mazabuka-accident-trucks
Two trucks have been burnt to ashes after they collided at Nega Nega turn off in Chikankata district of Southern province yesterday morning.

Acting Chikankata District Commissioner Trevor Kayanda who rushed to the accident scene confirmed the development to ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka yesterday.

Mr. Kayanda said the truck which was coming from Mazabuka carrying some machinery collided and caught fire on the spot with the other truck which was coming from Lusaka carrying cotton.

He said efforts to put off the fire failed as Chikankata district has no fire tender while efforts to call for a fire tender from the nearby Mazabuka and Kafue districts all proved futile.

Mr. Kayanda said the fire tender only managed to come from Lusaka but it was too late to recover any property.

And Mr. Kayanda could however not confirm of any deaths during the accident but said according to the onlookers, the driver of the truck which was carrying some machinery managed to escape.

But efforts by ZANIS to get a comment from the Zamia Police Service Acting Spokesperson Esther Katongo on the matter failed as her mobile phone was off.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kayanda said there is need to urgently procure a fire tender for the newly created Chikankata district in view of the accident which happened this morning.

Black Wednesday for Mighty and Mufulira Blackpool

0

It was a dark Wednesday for Mufulira’s two legacy clubs who both suffered defeats in their critical battle for survival in the 2016 FAZ Super Division.

Zambia’s second most successful club ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers and its poorer archrival Mufulira Blackpool are both in the bottom four relegation zone and lost in their respective FAZ Super Division Week 27 games on Wednesday.

At Independence Stadium in Lusaka, Wanderers took a serious hit when they lost 4-1 away at Green Buffaloes.

Wanderers made a false start when Joseph Kasongo put them ahead in the 12th minute.

But Buffaloes then struck back to take a 2-1 halftime lead when Allan Mukuka replied with a brace in the 25th and 38th minutes.

Brian Mwila made it 3-1 in the 72nd minute before Happy Kaunda cemented the three points in stoppage time.

Buffaloes rise to 4th place on 45 points from 27 games to exchanging places with defending champions Zesco United who have 43 points from 20 matches with seven fixtures in hand.

Buffaloes are now 16 points behind leaders Zanaco with seven games left before the 2016 season comes to a close.

However, Wanderers stand still in the top part of the bottom four relegation zone on 27 points from as many games played.

And at John Kachofa Stadium in Mufulira, winless and last placed Blackpool lost 2-0 against Forest Rangers.

Goals from Felix Nyaende and Logic Chingandu in the 10th and 44th minutes respectively handed Forest the win and lifted them five places up the table to 8th place on 33 points.

Blackpool sadly look like they are hurtling to a historic first as the first Zambian club to go through a season without a win.

They are also in contention to break their 1999 record when they went down with just one league win.

Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has received four new diesel-electric mainline locomotives and 18 new passenger coaches valued at US$22.4 million.
The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is in need of urgent capital injection of about US$250 million and US$1.2 billion of investments in the short and long term respectively.

TAZARA Managing Director Bruno Ching’andu has since called on private investors to tap into the US$1.2billion investment gap in order to revive the railway firm.

Mr. Ching’andu said that the struggling firm needs an urgent capital injection for among many projects, the rehabilitation of the railway line and equipment.

ZANIS reports that the TAZARA Managing Director was speaking when he made a presentation to the 7th 2016 East and Central Africa Roads and Rail Summit in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

And Mr. Ching’andu assured the summit that the two shareholding governments of Zambia and Tanzania were in the process of revising the TAZARA Act in order to make the company more commercially viable and attractive to private players.

He also disclosed that TAZARA is taking measures to reclaim the market share of the available cargo destined to or originating from Malawi, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, cargo that was directly captive to TAZARA.

Mr. Ching’andu reaffirmed that TAZARA’s most desired goal was to make meaningful contributions to the development of the economies of Tanzania and Zambia.

Government has today started dispatching 48,000 metric tonnes (MT) of relief food to Malawi and Zimbabwe as part of the U$D2.4 billion Southern African Development Community (SADC) humanitarian appeal for ‘hunger stricken’ countries.

Officially flagging off the GRZ/WFP Humanitarian Relief SADC Operation at the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depot in Lusaka today, Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) National Co-ordinator Patrick Kangwa said Zambia being part of the global community is mandated to render support to its neighbouring countries that are in need.

Mr. Kangwa disclosed President Edgar Lungu has allowed the exportation of maize as part of Zambia’s contribution to the affected countries.

He said government has put in place the Humanitarian Logistic Committee to resolve operations that impede the movement of maize into and out of Zambia.

“Government of Zambia shall continue to assist in any way possible to mitigate the sufferings of our brothers and sisters in the region affected by dry spells and drought,” said Kangwa.

ZANIS reports that the DMMU National Co-ordinator assured that government has got enough maize stocks for local consumption and has since advised the public not to panic.

He commended the international donors and cooperating partners for partnering with government in rendering support to Malawi and Zimbabwe.

And speaking at the same occasion, United Nations World Food Programme Country Director Simon Cammelbeeck disclosed that the agency was spending US$250,000 to transport one-tonne of the grain.

Mr. Cammelbeeck further disclosed that US, Sweden, Netherlands and the Internal Monetary Fund (IMF0 are among the donors that have rendered support the SADC humanitarian appeal.

He said his organization and government has engaged Transporters association of Zimbabwe as well as J and J to haul the maize from Zambia.

An estimated 40 million people are in dire need of humanitarian assistance in Southern Africa among them neighbouring Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

SADC has developed a regional transportation plan whose major goal is to streamline and facilitate the processing of relief consignments meant for countries within the region.

The humanitarian assistance has been brought about due to severe el-nino induced worst drought and prolonged dry spell affecting the SADC region in 35 years.

ZAMBEEF JOINS VETS IN BID TO HELP CURB RABIES

Zambeef Products has joined the Veterinary Association of Zambia (VAZ) in raising awareness on the prevention and treatment of rabies, in support of World Rabies Day on September 28, 2016.
“Rabies is a serious condition that affects the nervous system and can lead to loss of life if left untreated,” said Zambeef marketing and corporate affairs manager Felix Lupindula. “The good news is that this can be prevented, and early treatment is vital to saving lives. That is why as a useful and effective corporate member of the community, Zambeef has partnered with VAZ to enable the message to be heard by the communities that need to hear it.”
Rabies is transmitted via bites and scratches from infected animals and can also be passed on by people already infected. Early treatment with the rabies vaccine is the only way to prevent the onset of the disease. If left untreated, rabies will invariably lead to death. An infected person or suspected case must be brought medical attention immediately so they can be treated with the rabies vaccine at the earliest opportunity. Incubation periods for rabies can range from one week to three months or even longer.
Animals such as cats, bats, and rabbits are common carriers, with dogs topping the list of transmitters. Vaccinating pets against the disease beforehand can go a long way in preventing outbreaks or infections.
“We are pleased to announce that 22 clinics nationwide have so far signed up with us in campaigning for better rabies control and dog-bite prevention. Zambeef has come on board as the main sponsor for this year’s campaigns and we intend to put this to good use as we seek to ‘educate, vaccinate, and eliminate’ rabies countrywide,” said Veterinary Association of Zambia spokeswoman Dr Amy Kingdom.
The association will look to engage communities in the areas signed up to the scheme by working with the different clinics in organising localised campaigns.
“Children are the most vulnerable targets in many cases and it is important to teach them to avoid stray dogs and wild animals,” added Mr Lupindula. “We hope that at the end of the campaign, more people will be educated on the proper care of pets and how to make the home and neighbourhoods safer for everyone. Above all, everyone needs to know how to handle suspicious cases or an outbreak, should they occur.”
