Edith Nawakwi warned and cautioned by Police following abduction allegations

6

The President of the Opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), Edith Nawakwi, has been warned and cautioned by the police in Lusaka, Zambia, following allegations of threatening violence and abduction. The alleged offences are said to have taken place between September 2020 and May 2022.

According to Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, Ms. Nawakwi, in collaboration with others who remain unidentified, is accused of threatening to cause injury and harm to Pheluna Hatembo and Milton Hatembo due to a land dispute. The incident is related to the sale of farm 1924 in Kalomo District, Southern Province, which is reportedly owned by President Hakainde Hichilema.

According to the police spokesperson, the Hatembo siblings fled their homes in fear of potential harm from Ms. Nawakwi and her associates. The allegations include threats of violence if they refused to sign documents intended for a motion in the High Court pertaining to the sale of the disputed farm.

Mr. Hamoonga further elaborated, “While this is the second offence of abduction, it is alleged that Ms. Edith Nawakwi, while acting with others unknown, did force Pheluna Hatembo and Milton Hatembo into confinement against their will at different lodges. She deceitfully lured them to Lusaka from Choma, promising to assist them with a matter she had prepared.”

During their alleged confinement, the Hatembo siblings were reportedly not allowed to communicate with anyone or move freely without Ms. Nawakwi’s authorization. These incidents were reported to have taken place between September 2020 and May 2022.

Following the recording of the warn and caution statement, Edith Nawakwi was released by the police. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, and legal proceedings will be determined based on the evidence gathered.

FRA pays K90 million to farmers in Muchinga

3

The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) has paid over K90 million to farmers in Muchinga Province who started selling their maize to the agency three weeks ago.

FRA Muchinga Province Standards and Quality Officer, Robinson Nyambe says the disbursement of funds to farmers who sold their maize to FRA across the province has been going on well.

Mr Nyambe said in Isoka today, that the farmers have been responding well towards the pronouncement of selling maize to FRA in a bid to ensure food security in the country.

He said government is committed to paying farmers on time, adding that the early disbursement of funds to farmers is a motivational factor.

“The farmers here in Muchinga have been very productive especially in the 2022-2023 farming season because they know that government is quick to pay them”, he said.

And Muchinga Province Minister Henry Sikazwe is impressed with the operations of FRA in the region, stressing that government holds high significance to matters of food security in the country.

Mr Sikazwe stated that farmers who have been paid so far should utilise the money prudently through investing in agriculture as well as increasing productivity in the next farming season.

“I wish to re-emphasize that farmers should completely desist from selling their maize across the border of Tanzania because it is now illegal, ” he added.

Meanwhile, Evelyn Nakawala, one of the farmers in isoka district thanked government for adjusting the maize selling price to K280 per 50 kg bag.

Ms Nakawale said the increase in the maize price has motivated her to improve her yield with about 165 bags of maize sold so far.

She further extended her appreciation to the government for paying farmers on time in the 2022-2023 farming season.

The 54-year-old widow advised that government would do well if it invested in agriculture in rural areas to enable most people to become productive instead of perpetually depending on handouts.

Ms Nakawala said she only gets two bags of fertiliser from the government and buys 15 more bags of inputs using money she saves from selling maize to FRA, adding that her livelihood has been sustained because of agriculture.

Commuters Rights Association of Zambia supports plans to allow motorcycles for public transportation

Commuters Rights Association of Zambia (CRAZ) is in support of the Government’s plans to legalize motorcycles for public transportation.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, CRAZ Chairperson Aaron Kamuti observes that there are a lot of unanswered questions emerging about legalizing motorcycles such as the safety of the passengers.

Mr Kamuti however, advised there need to consider doing research on the safety of passengers before legalizing the use of motorcycles as a mode of transportation.

He explained in some cases there is a lot of conflict of interest where riders would want to beat traffic and use the side of the road which endangers the lives of the passengers on the motorcycles.

“We do not anticipate these motorcycles to be used on the Central Business District (CBD) and we have a population of vehicles that is passing the number of motorcycles,we have minimal roads, this is a danger to the passengers unless we put all measures in place in terms of the safety of the passengers that will be using the motorcycles,”he added.

Mr Kamuti emphasized the need to acknowledge the competence of the riders and to ensure that the riders are credible.

He further suggested that the motorcycles should be used in remote areas or in provinces where there is less traffic, adding that they should not be used in the CBD areas like Lusaka and Copperbelt where it is busy as it can pose a danger to passengers.

She said government has prioritized mining, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism as key drivers for the country’s economic growth agenda.

The Vice President said this when she officiated at the Luncheon held ahead of the official opening of the 95th Lusaka Agriculture and Commercial Show.

Ms Nalumango noted that the agricultural and commercial show is an important day on the calendar as it brings different players of the economy to showcase different products and innovations.

She said the show opens the country to the region and beyond for investments and trade opportunities.

Ms Nalumango stated that the show has also come at the right time when the country is positioning itself for economic recovery.

“I want to thank all the relevant line ministries that have taken part in this year’s show. This is commendable because a number of exhibitors have displayed excellent products and services. And from this, I can tell that as a country we are headed somewhere,” said Ms Nalumango.

Ndola city Council removes street vendors

9

Ndola City Council has removed vendors from the Central Business District where they turned streets which have no sanitary facilities into trading places.

The Council police and the State police moved in early the morning to demolish the makeshift structures which were built in the Chisokone road to bring sanity in the city.

Ndola City Council Director of Public Health Habert Mwanza said vendors were given a period in which to vacate the streets but they failed to follow the directives.

Mr Mwanza said it is illegal to venture into street vending as they are no sanitary facilities to cater for the large number of people that had blocked the Chisokone road for illegal business.

He said in situations where there is food poisoning it’s difficult to trace the source of the food and the entire community can be at risk of a health hazard.

“We are supposed to provide sanitary facilities when we create a market . Unfortunately we do not have any here in the streets and according to the bus stations and market act 2007, street vending is illegal even under public health,” he said.

Mr Mwanza said they have removed street vendors following government’s directives to have the vendors to be trading from the designated markets.

He said police officers will continue to patrol the streets to ensure that no one is trading from along the roads.

The Public health director said whoever will be found trading in streets after removing them will be prosecuted.

Ndola District Commissioner Joseph Phiri said the town environment has to be kept clean and the removal of the street vendors is part of the plan to ensure that hygiene is maintained in the central business district.

Mr Phiri notes that street vendors have been removed because they have been operating in areas where there are no sanitary facilities.

He said it’s unfortunate that some vendors have been using tins to answer the call of nature.

The District commissioner said there will be a lot of talks concerning the removal of vendors from the streets but the cardinal issue is that sanity has to be brought in town to ensure that the vendors operate from the markets.

“Let us not avoid the politics of street vending and support this noble cause as traders left markets in preference to trading from the streets and a change of mindset is needed for us to do the right thing,” he said.

Shalom Mudimba, a trader at Chisosokone Avenue, has welcomed the removal of vendors by the Ndola city council.

Mr Mundimba said the streets used to look dirty and motorists were unable to move freely.

He said government should find better trading places for the people that have been removed from the streets because their livelihood would be affected.

Mr Mundimba noted that Chisosokone market is too small to accommodate all the vendors and the government should have engaged the people before chasing them from the streets.

Kalumba  Musonda said what happened was not a good move because the area they were trading from was given by the council.

“We thought they would not remove us,” Musonda said.

Jeff Mutale, a trade said he cannot go against the government’s decision to remove them from the street and only appealed for a better trading place to be allocated to them.

Ms. Nalumango observed that with the advancement in technology, especially in the agriculture sector, the country will improve its food production.

She further commended the exhibitors for interpreting the theme well through their products and services.

The Vice President added that the government will continue supporting farmers so that they can excel in their businesses and therefore spur economic development in the country.

Ms Nalumango further thanked the private sector for complementing the government’s agenda in driving the country’s development.

“I have toured about 7 stands and I must say that I am happy with what I have seen. This is what this government has been advocating for, where players such as the private sector should come on board and help in developing the country.” Ms Nalumango stated.

Cry my beloved Pedro

5

Pedro is only 13, and yet he’s already a bread winner for his family. He qualifies to pass as one of those we refer to as Street Kids. The only difference though is that Pedro isn’t a child of the streets. He is a child on the street which simply means he’s only available on the streets in the morning, and goes back home to be with his dear family in the evening.

In what may leave many with jaws dropping, his mom is only 37 years old and yet she has 8 children! Pedro’s parents must have been in a hurry to fulfill what is written in the scriptures, “Go ye and fill up the earth…..” The family of 3 boys and 5 girls is merely separated by 1 or 2 year age difference; one of them a breastfeeding baby!

Before moving to what is euphemistically referred to as the “Big House,” Pedro and his family lived somewhere else with their father, a carpenter by trade. One fateful morning, he gave a bit of money to their mother for food and left home for some odd jobs as he normally did. That was the last time they were ever to see him!

Once they were in 3 months rental arrears, the landlord threw them out and confiscated their entire property. That’s how they ended up at the “Big House” where they now have to cuddle and endure long nights on the cold floor covered by a thin layer of sheets.

Except for his eldest sister, Patricia, who has since eloped with a sugar daddy in another part of town, Pedro and his family share space in one of the rooms which is as small as a toilet in the “Big House” in Mulenga, a sprawling shanty compound out of the city of Kitwe in mineral rich Zambia’s Copperbelt province. Well…..this is nothing but the outcome of amateurish and shambolic architectural work partitioned into smaller rooms to accommodate 25 tenants altogether!

Since they have to share one communal pit latrine, you’ll often see queues as desperate folks wait for their turn to relieve themselves. Obviously unable to withstand the pressure much longer, kids end up squatting behind the pit latrine although some of the adults are equally guilty of defying the laws of nature by resorting to ‘Stone Age’ methods of answering the call of nature; well…….under the cover of the blanket of darkness, of course! They don’t have to bother that much though about excrement being dotted here and there as stray dogs that seemed to be aware of the nocturnal activities at the “Big House” would surely come and do the needful.

The Big House is a complete mosaic of the squalor and poverty you expect to encounter in any given shanty compound you may think of. It’s characterised by heaps of decaying garbage, overgrown grass, cardboards for windows while the walls are smeared with dirt and oily substances. Excrement seeps from the overflowing pit latrine and commingles with leaking water from a burst pipe. Toddlers could be seen scooping water from the improvised drainage and use it to soften the clay soil which they use to fashion out toys…….baby dolls and cars, oblivious of the overpowering stench and the risk of possible infection.

During the day, they’ve to grapple with an endless flow of flies annoyingly whizzing around in their quest to lick the sweat of unwilling individuals! It even gets worse at night as they’ve to contend with all manner of bugs…..if it’s not rats that seem to be in contetion with cockroaches scurrying around the place nibbling this and that, it’s bed bugs stinging them as mosquitos equally claim their fair of blood.

Pedro’s mother isn’t that well. She claims her husband left her with a disease which she refuses to disclose. Her body is frail while her skin complexion is pale. Unfortunately, she has been sapped of energy to engage in strenuous activities.

As his peers can be seen excitedly flocking to school, he picks up his sack and heads into the opposite direction – to the dump sites to scavenge for scrap material such as empty cans or plastic bottles. As the day wears off, he happily heads back home and declares whatever he has raised to his mother. Even if it’s not a fortune, at least it’s enough to get them enough food for the day…….talk about hand to mouth!

Pedro has to go to the dump sites every other day save Sundays when they have to go to church and get comforted by soothing messages from the pastor – a bespectacled diminutive man with the ability to peep into the future.

“No situation is permanent!” he reminds them every Sunday. “Pain may endure for some time, but joy comes in the morning. I see your breakthrough coming soon!”

In the meantime, years come and go, and yet their condition remains the same if not getting worse.
