Shangómbo is one of the most popular districts in Western Province and the country as a whole, although this popularity is synonymous with under-development due to its remote geographical location.

Despite enjoying district status, Shangombo lacks basic social services such as health among others.

With this in mind, the Provincial Health Office in Western Province recently saw it prudent to offer mobile health services to the people of Shangombo.

As expected, the mobile health services attracted a large number of residents with over 1000 patients receiving treatment for different ailments, while 67 patients were operated on.

Lead surgeon, Dr Kazuma Seke, took time to explain the benefit of the mobile hospital to Shangombo residents who were very appreciative of the health services.

Doctor Seke said certain diseases, like fibroids which he operated on, have accounted for the largest number of operations and has bemoaned the high prevalence rate of the illness.

Due to the overwhelming demand for medical services in Shangombo, Dr Seke assured the residents that the Ministry of Health plans make continuous visits to the remote district to provide health services.

  1. Blue cross or Red cross? The mobile hospitals are still using the MMD colors?? God forbid. PF please ensure that the mobile hospitals are painted in national colors.

  2. How is the post treatment care handled. Just in case a patient develops some complication after the hospital has decamped? More money in the pockets of Dr. Seke. Daily subsistence allowance at the rate of kaya… Elo ku mushi ni minimum expenditure. Build a district hospital in Shangombo.

    • There is already a District Hospital being built at Shangombo Boma. It is nearing completion soon. It should be operational in a few month’s time, certainly before the end of the year.

  3. Disease burden is so much. Mmmmm, and continuous visits are justified. This is actually more money in the pocket. I would like to see the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS) supported mwe. The doctors, on request, would be flown to an area where there is disease. They had satellite clinics in remote areas with airstrips. Critical cases were evacuated to Ndola Central Hospital.

  4. If I am not mistaken ZCCM had a similar arrangement. That department must have transformed into a private Medical Air Rescue Services (MARS), accessible to the elite of Zambia who can pay to be “air ambulanced” for two hours into Johannesburg’s Morningside clinic.

  5. I see a pregnant woman and other mothers seated who do not have to walk extremely long distances to get medication. The medication comes to them. And with medicine along comes qualified medical staff, who would have ordinarily objected to living in this area on permanent basis, but are now made available to these people. And I say GOOD JOB and God bless. This is a good idea for some parts of rural Zambia. It’s a step forward.

  6. At least the people are getting some benefits despite the dubious procedure the mobile hospitals were procured.
Red Cross is exclussively for the Red Cross Society. Blue Cross is used by Hospitals/Clinics. National colors are welcome but I think we have better things to dwel on than erasing every perceived MMD image in the country.

  7. Please can someone tell me do these hospitals have a theatre room aim just wondering how that dr managed to operate on a woman with fibroids that a major theatre case or is it just a reporting error

    • Yes indeed! The Mobile Hospital is equipped with an operation theatre, and basically any operation can be performed. Beside the operation theatre, the hospital also has a fully functional medical laboratory, X-ray dept, dental department for tooth ailments, eye dept (they even do eye operations), and offer ultrasound facilities. This is in addition to the general out-patient care, and not to forget the pharmacy dept. So you see, it’s basically a full hospital on wheels!

So the woman reported above was real, and not a reporting error as supposed by Octopus paul Bwalya.

  8. One hospital comprises 7 trucks, with theater and all. There is the cost of fuel, servicing and DSA. As long as it is a hospital, it will help people. But its operation is not economical. Perhaps our govt is tied to this project because of wanting to please China. May be even the operational funds are from China, on loan. Please look at sustainable projects. Those trucks shall pack one day and become scrap.

  9. And then a foo.l just spoils everything and says “well done RB”. These hospitals arrived in the country over 10 months ago, does it mean it take 10 months to reach Shangombo? Does it mean these people will always be waiting for these things to travel in order to get treatment. PF please hospitals in these areas. These hospitals came in as a result of corruption and that is how they will die. Sometimes I understand why God created hell so that people like RB who seem to get away with poor people’s money can go there.

    • …….does it mean it takes 10 months to reach Shangombo? Actually, this was the second time the Mobile Hospital reached Shangombo. The first time was in September last year, a few weeks before the tripartite elections. In any case, each province has 1 mobile hospital. The hospital takes turns to visit the various districts month after month. So, the time the hospital was not in Shangombo, it was visiting other districts in Western Province.

  10. Its not Shang’ombo but Shangombo, just as it is not the country Ang’ola but Angola. Why do you want to bastardize names to suit your tongue-tiedness. For heaven’s sake Mukelebai is not the same as Mukelabai.
That contingent is nothing but a money-spinning undertaking whose skewed staff selection has failed to meet the professional challenge in Shangombo.
    Its all Faecal matter!

  11. The president is busy upgrading bomas to districts from State House merely by pointing at a place from a map of Zambia atlas….upgrade to district status then immediately provide services with military precision and urgency. Why can’t they park the mobile clinic truck there in Shamgambo till services are available on the ground.
By the way ba ZANIS does one have to refer to Google to find the definition of fibroids…too many journalists who lack passion for the job out there.
