THE US charge de affaires David Young says the American embassy will continue talking against political violence in the country.

Mr Young says the US mission will not tire in condemning political violence because it is an affront to democracy.

He was speaking on Friday evening when the US embassy public affairs officer Janet Deutsh hosted several senior journalists and media heads to commemorate this year’s World Press Freedom Day.

Mr Young said political violence has remained an issue of concern to the US embassy.

“We will continue to raise concern over political violence. We believe dialogue is key to resolving any differences between political parties,” he said.

And Mr Young lauded Zambian journalists for their role in reporting about political violence and other matters affecting democracy.

“I really appreciate your work as journalists, especially that I was once a journalist before I ventured into diplomacy,” Mr Young said.

He said the role of journalists is critical in a democracy.

“Journalism is a sacred trust and we hope to see more media freedom in this country,” Mr Young said.
Meanwhile, veteran journalist Brighton Phiri says most citizens have left the need to press for the Access to Information (ATI) law to media alone.

Mr Phiri says the fight for the ATI legislation has been left to the media alone when the law should benefit everyone.

“The ATI law if passed will benefit all of us. Why has this battle been left to media alone?” he wondered.
Mr Phiri was speaking during a meeting on Friday afternoon that saw various media stakeholders come together at Lusaka’s Mulungushi International conference centre to deliberate on a number of issues affecting the press in Zambia.

Mr Phiri who is now communications officer for the Press Freedom Committee of the Post (PFC) called for pooling of resources by various stakeholders to advance the cause of the media.

“This crusade must not be left to the media alone. Everyone must get involved,” he said.

At the same function, veteran media trainer Fackson Nkandu said journalists should not hindered from doing their work because they are partners in development.

And the 2014 World Press Freedom Day organising committee chairperson Henry Kabwe said ATI law once passed will help government monitor the money that it releases for various projects.

“Our journalism must now be that of advocacy. We must move our nation forward. This therefore makes the ATI critical ,” Mr Kabwe said.

Lusaka Mayor Mulenga Sata has forced cash strapped Lusaka City Council to splash out K 12,000 for a new television set for his office.

Mulenga is President Sata’s son who was installed as Mayor last month.

He has not wasted any time to make his demands known to the council management by demanding that a new plasma TV be installed in his ceremonial office.

Mulenga has also demanded that his office be installed with Wi-Fi internet.

Lusaka City Council is one of the local authorities that is struggling financially and fails to pay its workers on time.

Lusaka City Council Public Relations Manager Mulunda Habeenzu confirmed the developments in an interview and defended the demands from the mayor’s office.

“As a council, we have gone ahead to purchase the plasma TV and put up internet in the Mayor’s office as part of our modernisation programme. We want to do a face lift to that important office because there are a number of dignitaries that visit the Mayor and so the office must be in good shape,” Mr Habeenzu said.

He added, “We considered the request from the Mayor and as management we approved because it is good for the image of the council. LCC is a very important institution in the nation and the Office of the Mayor should represent that fact.”

Mr Habeenzu said Mulenga is not being extravagant with his demands.

“I don’t think these are extravagant demands. Yes it is a ceremonial office and he doesn’t work from there all the time but he hosts many important visitors in that office and it needs to be upgraded.”

Don’t blame Levy for the KCM deal, Magande leaps to the defence of late President

Former Finance Minister Ngandu Magande has jumped to the defence of late President Levy Mwanawasa over the controversial sale of Konkola Copper Mines to Vedanta Resources Plc.

Mr Magande said President Mwanawasa was a very upright man and does not deserve condemnation over the KCM transaction.

He said President Mwanawasa was faced with a difficult situation after Anglo American pulled out of KCM.

“The man did the right thing to do. His administration was under so much pressure after Anglo left. The Mwanawasa Government was losing US$ 1 million pay day to keep the mine afloat. It was important that a new owner with strong financial muscle is found to run the mine,” Mr Magande said.

He added, “As a nation, let us not read so much into the sale price. The US$ 25 million is very low if you consider today’s price levels but nobody expected copper prices to hit these high levels. When the late President was negotiating the sale of Konkola, his main preoccupation was safeguarding the jobs because people were going to riot if that mine closed even for a day.”

Mr Magande also clarified that he was not the Minister of Finance when the mine was sold.

“Let me clarify the notion that I was the one who signed off the purchase agreement. I was not a Minister in the Mwanawasa administration during the KCM transaction. I joined his government in June 2004. The Minister at the time was late Emmanuel Kasonde,” he said.

Mr Magande said he believes Dr Mwanawasa and his team did what was the best for the nation at the time given the circumstances.

Meanwhile, a reliable source from Zambia Revenue Authority says it would be prudent for ZRA to check whether the statement from Vedanta Chairman Mr Agarwal is at variance with profits declared.

“Obviously it would be prudent for Zambia Revenue Authority to check whether the statement from Mr Agarwal is at variance with profits declared and if need be make tax adjustments with possible resultant penalties and interest,” the ZRA source said.

In a video posted on You Tube, Mr Agarwal stated that KCM is making a minimum of US$500 million per year from the time the mine was acquired by Vedanta Resources Plc.

Mbita Chitala calls for resignation of PF economic advisors to save free falling Kwacha

29
Mbita Chitala
Dr Mbita Chitala

Dr Mbita Chitala has advised the financial and fiscal management at the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Zambia to resign so that the kwacha can be saved from the free fall depreciation.

Dr Chitala who is former finance deputy minister in the MMD administration and also Zambia Research Foundation Executive Director said the kwacha was losing value due to poor economic management that led to the introduction of SI 33 and SI 55 and their subsequent revocation.

He said investors that were removing their moneys from the local economy had lost trust in the current leadership managing the country’s financial control.

The Kwacha has continued to depreciate hitting K6.61 and K6.63, buying and selling against the dollar respectively as of yesterday.

The local currency has been rated Africa’s worst performing currency and second in the world after Ukraine.

From trading about US$1 to K3800 in 2011 as President Michael Sata was taking over power, the kwacha has weakened in drastic fashion and may soon hit the K7 (7000) against US$1 rate.

“The major problem we are facing is that of confidence in the economy and our managers. After the revocation of Statutory Instruments Number 33 and 55, the same managers are managing the economy.

Ordinarily, it was going to be good for those managers to either resign on their own, or be shifted to other institutions so that new people come in,” Dr Chitala said.He said most investors had shifted their assets from Zambia.

“Those people who brought in SI 33 and 55 which led people to shift their assets from Zambia to foreign accounts have not yet returned their money as they are not yet convinced that these managers who had hurt them so much have now become better and consistent managers namely the people at the ministry of Finance and the Bank of Zambia,” Dr Chitala said.He insisted that the best the government could do was to shift the financial managers to other government institutions and appoint new people in those areas so that confidence could be restored.

A number of opposition political parties have condemned the actions of a suspected PF cadre who rammed into opposition United Party for National Development supporter on Friday.

The opposition leaders said it was unfortunate that a person can go that far in his hatred for political opponent in a democratic nation like Zambia.

ADD President Charles Milupi said Zambia is democratic nation which should not tolerate such actions from political opponents.

He said it was unfortunate that a PF cadre could do such a thing in a peaceful country like Zambia adding that such actions should be condemned with the contempt it deserves.

He added that such actions are the more reason why the country need a new constitution which will protect innocent citizens from such unwarranted attacks from cadres of the ruling party who feel they are above the law.

And ZADECO president Langton Sichone wondered what the PF are turning country into.

Mr. Sichone said Zambian are not known for waring or turning against each but for their peaceful coexistence which PF cadres are trying to undermine.

He further observed that if crime was committed by a member of the opposition government and officials from the ruling PF would have gone on anthills screaming for justice for the injured which he said is not the case as both government and PF officials have chosen to remain mute on the issue.

APC president Nason Msoni says justice minister Wynter Kabimba has continued to hold on to the draft constitution due to his personal interest in the document.

Speaking in an interview Mr. Msoni said Mr. Kabimba’s ambition of wanting to become president is the main reason making justice Minister not release the draft constitution as he knows that the current constitution is defective and can easily be manipulated.

He said, “it is clear that Mr. Kabimba has ambitions of taking over from president Sata as this can clearly be seen in his campaigns which he is busy conducting country wide and he thinks holding on to the constitution will help him because he knows that some clauses such as the 50+1 do not favour him he stands.”

He advised the Minister to lying to himself that he can stand in the of the people’s wishes on the need for the constitution saying no one stands in the way of the people and wins as people always comes out victors.

And Mr. Msoni has warned the PF government against tempering with the draft constitution in any way.

He said the people of Zambia knows what is contained in the draft hence no one should change anything unless it is the people themselves that decides to remove or add something.

Mr. Msoni further said the constitution is a people’s document that Zambians decided to give themselves therefore no individual should try to doctor the document as people know what is best for them.

“We know what is contained in that document and anyone thinking to themselves that they can manipulate what is inside are cheating themselves as Zambians will not let them do that.

We will reject anything that has been changed, even if it is just a coma, a full stop or sentence that has been removed or added and take the people entrusted with the document to task,” Mr Msoni said.

Mr Msoni also advised Zambians to take a firm stand against the PF government and ensure that they demand for the immediate release of the document.

Government says the levels of piracy in the country is worrying and has for this reason called for concerted efforts to effectively fight the vice.

Commerce, Trade and Industry minister Robert Sichinga says it was for this reason that his ministry is currently working on a bill that will protect the creative works such as tradition dances and ceremonies in the country.

Mr. Sichinga said Zambia has rich culture and tradition that needs to be protected so as to maximize the benefits because the value in the creation and use of intellectual property for economic development has not only been recognized in Zambia but globally.

“Today, universal acceptance and strategic use of intellectual property offer an opportunity for individuals, businesses and countries to convert their creative resources into economic assets capable of generating wealth and contributing to a more secure future, “he said.

The minister said this during the commemoration of World Intellectual Property day at the Freedom statue under the theme: “MOVIES A GLOBAL PASSION”

And some unscrupulous business people are reportedly putting counterfeit hologram stickers on some audio-visual products which they are selling to unsuspecting consumers despite the October 31, 2013 deadline.

Cycorps Managing Director Kingsley Nkonde says some unscrupulous people in the music and film industry have already started producing counterfeit hologram stickers which they are putting on audio and visual products which are being sold to unsuspecting consumers.

Mr. Nkonde said following a successful sensitization campaign on the introduced hologram in the country spear headed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services (MIBS) in all the ten provinces, consumers have been looking for audio visual products with a hologram.

He added that this has now forced pirates to start producing counterfeit holograms.

Mr. Nkonde then presented a musical DVD for Malawian Skeffa Chimoto which has a combination of a Zambian and the Malawian hologram to the minister.

He said this was being done because consumers are now demanding to see holograms before they buy any audio-visual product being sold on the street or in the shops.

And Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) acting assistant registrar Sunduzwayo Zimba says intellectual property is a very important tool for economic growth of any nation.

Mr. Zimba said at the same function that intellectual property rights shape each stage of the film-makers journey from the script to the screen.

He said this year’s theme cannot over emphasised because it has come at a better time when most of the film producers and script writers alike have not fully benefited from their works.

Meanwhile, the intercepted counterfeit Samsung phones valued at K867, 000 have been destroyed.

The counterfeit products were destroyed at the Central Recycling Company yesterday in the presence of the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), Samsung representatives in Zambia and Cycorps Zambia Limited officials.

And Cycorps Managing Director Nkonde reaffirmed his organization ’s commitment to rid the country of counterfeit products.

Mr. Nkonde said the Government has lost millions of kwacha through counterfeit Samsung phones that come into the country without paying tax at the point of entry into the country.

“These counterfeit products are just smuggled into the country and government has continued lose millions of kwacha through such illegal activities, ” Said Mr. Nkonde.

Farmers in Kaputa District have advised government to increase this year’s maize floor price at K85 per 50 kilogram bag.

And Kaputa Central Camp Agricultural Committee (CAC) Chairperson, Philemon Kapoma suggested that government needs to consider the price of fertilizer and other costs when coming up with the price.

Meanwhile, Kaputa has been allocated with six satellite depots where the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) will be buying the maize from.

The farmers say their demand for increased floor price was because the current floor price has remained at K65 last four seasons.

ZANIS reports that the concerned farmers said this in an interview at the Kaputa Central Agricultural Camp Show yesterday.
They said government needs to look into their plight and increase the floor price.

The over 100 farmers who attended the Camp show over half said they want the floor price increased to K85 while a few proposed K75.

And Kaputa Central Camp Agricultural Committee (CAC) Chairperson, Philemon Kapoma suggested that government needs to consider the price of fertilizer and other costs when coming up with the price.

MMD president Nevers Mumba

MMD president Nevers Mumba says the lack of state visits to Zambia by other presidents is hurting the country economically.

Dr Mumba said state visits by other presidents is not only meant for the presidents to interact but that presidents move with potential investors in their entourages whenever they visit other countries especially those from developed nations.

He observed that this is the longest period that a president has not visited Zambia in the history the country.

Dr. Mumba said those in government cheating themselves that it does not matter whether a president visits the nation should stop as state visits of other presidents raises the profile of the country which gives confidence to foreign investors to consider investing in the nation.

And Dr. Mumba has observed that presidents are scared of visiting the country because of the unpredictable behavior of the republican president.

[pullquote]The president of Malawi was invited to officiate at some event but she just acknowledged the invitation and opted to go some where else.[/pullquote]

The opposition leader said president Sata’s behavior is worrisome and calls on him to be careful with what he says when is in presence of other leaders as his careless remarks gives a negative impression of the country to other national leaders.

“Who want to visit a country when the president of that country insults anyone who is near him.

The president of Malawi was invited to officiate at some event but she just acknowledged the invitation and opted to go some where else.

Our president was invited by the Nambian president and when it was time for eating our president chose to abstain from the meal with an excuse that he can’t be having a banquet when his people are suffering, that is not how you behave among your fellow national leaders.”

He added other national leaders are scared of visiting Zambia because they don’t want to be embarrassed with some of the off cuff remarks of president Sata.

“Who would want to be on the receiving end of one Mr. Sata’s untimely comments? No leader wants to come here and be embarrassed by our president in presence of people,” Dr Mumba noted

Ministry of Labour Directs Armcor Security Company to settle the salaries owed to its workers

5

THE Ministry of Labour and Social Security directed management of Armcor Security Company to settle the salaries owed to its workers.

The directives followed the reports that workers at the company were protesting over non-payment of salaries.

Ministry of Labour and Social Security Chief Planner for Press and Public Relations Mirriam Mukonde Zimba said yesterday that following the meeting, Armcor management assured the ministry that it would pay outstanding salaries to its workers by 23rd of May 2014

Ms Zimba said the ministry of Labour and Social Security directed that the payments should be implemented without fail as agreed in the meeting.

“Management of Armcor and three unions representing security guards were summoned for a meeting with a view to normalizing operations of the security firm particularly payment of salaries,” she said.

Three unions namely National Union for Safety and Asset Care Workers (NUSCAW), Zambia Union of Security Officers and Allied Workers (ZUSOAW) and the United National Union of Private Security Employees (UNUPSE) attended the tripartite meeting.

She said management informed the ministry that the challenges the company was facing were as a result of maladministration by the previous management which had led to the current cash flow problems which they were trying to resolve.

The two parties assured the ministry that they would go and address the workers and revert to the ministry for an update.

OVER 69 school girls in Eastern Province have fallen pregnant this year alone.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Dr Chileshe Mulenga disclosed when he addressed hundreds of school pupils who carried a solidarity campaign towards ‘BRING BACK THE GIRLS’ for the over 200 girls who were abducted by Boko Haram in Nigeria in Chipata yesterday that the number of girls falling pregnant in the province was worrying.

Dr Mulenga said Government should not see such sad statistics where girls were falling pregnant in one term alone.

“I saw a very sad report which showed that more than 69 girls in the region fell pregnant this term alone. We don’t want to see those sad developments,” he said.

Dr Mulenga said the development of Zambia requires girls and boys to concentrate in education.

He said Government would like the children to concentrate on the education.

Dr Mulenga assured the people that the Zambian Government has joined the campaign to demand the release of the girls who were being held hostage by the Boko Haram group.

Speaking earlier, Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) regional coordinator Dorothy Ndhlovu appealed to the government of Nigeria to take necessary measures to ensure the immediate release and safe return of the girls to their families and communities.

“Ensure that all the girls and their families are provided with adequate psycho-social and support when rescued to help them cop with the trauma that they have suffered,”Ms Ndhlovu said.

She said what happened in Nigeria should be a wakeup call for Zambians and the Zambian Government to enhance the protection of the children.

“Cases of defilement and forced marriages continue to perpetuate against children. As we for brining back the abducted children in Nigeria. We also call for an end against child abuse in Zambia,”Ms Ndhlovu said.
