Three people have died following a shooting incident in Lusaka’s Makeni Villa, including a state lawyer, his sister and her husband, who police say later turned the gun on himself.
The deceased have been identified as Innocent Nyambe, 39, Theresa Nyambe, 43, and Clifford Chileshe, 45.
According to police, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon after Theresa Nyambe returned to Kanyama Police Station to follow up on an assault complaint she had lodged against her husband two days earlier.
Police said Theresa had reported on Monday at around 23:00 hours that she had been assaulted by Mr Chileshe at their residence in Makeni Villa.
She reportedly sustained a cut on her upper lip, swollen eyes, bleeding from the nose and general body pains. A medical report was issued and a police docket was opened.
Police said that at around 14:00 hours yesterday, Theresa Nyambe, accompanied by her younger brother Innocent Nyambe, returned to the Victim Support Unit at Kanyama Police Station, where she was issued with a call-out notice for her husband to appear before police.
The two later proceeded to the residence to serve the document.
According to police, shortly afterwards, Mr Chileshe allegedly shot both Theresa and Innocent before fatally shooting himself.
Police said they received a report of the shooting in Makeni Villa at approximately 15:43 hours from a resident, Chapatuka Mwiche.
Upon arrival, officers found Theresa Nyambe lying unresponsive near the main entrance of the house.
After forcing entry into the locked house, police discovered two more bodies inside, one on the floor and another on a couch.
Preliminary investigations indicate that all three sustained gunshot wounds.
Police said Theresa Nyambe sustained three gunshot wounds, two to the chest and one to the right arm.
Innocent Nyambe sustained four gunshot wounds, three to the chest and one to the left leg, while Mr Chileshe sustained a gunshot wound to the chin, with the bullet exiting through the top of the head.
Police recovered eight spent cartridges from the scene, two outside the house and six inside.
Investigators also recovered two pistols, identified as a Canik pistol loaded with nine rounds of ammunition and a Millennium G2 pistol loaded with five rounds.
Two motor vehicles found at the scene, a Nissan Navara registration number GRZ 160 CZ and a Subaru Impreza registration number ASB 1539, were also secured by police.
The bodies of the three deceased, identified by relatives, have since been taken to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations will be conducted.
Police have opened an inquiry into the incident.
