Opposition political party leaders have made a joint passionate call to all Zambians to stand together and defend the country’s democracy which they claim is under assault.

The opposition leaders said Zambians should not allow President Michael Sata’s alleged dictatorial tendencies to erode democracy and basic human rights.

The leaders held a joint news conference at the UPND Secretariat in the wake of the detention and arrest of MMD leader Nevers Mumba with of his four MP’s and other senior party officials.

The two MMD Vice Presidents, Michael Kaingu and Brian Chituwo, UPND President Hakainde Hichilema, Alliance for Democracy and Development Charles Milupi, ZDDM leader Edwin Sakala were some of the people that attended the news conference.
Others include Mike Mulongoti and political activist Dante Saunders and several opposition MP’s.

In his remarks, ADD leader Charles Milupi reminded Zambians that the country’s democracy was hard won and should be preserved at all costs.

“We were lucky that in 1990, the man at the helm was a kind hearted man and he agreed to our demands to move this country into multiparty democracy but now we have something else at State House,” added Mr. Milupi.
Mr. Milupi charged that President Sata is not a democrat and would do everything possible to see Zambia return to a one party state.

“This is a call to all Zambians, let’s not allow this break down of the rule of law and we simply watch. Let’s all speak out against such excesses.”

Mr. Milupi added, “Parliament has abrogated its responsibility to protect our constitution and now it is up to us Zambians to defend our own freedoms and liberties.”

And UPND President Hakainde Hichilema said the events of the past few days have confirmed that President Sata is a brutal dictator.

“Many Zambians did not know this but some of us saw this a long time ago. You have a dictator at State House, I am not talking about just a dictator but a brutal dictator.” In the history of this country it is happening for the first time that people need to get a police permit to walk or drive on public roads, it’s the first time that the opposition is not allowed to hold meetings,” Mr. Hichilema said.

Mr. Hichilema said any objective Zambia can easily see that the country has been degenerating since the PF government came into power

Meanwhile, Mike Mulongoti who campaigned for the PF government in the 2011 elections charged that Mr. Sata has failed to govern.

Mr. Mulongoti said Mr. Sata’s failure to govern is being manifested in his desperation to silence divergent views.
“I like this united stance we have put up, this is the way it should be. From now on, let’s stay united and defeat this suppression of people’s rights and freedoms,” Mr. Mulongoti said.

He also apologized to the MMD leaders who were present at the news conference saying campaigned for PF because he was fighting for his survival.

“I know that when I was campaigning for the PF many people in MMD and other opposition parties were affected but I was also fighting for my own survival. I had to survive,” said Mr. Mulongoti.

Political activist Dante Saunders observed that the PF government is pushing Zambians on the edge so that it could clamp down on citizens when they protest.

Mr. Saunders said the PF government wants to ban some political parties and some NGO’s and is now looking for ways in which to carry out such an exercise.

He advised Zambians to remain calm and not allow the PF to take away their liberties.

  1. “We were lucky that in 1990, the man at the helm was a kind hearted man and he agreed to our demands to move this country into multiparty democracy but now we have something else at State House,”

  2. The best way to start defending your followers is to be observant of the subtle laws such as paying your dues, carrying due diligence when filling portfolios and explaining your economic duty to your constituents in a pragmatic manner. The state of the nation at the moment is such that both the perpetrator and the victimized have glaring irregularity that is leaving the innocent bystander bewildered and vulnerable…

  3. One group that has disappointed me on its remaining quite on this issue is the student union movement. Students have always joined in the fight against oppression but the current crop seems aloof. We are the future and need to ensure that we are not let with a broken country. We need to stand up for what is right.

  4. One question is what is mulongoti fighting for now. Most politicians including Sata fight for their own survival, and unless as a people we can show them that they need to fight for the people that voted for them, we will have governments that impoverishes people rather than improving their welfare

  5. This statement made me feel there is still hope for a better ZAmbia

“The two MMD Vice Presidents, Michael Kaingu and Brian Chituwo, UPND President Hakainde Hichilema, Alliance for Democracy and Development Charles Milupi, ZDDM leader Edwin Sakala were some of the people that attended the news conference.
Others include Mike Mulongoti and political activist Dante Saunders and several opposition MP’s”

  6. We tried to warn you PF fanatics back in 2011 that your king was not trustworthy and had dictatorial tendencies but you naively dismissed us.Now good luck trying to get back your prized mbuzis from the mouth of the crocs.

  7. This must be the beginning of working together,my advice goes to hakainde to avoid undermining the intellignce of other leaders.Selfishness should be fought at all costs, as servants of the zambian people let’s bring our resources together to fight Sata. By the way where is General Miyanda,Edith nawakwi and Elias Chipimo? They are PF cadres.

    • hakainde will never change, already he is seeing himself as the top gun inthis group. jast wait and see. also i would urge them to follow protocols and procedures when they want to hold rallys and meeetings so that we see what govt does instead of daring the govt.

    • There you go again for sure you are a rumbler, you just have to say something negative about hh, no wonder alliances fail becoz of low thinking people like yourself who just see their favorites as the only viable top guns

  8. An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission visited Lusaka October 25-November 5, 2012 to review economic developments and prospects. The mission had fruitful discussions with Finance Minister Honourable Alexander Chikwanda MP, Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba, Bank of Zambia Governor Dr. Michael Gondwe, Senior Ministry and Central Bank Officials, and Representatives from the Private Sector.

At the conclusion of the visit in Lusaka, Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba said:

“…We Are Confident That Growth In 2013 And Beyond Will Be Close To 8 Percent Per Annum,While Other Macroeconomic Fundamentals, Such As Inflation And The Budget Deficit, Will Continue To Remain Within Manageable And Sustainable Limits,

    • So? The IMF is full of economists, not political scientists. What did their report say about the state of democracy?

    • that is under threat and is not likely to be achieved. Dictatorships always lead to suffering, new districts will be created outside budget, stadiums will be constucted at great expence in the middle of nowhere, investors will be deported and any zambian that points out mistakes will be jailed.

    • Zambia’s economy looks great on paper. What about rate of unemployment and cost of living. Every time you notice IMF and World Bank being nice ‘be very suspicious’. These white chaps are not Economic Red Cross. The land and the water bodies belong to us but not much of the minerals and wild animals. Zambians have very little stake in the tourism industry, commerce and mines. “chalo nichako ndalama nizanga” Ba PF wake up! where are the copper profits you promised before state house? The Chinese are developing rapidly using our cheap copper and they stock piling our copper in China. Who will save us from this madness, maybe Chipimo, the rest of the opposition seem selfish.

  9. These opposition chaps want to be doing wrong things in the name of democracy. So far Sata is fine compared to the other presidents zambia have had.Things are running well. You want to bring chaos and be let? No ways!!!! You will be dealt with by the police.

    • the pastor should  Know that the public order act is LAW and was not created by PF so for now what this pastor should do is obey the law and wait for the new constitution. assembly without permit is illegal in Zambia period.

    • Yes Sata has brought order in our country. He is not a dictator. If Nevers opted to respect the Chiefs by making an appointment to meet them and overlook the State Laws ,fellow Zambians do you call that dictatorship?Nevers should shallow his pride as a man of God.What is wrong for him to notify the Police? We all make appointments and thats is a procedure.HH are you telling me that one walks in you office without an appointment?Dont bring chaos in this country.Sata is on right track no wonder IMF is support of PF programs and the opposition is bitter. You were saying PF was not workinbg but things have cahnged you are saying Sata is a dictator?Do you know what dictatorship is all about?

  10. The old man KK has joined his trainee Sata to destroy democracy. The old man really shocks me. This Sata is the same man he used to say he is not presidential material and yet now he sees these qualities in him. Has he finally resigned from UNIP to Join PF? I hope he will inform the registrar so that UNIP does not have problems filling its return next year.

  11. ONE COPPER BULLET ICHIPOLOPOLO CAN STOP THIS SATA NONSENSE. SATA & NYASALANDAN KK ARE DIVIDING THIS COUNTRY.

KK HAS NO SHAME, HE IS A LOST CAUSE WITHOUT HIS NAME RESPECTED LIKE MANDELA’S.

KK IS INSANE AND NO ONE WILL BELIEVE HIM AND TAKE HIS JOKES SERIOUSLY.

    • Are you sure about the copper bullet? And will you contain the Kaponyas that voted for the guy? Wishing hey!! And you are the educated guys?

    • I thin you are really sick, the law is not Sata. Tell your people to apply for permit for Assembly, come on, don’t you get it? It is permit.zm! Who are they to break the law and get away with it? They should lead by example, even the bible tells us to fear the law, Mumba is doing opposite of what he is preaching. He doesn’t honour  what he propheces! What a shame! God is punishing him on EARTH!

  12. It is quite appalling the quality of blogs on this and other Zambian sites. All one reads are mainly insults targeting politicans of all hues and stripes. This is in stark contrast to what one reads on international blogs where the content is issue-based. What caused the Zambian mind-set to be so epithet-prone, one is left to wonder.

    • Great observation! People here move with the winds in unleashing insults. Is it the new way of analyzing issues in our country?

Mulongoti has apologized; he wanted his survival … how sure are we that he doesn’t his survival now?

    • You,Narrant, are trying to put out a fire at your doghouse while leaving your mansion to go up in flames. Why worry about issue-less little bloggers while the elephants in the room(Sata & all MP’s) are bringing zed down with non-issue petty politics?

    • Possibly because most people do not read beyond gossip news. So they lack analytical skills. It is easier to insult than to argue a point out. Points for argument only comes from extensive reading – getting knowledge from others and then sharing it with others. And maybe, just maybe that is the reason why our democracy is still struggling. When you analyse this meeting by opposition parties you clearly see a reactionary situation. For so many years, these are the same people that have failed to give us a good constitution that should govern us. Today we have bad laws such as Public Order Act, Former Presidents houses (why would you build a house for a former president?), First lady budget, an archaic conveyancing Act that predates Zambia etc all because of these same people!

  13. Sounds like most comments you have read come from PF cadres.Should i say more?? the word(s) PF cadre says it all

  14. When PF caders stormed the ACC,there was no permit and no arrest was made.Mr.Jere Solomon once man of GOD but you have failed to leave up to Zambians expectations. We only hope PF will be in office until Jesus comes otherwise you are heaping dry firewood on yourselves.
We are watching this pace.No rallies,no meal meal,no cement,no fuel then you shout were governing.
Zambai has gone to the dogs

  15. The be already taken this country to its knees all we have to do now is wait for the country to drop face down, it’s not PFs problem there doing what there are suppose to do which is distroy the country and to be honest the are doing great job at breaking the country down

  16. You can even tell when you look at the faces of these opposition leaders they are bitter about losing the elections.Nevers of late what did you do to MMD national secretary.HH and Nevers will never rule this country they are just wasting their time.Go PF we are proud of you and Nevers go back to your Church

    • Can you try to discuss without using the overused PF terms like “they are bitter”? I know PF cadres have limited vocabulary but please try to sound a bit different some times.

  17. pliz democracy is vital in zambia, we need a strong opposition for the obvious checks and balances. the only problem am seeing is that the opposition is DARING THE GOVT BY NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES AND REGULATIONS WHEN HOLDING MEETINGS PROMPTING THE POLICE TO BE ON THEM AND THEY CRY FOUL THAT SATA IS A DICTATOR. WHY NOT FOLLOW THE  RULES AND SEE IF THE POLICE WILL DO THE SAME.

  18. Just follow the law ba kuwe imwe. You think you can continue breaking the law and expect the police to turn a blind eye ? High time we stopped politics of emotions in Zambia.

  19. I THINK SATA’S MOVE IS FINE BCOZ IT HAS CAUSED THE OPPOSITION TO UNITE COME ON ONE PLATFORM WITH ONE VOICE. IF YOU (OPPOSITION) CONTINUE WITH THAT UNIT WE (THE ELOCTOLET) WILL REMOVE PF AND PUT YOU THERE ON CONDITION THAT YOU GIVE US A GOOD AND MATURE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE. THANK YOU FOR ACKNOWLEDGING OUR POWER, BUT REMEMBER NOT TO LASH US, WE DO THINGS AS WE PLEASE!! MY NAME IS WISDOME.

  20. keep on crying. we all know that you are just fighting for own survival confirmed by ka Mulongoti. i would rather listern to Mushota who is doing her PHD n about to marry a white man

  21. goodmorning and gudnite guys

Can someone tell me who were sata’ classmates? I have never heard him talk about them. did he go to school or not? please help me comrades.
    merry xmas

  22. Difficult to trust african in this case zambian politicians. They are all behave the same! They are so good at pretending to be holier than thee. They will all turn out to be dictators, tribalists, corrupt, financial thieves, you name it! To day they cry the loudest foul cry tomorrow they slide into corrupt ones, tribalists, dictators, selfish, thieves, undemocratic, etc. These bad tags have always been there during KK, FTJ, LPM, LBB and now MCS. Oposition have always cried foul ever. Now they seem clever and better, tomorrow they will be the worste. What will make Mulongoti better than Sata? These guys want to break the law and then raise dust about it! What a strategy!  Better a bird in hand than the one flying. Just let Sata rule, give him chance, obey laws.

  23. #25 They were no classmatess those day. people were learnin under a day. call them treemates. coming to your question. The simple answer that they are all deceased.:)

  24. One thing that baffles my mind is how low we have sunk in terms of analyzing issues as a people.we want to glorify lawlessness and label people charged with the responsibility to oversee that law and order prevails in our country.what these politicians are saying is not true, that the rule of law has broken down.what i have seen is order is being restored and law breakers are crying foul.

  25. Like Sauders said, if the Zambians calm down and think as wise as the opposition did today, then they will understand that Sata and his Kabinba are annoying pieces of things.

  26. As much as I do not support people who intend to destroy the hard earned democracy, I do not like the way some opposition political parties come out to defend the same democracy. Take for instant Mulongoti, he was in the forefront to have the Abuse Of Office clause removed from the Constitution. I do not think Mulongoti is best man to talk about democracy. And I salute the President Micheal C. Sata for distancing himself from Mulongoti. Indeed Mulongoti needed to survive and that was the reason he supported the PF (selfishness). It is all about himself not the suffering majority of Zambians. The same goes for the fake pastor Mumba of MMD. In my opnion this pastor can even kill somebody for to get what he wants. Come 2016 Zambians will see dramma of pastor Mumba. I rest my case.

  27. Mulongoti says he was fighting for his survival! My question is “In Which way was he supposed to survive? I suspect since he was not given a political appointment, he is not surviving. Careful MMD and UPND, Mulongoti wants to survive in your parties.

  28. # 10, Hamiyanze, If hear u well, u are saying the economic outlook is good, please do some reading on economics…it need someone with intelligence to manage state,PF is using expansionary policies, build roads, rail, police houses, hospitals etc, nothing wrong, but its all about expenditures no income generating sources, they are borrowing from banks to pay farmers and other project, this will cloud out private investment. When government expenditure increase the private sector will suffer, look around today NON of the private sectors have done well in the last 12 months, so where will Sata get money to pay 5000 additional teachers, police and soldiers if the private sector shrinks?,and inflation will go up due to huge wage bill for govt, i expected the Politicians above to address these issues.

    • The economics you are propagating was 100% applied in Chiluba’s regime, and what did we get? We got a very run down economy. Please keep your theories to yourself man.

  29. This is the reason why Southern province cannot vote for Sata. Southern knew way back what Sata would become when he becomes president.

  30. Sata and his gvt are just *****s who use force for anything even where no one would be against them. Insecure all the time.Watch how much they ransack our country of its resources. The gimmick is to divert our attention to other things instead of the economy.let them tell us where the 750m facility is being spent. How much is still there?

  31. Sata is the devil himself. That’s why his senior devil Kaunda has joined him because devils flock together. I repeat my message that we bembas should stop being so tribal while using our talkativeness to accuse others of the same. If not for tribe Sata is not and has never been presidential material.

  32. THESE ARE ALL MAD PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ONLY BITTER BUT SERIOUSLY, ‘THUGS’. MOST OF THEM ARE SCARED OF BEEING VISITED BY THE LAW FOR WHAT THEY STOLE FROM THE POOR IN THE NAME OF LIQUIDATION. OTHER SAW MILITIA IN SUDAN AND THEY WANT TO PRE-EMPTY THEIR COURT PROCEEDINGS. I AM APPEALING TO ALL COMMON ZAMBIANS NOT GO AND RISK YOUR LIVES FIGHTING THESE STATE HOUSE FANATICS.

  33. # 10 Hamiyanze. Any economic growth evaluated by local experts or IMF, OEDC or any donors is based on MMD government economic plans bearing fruits today. PF government has hardly put any economic plans (if ever they have any) to register any thing in their name. Dr Guy Scott is on record that PF hasn’t got any economic plans except that of MMD. To begin to punder to the public of the praise and confidence made by these bodies of PF govt is self deception. The world and Zambians knows where the truth lies and are now only worried of dictatorship griping the nation. BBC and other western media have made negative comments about political events in Zambia with PF rule of one party dictatorship.

  34. The opposition are just bitter, this government will take us to the promised land. We have already witnessed significant progress with the PF. Building a swimming pool in 90 days, fighting corruption as can be seen by Malawian judge Chikopa’s tribunal are good examples. And who cares about the current exchange rate? we are rebasing, soon it will be 1 dollar to K55. The current mealie meal shortage is caused by the opposition, the caring people of this God-sent government cannot allow people to suffer. Oh! and how dare the ACC investigate Wynter and GBM without the presidents approval! this is unheard of. By 2016 Zambia will be the envy of the region, just wait.

  35. MIND YOU THAT IF THE ZAMBIANS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WERE HAPPY WITH YOU GUYS, MUMBA WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN BOOD LIKE THAT AT CHISOKONE MARKET AFTER HIS RELEASE. HH IS REALLY CHILDISH, HOW CAN THE POLICE START ARRESTING ORDINARY PEOPLE JUST DRIVING ON THE ROAD? HE SHOULD KNOW THAT THE PUBLIC ORDER ACT WILL MAINLY AFFECT YOU AS A PUBLIC FIGGER BECAUSE WHEREVER YOU GO YOU ATRACT THE PUBLIC.
    THINK TWICE BEFOR YOU TALK.
    SELENI TUBOMBEKO.

  36. The opposition is coming together now but come 2016 selfishness will creep in because every political party’s president wants to be Republican President. There can only be one president at a time. If you continue with this united front and at an opportune time merge and create one force then go to elections and democratically elect a presidential candidate and his management team then the chance of removing PF from power in 2016 tripatite election becomes feasible. The only way to get rid of PF in 2016 is by putting up a united front like 1991 where everybody put Zambia first.

  37. What rule of law collapsing are the opposition talking about? The problem is that the opposition want to create confusion by breaking the law deliberately and expect the government to sit and watch!!!!! Follow the law and stay out of trouble, simple!!!!! The so called opposition is a batch of nothing but frustrated, bitter and power hungry people who would want to make Zambia ungovernable! PF be strong!!!! Most of us, Zambians are seeing your positive plans and we are behind you!!!!!!

  38. Zambians do not trust this opposition leaders, since mulongoti enlighten the truth that they are there for their own survival but not us Zambians who put  them into power. No wander MMD has thieves.Viva sata do not allow thieves to join PF.It does not matter the names they call you

  39. The opposition MUST wake up and realise that their strategy of not respecting the rule of law and then crying foul when the law enforcement agents follow them or nab them is seriously back firing. We all are aware that HH made serious wild allegations about militia training in Sudan and he is now in court, Mumba instigated violence agianst his own national secretary Maj. Kachingwe and his thugs are now booked. It is ill conceivable startegy that if the politicians behave like lumpens, get arrested and scream dictatorship, then the Zambian masses will rise against the PF government. Currently most ordinary Zambians actually believe that Mumba & HH have become a band of political notoriety misfits. CHISOKONE MARKET PROVED, OPPOSITION MUST STOP DARING THE GOVERNMENT THROUGH BREAKING THE LAW.

  40. Politicians never cease to amaze me. Does anyone believe that if HH or Nevers were the president of Zambia they would allow anyone and especially any opposition parties to hold demonstrations or meetings without following the law? Zambians should not confuse a crack on indiscipline for dictatorship. Allow indiscipline in the country and the country will surely go down on its knees.

  41. We are not stnpid Mr Mulongoti, not long ago you were an obnoxious little chihuahua snapping at every moving living creature, so who are you trying to fool? Not us, maybe morons in the ka small regional party as for us you politically dead. Bring on 2016, we wire you lot into extinction only Gen. Miyanda will remain standing.

  42. We call them bunch of losers!! If you are not appointed in government you cry foul that MCS is a dictator. Attention seeking at all costs. Seleni tubombeko. Shi chilufya ponona ba koote aba!!

  43. Just because you are opposition doesn`t mean we should give you special privileges to be breaking the law anytime you feel like.Do the right thing and nobody will have a reason to touch you.Grow up.

  44. Which Zambians do you want to fight for you guys when you have told us that you always fight for your survival? This is what Mulongoti said at the meeting you had. And really this is true coz you increase your salaries 100% while you remain quiet on us poor Zambian when we are paid  500 pin. Useless politicians you are, thus don’t cry to us for help. More over you must also follow the law just as we poor Zambians follow it… Shaaaa.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

  45. These are just shameless opportunists who would sale the grandmas for a photo opportunity; these greedy shameless chaps only care about the backsides nothing else. Who are you cheating? When have they ever stood up for the real problems affecting joe public?

  46. Politics of survival mr mulongonti you thought you will be given a job as appreciation for campaigning for pf sori Presido sata and his team nibopenya malume. I ve lost respect for the opposition because of undermining the intellignce of one other. The only hope for opposition in Zambia is Elias Chipimo and his party keep up with yo focused political moves we are behind you.

  47. Any party which would take over power would have it’s flaws. So please leave PF alone, you are just bitter and envious.

  48. These PF *****ss the only word they know is bitter. Things are going wrong in Zambia and they call anyone critical of the current situation bitter. You foolss have got to wake up and realize that Sata cannot lead the nation, you can tell the how good the leader is by the people he chooses to work with. When was the last time he addressed the nation??? *****ss

    • Tell you Party to apply for permit, simple as that. Your Pastor thinks is too big for his Pants! Sata was jailed many times too for the same faults, so who is Mumba  KACESELE!

  49. the pastor should  Know that the public order act is LAW and was not created by PF so for now what this pastor should do is obey the law and wait for the new constitution. assembly without permit is illegal in Zambia period. But you do not need a permit to meet the chief the police were wrong,

    • As a Politician its better to obtain a permit for Chiefs are non partisan.Nevers had gone to see the Chiefs with a hidden Agenda. He had wanted to denounce Hon.Namulambe for he had received information that Hon.Namulambe was going to resign from MMD and join PF,but he left it too late. Why going with a large team and MMD Copperbelt MPs all from Lamba the land to meet the chiefs Zambians you may smell a rat from our brother.Nevers your tricks have been expossed sorry.

  50. This is just circus. So who will support Mulongoti’s party if he does things without thinking, only to recant them later?

  51. I agree with u @Cacitikanalelo 100%.Whom do dese shameless demagogues want to full? They left acheic laws . We told them not 2 so but 4 instance Mulogoti said,’It was not good 4 some pipo 2 b in jail .’The hypocrity was refering to Ftj. Hypocrites!

  52. HH must b a big blind leader .lf he was not he was going to create a complete way of doing politics from these ancient ones mmd is playing. U break the law ,the police arrest u scream at the top of your voice that their no democracy.Hypocrites!

  53. UNITED MAD DOGS…you are going nowhere, explain to pipo that very soon they will see good things from PF…its not a one day job! under MMD things went to negative, slowly things are normalising. Its not campaign period,we don’t hear such from other countries but Zambian opposition no time to give the party in gvt to work.

  54. Just accept SATA is the president, betterness will take you nowhere, hey i thot Milupi is a man to support in the future….now i ve realised its marubish ours is SATA
