  1. How about a more comprehensive breakdown of ALL professionals in the country? (Acturial Scientists, lawyers, accountants, quantity surveyors etc. It’s distrssing to note the low numbers of practicing professionals cited in the report, nevertheless. Certainly not enough to drive the country’s developmental agenda

  2. These are not professionals please but merely degree certificate holders.
They cannot create nothing my friend and are paid for merely acquiring this useless paper like papa Sata would put it

  3. 50 years after independence and we only have a thousand doctors to a population of 14 million…something is seriously wrong and we can not even pay them handsomely. A politician like the defence minister with a certificate is being paid more than a doctor who has had 7 years of training….we seriously need a politician like the Tanzania’s new president in Zambia.

  4. this type of data should not be privy to one line ministry, organisation or individual but should be made available to all stakeholders and the general public for effective national planning.in the first place we have schools and highr learning institutions without first hand information on careers and professional progressions becoz Central StatisticsO operates like an island.in the end you have uninformed career guidelines and choices. like this we may end up with 15 profesionls and 15m lumpens

  5. less than 1000 doctors, engineers! someone has to redefine unemployment for me. isn’t it true that there’re countries with qualified doctors, engineers roaming streets? even that number of teachers may have to be desegregated for a clear picture of the strengths in that area

  6. How many doctors have come out of UNZA and why are they leaving? Are there measures in place to retain them?

These are the questions that would produce a more comprehensive picture.

  7. Something is wrong here! How many doctors? 1450? How many are at Consultant level?. This is a scandal, a 400 bed hospital in UK has more than 70 Consultants, besides registrars, junior doctors, and various specialty doctors. I am staggered to see these figures after 50 years of independence. What are we doing?

  8. This must be a lie. How can such a large country have so few medical doctors? And why are you giving us 2011 data? This is nearly 2016

    • @Kwisa, visit the website hpcz.org.zm and you will see the full list of doctors registered in Zambia for 2015! On the website you will see all the list of all health professionals and institutions in the country – always try to verify data before commenting.

  9. Leaving Zed was the best decision I’ve ever made in the last millennium. Personally if I was in Zed, awe katwishi.

  10. UNZA has being producing doctors since 1966 or is it early 70s.How many proffessional doctors, electrical, structural, mechanical, chemical and civil engineers are produced yearly in Zambia at UNZA and CBU?The numbers given are too small and are less than what you can find in the city or town of Kano only in Nigeria.

    • My friend do not compare Kano to Zambia, I have been there many times.

Do you know the population of Kano? Or the ratio of doctor per head?

This breakdown was fine as a start. The fact that they are tracking is good. But they need to act on this data. How? They do not know.

  11. I don’t want to hear another word from Ministers about how bad things are and how there isn’t enough money, until they all agree to start heavily taxing the mines. Or at this stage, get some real dividend paying top level shares of Anglo-American De Beers, Royal Dutch Shell, ING, etc. That is where Zambia’s money is going, when it does not tax the mines to the max, because finance ministers and mining ministers have taken a bribe and make the rest of the country suffer. Of course the transnational corporations will always find someone else to bribe – therefore the system must be made bribe proof.

    • I agree with you @MrK but how do we make the system bribe proof? We have seen how people even in opposition champion high taxes and change suddenly to support mining companies against governments intention to apply the same when they get campaign funds from mining conglomerates! Bribes these days cut across the political divide or ruling party or opposition! It is our lack of patriotism which has put us at the mercy of these mining companues and it is costing us!!

  12. Education is very expensive in Zambia and those number will remain stagnant for a long time. How many professional are unemployed should also be taken into consideration. Despite the low numbers in professionals, there many out there who unemployed.
