Nakambala Leopards ended Kabwe Warriors two-match unbeaten run to see the hosts record only their second win of the season in Mazabuka

The games lone goal came in the 55th minute through Signs Chibambo.

FOREST RANGERS 0- ZANACO 0.

Defending league champions Zanaco FC’s 100 percent run ended today after drawing 0-0 at Forest Rangers in Ndola where they also finished by the same score line in the two sides previous top-flight meeting there last season.

Zanaco had prior to today’s result at Dola Hill won all their three league matches since the start of campaign.

NATIONAL ASSEMBLY 0- ROAN UNITED 0.

Roan United continue to make steady progress moving slowly away from the drop zone when today they collected 1 point at National Assembly FC in Lusaka where the match finished scoreless.

ZAMTEL 1- CITY OF LUSAKA 1.

Zamtel FC scored their debut top-flight goal today after drawing 1-1 with fellow promoted side City of Lusaka at Musa Kasonka stadium in Ndola .

Joseph Mwenya scored for Peter Kaumba’s Zamtel while Marvin Chipampe got the other goal for visiting City.

LUSAKA DYNAMOS 1- ZESCO UNITED 1.

Lusaka Dynamos recovered from their humiliating 4-0 away defeat on Saturday to new leaders Young Arrows after drawing 1-1 at home this afternoon with visiting Zesco United.

Dynamos were on their way to victory after Lameck Banda put them ahead in the 59th minute but Zesco stole a late equalizer through Enoch Sakala in the 89th minute to see the two sides share the points.

POWER DYNAMOS 0- YOUNG ARROWS 1.

Promoted Young Arrows are the surprise new leaders at the end of the Easter weekends action after humiliating Power Dynamos 1-0 away at Arthur Davies stadium in Kitwe.

A 38th minute goal from Kruger Mwansa settled the game when he slotted in a double-rebound off goalkeeper Rabson Muchelenganga following some casual defending by the hosts.

Power huffed and puffed throughout against a resolute Young Arrows, who are unbeaten in two successive league games, but failed to spark after enjoying a good spell prior to the winning goal.

NCHANGA RANGERS 1- KONKOLA BLADES 2.

A brace by striker Precious Mpondela secured the 3 points for Konkola Blades in their derby against neighbors Nchanga Rangers to help end the Chililabombwe sides’ two-match losing streak.

Mpondela struck in the 48th minute before while Rangers equalized in six minutes after the hour mark through veteran defender Justin Kunda.

The Blades striker made sure of the 3 points with his second of the day in the 84th minute to bring his total tally of the season to three goals.

Adherence to marriage vows key to long-lasting marriages – Sayifwanda

Minister of Gender and Women in Development Sarah Sayifwanda has advised married people to keep and strictly live by their wedding
vows if their marriages were to last long.

Ms. Sayifwanda said wedding vows of loving each other till death were binding through out one's life and therefore married people should always remember them.

She was speaking last evening at a wedding ceremony of one Sunday Museba, who married Olga Mhango at the Zambia Air force mess in Chamba valley.

The minister asked relatives of the new couple not to interfere in planning their stay together.

She also called on the new couple to fear God and consult him in all their needs, saying it was only in God that all answers to the challenges of life could be found.

Ms. Sayifwanda noted that Christianity demanded that married people live together happily through out their lives hence the need for them to always read the Bible for
guidance and correction.

Chief Naluama of Mazabuka has issued a stern warning to Namwala Member of Parliament, Major Robbie Chizyuka and his Indigenous Rights
Committee to stop sowing seeds of discontent among villagers earmarked for resettlement by Albidon Zambia Limited, Munali Nickel mine.

The Chief told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that his warning should be taken seriously to avoid embarrassment.

Chief Naluama said he is disappointed to learn that Major Chizyuka decided to address an illegal meeting in which he allegedly incited villagers to resist the
resettlement programme and refuse to move to the new housing units built by the Mine.

The Chief said he is aware that the some opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) Members of Parliament have teamed up to frustrate the investor
from carrying out construction works after their bid to throw away the application to approve the 2,100 hactares of land during a recent full council meeting failed.

Chief Naluama said he will not allow lawlessness to take root in his chiefdom by enemies of development.

The traditional ruler also questioned which people Major Chizyuka and his Indigenous People’s Rights are claiming to represent when they do not even hail from his
chiefdom.

Chief Naluama advised Major Chizyuka not to waste his time misleading people because the stage at which the resettlement programme has reached was irreversible.

But Major Chizyuka said no one has got the right to stop him from protecting disadvantaged communities.

He said he has instructed villagers affected by the opening of the mine not to accept to be resettled at the new farmland bought by the mine.

Meanwhile, Mine Manager, Sixtus Mulenga expressed disappointment at the level of frustration from the opposition UPND.

Dr Mulenga said the investor is there to open up development adding that the mine management has not violated any law to deserve such harassment and intimidation.

He expressed shock to learn that a meeting had been called without the knowledge of the mine, chief and local government leadership.

Yesterday villagers of Mugoto area in Mazabuka District of Southern Province expressed anxiety about their possible displacement by Albidon Nickel Mine which is
seeking to expand its business interest in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the villagers in Mugoto today, Indigenous People’s Rights Association Chairman Joshua Ng’andu expressed worry that the expansion of mining
operations by the Australian mining company would dislodge the villagers.

Mr. Ng’andu said the further expansion of mining operations would be to the disadvantage of the local community.

He said although Albidon Nickel Mine is a welcome investment, steps should be taken to ensure that the villagers are not disadvantaged.

Mr. Ng’andu said long-term interests of the local community should be taken into account by both the mining company and government authorities.

He said the mining firm should demonstrate its social responsibility by ensuring that the livelihood of the villagers is taken into account.

Mr. Ng’andu lamented that over 2000 villagers risk being displaced by the expansion of the mining operations in the area.

He said the villagers, who are largely pastoral farmers, risk loosing their herding-land and their crop fields thereby threatening their household food
security.

Mr. Ng’andu further lamented that the villagers would also loose their investment which they pumped into the building of their homes and other structures.

And Namwala Member of Parliament Major Robby Chizyuka said Albidon Nickel Mine, an Australian company, did not have the right to displace the indigenous people.

He said the expansion of the mining operations would inevitably dislodge the villagers and force them to relocate to water-logged areas, which are not habitable.

Major Chizyuka said the interests of local communities should be top of the agenda of any investor wishing to invest in any locality.

He said issues of compensation and social responsibility should be cleared before an investor seeks expansion of their business interests.

Urgent meeting kicks off in Mazabuka to address the Albidon Mine expansion overtures

A meeting aimed at resolving the controversy surrounding the approval of a land application for Munali Nickel Mine by councillors has kicked
off in Mazabuka. 

The urgent meeting which has been called by the United Party for National Development, Southern Province executive committee is being held at Mazabuka Youth
Project.

In attendance is Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo, Chikankata Member of Parliament Munji Hbeenzu and Bennie Mweemba of Magoye constituency.

Others in attendance are UPND National Vice Chairman for Elections Philip Maambo and all area the councillors. 

UPND Provincial secretary Mayaba Hanseluka confirmed the development to ZANIS in Mazabuka today. 

Mr Hanseluka said the provincial leadership's role is to harmonise the differences among party members in a bid to foster unity in the party. 

Three days ago, Mazabuka Mayor Edmund Cheelo complained to ZANIS that some high handed politicians are lobbying for his expulsion from the party for allowing
councillors to support the motion to approve the entire 2,100 hactares of land to Albidon Zambia Limited, Munali Nickel mine. 

18 councillors voted in support of the motion while Six lost. 

During the ground breaking ceremony of the construction of the Albidon Zambia Limited, Munali Nickel mine, President Mwanawasa praised the eighteen councillors
for supporting the investment.

Government comes to the aid of flood victims

The Office of the Vice President has sent a speedy boat to the Mazabuka District Disaster Management committee to enable the committee visit
areas threatened by floods following the rising water levels in the Kafue River caused by the opening of flood gates at Itezhi tezhi dam. 

District commissioner, Misheck Chiinda, disclosed this to ZANIS in Mazabuka today. 

Mr Chiinda said the office of the vice president deserves commendation for the quick response to the plight of people living along the Kafue basin. 

He said the provision of the boat will enable officers sensitise villagers on the impending flood threat and advise them to relocate to higher grounds. 

Last Friday, Mr Chiinda made a passionate appeal to the office of the vice president to come to the rescue of villagers whose lives are threatened by floods by providing
necessary logistics to the Mazabuka District Disaster Management to enable officers visit the affected areas. 

Mr Chiinda said reports reaching his office, indicated that only a few villagers have relocated to higher grounds despite rising water levels.

KABWE WARRIORS 2- FOREST RANGERS O.

Kabwe Warriors recorded only their second win of the season to stay unbeaten for second game in roll and also maintain their 100 percent home run since the start of the year.

Ken Banda put the Railwaymen ahead in the 2nd minute before new boy Emmanuel Mayuka scored his 6th goal of the season five minutes after the restart for him go top of the scorers chart.

Forest are second from bottom after Saturdays win with 3 points from as many draws since the start of the season with five games played by the Ndola club.

ROAN UNITED 2- NAKAMBALA 1.

Roan United left the bottom of the table for the first time since this year to give Dickson Makwaza and Paul Mulenga some breathing space with a first league win of the season.

Today Roan beat Nakambala Leopards 2-1 in the two side’s first ever top-flight meeting at Kafubu stadium in Luanshya.

Goals from ex-Zambia junior international Losper Muma and Arthur Kaseleka handed Roan their first league win of the season.

Ex-Roan player Ken Mwaba scored his second goal of the season with a consolation for the visitors.

ZANACO 1- ZAMTEL 0.

Zanaco recorded their third successive league win in as many games played this season when they beat promoted Zamtel FC 1-0 at Sunset stadium in the two side’s first ever top-flight meeting.

A 36th minute goal from midfielder Jack Chileshe secured the 3 points for the defending league champions.

ZESCO UNITED 1- NATIONAL ASSEMBLY 0.

Wedson Nyirenda’s Zesco United returned to winning ways after losing 1-0 away to Nakambala Leopards last weekend by the same margin.

An 11th minute goal by striker Nicholas Zulu secured the 3 points for the Ndola club.

CITY OF LUSAKA 1- RED ARROWS 0.

City too returned to winning ways today after two consecutive defeats and a draw.

The Woodlands stadium side beat 2004 league champions Red Arrows 1-0 thanks to the games line goal scored by Zambia Under 23 striker Mazuba Mukandawire-his 4th goal of the campaign.

YOUNG ARROWS 4- LUSAKA DYNAMOS 0.

Lusaka Dynamos came back to Earth with a thud today away at Nkoloma stadium in Lusaka when they were crushed 4-0 by promoted Young Arrows.

Shaft Katuka, put Young Arrows ahead in the 14th minute.

On-loan striker Chiwanki Liyangi from Power Dynamos made it 2-0 on 25 minutes with his 3rd goal of the season before his former teammate at the Kitwe side Abraham Mwamba made it 3-0 going into the break in the 34th minute.

Lottie Phiri wrapped up the hosts fine day at the office with the 4th, 21 minutes after the restart.

KONKOLA BLADES 0-POWER DYNAMOS 1.

Power Dynamos left Chililabombwe with their second successive away league win at Konkola stadium since last august after beating hosts Konkola Blades 1-0.

Under 23 winger Simon Bwalya scored the all important goal for Power in the 68th minute.

KK discharged from UTH

First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda has been discharged from the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

The Chief of Staff at the office of the First President Godwin Mfula confirmed to ZANIS that Dr Kaunda who was yesterday admitted to UTH for observation due to a sudden rise in his High Blood Pressure has since been discharged.

Mr. Mfula disclosed that Dr Kaunda’s situation is under control and has since been told by his medical doctors that he could resume work within the next few days.

He said, Dr. Kaunda has expressed gratitude to the Medical Team that took care of him for their professionalism and hard Work.

Ismaily Rally To Beat Buffaloes

Green Buffaloes this evening lost 2-1 away to hosts Ismaily in their Caf Confederation Cup last 16 round, 1st leg match played in Cairo.

The two sides were locked at 0-0 going into the break before Buffaloes took the lead after the restart when midfielder Morgan Hanjeema put the visitors ahead on 57minutes.

Buffaloes had defender Patrick Masosa and striker Sekelanu Mwale sent off.

Buffaloes lead lasted until the last 20 minutes when Abdallah El Said equalized in the 78th minute.

Omar Gamal made sure of victory with the winner in stoppage time to give Ismaily a slender but vital edge to take into the return leg to be played in Lusaka on April 21.

Buffaloes will need to win by one goal in the final leg in a fortnight’s time to secure their pre-group stage place.

Nkana FC remained top of the Faz division 1 north today after recording their sixth successive win since the start of the season after defeating INDENI 2-0 in a week 6 Good Friday fixture played at Wusakile stadium in Kitwe today.

A first half brace by striker Morgan Kapembwa in the 21st and 39th minutes handed the fallen record 11-time top-flight champions the valuable 3 points to see them stay firmly in the driving seat.

Nkana dominated INDENI for most of the game albeit at an almost casual pace especially in the opening half in which the visitors hardly had a sniff at their hosts’ goal.

INDENI looked more accretive after the break when Nkana took their foot off the pedal.

However, the visitors from Ndola still failed to come anywhere close to raising their game especially in attack despite enjoying vast amounts of the ball.

Then in the 74th minute, Nkana goalkeeper Kelvin Mulenga almost presented INDENI with a consolation goal following a howler from the Zambia Under 23 player.

Mulenga’s miss-kick on the edge of his area flew over his head and bounced helplessly towards his goalmouth but the ball was saved from going in after a late goal line clearance by an Nkana defender for a corner.

Nkana are on a maximum 18 points from six matches, three more than second placed Lime Hotspurs who beat bottom of the table Police Blue Eagles 2-0 in Ndola this afternoon.

In the days other division 1 north matches played, Mufulira Blackpool beat visiting Medical Stars 1-0 while Prison Leopards and Muchindu drew 1-1 in Mufulira.

Mid-table Chambishi FC were 1-0 winners at troubled former giants Mufulira Wanderers today and Afrisports beat Ndola United 1-0 in Kitwe.

Govt. releases K1billion for Isoka district hospital upgrade

Government has released K1 billion for the upgrade of Isoka district hospital in Northern Province.

Isoka district commissioner Henry Mukungule who confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS in Isoka today, said the K1 Billion which is already in the bank in Isoka is meant for the construction of a few structures to enable the health institution run smoothly.

He named the structures to be constructed as a mortuary, laundry, store room, laboratory and a kitchen.

The district commissioner appealed to the contractor who was currently constructing a maternity wing as part of the K 1.3 billion which the government released in February last year for the construction of more structures at the new hospital site to speed up the works.

Mr. Mukungule said Roll Stone Global Construction Company which was currently working on its final building should speed up its works so that a new contractor engaged to do the works can move to the site.

And residents of Isoka have commended the government for its commitment towards the completion of the new hospital.

One of the residents Wankumbu Mugala told ZANIS that people in the area had passed through difficult times during the six years the hospital had been operating under make- shift structures following the collapse of the main buildings way back in 2000.

Mugala said it was good that the government has put up modern structures at the new site with modern facilities inside saying the hospital constructed in Isoka was a kind by itself in the province and hoped the health staff will be motivated to put in their best in executing their duties.

And Isoka hospital project committee secretary Terry Mukuka has suggested that a local contractor be engaged to finish the remaining structures at the new hospital site because contractors outside the district had proved not be serious with their works and were always delaying the completion of their works for reasons best known to themselves.

Mr. Mukuka said residents of Isoka were in a hurry to see the construction of the hospital completed in good time especially that the government was always releasing the funds on time.

The Environmental Council of Zambia, ECZ, has approved 12 projects that include the proposed establishment of a 33KV electricity line at
Munali Hills Nickel Mine in Mazabuka district.

This is in accordance with the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act Cap 204 of the Laws of Zambia Regulation 3, 1, of the Environmental Impact
Assessment, EIA, Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 28 of 1997.

ECZ Senior Communications Officer, Justin Mukosa, announced this in a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

The other approved EIA include for that for the development of of the Mwambashi Copper Deposit in Chingola, Diatomite Mine in Mongu, Katanga Resources Large Scale
Prospecting, construction of a Waste Rock Crusher Plant in Kitwe and the Construction of a 33KV Power Line for the Electrification of Zambezi  Portland
Cement. 

Others include Development of Information Technology Project for the Provision of Broadband Data Communications, the Mkushi Extension (Mtunga) located near the Old

How much do you know about Easter?

Easter is the most important Christian festival. Christians are followers of Jesus Christ who lived about 2000 years ago in a country called Palestine. They believe that Jesus was the son of God. In Christian countries Easter is celebrated as the religious holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God.
The Christian celebration of Easter embodies a number of converging traditions with emphasis on the relation of Easter to the Jewish festival of Passover, or Pesach, from which is derived Pasch, another name used by Europeans for Easter. Passover is an important feast in the Jewish calendar which is celebrated for 8 days and commemorates the flight and freedom of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt

The early Christians, many of whom were of Jewish origin, were brought up in the Hebrew tradition and regarded Easter as a new feature of the Passover festival, a commemoration of the advent of the Messiah as foretold by the prophets.

How did Easter get its name?

One belief is that Easter got its name from the Goddess of Spring called Eostre who some people worshipped long before Jesus was born. At that time it was thought that the sun died in winter and was born again in spring when days would lengthen and the sun’s power would return. In Europe, Eostre was honoured as the bringer of spring.

When and how long is Easter?

Easter Day is always on a Sunday, but the date varies from year to year unlike Christmas which is always on December 25. Many years ago Christians decided that Easter Day should be always be on the Sunday following the first full moon that occurs on or following the spring equinox (March 2I). This means that Easter can be as early as 22 March or as late as 25 April. For this reason Easter is called a movable feast.
Holy Week, the last week of Lent, begins with the observance of Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday takes its name from Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem where the crowds laid palms at his feet. Holy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper, which was held the evening before the Crucifixion. Friday in Holy Week is the anniversary of the Crufixion, the day that Christ was crucified and died on the cross.Holy week and the Lenten season end with Easter Sunday, the day of resurrection of Jesus Christ.

MMD in Kasama resolve to promote party harmon

he Movement for Multi-Party Democracy, MMD, in Northern province yesterday held a reconciliation meeting with its provincial and district
officials with the aim of promoting harmony in the party.

According to the press statement issued to ZANIS in Kasama by MMD provincial secretary, Jailos Simunyola, described the meeting as successful.

The members who attended the meeting resolved to embark on the campaign to organize and further strengthen the part in the province.

The meeting also supported President Mwanawasa's view that the party hold a national convention one year before the tripartite elections to avoid leadership wrangles
within the party.

The statement added that the party should however continue identifying a suitable candidate who should move in the same direction of President Mwanawasa.

The members ruled out tribal politics as every Zambian had a role to play in the development of the country.

They also  supported reconciliation among party members and civil servants in the province in order to foster development.

Govt says ZANACO offer price was US$8.25 million

Government says the Zambia National Commercial Bank, ZANACO, has been sold at an offer price of US$8.25 million to Rabo Bank of Netherlands.

Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry, Kenneth Konga, has however, stated that the actual sale price of the bank would be known after three months at the completion of the evaluation of assets.

Mr. Konga told Parliament today that in accordance with the sale and purchase agreement between government and Rabo bank, 10 per cent of the offer price was received on January 22nd this year while the remainder was received on April 3rd .

He said in a ministerial statement delivered in parliament today that the money arising from the sale has been deposited in the current corporate account of ZANACO, account number 00304100000047.

He disclosed that Rabo Bank’s gross bid on net assets of the bank as at 31st December 2004, was at US$10 million, adding that government would within 90 days appoint an independent consultant to evaluate the net asset value of the bank.

ZANACO’s net assets as at December 31st 2004 stood at US$20.5 million.

The ZANACO’s 49 per cent shares have been sold to Rabo Financial Institutions Development, RFID, a subsidiary of Rabobank.

RFID on Tuesday this week, in accordance with the sale and purchase agreement between the Zambian government and the bank, took over the management and operations of ZANACO after the completion of the sale.

Mr. Konga disclosed that so far US$665, 000 have been paid to Price Water House consultants and DLA Paper Royd for consultancy work.

The minister, further, disclosed that Rabo bank has committed itself to increase the number of rural ZANACO branches by 20 per cent and maintain them for a period of not less 10 years.

He, however, said Rabo bank has been allowed to move the existing rural branches within the radius of five kilometres, if necessary.

He assured Zambians that Rabo bank has also agreed to retain all workers but stated that any retrenchment for unionised workers would be done in accordance with the collective agreement on labour laws.

Mr. Konga revealed that the bank has also brought only three expetriates workers that include the Managing Director, Managers for Change and Risk respectively.

He said government was satisfied that the Nertherlands’ bank would reposition ZANACO as an agricultural financial provider and contribute to the wealth creation of Zambia.

The minister said Rabobank’s acquisation of 49 per cent and the impending government’s offloading of 25. 8 percent shares on the Lusaka Stock Exchange, LuSe, marks a milestone in the privitisation programme under the Zambia Development Agency, ZDA.

He further assured the house that government expects the long term partnership with the bank to yield susstainable benefits for the country.

He said all the information on the sale of the bank would in 24 hours be availed on the www.zpa.org.zm website.

Demographic health suvey campaigns kick off in Mufulira

ambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Mufulira district on the Coperbelt Province has kicked off campaign awareness on the Zambia
Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) for 2007.

The long awaited campaigns will take place in the selected wards of the three constituencies of Kantanshi, Kankoyo and Mufulira.

Mufulira District Health Information Officer, Damaris Lungu said the district is ready to start the campaigns following the release of funds by the Central
Statistical Office.

The campaign awareness which commenced  today will aim at providing information to the general public on the importance of people's participation in the survey.

ZDHS is a nation wide exercise that will be conducted between April and September this year.

It will help government to identify existing health problems in communities and also assist in planning for better social services provisions.

It will involve collection of blood samples in the selected households in order to test for HIV/AIDS and syphilis.
