Street Kids flock to Solwezi

Share

Solwezi District Commissioner, Albert Chifita has welcomed the call by the District Child Welfare Committee to construct a centre for street children.

Mr. Chifita said the move is a welcome development.

He was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Solwezi over the weekend. The Committee would mobilize resources through his office for use in constructing the centre where street children will be given training in survival skills to enable them become useful future citizens.

He said the fight against streetism should not be left in the hands of the few and government alone and called on the private sector to also compliment government’s effort.

Mr. Chifita said so many children have come to Solwezi from other parts of the province thinking that is where people have something to offer them due to the mining activities.

“If we don’t sit down to plan on how to arrest this situation in our town, then we are setting a time bomb. Crime will increase and all of us will be affected.” He noted.

Mr. Chifita appealed to parents to take full responsibility of their children and not to neglect them leaving the streets to take care of their children.

He said government is not amused by parents and guardians who neglect their children even when they have the means to support them, adding that parents should acquire survival skills to support their children

Mr. Chifita said it was sad to note that most people in the district have ignored other economic activities such as agriculture and only think of getting jobs in the mines.

“People must work hard on the land to produce more food, exploit the resource and engage in activities such as beekeeping so as to raise income for their families.” He said.

Mr. Chifita appealed to former street children who have been reintegrated  back into the communities to take school work seriously as it is a life time investment.

He advised parents to support the Committee’s initiative of making these children better citizens who can positively contribute to the development of their communities and the country as a whole and urged the media to strongly bring out the problem of streetism.

“You are the mirror of the society, highlight such issues so that people can realize how real and serious the problem is as this needs collective responsibility.” Mr Chifita said.

He assured Committee that the Government will render its support and urged them to work with serious commitment.

“Be transparent and accountable for all the finances in your committee because when people see this they will come in to assist you. I can see hope and development coming in terms of arresting streetism in the District.” Mr Chifta said.

  1. Its because of the mines.I think life is easy for them there because you chased most of them in Lusaka and the copperbelt.

  2. Are they being honest that these kids are coming from other provinces?
No! these kids are from Solowezi itself. Mwilatubepa!! [-x

  3. “He said government is not amused by parents and guardians who neglect their children even when they have the means to support them, adding that parents should acquire survival skills to support their children”.

Mr Chifita I don`t think that`s true. I do not think a parent would just want to neglect his child like that. Ala mwakufilosha tabakwata.

  4. 9 Ba Moze. You’re right. The kids are from within Solwezi. What are they trying to prove by saying they’re from other parts of the province?

  5. Get a chi biiiiggg FARM and put those souls to something productive, while they go to school!
Turn those kids into farmers and wamene sa funa shud go ‘home’
For once those boys and girls could be of some use.

This is a suggestion that could be explored and no one shud shout … ‘child labour!’ because, they would be doing it for themselves

  6. #12 I agree with you. Ifya child labour efiletumpika abaiche to an extent that they don’t want to do their chores.

  7. Most of these children have parents, its poverty bane.
Ofcourse they will turn to usefull citizens, we will have more Kaponyas and Prostitutes in the future.

  9. ooh my God. everything is headed towards North Western Province, stree kids, bembas, ba natola fye, HIV/AIDS, prostitutes, etc! yaba. tu sa kuba ka!!

  10. “The Committee would mobilize resources through his office for use in constructing the centre where street children will be given training in survival skills to enable them become useful future citizens.”

THERE IS NO BETTER TEACHER THAN THE STREETS WHEN TO SURVIVAL SKILLS !!!!! 😕

  11. #20 Do you have problems with Bembas? If a bemba man abandoned you its because so ugly with ugly legs and not that BEMBAS are bad people :d

  12. The only way to deal with street kids is to educate the citizens not to have children carelessly i mean even the blind people you would find someone is asking for help with four children without spacing you would wonder were they get the chidren from, because the father of those children is supposed to provide for them and some street kids are just sent by their parents to beg on the streets.

  13. THIS IS A TIME BOMB. LET THIS BOYS AND GIRLS POUNCE ON GUNS AND AMMUNITION. YOU, WELL-TO-DO CHAPS WILL NEVER SLEEP IN COMFORTABLE HOMES. AND ALL OF YOU, WHO DRIVE POSCH CARS WILL BE VICTIMS OF GUN-POINT ROBBERIES. YOU ARE WORNED.

  14. Can one give a good definition of a street kid?
I was shocked when I visited Chiwoko ZNS Camp said to have been a training centre for street kids. Alas! I found it a karate centre for street adults because none of the trainees qualified to be a kid.Infact some of them had wives and children and were just big bullies.
Every day at least the police post had clients from the same. What a training offered!

  15. savival tacts baazed, the truth of the matter is that these same kids the government is complaing of flocking the streets is because there share is been shared by the law maker of the day and the kids parents have nothing else left to support the family hence they break and all resorts to there own measures of doing things…the government is falling to contain street kids you thnk they will be able to fix zambian economy, no off course…GOD HELP THESE BOYS AND GIRLS TO REALISE THERE TRUE PURPOSE IN LIFE….

  16. the street kid problem needs to be adressed.these are potential robbers, rapists and murderers but they can become potential engineers, economists e.t.c if we citizens and goverment join hands in mitigating the problem. :):):)

  17. Whilst I agree with #12, I wonder how did they go there in the first place? :-?:-?:-?
Secondly you can’t leave these kids without country: they are potential criminals and above, material for Al Qaeda related activities8-x8-x8-x. After all, they can be harnessed to litsen to and follow the teachings of anybody who will give them a shelter, food and a feeling of humanity and being accepted/wanted [-o<[-o<

  18. Ya the kids also need a share of the money the province is swimming in,afterall only in a place where the economy is a little bit better can one find the street kids,Imagine the same situation in nabwalya or shangombo who is there to have enough to give out to others,so well done kids.So it is tandizo mood in solwezi :d

  19. # 8 & 10 , MULIBAFILOTO …THOSE STREET KIDS AND PROSTITUTES ARE FROM THE COPPERBELT ,LUSAKA AND LIVINGSTONE……WE NEVER HAD THAT ISSUE IN SOLWEZI b4. [-(

  20. most of these street kids are orphans and a direct product of HIV AIDS pandemic…..

some of them it is not their wish/will that they are found in a such predicament…..
please pray fo them… and help them in which ever way you can :o>:/>:/[-o<[-o<^:)^^:)^**==

  21. child welfare committee sounds okey and good move but wen shall we see this center being put up and does this mean the number of street kids in zambia will reduce. :((:d/:x
