Acting Copperbelt Permanent Secretary (PS), Joyce Nsamba has commended shop owners in Ndola for responding positively to the re-launch of the “Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy “.
ZANIS in Ndola reports that the PS said it is gratifying that the business community is in support of the move which is aimed at promoting cleanness in all cities and towns across the country.
Mrs. Nsamba who participated in the cleaning exercise expressed happiness that Councilors from various wards in the district joined the crusade.
She has further urged Councilors to ensure that they replicate the cleaning exercise in their wards.
And Ndola Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya says the cleaning exercise should be embraced by all Ndola residents.
Mr. Bwalya said it was embarrassing that it had to take the Head of State to call for all local authorities to ensure that their towns and cities are clean.
He added that, as local authorities, Ndola City Council and other councils in the country have a mandate of ensuring that issues of public health are dealt with.
Meanwhile, Ndola Deputy Mayor Kennedy Lasagna has urged all shop owners to ensure that their shops are painted as the local authority will close all those that will not comply.
President Edgar Lungu has directed all government leaders and Zambians to stop talking and start working in order to get the job done.
The Head of State noted that there has been a lot of procrastination among those charged with implementing programmes and projects hence affecting delivery of service.
President Lungu observed that since Zambia’s independence over 53 years ago there have been several action programmes by the many regimes that have governed the country without feasible success.
The president said he wants to be seen and judged differently hence his resolve to adopt a work and no talk approach to the many programmes being devised by government and the private sector to make Zambia green.
ZANIS reports that President Lungu said this when he officiated at a double event of Plant a Million Trees and Keep Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign at Chakunkula Basic School in Munali Constituency in Lusaka.
“It’s time to cut the talk, and do the working. So I have come to this school to work and not to talk” said President Lungu.
He said the country recently launched the Plant a Million Trees and Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy campaign hence the need to start working to ensure that the programmes succeed.
President Lungu said people need to understand the importance and participate in planting trees and keeping surroundings clean.
The president led the way in sweeping the surroundings of the school where he and his entourage planted citrus fruit trees.
Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo and Ministers for Higher Education Nkandu Luo, General Education David Mabumba and Lands Jean Kapata and several permanent secretaries, government officials and other stakeholders joined in the cleaning and tree planting.
President Lungu also toured the school’s tree nursery and planted seedlings of various citrus trees that will be supplied to the Plant a Million tress Initiative for planting around Lusaka District.
And speaking earlier, Minister of Lands Jean Kapata said her ministry will ensure that it provides technical support to schools to develop and manage citrus fruits nurseries and orchards.
Minister of General Education David Mabumba made assurance that the over 4 million pupils in primary schools will all participate in the Keep Zambia Clean campaign and Plant a Million trees initiative.
Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo said there is need for patriotism among all Zambians to clean their backyards in order to ensure that the programme of cleaning the city and country succeeds.
Plant a Million Trees Initiative Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel ChibesaKunda urged Zambians to cultivate habits of planting economic trees such as citrus fruit to help replenish the millions of trees that have been cut over the years.
MTN Zambia acting Chief Executive Officer Mwenzi Mulenga said her organization is ready to support the implementation of campaigns to ensure that they become sustainable.
Ms. Mulenga said her organization will embark on a 21 day yellow care programme next month to help residents of Lusaka’s Ngombe Township to clean up their neighborhood.
She handed over a generator set to President Lungu donated by MTN Zambia to Chakunkula Basic School.
And area Member of Parliament Nkandu Luo thanked President Lungu for coming to her constituency to kick start and implement the two programmes.
Every last Saturday of the month, businesses are expected to shut down and all Zambians to take up positions and participate in cleaning up their backyards and communities in order to make their surroundings clean, green and healthy.
Football legend and former Cameroonian national team striker Samuel Eto’o thrilled people in Lusaka’s Bauleni area on Friday (May 25) as he visited the community’s football pitch, which is being rehabilitated by Zambian Breweries, as part of its responsible alcohol programme
The soccer giant was in Lusaka for the first ever Castle Africa 5’s football tournament to be hosted by Zambia and joined the Area MP and Minister of Finance Hon. Margaret Mwanakatwe in Bauleni where they handed over sports and educational material donated by Zambian Breweries.
The community was later surprised with a visit from the First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda, who counselled youth on the importance of fair play, and working together, and the need to avoid harmful practices.
The four-time recipient of the African Footballer of the Year award noted that football is a great tool for developing communities, especially in underprivileged ones, and promoting good in society.
The Bauleni Primary football pitch, aims to help in developing football talent as part of the Zambian Breweries goal to create a better world by engaging youth on constructive activities through sports under its three-year responsible drinking programme.
“It is an honour for me because it wasn’t too long ago that I was in a similar situation; football made me the person that I am today. It’s an honour and a pleasure for me to be a part of this initiative that is giving back to the community,” said Eto’o, who was also accompanied by his counterpart and Castle Africa 5’s ambassador Christopher Katongo.
“We hope that with this legacy pitch, the youth will direct their energy towards harnessing their sporting talent rather than spend it on unproductive and harmful activities such underage drinking, drug abuse,” added Zambian Breweries Country Director Jose Moran.
As countdown to the final begins, Eto’o’s presence at the five-a-side tournament adds another dimension of excitement even as the teams gear up for the matches on the 26th and 27th May, 2018 at the Futsal Complex in Longacres, Lusaka.
Zambia will be represented in the continental finals by Stout One FC who will go up against their southern central African counterparts from South Africa, Lesotho, Tanzania, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. The winning team will walk away with an opportunity of a lifetime to watch the 42nd match at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, hosted by Samuel Eto’o.
“We are very excited that Zambia is hosting the inaugural Castle Africa 5’s Continental Final which is currently the biggest of its kind in Africa. The tournament showcases the spirit of friendship and unity through football. We are also happy to be hosting our friends from around the southern African regions, who share the same passion as we do for the beautiful game,” said Mr Moran.
Castle Lager has sponsored football on the African continent for over 60 years and continues to provide fans with the opportunity to live out their passion for the beautiful game through this unique and exciting five-a-side tournament. .
The popularity of five-a-side football, a variation of association football in which each team fields five players, has grown considerably in recent years and is now played by millions across the globe.
Mr Moran concluded on a lighter note: “Now is when the hard work begins for the teams as this is the final leg of the competition and they have to bring their best game. But only one can come out on top so we look forward to crowning the winners. All the same, there will be a lot of comradery and we hope that family and friends turn up in numbers to give their support.”
Zambian Breweries continues with its dream of bringing people together for a better world by supporting music, cultural and sporting events.
As one of the world’s leading footballers, Eto’o won 14 major trophies, including the prestigious UEFA Champions League three times, twice with Barcelona and once with Inter Milan.
The 36-year-old former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea star, a four-time recipient of the African Footballer of the Year award and who has also played in three World Cup tournaments is an inspirational figure to up-and-coming African players.

TAZAMA Pipelines, a joint venture between the Governments of the Republic of Zambia and the United Republic of Tanzania, has handed over its FIRST EVER DIVIDEND Cheque to Zambia, 50 years after the establishment of the company in 1968.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, a K6 million cheque, representing two-thirds portion of the dividend, was received by the Minister of Finance Hon. Margaret Mwanakatwe who is the shareholder in TAZAMA on behalf of the Republic of Zambia.
Tanzania will receive K3 million, proportional to its shareholding in TAZAMA.
“18 months ago, President EDGAR CHAGWA LUNGU and his Tanzanian counterpart PRESIDENT JOHN MAGUFULI both expressed concern about non-performing State-Owned-Enterprises. This was during President Lungu’s visit to Tanzania.”
Mrs. Mwanakatwe said the dividend declaration is a pleasing response to the concern raised by the two leaders as it demonstrated the positive impact that good governance practices can achieve on institutional performance.
“TAZAMA is a success story of friendship of the two Presidents and of hard work of the peoples of the two nations; it is a success story of corporation by neighbouring countries and presents a model of how peaceful relations between countries can culminate into positive developments,” stated Mrs. Mwanakatwe.
She added that “this event speaks positively of Government to Government business cooperation and negates the notion that Governments are unable to do business together and create wealth for their peoples.”
And Energy Minister MATHEWS NKHUWA has said Government’s aspiration for the Petroleum sector is to ensure an adequate reliable and affordable supply of petroleum products.
“To achieve this, it is imperative that all players in the sector are well aligned to this policy objective,” he said, adding that, “a number of reforms are being pursued to ensure that we have a vibrant petroleum sector and satisfy the demands of the country so that economic growth and development are propelled to greater heights.”
And TAZAMA Board of Directors Chairperson Brigadier General Emeldah Chola [Retired], who is also Zambia’s Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary highlighted that TAZAMA recorded a profit before tax of K50.4 million in 2017, an increase of 104% from 2016.
She attributed the positive result to improved throughput and prudent cost management measures put in place by the Board and Management to improve the performance of the company, and added that: “TAZAMA has opportunities for improvement, diversification, and modernization of business operations.”
“This will be done through a number of projects that TAZAMA intends to embark on such as pipeline expansion, construction of a finished products pipeline, and installation of a fiber optic infrastructure,” she said.

Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili has castigated Chiefs defending President Edgar Lungu over the land he received from King Mswati of Eswatini.
Mr. Kambwili has wondered why all of a sudden some Chiefs have jumped to the defence of President Lungu when they are supposed to be providing moral guidance to citizens.
He told Q-news that the chiefs in question should apologize to Zambians because their acts are embarrassing.
Meanwhile the case in which Mr Kambwili’s son Mwamba is charged with two counts of being in possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime has failed to take off because the matter has not yet been allocated to a magistrate.
Despite the ACC giving the accused stringent instructions to appear before court without fail or risk having his bail revoked, ACC prosecutors were not present at court.
The matter comes up on Monday, 28th May, 2018, for possible allocation.
The Teaching Council of Zambia (TCZ), has closed down 10 Colleges on the Copperbelt which have been operating without licenses.
TCZ Assistant Director Joel Kamoko Said the institutions were shut down following the teaching Progression Act No. 5 of 2013 which states that no institution shall hold out as a college or Provide training activities without the approval and inspection of the teaching Council.
Mr. Kamoko advised students at the college to always ensure that they consult the District Education Board Secretary (Debs) on which colleges are registered before enrolling into any institution.
He said it is sad that some people enroll into institutions without knowing that they will have a hard time in finding employment because the College they attended is unregistered.
The teaching Council who were accompanied by Copperbelt Provincial Education Officer (PESO), Dominic Nyambe Closed down a Satellite College in Kalulushi which offers primary and secondary teaching programs.
And Dr. Nyambe has urged all Zambians running colleges across the country to abide by the law and follow the right procedure when establishing them.

Summit entitled “United Nations Chiefs of Police” (organized by the United Nations Police Division, Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO)) United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UN COPS) (OPENING REMARKS) – Group Photo of Chiefs of Police with ASG DPA Miroslav Jenca, USG DPKO Herve Ladsous, UN Deputy SG Jan Eliasson & USG DFS Atul Khare
The United Nations will commemorate the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. Today, more than 96,000 uniformed personnel from 124 troop- and-police-contributing countries serve under the blue flag, alongside more than 15,000 international and national civilian staff and nearly 1,600 United Nations Volunteers.
In his message to mark the Day, Secretary-General António Guterres announced that he will spend the Day with United Nations Peacekeepers in Mali “to express my solidarity with colleagues facing high casualties and enormous volatility.”
This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of UN Peacekeeping, the flagship enterprise of the Organization described by the Secretary-General as “a proven investment in global peace, security and prosperity.” “We express our gratitude to the more than one million men and women who have served under the UN flag, saving countless lives. We honour the more than 3,700 blue helmets who have paid the ultimate price over the past seven decades. And we pay tribute to the 14 peacekeeping missions working around the clock to protect people and advance the cause of peace,” according to Mr. Guterres.
At a time of increasingly complex conflicts and rising peacekeeper fatalities, the Secretary-General said: “As we recognize a legacy of service and sacrifice around the world, I am also committed to taking Action for Peacekeeping — action to make our operations more effective and safer in today’s challenging environments.”
Upon his return from Mali, the Secretary-General will preside over the observance of the International Day of Peacekeepers at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Friday, 1 June. He will lay a wreath to honour those who lost their lives while in the service of peace and will also officiate at a ceremony to posthumously present the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal to the 129 military, police and civilian personnel who lost their lives in peacekeeping operations during 2017.
Among the fallen peacekeepers to be honoured are three from Zambia: Warrant Officer Class 2 Boyd CHIBUYE, who served with UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA); Police Sergeant Naomi ZULU and Police Inspector Bright SIKALINDA who were deployed with the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
Zambia is the 21st largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN Peacekeeping. It currently contributes nearly 1,100 military and police personnel to the UN peacekeeping operations in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan and South Sudan.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said: “Our peacekeepers – civilian, police, men and women, military personnel – save lives every day. Today, we honour those who have sacrificed their lives in service to peace. Their service and sacrifice inspires us to work harder to support a sustainable peace in some of the world’s most complex and challenging places.”
“We owe a debt of gratitude to the brave men and women who risk their lives every day in service to others, and we grieve with the families and nations of our fallen colleagues,” said Under-Secretary-General for Field Support, Atul Khare. “But beyond gratitude, we owe our peacekeepers all the support we can muster to ensure they are well-equipped, well-trained and well-prepared to complete their missions successfully.”
The General Assembly established the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in 2002 to pay tribute to all men and women serving in peacekeeping, and to honour the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace. The Assembly designated 29 May as the Day because it was the date in 1948 when the first UN peacekeeping mission – the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization — began operations in the Middle East.

GOVERNMENT in Mpulungu is considering terminating a contract awarded to Roan lawmaker Chishimba Kamwili’s company Mwamona Construction to build 30 houses for displaced families it has been learnt.
However, Mwamona Construction site manager, Davis Mwila, said it was ZESCO that was delaying the project for failing to pay workers and that the matter had actually been taken to court.
This follows protests by villagers who were promised houses three years when they were displaced from their settlement to allow for the construction of a hydro power station.
A Daily Nation team that visited the construction site found that a total of 15 houses were either at window level or roofed while the rest were in the initial stages of construction.
In an interview with the Daily Nation in Mpulungu, district commissioner Dennis Sikazwe said Mwamona Construction Company had taken too long to finish building the houses for the families that were displaced during the construction of the Lunzua Hydro Power Station three years ago.
He explained that the displaced families were divided into three groups with first opting for cash compensation, second group were resettled in Isoko village while the third group wanted houses in Mankonga area, which contracted was award to Mwamona Construction.
He said individual households that were displaced were given land near Mpulungu Boarding School and Mr Chishimba Kambwili’s company was contracted to build decent houses for the families.
“It is sad that Mwamona has taken three years to construct the homes of these families and up to date not much progress has been made hence the said families have no decent accommodation and have been inconvenienced since then,” said Mr Sikazwe.
He said the displaced families had lost patience and wanted to know the way forward.
He also claimed that the construction company had not been paying their workers, causing the project to stall.
THE Lusaka High Court has rejected Chishimba Kambwili and UPND Mazabuka Central MP Garry Nkombo’s application to join a case where two private citizens have sued the Attorney General over the Speaker’s decision to table the impeachment motion of President Edgar Lungu.
When the matter came up for ruling yesterday, High Court judge Banda Bobo refused to join the duo on grounds that they, despite being the movers of the motion, do not have sufficient interest to warrant them being joined.
Judge Bobo said the two were forum shopping by seeking to be joined to a judicial review on impeachment on matters that were already before the Constitutional Court.
Mover of the motion; UPND Parliamentary whip, Nkombo and Roan MP Kambwili being the seconder, had asked to join the case on grounds that any decision which would be arrived at would affect them.
But the applicants, Mr Robert Chabinga and Mr Henry Mulenga urged the court to reject Mr Kambwili and Mr Nkombo’s application.
They argued that Mr Kambwili and Mr Nkombo had not demonstrated their interest in the matter, adding that their application for joinder was anchored on a wrong provision of the law.
The applicants said for a party to be joined, they must demonstrate that they were entitled to or share interest in the subject matter of the suit or are likely to be affected by the results.
They argued that the fact that the motion movers may be affected by the decision of the court does not give them sufficient interest or authority that entitles them to be joined to the proceedings.
The applicants said the Attorney General was already party to the proceedings because he was the custodian of matters that were of public interest.
The applicants challenged the two parliamentarians to state whether they are opposing, supporting or wish to join as friends of the court.
Southern Province Minister Dr Edify Hamukale
Southern Province Minister Edify Hamukale has called on youths to take advantage of the country’s peaceful conditions and participate fully in issues of national development.
Dr. Hamukale said there is need for the youth to make themselves available to be used as tools of development in emulating freedom fighters who in their youth age supported the liberation struggle.
He said the struggle by freedom fighters is what led to the peace the country is now enjoying during the Africa Freedom Day celebrations in Choma.
Dr. Hamukale however assured freedom fighters of government’s determination to continue developing the country in appreciation of efforts they put in for the country to attain its independence.
Meanwhile, freedom fighters in have praised government for the continued peace and security Zambian people are enjoying.
Benson Hakoola commended government for various efforts aimed at uniting the nation on behalf of over 20 freedom fighters that attended the African Freedom Day Commemoration in Choma.
Mr. Hakoola said peace in the country is very important because a country in war cannot develop.
He said the African day is a uniting day that all Africans and Zambians in particular must celebrate together without any political segregations.
Mr. Hakoola expressed disappointment that some people have continued to shun such important events on the basis of partisan politics.
