A Civil Society organisation hails the declaration of Chipata as a city

7

CIVIL Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) Advocacy and Communication
Programme Coordinator Maxson Nkhoma has hailed the declaration of
Chipata as a city.
Mr Nkhoma said  that the council and provincial
administration need to work hard to ensure that all amenities required to
be in a city were now made available.
He explained that Chipata needs to have a public university, improved
road infrastructure and improved service delivery such as water
supply.
“This is the only way the administration and service delivery will
be improved to the standards befitting a city,”he said.
He said the city council would need people who were creative enough to
attract serious investment especially in the agricultural sector.
And Kazonga Enterprise Limited Director Evans Ngoma said the
pronouncement made by  President Edgar Lungu to declare Chipata as a
city was exciting.
Mr Ngoma said that since Chipata was a city , there was need to revamp
Luangwa Bicycle Industry and the construction of cooking oil plant
since Eastern province was a major grower of soya beans, groundnuts,
sunflower, and cotton.
He said there was also need for the construction of a textile industry
since cotton was grown in the province.
“And construction of a cigarette making factory should be done and it
can translate into over 4,000 permanent jobs. For this dream to be
met, Government should come up with a deliberate policy to
attract investment in the province such measures could include
declaring the city a duty free zone to speed up developmental
activities,”he said.
He said the railway industry with the awarding of the contract to
China Civil was another milestone which was expected to boost the
growth of the province.
Finally after a 10 years wait, President Lungu whilst in Chipata on
Friday declared Chipata as city.
The campaign for Chipata to become a city was started by late Town
Clerk Bernard Siwakwi.

Mbunda Royal establishment calls on govt to harmonize alleged tribal harrassment

9
The Mbunda Royal Establishment (MRE) has called on government to harmonize the alleged tribal harassment by the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) being shrouded on His Royal Highness Senior Chief Chiyengele of the Mbunda speaking people in Western province.

Speaking at this year’s Mbunda Indaba ceremony held at Kaoma district Council Chamber over the weekend, Prince Professor Biemba Maliti on the speech ready on his behalf by the Mbunda National Secretary Mubanga Liale said government should treat the tree royal establishments namely the Nkoya, Mbunda, and Baroste Royal establishments respectively equally to guarantee peace and sanity in the entire province.

Prof. Maliti who is also the National Chairperson for the Cheke Researchers and Writers Association said mbundas should be left alone to preserve and enjoy their culture, language, traditions, and way of life in the locality adding that other tribes in the Zambia are freely enjoying their different cultures.

“The deplorable inequalities being experienced in the province should not be tolerated, Mbundas shall now stand up for their constitutional and human rights in order to reclaim their long-lost self esteem and dignity,” said Prof. Maliti.

Prof. Maliti urged all the Mbundas to unite and speak with one voice on the matters of infringements being subjected to them by the Lozi people to get attention from government to finally take a keen interest and decisively bring sanity before anarchy worsens in Western province.

He has, however, commended the mbunda fraternity for setting up  Mbunda and nkoya radio station called Cheke radio with the aims of promoting the languages, cultures and traditions of the mbunda and nkoya peoples in the locality.

The Mbunda indaba was attended by Senior chief Chiyengele of Mushuwa in Limulunga, Mwene Lindeho ,and Muundu both from Kalabo and Namulimbwa of Imilangu area in Sikongo districts respectively.

But when contacted, Kaoma district Acting BRE Naliele’s Yutanga (Prime Minister), Namushi Nyambe said that the Kuta is enjoying a cordial relationships with the Mbunda and nkoya royal establishments in the province.

Mr Nyambe said the BRE has never at any time quarreled with the Mbundas from time immemorial and cautioned them (mbundas and nkoyas) to avoid issuing tribal remarks as the trend will culminate into an necessary conflicts.

He said the Lozi Kuta at both Naliele palace in Kaoma district and Limulunga in Mongu are open for any dialogue so that a lasting solution could be reached if the Mbundas feel aggrieved.

“Every tribe in the province is free to exercise its culture and traditions without any interference from anyone or tribes as the people from the olden days have lived as one,” said Mr Nyambe.

UPND advised to discard its political pride and accept President Lungu

118

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema and UPND vice president Geoffrey Malama
THE United Party for National Development (UPND) should discard its political pride and accept President Lungu as the duly elected Head of State, says Bible Gospel Church in Africa (BIGOCA) presiding bishop Peter Ndhlovu.

Last Friday, the UPND in Southern Province vowed not to recognize President Lungu as the Head of State.

In an interview in Lusaka, Bishop Ndhlovu said it was unfortunate that the UPND could reject the election of a President who won the republican presidency through a popular vote.

He said it was an insult of the worst order for one to undermine President Lungu’s victory which had been widely acknowledged and recognized by major governments and credible institutions the world over.

“It is sad that others cannot recognize President Edgar Chagwa; and this is an insult to the Zambian people. We believe that in this country we only have one way we have chosen to govern ourselves and it is only through the ballot. He was elected by the people and declared as duly elected by our institution which governs our elections.

“Therefore, I would like to urge the UPND to come out of their pride and accept defeat because there is tomorrow, there is 2021. For them to continue living in deceit and shun away from the fact that Edgar Lungu is the President, I think they are living in their own world,” Bishop Ndhlovu said.

He advised the UPND to go back to the drawing board and plan for 2021.

“Elections are not over and we have elections every five years and therefore I believe they can still emerge. Unless God allows you to be a leader, this is a Christian nation and it is only God who can ordain and approve you as a leader.

“If someone can fight a God-given leader, they are fighting against their own destiny. I believe we need to reach a point of coming out of politics and focus on development of this country. Southern Province is part of Zambia and in Zambia we only have one President,” Bishop Ndhlovu said.

He called on politicians to embrace the spirit of accepting defeat and congratulating the victors.

“UPND come out of your pride and accept Edgar Lungu as the President. Time will come and if God approves you as a leader there will be no struggle,” he said.

Zambia withdraws Recognition of Western Sahara

President Edgar Lungu welcomes His Majesty Mohammed VI King of Morocco at State House
President Edgar Lungu welcomes His Majesty Mohammed VI King of Morocco at State House
Rabat – Zambia has reiterated its decision to withdraw its recognition of the self-proclaimed Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, an entity established by the Algeria-backed Polisario front in February 1976.

The announcement was made by Zambia’s Foreign Minister Harry Kalaba on Saturday.

“I reiterate my statement made on July 9, 2016 in Rabat,” Zambia’s top diplomat told Morocco’s official news agency Maghreb Arab Press (MAP).

During a visit to Rabat last July, Mr Kalaba had announced his country’s decision to withdraw its recognition of the so-called SADR and cut all ties with it.

In his interview with MAP, the foreign Minister reiterated that his country “supports the efforts of the United Nations to help the parties find a long-lasting solution to the conflict over the Western Sahara.”

“Zambia seeks to contribute in a constructive way in these efforts by adopting a position that is neutral and open to the concerned parties and supporting an efficient dialogue,” he added.

The Zambian Foreign Minister went to add that his country believes that “Morocco’s return to the African Union affords the African family an opportunity to push for this question, which has lasted for a long time, towards a peaceful solution in a spirit of African consensus, dialogue and mutual respect.”

The announcement was made less than a month after Morocco’s return to the African Union and few days following King Mohammad’s official visit to Zambia.

During the visit, King Mohammed VI and Zambia’s President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, chaired the signing of 19 partnership agreements between the Morocco and Zambia.

NGOCC Supports the Payment Of “LOBOLA”

25
Mrs Sarah Longwe during the press briefing

The Non Governmental Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has noted the ongoing debate that has engrossed the country on whether government should regulate or abolish the payment of bride price commonly referred to as “Lobola” in Southern Africa.

As an organization, we note that payment of bride price in Zambia called “Lobola”, “Chimalo”, “Impango”, “Lubono“ and so forth, depending on what part of the country one comes from, is a tradition that defines how we as a people celebrate our marriage rite. However, NGOCC is deeply concerned with the commercialisation of “Lobola” which is de-humanising to women and girls, who are treated as commodities, chattels and sex objects.

Some families are literally using Lobola as a way to make capital and making women and girls as commodities for sale. It is such practices that have led to the misconception that paying Lobola condemns women into commodities that would be abused by men. The high Lobola fee being charged is considered as a price paid for the transfer of a woman’s sexual and economic rights to her husband and his family. It is no doubt that the high Lobola charge has a negative effect on the marital stability and has contributed to the rise in child/early marriages and violence against women and girls.

We call on government through the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs working with Traditional leaders that are custodians of our customs and traditions to guide the country on how to positively establish a marriage contract between two families without destroying the wellbeing of the couple thereafter.

There is also need to sensitize communities that the payment of Lobola should not place women into slavery. A human life is priceless and therefore society must be made to understand that women and girls should never be made commodities for sale to the highest Lobola bidder. Marriage should respect human rights, integrity and dignity of both women and men.

NAREP can Provide A Future that can Build Zambia – Chipimo

11
Elias Chipimo speaking at the press briefing at the NAREP Secretariat
File:Elias Chipimo speaking at the press briefing at the NAREP Secretariat

NAREP President Elias Chipimo? has reiterated the need for the youth to take a lead in the fight for a better Zambia because they determine who will become the next government in 2021. Mr. Chipimo was speaking at the ongoing NAREP Youth convention in Ndola where he observed that, with over half of Zambians being below the age of 15, the future is actually with the youth and that if the youth decided to change government, then government could change. 80% of Zambians are below the age of 35, with today’s youth being the key changemakers in the 2021 elections.

Imploring the youth to take a stance and make it happen in 2021, the President urged them to be focused, noting that he sees so many Zambian youth fighting, insulting, patronising bars and not focusing. He emphasised that this was not what NAREP youth stood for. NAREP is a party of focused youth who are bound by values that they stand for and live up to. Reciting the 8 core values together, the convention delegates pointed these out as Excellence, Integrity, Responsibility, Service, Equity, Humility, Commitment and Community. The NAREP youth representing the NAREP brand should set themselves apart by distinctly adhering to the values of the party without leaving any doubt.

Elias Chipimo was also emphatic on the need for the youth to be ready for 2021 affirming that he is excited about the support he is getting from the youth and honouring them by acknowledging that he draws his strength from them and is also aware that they too are strong when he is strong.

Citing the Bible, President Chipimo said the kingdom of heaven has been advancing forcefully with forceful men and women laying hold of it, the President remarked that we would not get the Presidency on account of someone handing it to us, but we have to take it for ourselves and our future children. Alluding to the suffering that many Zambians are experiencing ranging from poverty, unnecessary deaths to lack of employment opportunities, Elias Chipimo lamented that Zambia is not fulfilling its potential to meet the needs of the citizens under the current regime.

The NAREP youths responded that they could not see a future for themselves under the current government, nor could they see a caring government in the Patriotic Front agreeing that only NAREP can provide a future that can build our country.

Newly elected NAREP National Secretary, Mr. Ezra Ngulube?, a youth himself was congratulated on his journey of integrity and his execution of the NAREP values whilst steering the fight to raise NAREP’s profile with integrity and honour.

Rounding off his address, Mr. Chipimo gave the following points as cardinal to progression of NAREP and Zambia towards Vision 2021:

1. Respect women and girls as custodians and builders of our communities
2. Putting God first in everything we do as NAREP and as Zambians
3. Correct the President. Do not lie to me as your President. NAREP should be honest and hold honour. Mr. Chipimo asked to be correct respectfully when he is wrong and called for everybody to work hard and bring solutions to the President.

Mr Kalaba said the President was also expected to officiate at a business forum organised by the Israeli and Zambian chambers of Commerce and Industry which would focus on investment opportunities within the two countries.

“We are all aware that Israel is a technologically advanced market economy and is globally renowned to have made significant strides in areas such as water management. Our country therefore stands to gain a lot in terms of shared best practices with Israel across several sectors,” Mr Kalaba said.

He said the delegation to Israel would include cabinet ministers from Agriculture, Health, Commerce and Industry, Energy, Tourism and Arts among others.

Mr Kalaba said Mr Lungu would also be accompanied by a business delegation in order to accord an opportunity to the private sector representatives of both countries to interact and forge business partnerships.

The President is happy that the Zambia under-20 national team has started on a good note and encouraged them to even work extremely hard ahead of the upcoming matches.

Chief Kambwali challenges Luapula ministers

15

Chief Kambwali has challenged the eight Luapula Ministers currently serving in President Lungu’s Cabinet to unite and change the poverty levels of the Province by implementing more poverty reduction programmes in the Province.

Chief Kambwali thanked President Lungu for appointing eight Cabinet Minister from Luapula as a strategy of reducing the poverty levels which currently stand at 82 per cent in the Province.

The Chief said President Lungu has given Luapula people through the appointment of eight Ministers a test to see if they can use their privilege to serve in their ministerial portifilios to reduce the daunting poverty for the people of Luapula.

The traditional leader predicted that there might be no other chance for Luapula to have eight Ministers in one Cabinet if this opportunity is not used properly to develop the Province.

He emphasized that if this chance to develop Luapula eludes the region, then Luapula will continue to remain backwards for millenniums to come.

Chief Kambwali reminded the serving Ministers to focus on the campaign promise that the late President Sata made to the people of Nchelenge of building them a Science and Technology Institute.

He disclosed this when Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Buleti Nsemukila paid a courtesy call on him on Saturday.

The Chief said Government should consider providing vehicles for all the Chiefs in the Province to ease their movements when going for their medical attention and reviews including attending meetings in Mansa and travelling to Lusaka when need arises.

He said he is happy with the cadre of civil servants working in Nchelenge because they are dedicated to their work.

Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Buleti Nsemukila disclosed that the President is equally concerned about the 82 percent poverty levels in Luapula and the Province being the poorest  in Zambia.

Dr. Nsemukila said that is the reason probably the President appointed more Ministers from Luapula in his Cabinet to see how best they can help him to improve the human economic and social development index for the Province by reducing the poverty in the region.

He confirmed that if Luapula will fail to develop, the President will not be in the blame but the blame will be squarely on the civil servants who are tasked to implement the Government policies that should improve the living conditions of the people.

The Permanent Secretary said it is the role of civil servants to push for the implementation of political promises for the people to see results for their benefit.

Recently President Lungu when addressing a public rally at Katungulu Primary School grounds in Nchelenge stated that he will from 2017 to 2021 focus on Luapula first because it is the poorest province in Zambia and then western Province to reduce poverty in the two provinces as they are still economically backwards.
