF government have failed to handle issues relating to the president’s health in a transparent manner and resorted to confusing the nation with conflicting statements.

Mr. Simusamba noted that everyone in the country knows the president has some health problems as recent pictures have indicated hence PF should not be hiding behind “working holiday” when the president could have gone to Israel for medical treatment.

Mr. Simusamba questioned why the president had to secretly get out of the country if he was going on working holiday while government officials were telling the nation that their president was still in the nation.

He also noted that it is not a secret that doctors were camped at State House attending to the president hence the PF should stop confusing the public.

He added that Israeli out going President Shimon Peres is not in the country as he is scheduled to meet United States president Barrack Obama therefore will not be meeting President Sata.

Meanwhile MMD National Secretary Muhabi Lungu demanded that republican vice president Dr. Guy Scott gives a formal statement in parliament today on the health of the president as well as inform the nation on the true nature of his visit as opposed to the conflicting statements that are coming from government officials.

Mr Lungu advised the PF government to stop pretending that all is well with the president when the nation is aware that the president is not fine.

“I think rather than us being entertained to half statements or contradictory statements its better that a formal statement should be made in parliament by their vice president; they should be an official statement made in parliament itemizing a number of things; 1, how long the president will be out of the country. 2, whether it is just a working holiday or whether the working holiday has some elements of health nature and obviously we as a party wish well for the president,” said Mr. Lungu.

Mr. Lungu added that the public is entitled to knowing if the president has some health related problems.

Giant airline manufacturers Airbus and Boeing have expressed interest in supplying aircrafts to the soon to be established Zambia Airlines.

Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Deputy Minister Panji Kaunda confirmed that the two firms have made formal approaches to the Zambian Government over the supply contracts.

“Yes I can confirm that Airbus and Boeing have expressed interest to offer us their latest planes to kick start our national airline. This is good development and it will help us access the kind of airplanes which should purchase as we start the project,” Mr. Kaunda said.

“At this stage, it may not be appropriate for me to disclose further details about the negotiations with the two firms but I can tell you that as Government we are fully committed to getting this project off the ground,” he said.

Mr Kaunda said the PF Government is determined to ensure that a national airline takes off before the end of 2014.

“We are determined to see to it that Zambia Airways returns to the skies. We are receiving a lot of support from various players in the aviation sector both at home and abroad and the task force on the national airline is busy looking at various options on the table,” he said.

Movie review : 22 Jump street

22jst

After making their way through high school (twice), big changes are in store for officers Schmidt and Jenko when they go deep undercover at a local college.

PROS

  • Excellent performance by the entire cast . Ice cube was exceptional in his role as Captain Dickson.
  • Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have great comedic chemistry together .
  • The story-line , though similar to the first movie , felt fresh and kept you guessing what will happen next .
  • It is an extremely hilarious movie that will leave you in a good mood .

CONS

  • If you have not watched 21 jump street , who may not get some of the jokes and situations in the movie.

CONCLUSION

After the success of 21 Jump Street ,a sequel was inevitable . Most sequels ,especially to comedies usually fail to deliver ( see  The Hangover 2) . 22 Jump street does not fall into that category . An outrageously entertaining sequel that knows exactly what it is and how to work with it through every laugh that goes bye. It is much funnier and has a better less predictable story line than the first film. An insanely hilarious and wonderfully entertaining joy-ride from start to finish. It’s loaded with big action and even bigger laughs that will leave you gasping for air .
