Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) leader Kelvin Bwalya Fube has said opposition unity should be anchored on credible solutions and practical policies rather than efforts to remove individuals from office.
Fube said past opposition alliances made the mistake of focusing primarily on removing the Patriotic Front from power, instead of presenting clear plans for national development.
His remarks come in response to calls by Brian Mundubile, chairperson of the Tonse Alliance, urging opposition parties to unite ahead of the August elections.
“We will not repeat that error… unity must be based on a clear, structured, and people-centred roadmap,” Fube said.
He emphasized that unity should not be about removing the United Party for National Development or President Hakainde Hichilema, but about addressing the real needs of citizens.
Fube added that ZMP remains open to collaboration with any political party whose ideology aligns with the aspirations of the people, but warned against alliances driven by personal ambition or political convenience.
He further stressed that true unity requires humility, honesty and sacrifice, including the willingness of leaders to step aside for the greater good if necessary.
Fube also cautioned against political rhetoric that masks self-interest, saying Zambians are looking for sincerity and practical leadership solutions.
He noted that his party is taking a cautious approach to alliances, drawing lessons from previous political engagements, and will not join any arrangement that risks betraying public trust.
“Unity that does not serve the people is not unity, but manipulation,” he said.
