A 54 year old Bishop of Joana Masowe Church in Lusaka’s Marapodi compound has pleaded not guilty to the charge of defiling two girls who were allegedly recruited to train in sisterhood at his church.
Joshua Matongo, a farmer and business man of Chisamba, is alleged to have defiled two girls aged between 13 and 14 year on a daily basis and warned them not to tell anyone.
The alleged defilement forced the girls to flee from his farm in Chisamba.
Particulars of the offence are that on dates unknown but between June 1st and October 31st 2012 while in Chisamba in Central Province had unlawful carnal knowledge of girls under the age of 16.
Matongo denied the charge when he appeared before Lusaka magistrate Betty Malupenga for plea yesterday.
He is charged with two offences of child defilement contrary to section 138 (1) cap 87 of laws of Zambia.
However, Matongo applied for a bail stating that he has seven children to take care of.
Matongo told court that he was ready to abide by any conditions the court may put across adding that he was of fixed abode and is willing to produce sureties.
Magistrate Malupenga granted Matongo a K10 million cash bail in self recognisance with two working sureties who should come from well recognised institutions.
Magistrate Malupenga has since set December 6, 2012 as trial date.
Meanwhile, some members of Bishop Matongo’s church and family filled the magistrate court ground as they offered solidarity to their leader.
The group, comprising women and men clad in their white garments, were ferried to and from court in buses.

So true Imprezza, I followed this story at the time and was very dissappointed when the man died before he could be prosecuted. So this ***** is following into his fathers footsteps. If i were the parent to these girls i would chop off his sausage. why waste time.
i can’t believe we have such people among us. why would the whole church travel to court to listen to such a case? check out the members. i suspect their lives depend on him so much. they well know if he sinks they sink too…but that is not how life is.the dead are buried and the living continue living till they die whether by choice or not. authorities must dig dipper in this case. if the father got away this man must not if he is guilty.
