Buffaloes stun Nkana

1

Nkana’s aspirations to win the 2016 FAZ Super Division title suffered a major set back when they succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of visiting Green Buffaloes on Saturday.

Forward Jasper Masialeti scored the goal that helped Buffaloes condemn Nkana to their first defeat in nine matches.

Masialeti put the ball behind the net on 37 minutes after beating keeper Kelvin Malunga with a close range shot.

Nkana have themselves to blame for missing uncountable chances in both halves with striker Walter Bwalya being the main culprit.

Bwalya sent his 3rd minute shot wide in front of an empty net after keeper Davy Kaumbw.a had advanced forward

Bwalya further missed scoring opportunities in the 5th and 9th minutes before directing his 70th minute shot at Kaumbwa.

This win is a relief to Buffaloes who lost two straight games ahead of their trip to Wusakile.

Meanwhile, Nkana remain stuck in second place with 53 points from 27 games played.

Government says it will soon implement stable and predictable economic policies that will assist the mining sector to remain viable and help attain economic recovery.

Finance Minister Felix Mutati said there is need for the country to have stable policies that will help it achieve its macro-economic plans that will in turn steer the long term development plans.

‘’The long term outlook for the mining sector is positive. There is still hope in the mining industry. Stability in the mining industry and the policy will drive the long term positive outlook for the sector. ’’ Mr Mutati said.

ZANIS reports that the Finance Minister was speaking during an engagement with the chamber of mines in Kitwe today.

Mr Mutati said to solve the economic challenges the mining sector is facing there is need for government and the mining firms to collaborate to achieve macro stability.

The Minister observed that holding quarterly meetings with the mining sector will help evaluate the sectors performance and avoid shocks.

Mr Mutati said during the quarterly meetings, government will ensure to promote dialogue, transparency, and innovation and set clear bench marks to help the country benefit from the sector.

‘’Let us put our figures on the table. We should not have two parallel balance sheets but one balance sheet that will help our people. If we don’t dialogue it will led to suspension making the Zambian people doubtful’’ he said.

Meanwhile Chamber of Mines President Nathan Chishimba said over 13 billion US dollars has been invested in the mining industry in the past fifteen years by various players.

Mr Chishimba pointed out that that huge investments were injected in Luwana, Konkola, Kalumbila, Kansanshi, Mopani Copper Mines and Lubambe mines.

Mr Chishimba is optimistic that the future of the mining industry is bright because the country currently holds one point two metric tonnes of copper ore in its reserves.

Mutati MMD Faction warns Nevers Mumba

Mutati MMD Faction National Youth Chairperson Dauzen Tembo has warned former party President Nevers Mumba to stop entertaining any thoughts hiring some desperate youths to come and attack the party Secretariat because he will not like what they will do to him.

Mr Tembo said he is aware that Dr Mumba has been holding meetings and making phone calls with some of the former leaders of the party and have been planning to hire thugs to attack the Secretariat but that he should not go ahead with the plans because MMD youths will react in a manner that he has never seen before.

He said the youths will not fight the fellow youths but will follow him to his residence and sort him out as he is the source of the conflicts that led to the conflicts which were faced in the party, and our party is now at peace and is growing in strength.

He said it is unfortunate that a pastor has continued to propagate violence when he is supposed to be in the forefront preaching peace like President Lungu especially at time like this when the nation is going through a healing process after the violence witnessed during the just ended general election.

He said the party is aware of all the plans and that the sooner he abandons the plans the better it will be for him and everyone.

“You the media must tell Nevers Mumba that we are not fools like him, we are always one step ahead and we know way before they execute anything. I am sure you the media recall we had a copy of his contract of memorandum with UPND way before he even signed it.

“He thinks everyone surrounding him is with him when in fact they are always here at secretariat reporting his clandestine moves and pleading with our National Secretary for re-entry into the party. He must think again, we have all the paper trail and are ready for him and his minions. We have exhibited alot of patience and maturity with his unbecoming behaviour and he must thank God for our leader Felix Mutati who has restrained us from vindictiveness,” he said.

Mr Tembo further described Dr Mumba as a joker who is playing with fire.

“These jokers like Mumba are playing with fire, they honestly think this vibrant youth whose Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Kampyongo will allow lawlessness in the country, they must think again. They know him too well.”

“I warn you in advance Nevers Mumba try throw your tiny little punches and the law will catch up with you and your minions in its fullest extent, mind you these guys can’t even afford lawyers and they are tempting us. This is time for us as a nation to heal, if he doesn’t want to heal let him retire to his tiny little hiding place and reflect on his life and the future because Zambia needs us all,” he said.

UPND should consider going to a convention-Mangani

THE challenges which the United Party for National Development (UPND) is currently going through including the bickering between the vice-president for administration Mr Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba and vice-president for politics Dr Canisius Banda can only be resolved by going for a national convention, Former Home Affairs Minister Lameck Mangani has charged.

And Mr Mangani has told the Daily Nation that the fight between Mr Mwamba and Dr Banda was expected following the August 11, 2016 political tsunami.

Mr Mangani said the UPND should also consider revisiting their own programmes as a political party and ascertain where they could have gone wrong during the August 11, 2016 general election campaigns.
Mr Mangani said the UPND should go back to the drawing board rather than “crying over spilt milk” by going to all the courts.

“They should consider going to a convention. They should also reflect on the newcomers that they hurriedly brought into their party. What contribution did they make on this election?

“My brother Nevers Mumba came to UPND immediately after being disappointed because of failure to run his own political party which was MMD but hurriedly joined the UPND and become a focal point, what effect did he have?” he asked.

Mr Mangani said even the people who left PF because they were not happy in one way or the other with President Lungu could have contributed to their loss.

He said some of the people who joined the UPND left the PF because they were against the leadership of President Lungu.

“These were some of the issues that the UPND needed to reflect on and see how they can reposition in order to move towards 2021. “They should never think 2021 is too far because in politics it is never too far. What is important is for them to see where they were having serious challenges and work on them. It takes time to work on the mistakes which politicians make,” he said.

Zambia in need of statesmen-YALI

YALI President Andrew Ntewewe
YALI President Andrew Ntewewe
ZAMBIA in dire need of veteran politicians who will act as statesmen and provide solutions when the country is going through challenges, the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has said.

Yali President Andrew Ntewewe told the Daily Nation yesterday that veteran politicians in the country did not inspire the young because they have diverted from their role of providing solutions the country and had become political stooges who had taken politics as a means of survival.

Mr. Ntewewe said it was sad that instead of playing their role as statesmen to provide guidance and counsel on national matters, the veteran politicians had become the architects of division in the county by taking compromised partisan stances which did not benefit the majority Zambians in any way.

He said the propensity by veteran politicians to making themselves relevant to politics even when most of them had outlived their usefulness was appalling, adding that the lack of exit mechanism was hindering the young people from taking up leadership roles as it was difficult for them to break into the systems which seemed to be a preserve for those who have been in politics for a long time.

He said it was unfortunate that even after serving in different governments since independence, some politicians were not willing to let go of their influence in the political arena without realising the detrimental effect of their decisions on the youths and the country’s development.

“The biggest challenge we have in Zambia is that once people join politics, it is like there is no other vocation they can do and would rather cling to politics and this is why we see a situation where even when some have served under all the governments since independence, they still want to make themselves relevant by taking partisan stances, thereby dividing the country instead of living like statesmen that we have known.

“This is because we do not seem to have a proper exit mechanism where those who have been in power for a long time assume the role of advisors and counsellors on national affairs, thereby allowing the young people to enter politics but because of this lack of exit mechanism, young people have been hindered from taking their position because their entry mechanism has been curated,” Mr. Ntewewe said.

He said most veteran politicians in Zambia had failed to live up to the expectations of the people because they could not find other means of helping the country other than engaging in politics.

“We need people like Kenneth Kaunda who has become a champion in the fight against HIV/AIDS not people who always finding their way into politics and we think the new ministry of National Guidance and Religious Education can help a lot in devising means of helping our former politicians to contribute to this country through charity work.

First lady Esther Lungu has said the fight against cancer related diseases needs concerted efforts from all stakeholders

And Zambia has been recognised by the Pink Ribbon, Red Ribbon campaign as one of the first countries that is making strides in fighting cancer related diseases.

Pink Ribbon, Red Ribbon campaign Chief Executive Officer Celina Schocken said this during a bilateral meeting with First Lady Esther Lungu and the George W. Bush Institute Deputy Director for women’s initiatives Natalie Platts in New York yesterday.

ZANIS reports that the meeting was aimed at discussing further partnerships in the fight against cancer.

Mrs Lungu said people in rural areas in Zambia are more susceptible to the disease because they shun getting help from health institutions due to ignorance.

She said her passion was to see that women and girls lead decent lives especially those in rural areas.

Mrs Lungu has since appealed to stakeholders to champion cancer control and prevention.

She said she is willing to follow the footsteps of former first lady Christine Kaseba in her efforts of fighting cancer in women.

Meanwhile, Ms Schocken said Zambia is a shining example and has become the first African country to record progress in the fight against cancer

Approximately 86 percent of all cervical cancer cases occur in developing countries and about 50, 000 women in Zambia are screened each year for cancer.

Ms Schocken said the fight against cancer in Zambia is an example of the good leadership the country has.

She has since commended government for the good work it was doing to reduce cases of cancer.

Ms Schocken however challenged stakeholders to work at increasing the number of women being screened from 50,000 to 180, 000 annually.

She said there was also need to create awareness to fight stigma and myths as people have misconceptions about cancer diseases

And Senior Private Secretary in the first Lady’s office Florence Chawelwa said Zambia was proud with the continuity that has existed with present and past first ladies in championing national programmes.

She said the office of the first lady will be used as a platform in championing the control and prevention of cancer especially among women and girls in rural areas.

The Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon campaign was launched in Zambia in September 2011 by the George W. Bush institute and the United states government under the U.S President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR), Susan Komen and the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)

HH should be cited for contempt of court-Kamba

President Edgar Lungu greets former Lusaka Province Minister Obvious Mwaliteta during his visit of Lusaka Central Prison
IT is contempt of Court for United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema to demand for the release of his supporters who are facing a serious case of aggravated robbery, Patriotic Front Lusaka Province (PF) youth chairperson Kennedy Kamba has charged.

Speaking after visiting former Kafue Member of Parliament Obvious Mwaliteta and other UPND officials who incarcerated at Chimbokaila prison yesterday, Mr. Hichilema demanded for their release, saying they were not criminals but citizens who were fighting for their rights.

Mr. Hichilema said his party would never give up but would continue to fight for its freedom and described the incarcerated Officials as “political prisoners” and that the party had gone to encourage them to remain strong because their freedoms would be secured soon. But Mr. Kamba said Mr. Hichilema’s demand amounted to contempt of the court because there was no one else with the mandate to decide cases apart from the courts of law and that his statement was aimed at intimidating the judiciary and should not be tolerated.

He said it was important for politicians to realise that they were not above the law and that any manoeuvres to influence the outcome of the cases before the courts of law should be treated as prejudicial and that those who were at the helm of making unwarranted statements against the judiciary should be cited for contempt.

He accused Mr. Hichilema of not having respect for the judiciary as he had repeatedly spoken ill of the judges in matters he wanted to have an upper hand in order to influence them to make decisions which were in his favour.

“Mr. Hichilema should be cited for contempt of court because he knows so well that the cases of his members who have been arrested are still in court and are yet to be concluded but he has continued to make running commentaries on them with reckless disregard of the law because he has no power to demand for the release of anyone.

“As PF youths in Lusaka, we will not accept any intimidation of the judges, prison warders, or police officers because these are just discharging their duties according to the law and so, no one should drag them in their personal battles and we will not accept any manipulation of the outcome of cases in court because we respect the rule of law and we have respect for and confidence in the judiciary in this country,” Mr. Kamba said.

Mr. Mwaliteta is one of the UPND officials who were arrested during the election period and charged with a non-bailable offence of aggravated robbery after they impounded a vehicle belonging to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on suspicion of carrying pre-marked ballot papers aimed at rigging the election.

First Quantum Minerals Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman Phillip Pascal said the company has continued its commitment to Zambia as shown by the organization’s promotion of commerce and trade.

And Country Director Tarmer Kirolos said his organisation believes that every child deserves the best chance for a bright future, hence its unequivocal commitment to ensuring children not only survive but also strive.

This is according to a statement made available to ZANIS by Special Assistant to the President, Press and Public Relations Amos Chanda.

Government is not aware of missing examination papers

11

Government is investigating allegations that grade nine examination papers destined for North-western Province have gone missing.

Ministry of General Education Permanent Secretary Henry Tukombe said that the ministry is investigating the matter with relevant authorities on the Copperbelt.

Mr Tukombe charged that the ministry was not yet aware of the information pertaining to the missing examination papers, as is being circulated on social media.

He further urged the general public to remain calm while the relevant authority looks into the matter.

He was speaking to journalist during a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday.

This week, some Grade 9 examination question papers that were destined for Solwezi went missing in Chingola.

The papers were being ferried in a containerized vehicle to Solwezi for the November 2016 junior secondary examinations.

Copperbelt Police Chief Charity Katanga confirmed the development saying the criminals broke into the vehicle while in motion at the place called Mushishima in Chingola and stole the carton boxes.

She said the area were the incident occurred had a lot of pot holes which gave the thieves ample time to break into the containers.

“When vehicles slow down thieves jump on the trucks and steal the goods. This is the same point at which the Grade 9 English exams question papers were stolen from.

“A pass by found one carton box sealed and five packs were opened. So far we have not ascertained the number of carton boxes that were stolen because they were destined for Solwezi. The Education Council of Zambia officers from Lusaka have already come in Chingola with a view to ascertain the stolen papers. They want to know how many were received in Solwezi and compare with what was dispatched,” she said.

She further explained that the criminals thought it was food that was in the containerized vehicle thereby breaking into it.

She has since said that investigations into the matter had since been instituted.

Source at DABS office in Chingola said the people transporting the Grade 9 exams question papers ignored given instructions not to move at night for security reasons.

Dr Canisius Banda should clear speculations about his dark corner meetings with PF-UPND Women

UPND vice president Dr Canisius Banda

The suspicion over alleged impending defection of UPND Vice President for Politics have continued manifesting in the opposition party with the Lusaka Province women having challenged the leader to come out in the open.

Rose Zulu the Party Provincial Chairperson says Dr Canisius Banda should come out in the open and tell the membership whether he is still part of UPND or not.

Ms Zulu rumours that their Vice President is holding dark corner meetings with the ruling PF should be addressed and buried once and for all.

She said if Dr Banda can not address the rumors then he should go on a break so that he reflects on his future in the Party.

“With due respect to our Vice President for Politics Dr Canisius Banda, we as women demand that he comes out in the open and tells us whether he is still our member or he is under pressure from the Patriotic Front to join them.

“There is no way we can be subjected to stories of our Vice President holding dark corner meetings with Patriotic Front officials and secretly visiting State House , he is our Vice President for Politics for God’s sake and not an ordinary member let him come out in the open and address us as women now. If he cannot make a decision then we advise him to go on a break and look at which way to go unlike the current situation where most members look at him with suspicion,” she said.

“Dr Canisius Banda is an intellectual and its unlike him to get intangled in issues of defections, such issues are common and most acceptable among young cadres and those seeking to feed their bellies.

She also accused the PF of lacking credible leaders hence their move to have their Vice President intangled in issues of defections.

“Dr Canisius Banda is an intellectual and its unlike him to get intangled in issues of defections, such issues are common and most acceptable among young cadres and those seeking to feed their bellies.

“However we are aware that PF are short of credible leaders hence hunting down our Vice President so that he takes up a professional and technical role. UPND is a democratic Party with ideals and if one feels they no longer believe in the ideals they are free to leave,” he said.

She added “Zambia needs UPND because this is the only party whose leadership has a vision and technical know how of fixing the economy and making life better for all. President Hakainde Hichilema and his running mate have demonstrated in their private lives that they can make life better for all .

“All we want as women in the party is to stop all speculations about our Vice President moving to the Patriotic Front by him addressing us or the nation on his position and that should be done now. We love you Dr Banda remember where there is love there is pain, even our God is jealous and so are we.”

Aggrey Chiyangi has bounced back on the Zambia coach.

Wedson Nyirenda has picked the his ex-Power Dynamos team mate and fellow 1991 CAF Cup Winners Cup gold medal winner as his first assistant.

The Nkana coach was axed from the Zambia fold after the team failed to qualify to the 2016 Cosafa Cup semifinals in Namibia in June.

Kampamba Chintu will revert to second assistant after serving in the assistant role during George Lwandamina’s final game in charge on September 4 in a 2017 Africa Cup Group E qualifier against Kenya that ended 1-1 in Ndola.

Meanwhile, 24 Zambia home-based players go into camp on September 25 in Ndola for preliminary week of their 2018 World Cup Group B qualifying home match against Nigeria on October 9.

The match is expected to be Nyirenda’s debut competitive game.

Zesco feeling no pressure ahead of semifinal D-Day

4

Zesco United’s Nigerian defender Ayo Oluwafemi says the pressure is on the hosts Mamelodi Sundowns in Saturday’s’ 2016 CAF Champions League semifinal final leg in Pretoria.

Zesco beat Sundowns 2-1 in the first leg on September 17 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

A draw will suffice for Zesco but Sundowns need a win to end the visitors hopes of a debut Champions League final appearence.

“Our main aim is to go to the final so we just have to get the desired result so that we get to the final,” Oluwafemi said.

“Sundowns should have more pressure than us because they are playing in front of their home crowd and they need to score a goal.

“They came here and they scored and it is also possible for us to also score in Pretoria.”

Meanwhile, Zesco have a big boost heading into the final leg with the return from suspension of playmaker Clatous Chama to give the visitors that extra spark in midfield that was missing in the first leg.
