Lafarge Lusaka Marathon scheduled for Saturday 30 April 2016 is geared to be a success. The route has been certified by the International Association for Athletics Federation (IAAF) and all the necessary safety measures have been put in place including full road closure for up to 6 hours.

Speaking at the sponsorship cocktail Tuesday evening at Intercontinental Hotel, Lafarge Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Emmanuel Rigaux said Lafarge Zambia would continue to support the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon and hoped it would begin to also be a means to attract tourists into the country.

“Our commitment to the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon is firmer than ever before. We will ensure that together with ZAAA and the rest of our sponsors this event becomes a major highlight in the city’s annual events calendar. We have plans to link the participation in the marathon to tourism. Companies and individuals will choose to tour our national parks, visit the Victoria Falls and do the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon.”

Mr. Rigaux further thanked government and the sponsors for coming on board to make the marathon a success.

Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) president Elias Mpondela said he was happy with the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon because the routes were certified by IAAF which enables all the runners to participate in any international Marathon.

Mr. Mpondela further said that the Lafarge Lusaka marathon was aimed at promoting the City of Lusaka.

Speaking at the same event, Managing Director of Madison General Insurance Mr. Chabala Lumbwe said that his company was happy to associate itself with the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon through the provision of Insurance.

“We have all the confidence in the event and are sure it will be a success. Our job is to cover any risk and I want to assure all the participants of the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon that they are covered as individuals up to K100,000’’, said Mr. Lumbwe.

The Standard Chartered Managing Director Mr. Andrew Okai said that Standard Chartered Bank was happy to partner with Lafarge as the bank was already associated with international Marathons in other parts of the world. He said he would ensure that as many Stanchart employees as possible took part in the event.

The Minister of Sport, Youth and Child Development Hon Vincent Mwale commended Lafarge and ZAAA for coming up with a Marathon which would help raise the status of the city and the country as a whole.

“Government will continue to support sporting events like this one, which have the power to elevate the status of our country and trigger economic activity. I am convinced that with time people across the globe will begin to use the Lafarge Lusaka Marathon as a reference point when talking about Lusaka and Zambia in general”, he said.

The Lafarge Lusaka marathon 2016 is sponsored by Lafarge, Madison General, Reload Logistics, Standard Chartered Bank, FNB, AON, InterContinental Hotel, Brunelli Construction, Levy Shopping Mall, AM Motors, Bri-ozii, Zambian Breweries, H2Zero, AVIC, Lusaka City Council, RTSA, Zambia Police, Zambia Sugar, Green Jobs Programme Zambia, Misty Developers Ltd and New Horizon Printing.

Zesco move to 2nd place, Zanaco wallop Dynamos

Zesco United moved into second place on the FAZ Super Division table after a 2-0 away win over Napsa Stars in a delayed Week 2 fixture at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

A brace from Kenyan striker Jesse Were in the 32nd and 62nd minutes handed Zesco their fourth straight win in as many Super Division games played this season with three matches in hand.

Zesco topple Nakambala Leopards from 2nd place to 3rd only on goal difference on 12 points.

Meanwhile, across town at Sunset Stadium, 2015 runners-up Zanaco made easy work of Lusaka Dynamos whom they crushed 4-0.

Fashion Sakala scored a brace in the 18th and 38th minutes after Charles Zulu had put Zanaco ahead in the 7th minute.

Isaac Chansa scored the third goal in the 34th minute to help Zanaco stay unbeaten in the league from three matches played with another four in hand on maximum 9 points.

Zanaco’s victory also saw them make up for last Tuesday’s exit from the 2016 Confederation Cup when they lost 3-0 away to Stade Gabesien of Tunisia to bow out 4-1 on aggregate.

Ex-Zambia midfielder Linos Makwaza says memories of the 1993 Gabon Air disaster victims are still fresh 23 years after the catastrophe.

Zambia is on Thursday marking the 23rd anniversary of the Gabon disaster that claimed the entire national team that was flying to Senegal for a 1994 World Cup qualifier.

The disaster occurred in the evening of 27 April 1993 when a Zambia Air Force plane carrying the team ditched into the Atlantic Ocean metres offshore from Libreville, Gabon killing all 25 passengers and five crew members.

In an interview in Kitwe, Makwaza who played together with the fallen heroes said marking the Gabon disaster will forever remain significant among Zambians.

“It seems like yesterday and memories of our colleagues are still fresh,” Makwaza said.

“I think what’s more painful is seeing the children of our fallen heroes,” he said.

Makwaza was dropped from the Zambia squad days before the fateful journey.

“The commemoration of the Gabon disaster is very important and it will remain important. Those guys were heroes who died on national duty,” he said.

Makwaza added:” I think we should remember that day and it could have been better to arrange a friendly match for the national team in memory of our heroes.”

PF calls on CBU and UNZA students to stop being used by Political Parties

18
Joyce Nonde-Simukoko
Joyce Nonde-Simukoko

The PF has called on students from the University of Zambia and the Copperbelt University to avoid being used by desperate opposition party leaders.

In a statement the Party’s Chairperson for Labour and Social Security Joyce Nonde Simukoko said students are suppose to be the cream and pride of the nation who should not fall play to selfish politicians who want to use them to achieve their ambitions.

She said students should be mindful of their background as the same politicians who use them have children who do not even go to the same universities but are learning abroad.

Below is a full statement issued to the media by the ruling party.

PATRIOTIC FRONT (PF) CHAIRPERSON FOR LABOUR AND SOCIAL SECURITY OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS KEY TO SOLVING UNEMPLOYMENT IN ZAMBIA

The Patriotic Front Government, through the Ministry of Higher Education, in collaboration with the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) managements, has just reopened both Universities following their closure 3 months ago due to riotous Behaviour by students which led to damage to public and private property.

As PF Chairperson for Labour, I wish to call on students at both universities to avoid being used as tools of destruction by desperate opposition party elements especially in this election year. When intelligent students, the cream and pride of the nation, who are supposed to be focusing on their education, are manipulated and used as instruments of destruction by politicians to achieve their selfish political ambitions, the result will be more closures of the universities leading to delays in students completing their studies.

What UNZA and CBU students must realize is that those politicians encouraging them to conduct riotous behaviour have children who are studying in private universities or abroad, so they don’t mind the damage and closures.

Students must realize that time wasted due to delays in their graduation is never recovered, and working life is very short. It is an opportunity cost which should have been wisely used by these university graduates to contribute to the productivity and economic growth of the country. The longer students take to graduate from university the more they deprive the job market of their essential skills.

I also urge university and college students at all higher learning institutions to be more innovative and creative, and be the future drivers of founding start-up companies to create more employment opportunities. Some of the biggest global corporations today were founded by university students even before they could graduate from university – for example Apple by the late Steve Jobs, Microsoft by Bill Gates, Google by Larry page and Sergei Brin etc. So, instead of our intelligent students being used as political tools, I urge them to be innovative, creative and entrepreneurial and contribute to the economic growth and development of Zambia.

Finally, students must also realize that even when public workers, who are tax payers paying for students at universities, have experienced delays in getting their salaries in the past they have not resorted to riotous behaviour and looting. Students must emulate these gallant public service workers since they will be joining the job market soon.

MRS JOYCE NONDE SIMUKOKO,
PATRIOTIC FRONT (PF) CHAIRPERSON FOR LABOUR AND SOCIAL SECURITY OF THE CENTRAL COMMITTEE

Litunga, BRE are the only authorities to comment on Baroste agreement-Lungu

42

Government says it is committed to the successful implementation of the industrialisation and job creation strategy which seeks to create job opportunities especially for the women and youths involved in Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary Kayula Siame said it is for this reason that government has continued to pursue the implementation of the private sector development initiatives that promote and facilitate the development of a competitive private sector.

Ms. Kayula said this in Lusaka last evening at the Annual General Meeting Cocktail reception of the American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia (Amcham Zambia).

Ms. Kayula said government is pleased to be associated with such vibrant chamber which is focused on promoting trade and investment between Zambia and the United States of America (USA).

She said the goal of the American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia is to increase trade investments between Zambia and the USA.

Ms. Kayula said the goal will be achieved by not only working with large American Corporations but also with Zambian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises as these enterprises have been identified to be playing a critical role in fostering the growth of the Zambian economy.

She said her ministry is aware of the continued efforts of the US Embassy in highlighting Zambian prospects and opportunities in a variety of sectors to American businesses.

Ms. Kayula said as a country that is promoting the diversification of its economy, international trade prospects keep the economy open, dynamic, and competitive and such trade is critical to fuelling economic growth.

Speaking earlier, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the United States of America David Young said he appreciates the hard work exhibited by the members.

Mr. Young said AmCham Zambia serves American-controlled companies investing and trading in Zambia while also providing Zambian companies an opportunity to do business with the United States.

Tayali accuse Given Lubinda for corruption that has led to Maize and Mealie meal shortages

CHILUFYA TAYALI Executive Director The Zambian Voice
CHILUFYA TAYALI xecutive Director
The Zambian Voice

Zambian Voice Executive Director Chilufya Tayali has called on President Lungu to immediately fire Agricultural Minister Given Lubinda together with his cohorts Permanent Secretary in the same Ministry and FRA Director Chola Kafwabulula on grounds of corrupt activities involving FRA maize .

Speaking at a media briefing Mr Tayali said the maize and mealie meal shortages which has lead to the hike in prices of the commodity was due to the massive corruption involving the Minister of Agriculture, his Permanent Secretary and the Executive Director of the FRA who have amassed so much wealth at the expense of poor Zambians.

He said the three will only remain in their offices if the President was part of the activities that they have been doing because he had over whelming evidence of the corruption that has been taking place at the FRA involving the named individuals which he will put in public domain.

He said it was not the first time that concerns were being raised on the corrupt activities of Mr Lubinda as his organization raised the issue on the importation of Fertilizer from Dubai though they had no evidence which led to the issue dying a natural death.

He explained that this time his organization has documented evidence which should compel the three to either resign on moral grounds or the President relieving them of their duties with immediate effect.

He further said the three had caused the increase in the prices of mealie meal through their dubious dealings at FRA where he said they had been charging an extra K1000 per tonne on maize purchases form FRA shades.

He said so far they three have amassed over 720million from the sales money he said belonged to the Zambian people who have been buying mealie meal at unaffordable prices.

He said accusations that the opposition was causing panic buying was hogwash as people did not have enough money to buy mealie meal in bulk and store in their kitchens.

He said Mr Lubinda is now living in house as big as a church while the Director at FRA was had 4 customized vehicles wealth K4.5 million less than two years from driving a Mark 2 Chaser when he was employed by Mutembo Nchinto.

He further castigated the ACC for not doing their job saying they were an inept and impotent institution which was not doing its job.

He said if his organization could investigate such massive corruption at such a big institution then ACC could do more but that they were not doing what they were set up to do.

He said people were willing to provide information and evidence but needed to see political will from leaders.

Further Mr Tayali advised the PF not to count on Mr Lubinda because the money he has been stealing through corrupt activities is intended for the financing of his own political party.

He said Mr Lubinda has ambitions of forming his own political party so that he can run as a presidential candidate.

Degree Granting Authority

The State of California Department of Consumer Affairs is vested with the powers to issue state licenses to operate a university, the practice licenses of all kinds of professions from Doctors, Professional Engineers to the lowest level of a barber or a security guard. We realized that Credential Evaluation Service has grown into a very respectable profession and therefore, Credential Evaluation Services should be institutionalized. It has to be regulated to protect the interest of the consumers.

Hence, California University FCE voluntarily registered itself with the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs BPPVE to institutionalize its authority to grant equivalency degrees and academic certificates. This is our guarantee that the equivalency degree of the consumer’s foreign degree is equivalent to the degree granted by the regionally and nationally accredited colleges and universities in the United States of America.

About California University FCE Degree Equivalency Awards

California University FCE does not issue college degrees per se, but degree equivalency, which requires the same scope and breadth of knowledge as someone who has actually completed a nationally or regionally accredited college program.

California University FCE equivalency-degree evaluations are generally accepted for immigration as well as Federal, State and private employment arenas. Below are articles discussing equivalency-degree awards. California University FCE progressively promotes honesty, integrity as well as academic excellence in education.
The U. S. Department of Education Supports Equivalent Degree Awards.

An award (baccalaureate or equivalent degree, as determined by the Secretary, U.S.Department of Education, normally requires at least 4 but not more than 5 years of full-time equivalent college-level work. This includes all bachelors’ degrees conferred in a 5-year cooperative (work-study) program. A cooperative planprovides for alternate class attendance and employment in business, industry, or government; thus, it allows students to combine actual work experience with their college studies. Former Bank of Zambia (BoZ) Governor Caleb Fundanga has dismissed assertions that the Kwacha recent appreciation is artificial.

Dr. Fundanga says contrary to such suggestions, the gains the Kwacha is making are in fact real.

He says the strengthening of the Kwacha is as a result of the rise in the price of copper on the international market and measures the central bank has put in place.

In an interview with QTV News, Dr. Fundanga has wondered how therefore anyone can say that the strengthening of the Kwacha is artificial when measures the Bank of Zambia has put in place are real.

Dr. Fundanga who is also Executive Director at the Macroeconomic and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern African says critics should be fair to the people at the Central Bank who are working over night to correct things.

He says he personally congratulates the Central Bank for the measures put in place which are now contributing to the stability of the Country’s money market.

And Dr. Fundanga notes that the strengthening of the Kwacha cannot overnight translate into the reduction of commodities prices.

Is renewable energy a solution to Zambia’s energy deficit?

Zambia currently faces a huge energy deficit although the country boats of huge potential to explore alternative sources such as renewable energy to meet the gap.
Zambia’s power deficit is estimated at 560 megawatts and the country is now relying on the importation of power to cushion the electricity shortage that has hit the country substantially.

ZESCO Limited, Zambia’s biggest power provider is projected to suffer a revenue loss of about of US$227 million as a result of the deficit. Other alternatives such as construction of hydro plants take long to complete and are long term measures to nip the energy shortage in the bud.

With the challenges elaborated above, Zambia must now look at renewable sources of energy to resolve the shortage of energy. The government, private sector and other stakeholders are now looking at ways of resolving the energy deficit in Zambia.
For instance, the civil society has been engaging various stakeholders around the power shortage under a project called “state of the economy”, with one of the clusters focusing on the energy crisis and its impact on the economy. This is under the auspices of the Civil Society Poverty Observatory Group, an alliance of civil society organisations working around issues of poverty and development with support from Oxfam.

The Oxford English dictionary defines renewable energy is power generated from natural resources, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat, which are naturally replenished.

Zambia is endowed with a number of renewable energy resources that can be explored in order to attract investment in the area and provide adequate energy to the economy.

Zambia currently hosts over 40 percent of the water bodies in the Southern African Development Community region. The country has favourable sunny climatic conditions that make it suitable for solar and wind power solutions.

“The government of Zambia is investing in renewable energy through a project aimed at promoting the transfer of renewable energy technology in achieving the objective of sustainable energy for all. Government has recognized the need for promoting renewable energy as clearly stated in the National Energy Policy of 2008,” Energy Minister Dora Siliya said.

Efforts to harness resources in renewable energy have been minimal and this calls for the need to harness this sector.

Investment in renewable energy will not only promote the productive uses of energy but also indirectly support other socio-economic and environmental objectives, most notably poverty reduction through employment generation and supporting action on climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Generally, investment in the energy sector has been the desire of many stakeholders including the ZDA, civil society and the consumers.

According to CUTS Lusaka International, the energy sector in Zambia currently has one electricity supply company, ZESCO Limited dominating the industry with two other firms that operate on a much smaller scale.

“The dominant industry player ZESCO Limited has been facing a number of challenges over the past years and the need for more investment to come into the sector is being appreciated at policy level. Various stakeholders have called for the diversification of the country’s power generation mix especially now at a time when the country is experiencing a huge power deficit,” said Chenai Mukumba, CUTS Lusaka Co-ordinator at a recent public meeting in Lusaka on Zambia’s energy crisis.
According to the ZDA, Zambia’s hydropower resource potential stands at an estimated 6,000 megawatts while the installed capacity is around 1900 megawatts. The hydroelectric plants represent 99 percent of electricity production in Zambia.
The Kafue Gorge, Kariba North Bank and Victoria Falls Power Stations remain major source of hydroelectricity, which largely consumed by the mines.

It has become apparent that hydroelectricity in Zambia is currently not sufficient to meet the energy deficit the country is facing. It has also become common knowledge that hydroelectricity depends on the availability of water resources and can be affected by poor rain patterns as experienced in the year 2015.
Yusuf Dodia, chairperson for the Private Sector Business Association (PSDA) says renewable energy has enormous potential to take care of Zambia’s power shortage.
Dodia said during a recent panel discussion that it was important to diversify sources of energy instead of focusing on hydropower alone.

“The current energy shortage has taught us that we must look and invest into other sources of energy because we cannot run short of power when there are other means through which we can provide energy for our industry. Renewable energy is good because it is recyclable and does not contribute to greenhouse gases that cause climate change,” he said.

It has become apparent that the demand for energy in Zambia will continue growing, calling for more efforts to generate power.

There is need to seriously consider investments in renewable energy sources in order to help alleviate the current power shortage in Zambia. The government can do so by providing special incentives to attract investment in the sector.
Efforts such the activities by the civil society must be emulated in order to encourage discussions and engagements on the energy crisis in Zambia so that tangible solutions are laid down to resolve the challenge.

There is no doubt that the energy shortage in Zambia has impacted the economy adversely and this needs prudent measures to avert.
Renewable sources of energy present one of the best ways of resolving the energy deficit in Zambia because of their ability to replenish naturally. Renewable energy sources are cheaper and friendly to the environment.

Chief Nkole has called on government to disband the Katanino settlement scheme in Kapiri Mposhi district because of abuse in the allocation of land.

And First Lady Esther Lungu has urged men to avoid extra marital affairs which she said have the potential to affect the economic growth of their families and the country at large.

Chief Nkole said the scheme was being abused and had been invaded by foreigners.

He said this when Mrs. Lungu paid a courtesy call on him during the Esther Lungu Foundation tour of the district.

The traditional leader also appealed to government to electrify his chiefdom.

“There is need to electrify this chiefdom so that schools can benefit and start offering computer lessons,” he said.

Chief Nkole added that there was need to ensure peace prevailed in the country in the forthcoming general elections.

He further encouraged the First Lady to continue humbling herself and being of service to the less privileged people in society.

And speaking to a huge crowd at Nkole primary school, Mrs. Lungu said there was need for men to avoid extra marital affairs so as to develop their families economically.

“Men should avoid using the money they get to drink beer and going for other women,” she said.

She said the money which some men spend on buying beer can be used to send their children to school and develop their families economically.

Meanwhile, the First Lady gave out K36, 000 to 12 women associations in the area.

VICE President Inonge Wina gives her speech during the African Regional Labour Administration Centre (ARLAC) governing council meeting at Avani Victoria Falls Resort in Livingstone on Wednesday. Listening are ARLAC Vice Chairperson Dr. Chris Ngige (l) and Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda.

Vice-President Inonge Wina is hopeful that Zambians will know the modalities of the referendum by next week.

Speaking when she addressed Zambians living in the United Kingdom in London during a dinner that was organised in her honour by the High Commissioner to the United Kingdom His Excellency Mr. Muyeba Chikonde at the Zambia House on Saturday,Mrs Wina told Zambians that the August elections will run alongside with the Referendum.

She said the referendum question was being formulated by the Electoral Commission of Zambia and the Ministry of Justice, and the question will determine whether the Bill of Rights will be included in the amended constitution.

“I believe that some of you have already received information on how these elections will be held including the fact that the Referendum will be part of the election process. It means that when Zambians vote they will vote for their President, they will vote for the running mate together with their President, they will vote for their Members of Parliament, they will vote for their councillors, they will also vote in the referendum. The referendum will be a “yes or no” question because in a referendum you are only asked whether you agree or not,” she said.

The Vice President said the Bill of Rights could not be passed with the amended constitution as the original constitution stipulated having a referendum in order to adopt the Bill of Rights.

She said it was not possible to set aside the referendum as the government could not hold two elections within a years due to financial constraints, therefore the decision to hold the referendum and elections simultaneously.

“We have to teach our people on the modalities of exercising their democratic duty, it will take time although, we only have few months to go but i hope by next week, the referendum question would have been dealt with and people will know, how they are going to respond to that issue,” she said.

And High Commissioner Chikonde called on Zambians in the UK to always engage the mission in efforts aimed at safeguarding Zambia’s interests in Britain.

Mr. Chikonde reported that the UK/Zambia Investment forum which Her Honour the Vice President officiated in London last year had continued to bear fruits as evidenced by UK dignitaries who had visited Zambia such as, the Lord mayor of London who visited with a business delegation, Baroness Lynda Chalker, the former minister who is currently Director of Africa matters to form linkages between UK and Zambian businesses, a 14 member delegation composing of six British Members of Parliament who participated in the 134th International Parliamentary Union (IPU) and six companies that registered and traveled to Zambia for the 5th edition of the Zambia International Investment forum (ZIIF) which ended last week.

“Your passion and dedication to our country under the leadership of President Edgar Chagwa Lungu continues to inspires us all,” he said.
