Tutwa urges LAZ to withdraw from President Lungu’s 2021 Eligibility case

Lusaka Lawyer, Tutwa Ngulube
Lusaka Lawyer, Tutwa Ngulube

Lusaka Lawyer, Tutwa Ngulube has urged the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to withdraw its participation from the Presidential eligibility case. Mr. Ngulube said that LAZ is not a political party to be taking part in cases involving political organisations and that LAZ did not consult its members before joining the case.

Mr. Ngulube who is also Kabwe Central Member of parliament has told ZNBC News that it is wrong for LAZ to be incurring legal costs on cases that the membership did not approve.

And another Lusaka lawyer, Hobday Kabwe also said that the LAZ executive may need to rethink its decision to join the Presidential eligibility case that is before the constitutional court following the removal of the Linda Kasonde Executive which made the decision for LAZ to join the case.

Mr Kabwe said that the Association cannot be joined to a case without getting a fresh mandate from the membership adding that he did not expect the new executive to hold on to some decisions that were made by the previous executive.

Some members of LAZ have expressed concern over the Association’s decision to join the case.

This is a matter in which four opposition political party leaders have insisted that President Edgar Lungu is eligible to contest the 2021 elections because he did not serve a full term after being elected in 2015.

Kitwe United suffer third loss

3

Kitwe United suffered their third loss of the 2018 FAZ Super Division season after succumbing to a 1-0 loss to Forest Rangers on Sunday at Garden Park Stadium in Kitwe.

Striker Laurent Muma scored a 78th minute goal as Forest edged Kitwe to jump from 10th to seventh position on the table with 17 points after playing 10 matches.

Muma’s strike was deflected into the net after hitting a Kitwe defender in the box with keeper Lameck Siame completely beaten.

Chingalika will rue several chances wasted in both halves of this Week 10 match which they dominated in front of their hostile home supporters.

Kitwe top strikers Lyson Sikaonga and Austin Muwowo were the major culprits in missing opportunities.

Muwowo sent his 3rd minute header just over the bar with Sikaonga poorly heading a cross off target from inside the box few minutes later.

Nine minutes into the game, Forest had Damiano Kola’s goal ruled out for offside by referee Milton Mweemba.

Meanwhile, promoted side Kitwe remains on 13 points after playing 10 matches.

President Edgar Lungu with Foreign Affairs Minister Joe Malanji at State House during the New year greeting ceremony with High Commissioners and Ambassadors accredited to the republic of Zambia
Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Malanji has said that it is frustrating and disappointing to see chiefs take centre stage in championing politics of division.

Speaking, Sunday, when he officiated at the Ukusefya pa Ngwe’na fundraising golf tournament, Mr Malanji said Chiefs must ensure their activities do not tarnish the respect Zambians have accorded the cultural emblems.

“We are disappointed with some Chiefs who want to lower their status by taking the centre stage in active politics,” he said

“A Chief is accorded respect by any Zambian regardless of where one comes from but it is frustrating and disappointing to see how some chiefs are taking centre stage in championing politics of division”

The Minister, who is also President of African Golf Union, said that it was gratifying to see His Royal Highness the paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba Speaking people playing a pivotal role in educating his community on the importance of education and the hindrances early child marriage pose in the development of a country.

The Minister announced a personal donation of K80, 000 between him and Malole lawmaker Christopher Yaluma, to be given to Chief Chitimukulu to aid the fight against early Child Marriage to called.

NDC in Northern Province is intact-Sinkonde

The opposition National Democratic Congress has refuted reports that its entire Northern Province has resigned and rejoined the PF.

NDC Northern Province Youth Chairman Gridgeney Sinkonde said in a statement the reports are part of cheap propaganda being peddled by PF.

“I want to tell the people of Northern Province, Zambia and the whole world that there is NO provincial executive member who has resigned and rejoined the PF. The reports in the ‘Zambia Dairy Mail’ newspaper purporting that we (Northern Province NDC executive) have resigned is a pure lie which the Patriotic Front issued to gain political mileage,” Mr Sinkonde said.

“Here is the truth about the 4 members who were used by PF to mislead the nation, namely, Francis Chileshe Chanda, Mulenga Samuel, Phiri Kelvin and the former NDC Chairman for Luwingu district. Francis Chileshe Chanda was NOT an executive member the time he resigned. He was demoted from his position as provincial chairman by NDC Consultant Hon Dr Kambwili and was with immediate effect replaced by Mr Bwalya Godfrey.”

He added, “Similarly, Phiri Kelvin who claimed to have resigned as Kasama district NDC youth chairman was NOT a serving member the time he resigned. He was demoted on 16th March, 2018 due to lack of competence and was replaced by Peter Mumba immediately.”

He said the other two members mentioned above, are the relatives to Francis Chanda Chileshe, the former provincial chairman and therefore were his blind followers.

“From my personal view point, these two people had nothing in their heads to contribute to the growth of the party but were only driven by Francis Chanda Chileshe who also happens to act like a mosquito without direction. It is therefore ridiculous on party of PF party to celebrate over something which is not real,” he charged.

Mr Sinkonde said the NDC provincial executive members for Northern are currently busy preparing for the forth coming local government bye-election in Chumba and Musowa wards scheduled to take place on 5th June, 2018.

“We (PEC) are intact. We are working tirelessly to see to it that Northern Province becomes NDC biggest strong hold which we have almost achieved. We won’t be shaken by desperate PF officials who depend on lies for their survival.”

Meanwhile, NDC Parliamentary Candidate Webster Katongo has told a media briefing this morning that he will support PF Candidate Mama Maria Langa in the forthcoming By – Election.

Mr. Katongo has since Defected from National Democratic Congress (NDC) to the Patriotic Front Party – PF with immediate effect.

HPCZ to ensure competent health personnel serve the health sector

The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has clarified that the introduction of licensure examination for health practitioners is meant to have competent and skilled health workers in the country.

HPCZ Senior Public Relations Officer Terry Musonda says the country needs skilled manpower which will serve the nation diligently.

Mr Musonda said this in an exclusive interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today.

He called on health students in training institutions to fully apply themselves in the practical oriented courses so they may acquire more skill in order to obtain the professional license to effectively perform in the industry.

Mr. Musonda explained that the Council is on a transformative agenda of ensuring that the medical industry is served with qualified and skilled personnel as it is one industry which is delicate.

“As a council it is necessary to assess the competence of various practitioners before they are given practicing licenses”, he said.

He added that the licensure examinations were introduced last year and has since received overwhelming response.

Mr. Musonda disclosed that the Council is set for the May examinations and appealed to students to apply themselves and take the opportunity to obtain the licenses.

He stated that there has been calls from the general public for the various health practitioners to be well equipped and skilled in various fields.

More Government Vehicles impounded

The Impounded Government Vehicle
A joint operation by Government Transport Control Unit (GTCU), Road Transport Safety Agency and the Zambia Police Service in Solwezi district has impounded government vehicles for abrogating government regulations.

The operation that was mounted at different points around the district intercepted and impounded nine government vehicles due to driving without a weekend pass and failure to produce the competence certificate as required when driving a government vehicle.

Speaking to ZANIS, during the operation yesterday, North-western provincial GTCU inspector, Catherine Tembo said that operation that has been going on for over a month now has seen a reduction in such cases.

Ms Tembo said it is saddening to note that some government workers still do not want to comply with the regulations despite several reminders.

She said government officers should comply with the clear stipulated law on use of government vehicles to avoid misunderstanding with the unit.

“Government workers need to understand that the government is losing a lot of money because of abuse of government vehicles causing development to lag behind in the country”, Ms Tembo said.

Meanwhile, some local motorists commended the efforts by GTCU and encouraged the unit to extend operations to other districts in the province.

Musanya Musanya said such operations are very vital to help keep government officers in check because the abuses of government vehicles are a cost on tax payers.

And The Controller of Government Transport (CGT) unit in Muchinga Province yesterday swang into action impounding several Government vehicles and motorbikes for various offences.

The team lead by Head of CGT unit in Muchinga Province Saint Chisha impounded a total of 17 vehicles in Chinsali alone within two hours of a surprise operation mounted at Nambuluma police check point , about 15km from Chinsali Town.

The team in Isoka led by Christopher Katongo , CGT officer, also impounded three government vehicles for not following stipulated rules and regulations of Government motor vehicles.

In an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) shortly after a successful operation in Chinsali and Isoka districts, Mr. Chisha said from the 17 Government vehicles impounded yesterday in Chinsali, 10 drivers have been charged for various offences and they are expected to pay penalties of fines ranging from K350 to K750 at the Provincial administration accounts section on Monday morning.

Mr. Chisha warned that all the officers who have been charged will be followed up if they do not show up tomorrow to pay the fines.

Mr. Chisha has since warned Government officers to desist from misusing government vehicles adding that government was spending a lot of money to service and repair the vehicles using tax payers money.

Mr. Chisha also disclosed that similar surprise operations will be conducted to ensure that the rampant abuse of Government vehicles is controlled.

Mr. Chisha said among those charged, are drivers who were moving without weekend passes, un authorized log books and failure to produce their competence licenses.

He noted that most Government drivers in the district ignore the stipulated rules and regulations of driving a Government motor vehicle stressing that such kind of mentality portrays a bad picture towards Government.

Mr. Chisha who is also the Chief Human Resource Officer at Provincial administration, further said the team in the province will not spare anyone abusing Government motor vehicles.

Electoral Commission of Zambia to disqualify violent parties

ECZThe Electoral Commission of Zambia has issued a stern warning that it will be compelled to cancel and disqualify anyone found committing acts of violence in the by-elections slated for 5th June 2018.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Margaret Chimase says the commission is deeply concerned with rising levels of intolerance and political violence that have characterized the nominations on 3 may 2018 so far.

Ms. Chimase has stated that the electoral act and the electoral code of conduct both empowers the commission to suspend all campaigns and disqualify candidates that will be found wanting.

She has since appealed to all political parties to urge to refrain from acts of violence or risk disqualification.

Meanwhile ms. Chimase has revealed that the commission received reports of intimidation from their officers of an incident in Luangwa ward, Nyimba District that took place during nominations to which the commission is actually addressing.

She says the commission reaffirms the stakeholder expectations agreed upon by the church mother bodies and political parties on Monday 30th april 2018.

Ms. Chimase adds it is important that political parties honor their expectations which include the need for political parties to refrain from clashing and verbal disputes in an addition to provocation which can propel undesirable acts of violence.

The Church says it is unchristian for society to abandon and fail to look after orphans and vulnerable children in the country.

Vice President Inonge Wina’s Senior Private Secretary Sheila Siwela says there is need for Christians in the country to abide and follow the commandments and teachings of Christ of coming to the aid of orphans and the underprivileged.

ZANIS reports that Mrs. Siwela said there is more that needs to be done by Christians to uplift the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children in society.

Mrs Siwela said society needs to follow the teachings of the church in order for it to reach out to orphans and the disadvantaged in society.

Mrs Siwela said this when she led the women fellowship from the St Columbus Presbyterian Church in Lusaka to donate assorted items and an undisclosed amount of Electricity units to Chilenje Transit Home.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Chilenje Transit Home, Esther Zulu thanked the St Columbus Women fellowship for the gesture as it will help in meeting the daily needs of the children at the centre.

Meanwhile, Vice President of the women fellowship Mary Muchai urged society to pray for people looking after orphans and vulnerable children so that God could bless them to care for the children and raise them into God fearing and productive citizens.

Mrs Muchai said society needs to embrace a spirit of giving and helping in order for it to reach out to vulnerable and underprivileged people in society especially orphans and the poor in villages.

MINISTER of Works and Supply Honourable FELIX MUTATI is happy to note that the Zambezi Drifter Pontoon at Kazungula crossing point which had broken down has resumed operations.

MR MUTATI commended the ESCO staff for adhering to his one week ultimatum he issued last week.

The Minister said he is delighted with the quick response and commitment that ESCO management has demonstrated adding that the travelling public and business entities will be able to conduct business normally.

He also said the Zambia Revenue Authority will be able to collect the revenue they have been losing amounting to K35 million per day.

This came to light when ESCO Chief Executive Officer Engineer PATRICK LUTANGU NYIRENDA announced that the newly bought gears have been fitted and the pontoon resumed work at about 09:00 hours today.

Last week MR MUTATI directd ESCO management on Friday, April 27th 2018, to repair the broken down Zambezi Drifter pontoon without fail.

“However, am glad to announce now that we managed to fix the gears and normal operations started this morning at about 09:00 hours. The general public can now be free to conduct their business on time,” he said.

Veterinary Authorities in Milenge District have warned people in the area to desist from consuming sick livestock.

Milenge District Assistant Veterinary Officer Beaurick Nyambe observed that some community members in the district have a tendency of slaughtering livestock when they discover that it is diseased.

Mr. Nyambe said the community members sell or eat the diseased animal which is dangerous to the health of the people.

ZANIS reports that the Veterinary Officer said this when he addressed farmers at Milenge Central Agricultural Camp.

Mr Nyambe said there is need for people who keep livestock to always ensure that their animals are checked by veterinary officers before slaughtering them to ensure that they are not diseased.

Mr. Nyambe further urged famers to have their chickens vaccinated against a new castle disease which affects chickens in the months of May, June and July.
