GOVERNMENT has warned opposition political parties in Livingstone to desist from frustrating its efforts of clearing street vending from the streets aimed at maintaining sanity in the city ahead of next year’s United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) general assembly.

Tourism and Arts Minister Sylvia Masebo urged the opposition not to use street vendors for their selfish gains, as the Government was determined to maintain cleanliness in the city ahead of the UN tourism global summit.

Ms Masebo said some opposition leaders were telling street vendors to remain in the streets to insinuate that the Government had failed to control the situation yet the Livingstone City Council had provided an alternative land outside the town centre where vendors could be trading from.

She was speaking in Livingstone after she toured the town centre component of Mosi-oa-tunya road which was overcrowded by over 200 street vendors.

She said it was important that Livingstone was kept clean and the corridors were kept clear for tourists and other visitors to freely move around as opposed to the current situation where vendors overcrowded the streets.

[pullquote]We know that opposition leaders are telling vendors that they should not move out of the streets so that Government should be seen to be failing to control the situation. Don’t use vendors for your selfish gains,” Ms Masebo said.[/pullquote]

She said Livingstone was not just an ordinary town but a tourist capital of Zambia hence it was important that the city maintained its status.

“Clearly there is a problem here in Livingstone because the number of street vendors in the town centre is increasing every day. The environment is not conducive and we need to do something urgently to control the situation.

We know that opposition leaders are telling vendors that they should not move out of the streets so that Government should be seen to be failing to control the situation. Don’t use vendors for your selfish gains,” Ms Masebo said.

She said if street vendors in Livingstone did not move out of the streets to an alternative land the Council provided to them, the situation could get out hand especially as the rain season was approaching.

“For those who want to bring politics in matters of street vending, we will deal with them because we are better politicians than them.

“We know how to play politics and how to use the system to ensure that those who want to play politics are dealt with accordingly by the law,” she said.

She urged vendors to listen to the Government which played the role of ensuring that there was order and the environment was conducive to tourists, residents, vendors and other stakeholders.

She noted that even some foreigners from Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Tanzania and other countries were also selling various merchandise in Livingstone which was unfortunate.

She was determined to ensure that Livingstone was clean ahead of the UNWTO general assembly.

Ms Masebo urged vendors and other relevant authorities in Livingstone to ensure toilets and amenities were built at an alternative piece of land so that vendors could move to the new place soon.

Speaking at the same function, United Street Vendors Foundation (USVF) Southern Region Secretary Patrick Mubanga said the vendors would work with the Government to bring sanity in Livingstone.

Mr Mubanga said it was unfortunate that some opposition leaders were trying to politicise street vending, as vendors were ready to move out of the town centre and start trading at the new site.

“We will develop the new trading area and invite the Council to help us allocate stands to vendors so that the process is transparent. We want to graduate from street vendors to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMES,” he said.

    • Yea, this was my understanding as well.   Why was prof Luo DEMOTED!  Why was the corporal, or is it colonel in Lusaka stopped from getting rid of vendors – was it the opposition there as well?  Was it the opposition who said leave the vendors alone – they voted for us and have no other jobs?

    • @ #1,
Yes you are right, PF are in support of street vending, remember Pro Luo wanted them removed but the president was furious about it and differed with her. It’s therefore foolish for this Masebo to blame the opposition, it’s all about appeasing her boss.

    • Masebo IS IN FACT referring to SATA as her opposition in view of Prof Luo ‘s demotion and Colonel Gerry ….It’s good she’s spot on-street vending is bad for our streets as opposed to what Sata thot..

    • She just forgot that she is now part of the PF machinery. Otherwise blaming the opposition for everything is part of the PF strategy and she forgot that her boss had already put a political spin on this one.

  1. Hypocrisy of the highest order, Ba Masebo. Street vending was legalised by Ukwa in Lusaka and other major towns…Livingstone inclusive. This has nothing to do with the opposition. Nkandu Luo is still at loss on this point and you have the guts to claim that it is an opposition making!

  2. Is Sylvia Masebo having an orgasm in the office or what? Because if she is, that is the only way she can confuse the opposition with retard Sata’s directives on street vendors. I wonder who is on top of her! If she wants respect, she must earn it by using her brains not her bottoms when she speaks. We are tired…

    • Am not a PF sympathiser but I think your writing is in bad taste. Insult a woman it means you have insulted your mother as well. My brother just stick to facts, not insele.

    • Boss, they must first fill up the existing markets before building new ones. That is the starting point. The Markets are empty as of now.

  3. BUILDING A PROPER MARKET FOR STREET VENDORS SHOULD PART OF THE UNWTO PLAN AND PERMANENT EVACUATION OF STREET VENDORS JUST AS BUILDING PUBLIC TOILETS (if at all you have started constructing this public utility). ONCE MARKET IS BUILT LAW CAN BE PASSED AGAINST ILLEGAL STREET VENDING. TAMUKWETE AMANO?

  4. Sylvia is insane if she is correctly quoted. PF are the ones in the forefront supporting street vending. Moreover, most street vendors are hardcore PF supporters regardless of which region they hail from and operating in.

  5. Wynter Kabimba and Malupenga confused Sylvia Masebo by engaging her to numerous Blow Jobs. Sylvia has stopped thinking straight. Sylvia lost elections in Chongwe to Japhet Mwakalombe.
Now she has become a praise singer for Ukwa. She should blame Sata who has encouraged the Street vendors to stay put on the streets.

Nkandu Luo nearly lost her JOB for trying to remove them.

Remember at one time the Lusaka City Council gave the Govt an ultimatum to vacate the streets and Ukwa dressed them down for trying to chase vendors out???

  6. On August 1 whilst in Livingstone, the same Sylvia said and I quote
” Tourism and Arts Minister Sylvia Masebo says President Michael Sata has continued to protect street vendors because they gave him a mandate alongside other Zambians to
    lead the country”

    End of quote.

Bloggers Judge who is telling lies.

  7. This is what Forrie Tembo a D/Minister in the PF Govt said on street Vending

I Quote ” Government’s ban of street vending will only be effected once alternative places are found for the vendors. Local government deputy minister, Forrie Tembo said that the vendors for now will continue trading on the streets.”

    End of quote.

I think PF must relinquish the right to lead. They do NOT seem to know what to do and are fast to accuse the opposition.

  8. I never understand why some people can’t just discuss an issue without insulting even on Sunday when most Zambians are in a prayerful mood. Its disgusting. Some may not like Maseba for their own reasons i would’nt even want to know but ,they ought to remember that she’s a national leader and as such must be respected even as we differ with her. In civilised societies people dont insult their leaders because that would demean the nation. Imagin other countries reading such insults on our leaders, what impression are we creating about ourselves.

    • My friend, its only leaders like Masebo who can be insulted on a Sunday because of her pathetic conduct. Are you tlling us that Masebo does not know who gave the vendors to continue trading on the Streets. And you expect us to accept that rubbish just because she is a leader. I do not know which country you are refering to where they accept dull leaders. In South Africa Zuma was drawn with his genitals showing, Bill Clinton was torn to pieces when he had an affair with a White House Maid, A leader can only earn respect if they conduct themselves not by sleeping around openly.

  9. Oooooooh dear….Masebo IS IN FACT referring to SATA as her opposition in view of Prof Luo ‘s demotion and Colonel Gerry ….It’s good she’s spot on-street vending is bad for our streets as opposed to what Sata thot..

  10. In PaFyamba govt they distribute chamba for free.So dont blame Silivia malupe kabimba.Plus dementia due to wasting brain cells due to hiv,awe sure!Disaster.Ukwa legalised vending not hh or nevers

  11. # 14 Leaders ought to be dignified with truth to what they say to the led. Respect is earned by being open to truthful beliefs and convictions. None seem to be pausable with the current leadership in PF govt. Masebo created a political mockery of democracy in Zambia in Chongwe constituency by default to create room for her greed of power rendering Mwakalombwe to defect to PF when she could not excel to MP position. Who, in this enlightened world would respect her? To treat citizens like tools for self benefit is an abomination before God, she and PF wont go far.

  12. #14 Joel above.

These leaders are NOT insulted but told off for being serious Liars even on a Sunday. Those that aspire to lead must be above Board. In other countries they resign when their nocturnal activities are exposed. Not here in Zambia cause we don’t hold them accountable for the wrong things they do.

I support all the quotes from Mputyu above to remind us on past contradictory speeches from the very leaders u want us o give respect and from #4 Owu Mulola Wendi.

Sylvia should NOT pretend to be cleaver by openly wrongly blaming the opposition when the mess was created by Ukwa.

  13. Masebo & PF get rid of the log in your eyes first then speak of opposition. You wanted zambian towns to go to the dogs just to get votes. Now you see the resultant filth of your cheap campaign strategy and you act shocked?Maybe we should ship you to Kroo bay slums in Sierra Leone where there’s cholera or the terrible Ajegunle slums of Lagos then you’ll come back with an appreciation for order and cleanliness.Don’t let our towns sink to the levels of Kroo Bay or Ajegunle.

  14. To bring order where there is disorder, is disordered damn ka small girl Ka Masebo. You went to Livingston most likely to look for a new catch *****. Stop this nonsense of yours iwe we kamwanakashi.

  15. The blame game does not breed development but regression. We all know that the pf regime allowed venders across the country to sell saying that they would be protected. Now this masebo is casting blame on the opposition. This is a clear sign that the pf is purely clueless in sorting out problems for the country.

  16. I think the PF and Sylvia shoul be honest enough when they have blundered. You caanot allow stret vending everywhere else except Livinsrone. Street vending would be part of tourist attractions just use it to your advantage. Bottom line is this, if street vending must be banned let it be across the country. And President Sata must be the one to issue the order! Let him not hide behide his ministers please!

  17. If LT reported this story correctly, then am afraid it Looks like it’s now open season among PF leaders to lie without impunity. The crazier the lie, the more points one seems to score among themselves. Its like they’re running some kind of LLT (Lie League Table). The lack of shame is legendary. Lying is now fast becoming a work of Art and at this rate, it going to be constitutionalised very soon.

  18. The reason why Africa and Zambia included are not making any headway to real developemnt is that we have very dull politicians. These are the same pipo with their president who stopped Nkundu Luo from getting street vendors out of the streets of Lusaka but today they blame it on the opposition. What a leadership?

  19. what is this Sylvia Masebo smoking making her to lose memory like a chicken. is it not her boss kkkbvc ata who vigorously defended street vending in Lusaka? Are they implying that street vendors in Livingstone are been punished for not voting for PF? Is Masebo normal or does she want to make us believe she left Lusaka in the night for her not to have seen the vendors in Lusaka before rushing to Livingstone to make noise? Another U TURN from PF.

  20. chibwabwa, impwa, rape, imbalala, tomato, onion, kapenta, beans, maize, are all sold in streets in Zambia! where is our hygen? This is why cholera ngayaisa nikafwafwa.Lets emulate other countries who vend in the streets but clean their vending areas everyday after business closes.

  21. @26 Mambala  Exactly, good point..if Sata and Co had let Dr. Luo carry on with her removal plan 11 months ago the dust would have settled by now and we would have decent clear streets by now, all politicians are simply thinking of the next by election. Zambians who buy from street vendors should share the blame as well as they are escalating it as long as there are takers street vendor will flourish even if you create jobs that space will be filled. It’s similar to drug dealers when they are arrested and imprisoned a new dealer simply steps up and fills the void.
Its never to late to remove them better now than later…

  22. GREAT LEADERS ARE GRADED BY WHAT THEY TELL THE NATION.ONE WONDERS WHAT THIS GOVERMENT IS UP TO.WHAT OPPOSTION ARE YOU TAKING ABOUT.IN LUSAKA WHERE THEY IS THE CAPITAL CITY AND WHERE YOU MINISTERS COME FROM STREET VENDING IS EVERY WHERE INCLUDING STATE HOUSE THATS IS WHY WE HAVE THE WILLIE NSANDAS OF THIS WORLD.
PEOPLE TOLD YOU BUT YOU CALLED THEM BITTER.NOW SORROW YOUR PRIDE AND FACE CHOLERA.
TO PEOPLE OF LIVINGSTONE CONTINUE VENDING THE STREETS AS THIS IS PFs AGENDA.BRAVO STREET VENDERS IN LIVINGSTONE

  23. Silyvia Masebo needs a strong black hard as a mukwa stick inside her. It seems Malupenga and Winter are weak soldiers. I think Nsanda or Kambili can do the job.Kamasebo Kafunika ikulu yofipa.

  24. This what happens when political prostitutes go to show off their bottoms in jeans and forget to reflect on the real situation.Lets cut the chase, you cannot flip flop on this subject Maseba because UKWA supports street vending. He has been known to frustrate Nkandu Luo’s efforts of getting these people from the streets into the markets were they are meant to be.Are you saying you want to get street vendors off the streets now and let them back once the event is over?

This is like pushing the door which is already open .Get back to UKWA and tell him that his position on vendor is proving a pain on your back side .

  25. My Grandma, my aunties and my mom raised me to respect women and open doors for them. Its really very very very disappointing to read some of the explicit comments on this thread posted by some feeble minded dullard chaps.

  26. masebo is drunk with power has she forgotten that it’s pf protecting street vendors. have been supporting masebo since she joined politics now, on this the woman has just exposed her dullness.

  27. I was brought up to respect women in general, if only they respect themselves, they don’t lie and those that are not prostitutes! Judging by the majority of comments I don’t know where this one fits, but l can guess!

  28. What do you expect from a PF Cabinet Mistress when the man in State House is Zambia’s number one , Kachepa. Lies in the morning. Lies at midday. And lies in the Evening. Liars cannot develop a nation. They can only destroy it. Abash Sata and his clan of liars!

  29. The son of Masebo, one based here in USA, is also commenting. What kind of son is this boy sure, how can you stand your mother being undressed in public like this?

  30. PF govt is full full of minister like masebo with small brains. is it not your sata who stopped the removal vendors? Ask pro luo and general gerry chanda and they will tell. so stop blaming the opposition you people with no plan. ask sata to repeal his directive on street vending and all our streets will be clean. Honestly, who can one make every street a market? even our uneducated forefathers did not do that.

  31. It is ridiculous to blame this on the opposition. Luo tried to bring sanity to the towns by removing the vendors and it earned her a demotion. There should be no street vendors across the country. That way our society will be orderly and healthy. Your laxity has come to bite you in the back!! Ukolola zauna biala.

  32. She is a lier and a prostitute, what good can come out of her, it is just rubbish. Each they fail they blame the opposition and where they find things are already in place and doing fine by MMD, they claim praise and say they have done well, and yet it is not their work it was MMD who left all projects taking place. Masebo has swallowed a lot of sperms from different men so she is now running mad. You can see even the skin of her face looks like she smears sperms on it every morning. Chimo cikapona ngo lukuni.

  33. Is Masebo in the right frame of mind? This is insanity of the worst kind. Who allowed the vending in the first place, isn’t it the PF and Masebo? Now she has the guts to turn around and blame the opposition! What nonsense! You can see the type of leadership this country has. How can the country develop with such type of leaders? Leaders who cannot think and be original? This is an insult to the people of Zambia. How long are we going to allow such mediocrity in our leadership ranks? Masebo has just demonstrated that the PF has no capacity to govern Zambia. These are politics of expediency where leaders are failing to make decisions, instead they want to blame everything on somebody else. You cannot run government like that. There is no seriousness in this government. I cry for Zambia.

  34. Masebo should just go and tell Sata that the decision to let people trade along the streets of our cities is not tenable. Now that she can’t face him for fear of losing her job, she has chosen to tell lies to please Sata. She knows that Sata is feather brained and will believe any stupid thing. Masebo knows the truth but she cannot face it off with Sata. She is a coward and lacks leadership. How can you resort to telling lies when the truth is just before you? How can you deliberately avoid the truth? On this one she has discgraced herself and shown that she is a person with a very small brain and does not deserve to be in leadership. What she has said will haunt her some day because she knows she told lies. What a shame on this woman. She cannot think independently.

  35. First man, ‘Man, you know that Masebo is just a “Post Turtle”.
Second man, “what is a ‘post turtle’?”
First man, ‘When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘post turtle'”.
First man continues to explain. “You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she doesn’t belong up there, she doesn’t know what to do while she’s up there, she’s elevated beyond her ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of a dumb asshole put her up there to begin with.”

  36. PF allowed street vending but am sure Masebo wasn’t present for this meeting as she was a mere civilian after having lost the BY elections until God Sata forced the guy who won and appointed him into the useless missions abroad just to have finished prostitute Masebo back.

  37. Masebo is so gullible. She cant even remember that it was her president, Satana, who encouraged or legalized street vending together with his nephew Kabimba. First remove the street vendors in Lusaka. Masebo clean clean your town, Lusaka, before you start talking ill of vendors in LIvingstone. I know you are referring to Hon. Kaingu, but remember Prof. Nkandu Luo cost her job when she tried to bring sanity in our roads in Lusaka.

  38. Masebo has boobed big time on this one. Not even a single person has come to her aid in terms of the substantive issues she raises or should I say “she attempts to raise”.

  39. The argument advanced by the honourable minister is rather shallow and ridiculous to say the least. firtly it is common knowledge that the PF govt has no intentions of removing the street vendor from the streets alleging that they need to create employment for them before thinking of removing them from the streets. . . it is hypocritic for the hon. min to try and remove the vendor so that she can create a force impression that there is sanity on the streets. . . the hon. min shud be level head and give other accuses and not blaming the opposition unjustily. if it is sanity that the govt want, they should consider coming up with measure of controlling street vending in the stort term, while finding alternative places for them to trade from not blaming the opposition.
