We take a brief look at Zambia’s second Group B opponent at the Canada
2007 Fifa Under-20 World Cup Spain’s 20-man team for the tournament
that kicks off on July 1.
In his 20-man squad, Spain Under-20 Coach Gines Melendez’s most
prominent call-up is Manchester United defender Gerard Pique.
Pique, who is currently on loan to La Liga club Real Zaragoza, is one
of four players with Spanish top-level experience Melendez has picked
for their outing in Canada.
Others with La Liga experience are defender Antonio Barragán and
striker Adrián Lopez both of Deportivo de La Coruna and midfielder
Matcos Garcia from Villarreal.
Two-thirds of Melendez’s Canada-bound team was part of Spain’s 2006
UEFA Under-19 Championship.
Melendez has also given a junior call-up to 19-year-old Nigerian-born
midfielder Sunday Stephen of Spanish division 2 team Polideportivo
Ejid.
Stephen, a subject of a Euro 2 million transfer to Valencia next
season, is also being sort by the Nigerian coach Bert Vogts to play
for the country of his birth at senior level.
Meanwhile, the team is dominated by six players from Real Madrid.
Leading the list of Real players are Under-20 strikers Alberto Bueno
and Juan Mata who scored three and four goals respectively at last
years UEFA Under-19 Championship.
Goalkeeper Antonio Adán is the other prominent Real player in the team
who plays for the La Liga club’s division two reserve side Real Madrid
CF Castilla.
Adan also captained Spain’s Under-19 to the 2006 UEFA Under-19 crown.
Zambia will open their campaign against Jordan on July 1 on Burnaby
while Spain faces Uruguay on the same day in the second game at the
same venue.
