Government is concerned with the poor performance of pupils in Nakonde district in Northern Province with an exception of pupils from Mwenzo Girls High School who have continued to perform exceedingly well .
District commissioner Billy Silwimba has since directed the office of the District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) to ensure that results at all levels in Nakonde district are improved, come 2012.
Mr. Silwimba said the DEBS office should also ensure that the strategic plan being employed by the district is fully implemented in all schools without fail.
Mr. Silwimba was speaking in Nakonde today during a one day strategic meeting for head teachers in Nakonde district held in the council chambers.
The strategic meeting is aimed at finding ways of improving results in the schools.
The District Commissioner said his office stands ready to support the DEBS office in whatever measure it may take as a way of ensuring that results in the district are improved such as the strategic plan.
Mr. Silwimba said there is great need to improve results because education plays a critical role in the social-economic development of the country adding that it is a vehicle through which opportunities for growth, poverty reduction, productivity and human development are realised.
He said that education is critical in enhancing a country’s’ social economic development as it builds people’s abilities in terms of skills to receive and process information for live hood choices saying this is the reason why the Government has embarked on an ambitious programme of constructing and rehabilitating school infrastructure especially at basic level.
Mr. Silwimba said 6 new schools have been built, 56 new classrooms added to already existing schools, 4 schools completely rehabilitated and 2,274 desks distributed to various schools across the border town.
And speaking at the same function DEBS Clifford Sichilima said the good performance of a pupils largely depends on the teacher.
Mr. Sichilima said head teachers should therefore ensure that teachers are always available in class to teach saying quality education can only be attained if teachers are always available in class to impart knowledge to the pupils.
