Share

A 3-year-old female child was yesterday burnt to death in Kanyama Compound Lusaka, after her sibling aged six decided to light a candle in the absence of the mother who had gone to collect money within the area.

The incident occurred last night at around 21:00 hours.

Police believed that the elder sister to the deceased decided to light a candle which was on the table near to the curtain and the fire spread rapidly.

The elder Sister later managed to escape unhurt leaving behind the victim inside the house.

All the household goods have since been burnt to ashes although the value is not yet certain.

The body of the deceased is lying in U.T.H. mortuary awaiting postmortem.

This is according to a statement from Police Acting Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga.

  1. These incidents are so heart breaking. Sad that a young life has to be lost in such tragic circumstances. If the mother didnt really go chasing her debts, she will have to live with this all her life. MHSRIEP after such a very short life

    • The fact that people are still living in such conditions is just pathetic! My country men are still using “koloboi” tsk…tsk.

  2. we need to start charging some of these women with ofences for these deaths to lessen, who goes to collect money at 21.00hrs. She was probably drinking and left children on their own with no adult supervision, our laws are very lax. Some of us have been single parents for long and have even lived in candle light but we know that you never live children unsupervised especially in candle light. We need the law revised to start caging these parents seriously.
