Outspoken human rights campaigner Laura Miti has questioned UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema’s leadership qualities after the events around the murder and funeral of UPND member Grazier Matapa.
In a statement, Ms Miti said the development confirms that Mr Hichilema urgently needs to rein in his party cadres.
She said the manner in which the UPND cadres conducted themselves on the day of the burial was unacceptable.
“The manner in which they conducted themselves on the day of the burial was way beyond the pale. In this regard, I have a few questions to the UPND leadership and especially the President Hakainde Hichilema.
- Was the carrying of the coffin through the streets of Lusaka authorized by the party leadership?
- If it was, does the leadership agree that that was a very uncultural and self-serving act whose appalling end was inevitable and therefore could have been predicted by anyone who cared to interrogate that “strategy”?
- If the carrying of the coffin was decided on in the lower echelons of the party, by unruly cadres, does the leadership agree that they are losing control of the party?
- Does the leadership understand that they need to rein in the very volatile and dangerous sense of being hard done by now pervading the party?
- Does the UPND and especially President Hichilema understand that no political unhappiness can ever justify violence or its threat nor will it be countenanced by the wider citizenry? If they do, what are they doing to ensure their cadres understand that cardinal point?
Ms. Miti reminded that no politician or any political interest is worth engaging in violence for.

She added that no political interest is worth sacrificing the peace that has ensured that Zambians are able to survive inept self-serving government after inept self-serving government.
After the events around the murder and funeral of UPND member Grazier Matapa, it is very clear that the UPND President urgently needs to rein in his party cadres.
“I will end by repeating something that I wish Zambians would understand.
No politician, not one, nor any political interest is worth engaging in violence for. No political interest is worth sacrificing the peace that has ensured that citizens are able to survive inept self-serving government after inept self-serving government. Because we have peace, single mothers, unemployed youth, out-of-work adults can wake up in the small of each morning to eke out a living one way or another,” she emphasised.
She added,
“Our peace is therefore not a sentimental attribute. It is vital in a country like this one in which public resources are never directed to improving lives of citizens. In short, government, politicians do nothing for the ordinary woman in the various compounds of this country. She lives without government. Her life is in her own in her hands. For that reason, her ability to survive must not be jeopardised because politicians want to get into or stay in State house.”
Ms. Miti said, “Zambians only need to look at the great lesson former President Rupiah Banda taught us in the last election to understand how dumb the enmity between cadres of different parties in Zambia is.
‘Not 3 years before 20 January MMD and PF cadres were at each other’s throats. They were willing, it seemed, to shed blood and they certainly were destroying each other’s property. Not 3 months before 20 January 2015 cadres hated each other,some for RB and the others for PF. Then an internal battle in MMD later and RB was best friends with PF flying around in the ruling party chopper. He did not consult the cadres that had engaged in battle for him nor could he argue he was doing this for anyone other than himself.”
Ms. Miti further added, “Simply the point is Zambian politics is shallow and only about the interest of politicians. These guys, all of them, have shown how easily they will jump from one party to another at the offer of a simple DC or ambassadorial job. We as Zambians must be prepared to hold all of them to account for the way they act.”
She said, “We need to insist that those in office improve our lives and those in opposition engage with those in power in such a way that ensures they govern in the interest of the nation. The unquestioning support of any politician is what leads to the tragic events saw at the burial of Mr Matapa. Even more worrying is that they have led to stupid conflicts in many countries on this continent and Zambia, believe me, is not immune.”

I have a feeling that zambian are now playing dangerous political game. We always say zambia is a peaceful country. My question is simple , to what extent, level etc. what is it that we call peaceful zambia. A drop of water will one day make a dam, lake etc.

Blaming HH for the actions of UPND demonstrators is cheap politicking.

Look at the recent attack in Mongu at the at airport during the campaigns. Do you think Lungu would have restrained his cadres from avenging the assault of their cadres? Hell No, only true leaders like HH can have such control over their followers.
On this occasion involving Matapa’s death, UPND felt pushed beyond what they could stomach and defied HH ‘s call for a peaceful conduct because they strongly felt vengeance is the only way to tell the PF minions, that they can get can revenge their suffering at the hands of PF minions.

I still doubt if the police has indeed arrested them. I think the police are just issuing statements to calm the situation down.

I have always looked at Laura and her level headed comments with admiration. Although the questions she asks are deep and deserve to be answered by UPND and HH, she shows bias in that she has NOT addressed the underlying violence by PF. The president is on record that Matapa died from beer related violence – is that really a valid explanation from a caring head of state? How could EL know or have this information when the police have said they are still carrying out investigations? Death of a single citizen for political reasons robs us all as community and currently EL is not showing appropriate concern as a leader. He and NOT HH will be to blame should victims opt to take the law into their own hands: what realistic options do they have? what options were in Rwanda or Biafra?

There’s nothing wrong with using funeral procession to convey a political message of dissent and protest (it happens all over the world). Afterall the man was killed by political opponents. What is disgusting and flabbergasting, here, is to denounce through this jaundiced and clearly biased press statement, the very people that are “hard done by”. People mourn in different ways. I have seen coffins being carried along roads. Some are transported in open carriages etc. I think the police should have just looked on as the procession was going on and leave the hurting mourners in peace. Why did ZP not stop the procession in its infancy along Mumbwa Road? What was the motive of doing it many kms after it had started. Loss of a loved one is painful.

I doubt that HH could have influenced the cadres to behave in the manner they did, they were clearly agitated by circumstances and negative statements from super powers which appeared to down play cause of death. The police should have allowed them to mourn their beloved one in the manner they saw fit as long as they were not breaking the law or being violent.

I am quite disappointed by Laura on this one. I like and respect her a lot but she let me down on this. It’s not cultural to attack the bereaved at the height of mourning. She very well knows the perpetrators yet says no word about the death. She clearly presented an un balanced rhetoric which is brainless. How she directs her venom to HH is unthinkable. Funerals in Zambia are decided by families and not by offices they hold. I don’t think Laura is too stupid not to know this. I hope she co es clean and apologises to the bereaved family and to HH

Great article. All it requires is reasoning. Political violence must be fought but let’s use this violence as a campaign tool, because soon someone might start to killing and beating his own people in a bid to get political mileage, that stinks. All Zambians all of us Must stop violence but let’s not use it as a campaign strategy for that strategy might backfire big time.
