Don’t underrate us-Kennedy Mweene

12

Chipolopolo goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene has warned that Zambia should not be underrated by their Group B rivals in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Zambia will tackle Algeria, Nigeria and Cameroon in the World Cup qualifiers.

Mweene saids being rated as underdogs in Group B will motivate Chipolopolo.

“We are in a tricky group but Zambia performs well when a lot of people have written them off. Even the teams we will be playing against like Nigeria and Algeria know that it won’t be easy to beat Zambia,” Mweene said.

Zambia faces Nigeria in the group opener on October 9 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

“We have accepted that tag of being underdogs. Being considered underdogs we would like to prove many people wrong. Knowing the way Zambia plays we will be equal to the task,” the Mamelodi Sundowns keeper said.

Mweene added:” Despite being underdogs it won’t be easy to beat Zambia.”

Zambia advanced to the final stage of the Russia World Cup qualifiers after eliminating Sudan over two legs last year.

In The Kitchen With kanta :Sweet and Sticky Pork

sweet-pork

This is one of my absolute favourite recipes.  I love sweet and sour food in general, but this sweet and sticky pork recipe is amazing.  It’s quick and easy to make; perfect if you want to make something a bit different for you and your family.

Cooking & Prep: 30 mins

Serves: 4

Ingredients

  • 150g dried long grain rice
  • 350g pork tenderloin, cut into 8-12 pieces
  • 4 tbsps soy sauce
  • 2 tbsps honey
  • 1 ½ tsps grated fresh ginger
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • ½ tsp chilli flakes
  • Vegetable oil

Optional

  • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped or sliced
  • 150g of peas or sugar snap peas

Method

Boil a pot of water, add the rice and cook it for about 10 minutes, or follow the instructions on the packet

Whilst the rice cooks, lay your pork pieces flat on a chopping board and cover them with cling film.  Bash each piece with a rolling pin, until they are about 1 cm thick.

In a bowl mix together the soy sauce, honey, ginger, garlic and chilli.  Dip each piece of pork into the marinade, and mix well.  Heat 2-3 tbsps of oil in a pan, and fry the pork for a few minutes before turning it over and cooking the other side.   Do this in batches if your pan is not big enough.  Fry until each piece is cooked through (white on the inside).

Pour the rest of the marinade into the pan to cook it a little, 1 minute.

Add some veggies to make this meal healthier. Boil a small pot of water, add the carrots and cook for 3 minutes, then add the peas and cook them for a further 2 minutes.

Serving

Plate up your rice with the sticky pork over it, pour over the remaining sauce, and add your carrots and peas on the side.

You can also try this with chicken or turkey if you do not eat pork.

Concerted efforts needed to address the poor reading culture in Zambia

THE Livingstone City Council has called for concerted efforts to address the problem of a poor reading culture in the country.

Livingstone City Council Public Relations Manager Emmanuel Sikanyika noted that most people in Zambia had a poor reading culture and called for collective efforts from various stakeholders to address the problem.

Mr Sikanyika cited the Livingstone City Council Library, Livingstone Museum and Railway Museum as some of the important places that had vast literature in Zambia’s Tourist Capital but they were rarely visited.

He was speaking in Livingstone on Sunday afternoon when he launched three books written by a group of Zambian writers.

The books, which were launched by Lilato Publishers and Production in partnership with the Livingstone Press Club and Musitunya Literacy Theatre, are ‘Is This Real Love’ by Munyinda Nambula as well as ‘Crashed Hopes Revived’ by Musialike Kufanga Nasilele and ‘Keron’s Poetry Book’ by Keron Lubinda.

“It is sadly said that the best way to hide something in Zambia is by putting it inside a book and that item won’t be noticed.

“It will be difficult to have well-informed and articulate citizens when such people don’t take time to read,” Mr Sikanyika said.

He urged all Livingstone residents and Zambians at large to embrace a good culture of reading to enhance education and development in the country.

Mr Sikanyika further urged young people to avoid engaging in immoral activities and concentrate on their education to assure them of a better future.

“Our young people today are faced with many challenges of teenage pregnancies, early marriages, clubbing, smoking as well as drug and alcohol abuse among others which are negatively affecting their education and other future prospects.

“It is worrying these days to have a lot of child-headed homes which are unable to sustain themselves,” Mr Sikanyika said.

And Mr Munyinda, who started writing books in 2013, urged more young people to write more books to document their progressive ideas.

“Writing has been very cardinal to me over the last few years because I have always wanted to write books that talk about real life issues,” Mr Nambula said.

Musitunya Literacy Club patron Teddy Mulenga urged the media to expose many Zambian writers to encourage more locals to write books.

Dr Mulenga, who is also a writer and a retired medical doctor, noted that most Zambian writers were not promoted in the media.

In their presentation during the launch, the Livingstone Press Club urged writers to uphold media ethics in their writing as irresponsible writing could cause harm to society.

The Club challenged writers to take time to understand various national laws that works against the Freedom of Expression and Freedom of the Media to avoid publishing defamatory and corrupt information.

CCPC sensitizes Chisunka Chiefdom on their consumer rights and obligations.

Competition and Consumer Protection Commission
Competition and Consumer Protection Commission

Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has called on consumers of various products and services in Chief Chisunka’s Chiefdom of the Ushi people of Luapula Province in Mansa District to know their rights and obligations for them to always get value for their money and a fair dealing at every transaction.

CCPC Luapula Province Investigator Mwate Mulenga made the call in Chief Chisunka’s Chiefdom during a sensitization meeting with the villagers in the Chiefdom.

She said it is a right of every consumer to get a fair deal in every transaction as they spend their hard earned money on any product or service.

Mrs Mulenga called on the consumers to ensure that whenever they buy products which are defective and malfunctioning, they have a right to take the defective products back to the seller for either an exchange for the one working properly or a refund.

She also sensitized the villagers to report their complaints on defective products and unfair treatment from sellers of various products and service providers to the Commission for redress on a toll free number 5678 for help.

She added that those who can manage should report their cases in person to the Commission Officers based at NAPSA building in Mansa, the provincial capital.

And Commission representative Masautso Phiri added that cases of defective products and unregistered insurance through agents were rife and frequently reported to the CCPC offices for redress.

Mr. Phiri said following the increased awareness campaigns mounted by the Commission in the recent past, the efforts have resulted in appreciable reduction in the occurrences of the cases being reported.

He said even random checks on Shops in Mansa and other Districts countrywide have revealed a drastic reduction in Shop owners stocking expired produced on their shelves which is a good development for the consumers.

Mr. Phiri emphasized that it is important for consumers to develop a good culture of asking for genuine receipts for the products they are buying from established Shops and Retail outlets in order to have a strong case in an event of receiving a defective product from the seller.

He also advised the villagers to ensure that when they are travelling on long distance journeys which could be intercity or inter town to get genuine receipts even for their luggage so that in an event that the luggage goes missing, they would have a written document to show that they paid for the luggage for them to be compensated.

Mr. Phiri further stated that consumers should always check the expiry dates on the products before buying so that they do not buy expired products for health reasons and also as a way of helping the Shop owners not to continue stocking expired products on their shelves.

He said products being sold to the consumers must be sold within the timeframe that does not put the lives and health of consumers at risk for consuming such products because every consumer is entitled to get value for their money.

Mr Phiri said the rights do not just end at foodstuffs but extends to all products and services that consumers spend money on which should meet their expectations.

He thanked the local authorities and the Zambia Bureau of Standards for partnering with the Commission in advancing and enforcing consumer rights and obligations.

The Drug Enforcement Commission has charged and arrested the Zambia National Farmers Union(ZNFU) President and the Union’s Executive Director.

Union President Dr. Evelyn Nguleka and Executive Director Ndambo Ndambo were arrested following audits from KPMG and EMM Corporates.

And ZNFU President Evelyn Nguleka has tendered in her resignation following the developments.
Dr Nguleka has also stepped down as President of the World Farmers’ Organization (WFO).

ZNFU Spokesman Kinsley Kaswende said Dr Nguleka has stepped down in order to prepare for the upcoming court case regarding allegations of misapplication of funds at ZNFU.

“Constitutionally, ZNFU First Vice President Mr Richard Lisimba will act in Dr Nguleka’s capacity. ZNFU will henceforth be restrained to give further comment on the matters, as they will now be before court,” Mr Kaswende said.

She has thanked the government, the farmers and the agricultural industry in Zambia and outside, for the good working relationship she has had with them and that she now looks forward to the full process of the law to take its course.

Dr Nguleka further wished ZNFU well in its future endeavours.

Both Embassies of Finland and Sweden in Lusaka commissioned separate forensic audits that exposed extensive fraud, embezzlement and theft of over K34 million at the farmers institution.

The donors have since with-held further funding and demanded criminal prosecution of the culprits and demanded a refund as the money was from tax payers in their respective countries.

Deputy Head of the Swedish Embassy David Wilkins disclosed that the second audit by KPMG confirmed the high level misappropriation, fraud and theft of their funding to the institutions.

Instead of funds going to farmers, the resources were diverted to unauthorised expenditure of inflated personal allowances, and contracts designed to be vehicles of fraud and theft.

Government wants to construct a new Capital city outside Lusaka

144
Zambia Association Women in Constructions (ZAWIC) President Dorothy Mulwila speaks to Special Assistant for Project and Monitoring to the President Lucky Mulusa at State House when they called on him
National Planning Minister Lucky Mulusa (R)

National Planning Minister Lucky Mulusa has announced that Government is seriously considering creating a new Capital city away from Lusaka.

Addressing a media briefing today, Mr Mulusa said the decision has been necessitated by the massive congestion that currently faces Lusaka.

He said there is need to create another capital city and also relook at how other cities in Zambia are coping with the increase in human and motor vehicle traffic.

Mr Mulusa feared that failure to develop a new city would make it difficult for any business to be conducted in Lusaka.

“Lusaka in its current state has breached its carrying capacity and there is need to create another capital city. In the next 10 to 20 years, it will be difficult to conduct any business in Lusaka due to the massive congestion,” Mr Mulusa said.

Mr Mulusa said the situation has been compounded by the fact that there is no room for further expansion of Lusaka.

“We can’t expand the Great East Road and the way the infrastructure is laid out makes it difficult to even plan for a speed train,” Mr Mulusa stated.

And Mr Mulusa has assured that the project is approved will be implemented through wide consultations with all stakeholders.

He said the Ministry of National Planning will undertake all its activities using a bottom-up approach in order not to impose policies on the people.

“We want to create a sense of ownership among the policy implementers and most important on the beneficiaries,” Mr Mulusa said.

And Mr. Mulusa has thanked Zambians for giving the Patriotic Front (PF) another five year mandate to run the affairs of the country.

Mr. Mulusa also commended President Edgar Lungu for appointing him as a full cabinet Minister and pledged to execute his duties to the best of his ability.

The Minister stated that government is determined to perform to the expectation of Zambians.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mulusa has disclosed that his ministry will soon sign performance based agreements starting from the Permanent Secretary (PS) to cleaners to ensure every one performs.

He warned that employees under his ministry who will underperform risk being relieved of their duties.

President Lungu nominated and subsequently appointed Lucky Mulusa as Minister of National development planning.

Lusaka Province Minister Japhen Mwakalombe says President Edgar Lungu’s administration will continue with its pro-poor policies in a bid to alleviate the suffering of the people.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Mwakalombe explained that government is working tirelessly to address social and economic challenges facing Zambians.

“Let me re-assure you of government’s commitment towards bringing about development across the country and Luangwa District as a whole”, he assured.

The Lusaka Provincial Minister was speaking during the Dantho traditional ceremony of the Chikunda speaking people of Chief Mphuka of Luangwa District over the weekend.

Mr. Mwakalombe pointed out that government has successfully upgraded the D 145 road to bituminous standard which will spur economic development in the district.

He further pointed out that government is on course in connecting Luangwa District to the National Power Grid (NPG) via Rufunsa District in order to service the entire district.

“President Lungu will complete all developmental projects that we embarked on five years ago and we will also embark on new ones aimed at bettering the welfare of Zambians,” he said.

Meanwhile, Independent Feira Member of Parliament Stephen Miti has pledged to work closely with government in order to enhance social and economic development of the area.

Earlier, Chief Mphuka of the Chikunda speaking people of Luangwa District in Lusaka Province implored Zambians to support the re-election of President Edgar Lungu and the PF in order to foster unity and development in the country.

Speaking through a representative, Princess Tamara Malunga-Mwansa, Chief Mphuka said his subjects are happy with the commissioning of Luangwa District Hospital whose phase three has since commenced.

The traditional leader commended government for constructing five (5) health posts in the district which have since brought primary health care services closer to the people.

“We are happy with the construction of female and children’s wards, staff houses and a water reticulation system. The hospital will better the livelihood of the people and create more jobs in the health sector”, said Chief Mphuka.

The traditional leader commended Zambians for remaining peaceful stressing that peace is a prerequisite for national development.

And speaking at the same function, Independent Feira Member of Parliament Stephen Miti pledged to work closely with government in enhancing social and economic development to the area.

Mr. Miti further pledged to work with government in creating employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people in the district.

Visiting Chief Chapoto from Zimbabwe and his Mozambican counterpart, Chief Mtunda attended the ceremony.

Others traditional leaders that addede the ceremony include Senior Chief Mburuma, Chieftainess Shikabeta, Chieftainess Mpanshya and Chieftainess Chiawa among many other dignitaries.

Zambians living in the diaspora have been advised to air their grievances through the Ministry of Foreign affairs and other relevant government institutions if their concerns are to be addressed.

President Lungu gave the advice when he met Zambian nationals living in America during a “Meet the President Meeting” in New York last evening.

The Head of State assured the Zambians in diaspora that his government will treat all Zambian nationals equally regardless of their base.

President Lungu disclosed that his government has provided for a clause for dual citizenship and urged interested citizens to follow up the matter with the ministry of home affairs.

He however cautioned Zambian nationals living abroad to be disciplined and follow the laws of the host countries.

Mr Lungu also advised Zambians to remain united and reflect on some countries that have failed to maintain peace and see for themselves the anguish citizens of such countries are going through.

“Lets remain as united Zambians, you have seen how other countries have been without unity. For those who want to be here for good, I have made it for you through the provision of a clause in the constitution to enable your dual citizenship,” added President Lungu.

President Lungu also dispelled the issue of tribalism and regionalism as vices only promoted by some politicians during campaigns and that tribalism will end when people become united regardless of where they come from.

He however, explained that tribalism does not exist even among political leaders, in social gatherings such as football matches, drinking places and marriages among others.

The President stressed that there is equally no province that is tribal but only certain individuals.

President Lungu further noted that nobody will ascend to the position of republican president on tribal lines and that people can only ascend to the presidency only when they are embraced by the majority across the country.

Earlier, Permanent Representative of Zambian Mission to the United Nations Mwaba Kasese Bota in her congratulatory message to President Lungu’s re- election noted that democracy is a game of numbers as such president Lungu scored the majority hence retaining the presidency.

Dr Bota said her office has a good working relationship with the over 500 Zambians living in the diaspora who are also keen to work with the PF administration to foster development.

And, Zambians in Diaspora Community Chairperson representative Cynthia Chirwa told President Lungu that Zambians in the diaspora have embraced the One Zambia One Nation motto and want peace, unity and development to flourish in Zambia.

Dr. Chirwa also thanked the president for allowing the dual citizenship clause in the constitution as it will help Zambians living abroad participate fully in the national affairs of the country.

Finance Minister Felix Mutati says government will work together with the International Monetary Fund and other cooperating Partners in constructing the country’s economic recovery program.

“I believe that President Lungu’s exceptional leadership talent coupled with the diverse experience of his team, will prescribe invaluable reforms aimed at assisting the country in handling the pressing socio-economic challenges facing our people and shipping them out of the troubled waters of poverty,” said Mr. Mutati.

And British High Commissioner Fergus Cochrane-Dyet has said there is sufficient room for improved engagement between Britain and Zambia. “We are ready to share experiences and help build capacity in order for Zambia to recover from her economic shocks,” he said.

Mr. Cochrane-Dyet made the assurance when he paid a courtesy call on the Minister to congratulate him for his appointment and to introduce the visiting British Department for International Development Chief Economist Professor Stefan Dercon.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Dercon advised that export oriented economic diversification as a way of cushioning Zambia’s legacy dependency on copper revenue inflows is one option that the country could consider.

The Ministry of Finance has embarked on rigorous engagement with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that broad consultation is attained in formulating economic recovery policies which will be announced alongside the 2017 Budget.

As part of the economic recovery consultation process, Mr. Mutati is this week scheduled to meet the Industrial Development Corporation, Bank of Zambia, Bankers Association of Zambia, Zambia Revenue Authority, and the Zambia Chamber of Mines.

IS THE ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT OPTING FOR GUNBOAT DIPLOMACY?

Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda
Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda

By Brig Gen Godfrey Miyanda6

Last night the ZNBC Television reported that the United States Government (US) has endorsed President Edgar Lungu as the legitimately elected President of Zambia. Had it not been for the reported threats allegedly issued by the US Government against Zambian opposition political parties I would have kept quiet. But threats by the Mighty US against the people of Zambia cannot be taken lightly, especially when they arise from the recent “democratic presidential election” which has been challenged in our Zambian Constitutional Court! I DO NOT believe the statement attributed to the US government; I would rather give them the benefit of doubt.

Here is the news item quoting Mr Amos Chanda, President Lungu’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations: “The US Government has endorsed President Edgar Lungu as Zambia’s 6th President. And the US has urged opposition political parties in Zambia to accept defeat in the just ended 11th August general elections. The US Government has stated that President Lungu was legitimately elected after he achieved a 50 percent plus one vote threshold. ZNBC’s Bangwe Naviley reports that the Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations disclosed this after US Under Secretary of State Linda Thomas Greenfield called on President Lungu at Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. The US government has warned that perpetrators of violence will be dealt with under both national and international law.” End of quote.

Under the Zambian Constitution and the Electoral law aggrieved contestants have a right to challenge the outcome of an election. Even without being briefed, with their sophisticated systems of watching everybody, the Americans must surely be aware of this! I urge the US government to confirm whether they issued the statement as alleged or to disown it. I emphasise that it would be impolitic of the US government to keep quiet over this serious allegation of their alleged interference in the internal dispute in Zambia which has NOT been determined conclusively!

As already stated, I do not believe Mr Chanda’s allegations attributed to the US Government, regarding the legitimacy or otherwise of the 11th August presidential election as these are the very issues properly contested but not heard nor determined. The two Zambian citizens (NOT American citizens) did NOT at any time withdraw their petition as was done by Al Gore against George Bush junior of the USA. The practice is that statements of this nature are made either as a Joint Communique signed by the parties involved or separate statements are made by the representatives of each side engaged in a discussion. In this case the Under Secretary of State has NOT been shown speaking, instead it was the Zambian talking on behalf of the US government. In fairness to the US Government, I doubt that the US has taken it upon itself to declare legitimate an election conducted in Zambia when the Constitutional Court of Zambia has not so declared; neither has the said Court expressly declared the status of that petition which they kept alive by adjournment on 3rd September 2016 to continue to be heard by the said Court from 5th September 2016 to 8th September 2016!

Mr Chanda’s statement suggests that the US government is ready to intervene in the election dispute in Zambia. I thought President Lungu travelled to the US to attend the UN Conference with a specific agenda. Has President Lungu requested for help from the US Government? If so what are the grounds for such a request? Has President Lungu reported to the American Government that there is instability in Zambia and that he has failed to contain the situation and hence the request for American assistance? And why the American Government specifically? Why not the Israeli or Chinese governments, for instance?

There must be full disclosure of what is going on. The US Government should confirm the statement by Mr Chanda or disown it. I reserve further comments until then.

Miles Sampa writes to the PF, wants to re-join, says he went astray

UDF leader Miles Sampa has written to President Edgar Lungu asking to re-join the Patriotic Front.

In an open letter, Mr Sampa who left the PF in January 2016 and founded the UDF said he went astray after losing late Michael Sata whom he considered as his mentor and father figure.

Mr Sampa whose last position in the PF government was that of Deputy Commerce Minister said he is now not seeking or expecting any position or appoint in government.
Below is Mr Sampa’s letter.

To: The PF President, PF Secretary General(SG), Members of the Central Committee (MCC) and the PF General membership

REF: Rejoining PF

Today I woke up with deep reflection on my recent past. I realize that I went astray. From the date I lost my mentor and father figure, my actions have been irrational and superseded by emotions. I deeply regret it all and marks as a solid lesson.

Despite effort from some senior officials, there was a counter internal stronger force that led me away from a party which is home to me. I walked away from my bonafide political family and my conscience has not been clear since.

In all my past actions, I did not seek God’s intervention. I have since had divine and spiritual engagement with a number Pastors and other people of God who have helped me see my errors of which I take full responsibility.

As I return to where I belong, I neither seek nor expect any position or appointment. All I ask for is your forgiveness.

I further wish to apologize unreservedly to all that I may have injured directly or indirectly in the past or those that may disagree with my current decision. I only wish to be true to myself and to all.

God Bless All and Sincerely Yours,

Miles Sampa
