HH condemns Catholic Priest deportation

Hakainde Hichilema

United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has charged that the rights and liberty of Zambians are threatened under the PF Government, as any opposing voice will be suffocated and criminalized.

Mr Hichilema said that the recent deportation of Lundazi based Catholic Priest Fr Viateur Banyangandora by the government is a serious assault on Zambia’s democracy.

Mr Hichilema in a statement released to the media the deportation is a further signal to all that the one party “pick up and lock up” syndrome and detention in secret locations is back

The UPND leader added that this is a clear attempt by President Michael Sata’s government to silence all voices that speak the truth or have a different view or position from that of the government.

He questioned what explanation is there for the deportation of a Priest for passionately speaking about the plight of the poor.

Mr Hichilema further questioned the justification for the bundling Fr Banyangandora and whisking him away from Lundazi as though he was a criminal and subsequently deporting him to Rwanda.

He said that the UPND finds it unacceptable that a priest in a Christian nation can be deported for merely preaching a message addressing the plight of the poor.

He wonders whether the mention of the low cotton price is a danger to the peace and order of the country.

  1. U COULD DO THE SAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!U ARE ONE AND THE SAME PEOPLE….ALASS ALASS WE DONT KNOW WAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR US…

  2. HHyou are my next president, why me vote this foolish G7,old man no thinking.pumbafu nyama, makaka. You start playing with man of God,it mean you are playing with God.

    • Ba M……
Do you mean that a non-Zambian can be deported just like that? Please stay within your village where you are. Your comment does not even carry any meaning except insult. Close your doors and stay in your room. Dont come out.

  3. Really, on this one I for once agree with HH. The goverment needs to give a thorough and plausible reason for deporting a person who was merely speaking for the poor.
So much for freedom of expression

    • I agree with you. Someone need to explain this deportation – was the priest linked to some occurrences in Rwanda? Is he on the wanted list of some sort? Could he be linked to the support of the M23 rebels in DRC? So many questions. Surely the PF cannot deport someone just for criticizing their policies – if that is TRUE, I will really be scared!!! – It would be a terrible signal that we are headed into trouble.

  4. HH, just shut up, what can you offer, nothing. there is more to his deportation, do not just
make noise. you have one province only to rule.

  5. Zambia is a sivereign state and political maters are a preserve of Zambians and not non nationals. Thus those that are not Zambians have an obligation to keep their political opnions to them selves lest they import genocide here as they did back home. As Zambians while we embrace non nationals lets not abdicate our rights to them. Out of this coyntry you donot comment on other countries politics. In view of this, the deportation was in order.

    • Contradictions!!!!!!!! When foreign priests were campaigning for PF, PF cadres did not stop them or tell them they could not speak for PF because they were foreigners. Please be consistent! This flip-flopping must come to end!!!!

  6. under rb ukwa was very much hepled by the catholic priests to critisise the govenment of that time, now that it is his time he ahs started depoting them.just how heart hardedly is CNP

  7. Hakainde E.T(economic terrorist)’s big head has absolutely no sanity, he is just a shameless opportunist without an direction. What has ET knows about state security? We know he plan are to incite people raise against the legitimate elected government, we know his schemes.

  8. Imwe ba Nyandule from Bantustan. Our people have killed a chinese man and you are attacking the President for protecting you against hate speech. What is wrong with us kanshi. No wonder late Mwanawasa told us that we are buttocks and we will never go infront.

  9. Is he trying to spy on his girlfriend at the catholic office how many women does this man have I must warn my sisters it seems he is a danger to women

  10. Man HH you have taken too long to confirm that foreigners are being violated by the Patriotic Zambians. I don’t like people who like to say “chalo chesu.. don’t say a sh&%t”.

  11. I live in the UK, where arguably democracy is more advanced but the british do not waste time to deport anyone preaching anarchy, unrest or public disorder. And that is irregardless of whether they have adopted british citezenery or not. HH you should learn when to condemn and when to keep your mouth shut. Its only in Zambia where foreigners are encouraged to take an upper hand over indiginous people and HH is quite happy with that and wants to be the president too. Freedom of speech has to be taken with a pinch of salt and shouldnt undermine the security and integrity of the country.

    • Amayama, we don’t look up to the UK on everything, including those things they arguably do wrong. It was very wrong for Sata to deport someone for defending the poor. This is the same prient who was Pro PF in last run up to elections.

    • Amanyama, only an illiterate would equate a statement that bemoans the low prices of cotton affecting affecting the poor as preaching anarchy. This issue of deporting the priest on such a charge should make any Zambian pause and think about where we are heading to as a nation under such a leadership.

    • Let’s be honest, the UK Border Agency would only do that if you don’t have papers or have overstayed…if you have paper work they will refer the matter to a court.

    • And in UK you will have protection of LAW. Have heard of something referred as HUMAN RIGHTS? What *****ical comparison……………

  12. I enjoy people like Hamiyanze who just yap in order to maintain their salaries. You should know that whatever we do today determines our future so dont just yap in order to fill you belly.

  13. My next vote goes to HH, i regret voting for these *****s, they seem not to know what they are doing, only a fool can continue supporting the PF blindly, forget about my vote, you fools….

  14. PF is a military party with CNP a dictator. Cleaver people like Guy is not appreciated by SATA because he consider them as a threat.

  15. It took him four days after the event in to comment meaning that he saw nothing wrong with the deportation initially. He is only now commenting after public outcry because he has realised that this issue has raised enough public outcry for him to ride on. Observe him on many issues. If there is no public outcry he is quiet but if the public cry thats why he jumps on the bandwagon. he behaved the same with the 100% salary increment amongst other issues. HH has no integrity and he is an opportunist. We will be no better under this man than we are under PF.

    • Lady, leaders do just say without reasoning, leaders need to cool down and comment only when they have enough facts. You are very dull.

    • He did not yap anyhow unlike your Ukwa who responds to any rumour whether confirmed or not. What happened with the so called gold scam, the mpundu trust, the purchase of presidential cars?

  16. Every right thinking Zambian should condemn this even if they are PF. its utter cowardice on the part of Government. they are behaving worse than MMD. Same on the catholic President.

  17. @Amayama. You couldn’t have put it any better! Anyone advocating anarchy should be deported, if they are foreigners, or jailed if they are Zambians. You can not use freedom of speech as an excuse to incite people to rise against a legitimate government. Am sure HH would do the same if he was President. Those of you who are old enough will remember what MMD did to Rev. Turner.

    • Which UK did you live in kanshi imwe mwe fipuba? If you commented on unemployment and how people have lost jobs you can never be deported. You just hate HH. Please learn to think beyond your tribe. Stop being petty kwati nindoshi and focus on the real issues.

  18. Your comment has come at the right time, Chiluba once warned us of Sata about deportation.Without Chiluba, many well meaning foreigners would have been depotated by Sata. Its time we changed! HH is very right!

  19. @14 Amayama – in Britain they follow the rule of law – they do not take “suspects” to unknown locations…etc. We all know that terror suspects are taken to Paddington Green – and are allowed legal representation as is their human right. And you well know that the process to deport is exhaustive. No need to defend the indefensible.

  20. HH I believe you would go even further than that. Deport any non tonga speaking priests, especially the people from Northen and Luapula that you ignorantly claim to be all bembas. Inciting our citizenry to rise against the government tantamounts to treason in most countries regardless of who is doing it. In this case, the PF should tell what the man of God did for them to go to this extreme. But HH should not smear us with rubbish all the time because he always tries to ride on the backs of public outcry. I condemn the deportation as a Zambia but I am not going to be hoodwinked by the biggest tribalist in the name of “hakaivotela.”

  21. HH always speak sense. only jelousy makes some of us disagree with him. PF made a big fool of themselves by deporting a christian presist.. are we no longer a christian nation.? i miss RB, CHILUBA….these were true democratics..UKWA is a an autocrat.

  22. Bishop mpundu can’t comment because he is a beneficiary of thnis regime. The Catholic church in zambia needs a new bishop. The one they have is not speaking against injustice and is having affairs – allegedly…

    • Archbishop Mpundu cannot speak for this priest for the Priest belongs to a different diocese. His bishop has spoken already.

  23. We may not have the details baout this priest and the surmon about low cotton prices may be the only information in the public domain.
I will resist to comment and the State sometimes acts and is not obliged to divulge details due to national security, I dont want to speculate but suffice to say, one needs details about this deportation before we condemn the State!!!

  24. Most comments condeming Gov. have no knowledge of what happend the priest was being followed for his careless talks and inciting people and if you follow rwanda genocide its the priest that spearheaed the same and informatin has it that the same priest is actually wanted in rwanda for his participation hence his deporation capuled with careless talks. carefull before u say what u dont know.

  25. iwe naiwe ka cindy uli kalisaka.why should Bishop Mpundu comment when he is not ZEC president.muleikalafye mayo

  26. What!!! You HH are growing dull Ka??? Is it you I knewsome time back?? I doubt man. Where on earth has a foreigner participated in the politics of a host country? And you HH is saying yes to this nonsense…..but sure HH is becoming a child.

  27. Where is Nawakwi and Chipimo? Are they not aware of these national matters? I haven’t heard them comment on the minimum wage, low cotton prices, 100% salary increase of the president and cabinet ministers, deportation of a priest for preaching about poverty, killing of the chinese etc. It would be good to know their position instead of keeping silent. Have they joined PF? I’m also anxiously waiting to hear the comment of Father Telescope Mpundu on the deported college. On this one, he should not keep quiet like he has on chieftainess Nkomeshya issue. Silence means consent.

  28. Most comments here reflect how i used to feel since 1996; especially after I lost a loved one from a preventable desease. I have been left with a huge task to look after ophans; and i hated MMD to the core. After their removal from power, am glad to say i feel inner peace. For as long as the decisions made by a government can make the voters happy; i mean the 54% Kaponyas, then peace be with you all. Security issues are security issues. As a mukwere kwere, I always watch what i say and where I say it. I keep my strong opinions to myself. Kolwestans say: “Mwikala patalala mwine ashita fridge”.

  29. So you people are happy that the father has gone back o his home country. What is really in ur minds when you here about the deportation of this father let as learn when to condemn and when to praise HH is very right on this one.

  30. Ka HH please sit yourself down. This chap should stand as a MP for Livingstone or Choma to gain some experience under his belt then we will listen to him in 2024.

  31. NOW pf summon HH again!!! backdated the call out to 8 july. kekekekeee cnp zoona. Meanwhile HH is slowly gaining some serious following…

  32. Hakainde ET has condemned the evacuation
archbishop to SA for specialist siting that it is a waste of government resources. That’s Hakainde for you.

  33. Amayama@ …15, you couldn’t be more wrong. Its not easy to deport people from the UK – even those who have for years been considered a terrorist threat. You should differentiate between freedom of speech and actual inciting or carrying out activities in preparation for anarchy or terrorist attacks. A lot of ‘Mullahs’ in the UK condemn a whole range of political and social matters to do with the govt. – and they do this week in and week at in the mosques and parks. Most are still free to roam. Even the few arrested are accorded legal representation and many do not end in deportation. Now what about a priest who speaks for the poor? What security issues are involved? Stretching such matters is what evently leads to unprecedented erosion of peoples rights to speak against injustice.

  34. PF cadres have a short memory what about the foreign Catholic priests who campaigned for them and washed down RB, how come they did not advice RB to deport them. Stop over blowing this issue, the genocide has nothing to do with this priest. Should we all believe that all Rwandese catholic priests are guilty. Just accept when you have made a mistake and find measures to correct your bad decisions. 2016 is also too far so that we can have a real government in place. HH analyses issues before making statements and that is what any sensible President should do than just opening his mouth anyhow and then he will be forced to backtrack on what he says, so to those that want HH to comment ASAP on any issue, just check the mistakes of your government as an example Minimum Wage TBC

  35. lady what about the plight of evelyn hone student he commented immediately .your party pf is going down the students now have no confidence in your kaponya party. VIVA HH COME 2016 YOU ARE IN OFFICE ABASH INDOSHI SATA SO MANY ACCIDENTS IN THE COUNTRY.

  36. So HH go to Rwanda and learn about making inflammatory statements, visit the killing fields, get an education. You need one

  37. the past two days ve comfirmed the fears ve had about hakaivotela heka, anda 5, boko haram terrorist commander, chimbwi no strategy(cns) now with a new name added.. economic terrorist ET. HAS THIS MAN (HH) BEING TO SCHOOL? WE ARE TOLD HE HAS A DEGREE, I DOUBT? THE MAN CLEARLY HAS NO STRATEGY OF HOW TO WIN ELECTIONS APART FROM COPYING WHAT SATA WAS DOING. SATA HAD A STRATEGY AND NATIONAL APPEAL, HH DOESNT HAVE.

  38. WHY NOT INCREASE THE SALARY, THIS IS THE ONLY INVESTMENT SATA HAS OTHERWISE HE RISKS DYING WITH ONLY 7 GUNS. THIS IS WHY I HAVE BEGIN LOVING HH, THE MAN IS A HARD WORKER & VERY CORPORATE. JUST IMAGINE IF HH IS ALLOWED TO LEAD ZAMBIA & HIS PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES WERE TO BE PUMPED INTO THE ZAMBIAN ECONOMY, ZAMBIA WILL MOVE FAR MUCH STEPS AHEAD. IT IS SAD IN ZAMBIA WE HAVE UNLEARNED SELFISH LEARDERS.

  39. no one is above the law either prist, bishop, elder etc.mind wat u say.u may think u are saving God but not.why talk about cotton in church?

  40. #31, mpinganjira Zeb:
Your words are full of wisdom and substance. If only all bloggers could show such analysis and depth of thought! Alas, most of them sound like empty tins blown along by the wind. They just rush to comment on issues without having any real facts on the matter. What a waste!

  41. imwe ba kolwe……do u know how many rwandese catholic priests are in jail bcoz of genocide cases? was it not a rwandese priest who gave out his pipo to the rebels in congo Dr a year ago? do not protect wht u do not andastand.

  42. HH just speaks the same words everytime, change the strategy iwe Tonga boy. Though u are better than my tribesmate nevers, and chipimo i still cant’ vote for atonga in office, i can imagine what can happen to our women ..shit

  43. Even when HH speaks sense, the PF thugs see the negative side of issues. Shame on you Pathetic Fulish (PF) bloggers.

  44. When Jesus was here on earth, how many sermons did he give to the poor and oppressed? Out of all the sermons he gave, how many were political in nature? How many talked about about how the Roman rule did not meet the needs of the Jewish people? After we have answered this, then let us ask ourselves what is the role of the church in the world? Is it a social club of activists or it is a haven of peace teaching forgiveness and patience. The priest was against the MMD and now he is against PF. To me he is just a hard person and looking for trouble. I do not have the facts about his life in Lundazi, but there is more to this than what meets the eye. At face value it looks bad. But what would warrant a ‘watch-for” on this particular priest?

  45. One of the reason RB lost the elections is because he did not listen to the security agents. This Priest could have been already flagged under RB as a trouble maker. This time Sata listened and gave a green light. Let us learn to trust our security system and stop politiking on everything. Zambia is safer without preachers of doom. What was the preacher doing talking about cotton prices when he was supposed to lift up Jesus? Catholics awe mwandi!

  46. Now i’m browsing both for blogs supply neutral, balanced commentary in most matters or possibly blogs that are fitted with a fabulous liberal or possibly left-wing inclination. Thanks a ton..

  47. “HH” ale kula na amano!! Nomba iwe, hold Convention!! Usoke tu nchembele tobe uto twasama ati “only a Tonga to lead!” Ta ule mona ati PF yala asama taila kwanisha 12mths in govt??
