Opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) President Nevers Mumba has dismissed as lies the projected bumper maize harvest for the 2013/2014 farming season.
Government has projected a bumper harvest for the 2013/2014 farming season with maize production expected to be over 3, 350, 671 metric tonnes.
But Dr. Mumba told Qfm News in an interview that the scientific projection government has made is a complete fabrication which people in the country should not believe.
Dr. Mumba said he is convinced that such fabrications are based on the same platform of alleged lies the ruling Patriotic Front used to get into power in the 2011 general elections.
He said this is because it is already clear that Agriculture policies that can possibly support the projected bumper harvest have been misplaced.
The MMD leader stated that it is also in the same vein that the other projections the government is making on the country’s economy are nothing but alleged lies as no Zambian in his right mind can believe such projections when the cost of living in the country has drastically gone up.
Dr Mumba said it is also clear that investments in country have slowed down.
He said this is the reason why Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda and Bank of Zambia (BOZ) Governor Michael Gondwe should step down on moral grounds owing to the poor performance of the economy.

I had been sending cash back home to grow maize, not fully assured what would come of it. Thank God for my family and two workers who put in a lot of work. I visited the farm during my current holiday. We have a lot of maize to be harvested.

There was even a time when RB started instructing FRA to buy Maize which was still in the field, whose moisture content was still very high. Who is fooling who?

Before any comment or reaction consider how the input was and then determine the out put. I see no reason of insulting .After all some of us we do not even know the cost of farming but just buy finished products. On the Other hand the government should not fully consider the productivity of successive commercial farmers who does not depend on it like those in farm blokes. They should largely concetrate on peasant farmers who largely depend on government for the farming inputs, if it is positive and higher than last year then nothing is obsecure.

I would have loved an equally ‘scientific’ counter-claim that comes out with facts and figures from the Shadow Agriculture Minister of MMD. A long long time ago, we used to estimate maize production at the Ministry of Rural Development from primary data provided by Extension Officers stationed all ove the country. Within 30 daus of the rains, Extension Officers would transmit estimates of hectarage cultivated and planted. Taking into account all factors – rain patterns by region, total area planted, availability of inputs and fertilisers, etc, etc, it was possible to estimate projected production to within 30 %. As the season progressed through Jan, Feb and March, the margin of error was narrowed to to within 10%.
Working in public service then was most enjoyable for the use of EDUCATED knowledge. There was NO preoccupation with stealing, lootin, corruption, unretired imprests, unearned entitlements, etc!
It would be helpful if Mumba could base his rebuttal on statistical evidence. But then I don’t suppose the MMD has access to anyone who can give them figures. These days it is not enough to just rubbish what somebody says without providing data. Mumba must know where the University of Zambia is. He can try to consult a researcher there.
Mr Mumba, whether there’s a bumpy or bumper harvest should not be the opposition political issue.
Why not let the farmers’ union speak for themselves?
Come election day you will start denying that Nkumbula airport, hospitals, ZR and many tangible infrastructure developments have not taken or are not taking place.
