Lodge owners in Kafue not complying to minimum wage

Share

Chiawa Ward Councillor in Kafue district Soda Nyasanga says most of the lodges operating in the area were paying their workers low wages.

Mr Nyasanga said lodge owners have not complied with the minimum wages as they were paying their workers salaries as low as K300.

He told ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday that the salaries most of the workers were getting were too low to enable them look after their families especially that most essential commodities have shot up.

Mr Nyasanga said he reported the matter to the labour officials in Kafue and Chirundu districts following the complaints he had been receiving from workers but the two respective offices have not yet made a follow up over the issue.

And efforts to get a comment from the labour office in Kafue proved futile.

Last year, government revised the minimum wages for shopkeepers and domestic workers to be at K1, 100 and K522 respectively and workers falling within the category of shop workers would get K1, 100.

Meanwhile, Mr Nyasanga has urged proprietors of lodges operating in the area to market the Chiawa cultural village as a tourist attraction to their clients.

He said the cultural village which is located in the Chiefdom rarely receives tourists who lodge at the various guest houses in the area.

  1. Nelson Mandela used to said that Israel is much worse compared to South Africa during the Apartheid era. This was coming from a guy who has been up close & personal with the Apartheid system.?
HOW THEN ARE THEY TREATING OUR BLACK PRESIDENT?

    • Are you really normal to write this comment? What message are you trying to convey because you are very incoherent! You might as well travel to Israel and join your Grandfather in that Mental Hospital because you have lost your mables!!

  2. Israelis throw plastic bags filled with dog poo at pregnant African women in Israel .African women cannot give birth in the same hospitals as jews… how is Sata being handled by racists?

  3. It appears that you must have a funny name to be elected in Kafue. The MP is “Obvious” and his councillor is “Soda”.

  4. This is one of the industries Zambia needs to develope. Law, Policy and procedure should be clear cut and adhered to. Low pay and racism is evident in some of these places….usually from owners who have run away from SA or Zim but brought with them the very ugly ideologies that got them and will get them kicked out but because it’s in the bundus they think they can get away with it.

  5. setting minimum wages is only part of the problem. if a shop makes a profit of 3000 per month, what do you want the owner to do? he has to pay for electricity, buy the same worker lunch, pay the guard. at the end of the day he has to be in business so he uses the calculator to ensure that he pays what he can afford. i am not saying that all of the shops cannnot afford to pay these minimum wages but clearly they are others that are struggling particularly zambian shops – they are the majority in this class. how many of us pay 522 to our maids? may be 10% of zambian maids get this. the question is why?

  6. Its called a business. Therefore it must comply with local and national law. Salaries are included in overheads. Therefore scrounging on salaries is wrong and probably used as a tax dodge. One would increase the business efficiency by laying people off HOWEVER…the flip side is that those people getting paid below minimum wage would have absolutely nothing if they were laid off as a cost saving and those still employed would be loaded with the extra work load and also castigated if they didn’t achieve because of the “reflected” potential increase in wage to abide. HOWEVER…there is bound to be evidence of maximising profits by ignoring the law. Who’s supposed to monitor this ? (rhetorical question)

  7. Just so you guys are aware, Israel is an African country and this is not just geographically, but through shared history as well. Take Zambia, for example, Simon Zukas (the freedom fighter) is Jew. All over the black world, the Jews have been partners with us. So, in other words, the president’s choice of such a wonderful place as a vacation place is really wise; no doubt he is having fun on the Tel Aviv waterfront.
