Government should Stabilise Payment Cycle for Civil Servants – NAREP

NAREP
NAREP

The National Restoration Party (NAREP) is concerned that like many others in the private sector, Civil Servants are getting paid either on the last day of the month or an alternative random date without any official policy changes on pay dates. Consequently, this raises fiscal challenges which in turn affect the whole spending cycle in the economy.

Major companies and employers such as the mines are known to pay out all their salaries at month end. The random government decision to “move” Civil Servants’ payday to the end of the month has created difficulties in money in circulation and has impacted access which in the long run may cause artificial shortages of commodities are created as the spending public has access to spending money at the same time. If caution is not taken, this may result in increased cost of goods and services resulting in increased inflation rate.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) e.g. “tuntembas” may not get any business during the course of the month as everyone simultaneously awaits the end of the month to be able to spend. Price increases may also be triggered by this higher demand of goods and services during the spending period. It’s in this regard that we are asking the government through the Secretary to the Treasury to revise the pay day for Civil Servants and revert to the old and traditional dates of mid-month. This will allow circulation of money in to the economy throughout the month as opposed to the current trend which threatens to affect the economy negatively. This is evident through the serious cash shortages experienced during the month and if not addressed, we risk having many companies laying off employees or closing down.

The government should seriously consider implementing our advice as soon as possible to prevent escalation of the situation. Reverting to the mod-month pay dates will strike the necessary liquidity to improve the economy.

NAREP’s doors are open for any further advice on this matter.
