Namibia bans imports from Zambia due to cholera outbreak

56

Namibia has banned the importation of all perishable food, fruits, unprocessed food and water from neighboring Zambia over a cholera outbreak that has killed more than 60 people with over 2,600 cases reported, local online website, New Era reports.

The ban came into effect on Monday and is aimed at containing the current outbreak in Zambia. The country recorded the first case of cholera last year September.

Recently, one case was reported in Livingstone, Zambia, about 200km from that country’s border with Namibia. This case seems to have played a part in the government banning the import of food from the neighbouring country.

A case reported at the border between the two countries is believed to have prompted the ban.

Many Namibians in the eastern Zambezi Region buy – and in some cases smuggle – maize flour and fruits such as mangoes from Zambia, the report said.

Namibia’s health minister, Lempie Onesmus said that health officials are on alert and have taken precautionary measures, including screening people entering Namibia from Zambia.

“When a person arrives, the health officer uses an infrared thermometer to check the body temperature [of that visitor]. If the body temperature is too high, maybe 37 degrees, the device will ring as it has a programmed alarm. It also depends on what symptoms the person has. For instance, if that person has cholera, they will be vomiting and having diarrhea,” Onesmus said.

Zambia has also banned public gatherings in the areas affected so as to contain the outbreak.

Cholera is a bacterial disease causing severe diarrhoea and dehydration, usually spread in water.

Dr. Simbyakula said the African Union diaspora division serves as the focal point and hub for implementing the decision to invite and encourage the African diaspora to participate in the building and development of the African continent.

He noted that the African diaspora in the US serves as a catalyst for rebuilding the global African family in the service of the development and integration agenda of the continent.

Compete in supported competitions – Sports Associations urged

1

The National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) has advised sports associations in the country to concentrate on competing in supported competitions such as the Commonwealth games, Olympics and All Africa games if they are to end their perennial cry for government sponsorship.

Sports Council of Zambia Secretary General Raphael Mulenga said sports federations should not rush to participate in international sporting competitions simply because their respective international Federations have organized them.

Mulenga said participating in supported competitions will enable sports federations benefit from government sponsorship because of the state’s involvement and participation in such tournaments.

“Our Sports federations should focus on the Olympics, commonwealth games, All Africa Regional games because government participates in these through sponsorship”,said Mulenga.

He challenged sports federations in the country to start preparing seriously for the commonwealth games, Olympics and African regional games slated for this year.

Many Sports federations in the country led by the Handball Federation of Zambia have cried out for lack of sponsorship accusing government of largely funding football in the country.

However, Mulenga sympathized with the sports federations stating that the grant his organization receives is not adequate to meet the ever increasing needs of over 40 associations in the country.

He said the sports mother body will this year in 2018 focus on building the capacity of sports federations to partner with the corporate world in sponsoring their various sporting disciplines.

Mulenga said its cardinal that sports federations of minor sports learn to market their associations to the corporate world by marketing products and services from the corporate world.

“Government coffers have competing needs, we need to look outside the box, look for alternatives such as the corporate world. We need to inculcate skills in sports federations of how to market themselves than just writing letters of request, “said Mulenga.

He said in countries where sports thrives, the corporate world has played a pivotal role in developing the sports sector and expressed optimism that the same can be achieved in Zambia.

MTN Chief Executive Officer Charles Molapisi said the contribution was in line with the company’s long-term responsibility to communities where MTN operates, through its corporate social responsibility program.

“The decision to support the Zambian government and local authority is in line with MTN’s commitment to look beyond its main operations by reaching out to the communities through its corporate social responsibility. Curbing the spread of Cholera is not the sole responsibility of the government and this is why we are making this donation to help citizens and local authorities mitigate the spread of the disease,” said Molapisi.

Molapisi further added that MTN Zambia believed the community needed support in ensuring sanitation measures that protect wellness and good health through a clean environment that stops the spread of the disease.

“We believe that even after the country manages the outbreak, health and sanitation must remain a priority and this is why we are thinking long term. There is need to ensure that residents have enough bins and awareness regarding waste disposal.”

MTN Zambia’s corporate social responsibility programme includes the 21 Days of Y’ello Care, an initiative that began over ten years ago as a way of MTN Group responding to social needs in the communities in which the company operates.
