PF Has Taken Zambia Backwards

Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Acting National Women’s Chairperson Lisa Pasi says that the Patriotic Front (PF) Government has quickly reversed the progress and prosperity achieved by the MMD and taken Zambia backwards in just 4 short years. She said they have miserably let down the many Zambians who voted for them.

Mrs. Pasi, a Development Management expert, has said Zambians know that the PF has no vision for this nation whatsoever after hearing their Party General Secretary Mr. Davies Chama and Minister of Finance Mr. Alexander Chikwanda openly admitting that the people of Zambia have descended into terrible poverty.

In a congratulatory message to the MMD’s Myson Phiri who scooped the recently held Kakumbi Ward by-election in Malambo, Eastern Province, Mrs. Pasi has said the win is a great inspiration and morale booster to genuine MMD sympathizers who are confident that the efforts of reorganization by the party leadership are yielding positive results.

She said many Zambians know that MMD is the only party that has had a clear vision and policy frame-work to turn Zambia into a prosperous nation having managed to turn the country to a middle-income economy just before leaving office in 2011.

Mrs Pasi said this win is a rude wake-up call to the PF who should know that Zambians have realized that they were tricked by the “Donchi Kubeba” lies and deception of “More Money in your pockets, More Jobs and Lower Taxes.” The people, especially women, who are bearing the brunt of the suffering, know that they are much worse off now than when MMD was in power. She said the PF’s vicious campaign to destroy the MMD and erase its unmatched economic track record has failed.

“It is annoying that the PF Government should now start a blame-game of who has caused the poverty that the people are going through. The answer lies squarely at their door-step because they are the ones who are plundering the economy and wasting millions on a bloated government. They are wasting money on trips abroad, unnecessary by-elections, ill-planned projects and they have now resorted to excessive borrowing,” she said.

Mrs. Pasi has made an earnest appeal to the PF Government in their last few months in power, to think about the poor vulnerable women and children and has asked Zambians to give the New Hope MMD another chance to steer Zambia back to the path of development as it did before. She said the New Hope MMD is “born again” and has rid itself of corrupt divisive elements.

She has called upon all progressive women in the country to join the New Hope MMD and raise the bar beyond the achievements of the previous MMD administrations and participate in a new move to take Zambia from a lower middle income country to a fully developed nation.

“We have been taken backwards by this government. The Hour has come for the second phase of Zambia’s development push and we need all women to arise,” said Mrs Pasi.

She said only MMD has a clear vision to deliver suffering Zambians from the PF misrule and urged Zambians to vote for the New Hope MMD in 2016 and help create another dramatic turn-around of the economy and politics as happened in 1991.

Zesco eager to shed flyweight status with Clifford Mulenga coup

Clifford Mulenga
Clifford Mulenga

Clifford Mulenga’s arrival at conspicuous consumers Zesco United signals the Ndola sides serious reaffirmation to shift the center of gravity of Zambian football to the once football backwater town.

The much-travelled winger, and still a prime target on the market, has made a shocking permanent move back home after a frustrating time in the South African PSL where he began his professional career over a decade ago with University of Pretoria FC including brief stints in Sweden and Israel.

Interestingly, Zesco will mark Clifford’s first stop in the Zambia league after leaving Chiparamba Academy over twelve years ago.

His new club Zesco have already made some shrewd buys this season with Kenyan defender David Owino and left-back Nigerian Ayo Olwafenmi both making an instant impact for the current league leaders.

Zesco are also homing-in a second back-to-back FAZ Super Division title much to the envy of illustrious giants up the road on the Kitwe/Ndola dual carriageway, Nkana and Power Dynamos.

Clifford may have not fulfilled his full potential during his years abroad but joins Zesco to reunite with a familiar face in what maybe Last Chance Saloon for the 2007 CAF Rookie of the Year.

Zesco coach George Lwandamina played a notable role in the players development at Under-20 from the Cosafa U20 Cup to the 2007 CAF Under-20 Cup where his three goals sent Zambia through to the Canada FIFA U20 World Cup that same year where the team reached the last 16.

Clifford is also the second former Lwandamina protege to join Zesco after his class of 2007 mate midfielder Justin Zulu who arrived last year and has made authoritative displays that earned him a Zambia recall last year.

Rumour has it another Class of 2007 star Fwayo Tembo almost joined his former mentor in the summer, a clear sign of the faith Lwandamina’s ex-pupils have in him.

Clifford’s arrival also adds an interesting dimension to Zesco’s midfield where the talented Cletus Chota has reigned with terror since joining Zesco this season from Nchanga Rangers after amazingly slipping through Power Dynamos’ fingers where he spent the 2014 season on loan.

Clifford’s arrival also coincides with Zesco chasing a fifth league title that will move them within one title of under-performing Power who are currently second and who were second best again last term to the Ndola club.

With four crowns in ten nine years and an ambitious acquisition project, success for Zesco in 2015 with this business model will surely see them set the standard for the foreseeable future.

Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba has appealed to Zambian diplomats not to engage in activities which can injure the country’s reputation in foreign countries.

Mr. Kalaba said Zambian diplomats must lead exemplary lives and ensure that they promote Zambia’s interests abroad.

He was speaking when he addressed Zambian diplomats at the Zambian Mission in Lubumbashi yesterday during a handover of five government houses for diplomats which were recently rehabilitated to reduce government expenditure on rentals in missions abroad.

Mr. Kalaba said diplomats must work hard and exhibit good conduct to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries adding that Lubumbashi was a Strategic Mission as it provided a link between Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

This is according to a press statement availed to ZANIS by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Public Relations Officer Dorcas Chileshe.

During his visit, Mr. Kalaba also met Zambians living in Lubumbashi to get views on the diaspora policy which government is formulating.

The Minister urged Zambians to ensure that they visit their home country regularly and contribute to national development through the various investment opportunities available in Zambia.

Mr. Kalaba also encouraged them to allow their children to visit Zambia often for them to connect with family members back home.

Lubumbashi is situated in Katanga Province which has more than 50,000 Zambians.

International winger Clifford Mulenga has joined FAZ Super Division champions Zesco United.

Mulenga,28, has been un-attached since leaving South African club Ajax Cape Town last May following the expiry of his one year contract.

He was introduced to his Zesco team mates on Tuesday morning at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

“I would like to confirm that Zesco United have signed 2007 African Young Player of the Year Clifford Mulenga,” Zesco media officer Katebe Chengo said.

Chengo could not reveal the contract duration.

“He was signed as a free agent after he was released by Ajax Cape Town of South Africa.

He was formally introduced to his team mates this morning at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium,”she said.

Mulenga was groomed by Chiparamba Academy before he joined Pretoria University FC in 2004.

PF should explain to Zambians why floor price for maize has not been announced

Government’s failures in the agriculture sector

The people of Mkushi and of course many Zambians depend on agriculture with the main source of income being maize. Most small scale farmers depend solely on maize farming because the current and previous government have failed to explore the potential for diversification of crops that can be grown to suit specific regions and the weather patterns including, a failure to identify crops that can be grown in rain season as well as in winter.

The PF government removed subsidies on fuel, maize and input from farmers. This increased the production cost on the poor farmers. Further, the current government also reduced the number of bags of fertilizer and seed given to farmers compared to previous allocations by the MMD government.

Today is 11th August, despite the fact that we had poor rainfall pattern in the country which forced many farmers to harvest early, the minister of Agriculture Honorable Given Lubinda wants to come out so smart in his response to the media and in parliament regarding the crop marketing and floor price particularly for maize.

Under the NAREP government, Zambia will be a food basket for the entire Southern African region.

Truth be told, the PF government has no tangible solutions to the problems that most of our farmers are facing, including the commercial farmers. To make matters worse Hon. Lubinda should have served well in another ministry such as Local government or Information and Broadcasting. We would have advised the President to make such changes but since we know that he will not take our advice together with his government, there is nothing we can do about it.

Hon Lubinda should explain to the people of Zambia why, at such a late time, the floor price for maize has not yet been announced. Since we know that the country is surviving on debt, we can conclude that the issue is not about the moisture content of the maize or the many excuses Hon. Lubinda seem to come up with but the fact that the government has NO money to purchase the crops.

We urge all farmers and well-meaning Zambians not to ever vote for a party like PF that has no plan for them. This country still depends on copper as the main Forex earner when we should have moved to agriculture with the focused leadership of President Chipimo.

Under the NAREP government, Zambia will be a food basket for the entire Southern African region. We will reintroduce winter crop cultivation and since many peasant farmers in Mkushi are also in tomato growing, we will support such farmers to enable them expand their production and eventually attract industries that may produce finished products like tomato pastes and ketchup whilst creating local jobs for youths. The commercial farmers will first need to satisfy the local demand for other crops like wheat, soya beans etc. We will be able to make our own cereal and baby porridge by attracting industries to open up not only in Mkushi but countrywide.

Currently we are importing many baby cereals and finished goods processed outside Zambia with all raw materials coming from Zambia which makes these goods more expensive for an average Zambian to afford. By processing locally and exporting the finished products, Zambia will earn a lot of forex and will no longer be surviving on debt. All we need is good leadership to make things happen and not the current leadership we have experimented which is not inspiring. The damage is there for all of us to see.

Grandfather dies in fire after saving grandchildren

An 87 year old man of Mongu district in Western Province, Lubinda Kwalombota, has died in an inferno after he rescued two young children from the same fire.

The incident occurred about midnight on Friday last week in Kazungula District’s Police Camp area where the late Mr Kwalombota went to visit his relatives.

Namakau Moopo, who is Mr Kwalombota’s granddaughter, narrated that the deceased died after he successfully removed two young boys from a house which catch fire.

“What happened was that we were using a candle in the night since children were not used to sleeping without lights.

“When they woke up in the night, there was a candle which was burning and my grandfather noticed that the bed for children was on fire and then he called the children and helped them to come out of the house,” Ms Moopo said.

[pullquote]What happened was that we called the fire brigades but they were not answering the phone and later told us that they had no fuel.
[/pullquote]

She said she started pouring water to quench fire and she did not know that Mr Kwalombota, who woke up the children, was unfortunately caught by the same fire.

“I did not know that there was a person in the fire and I was worried that maybe one of the children was burnt along and that was how I poured more water.

“Unfortunately, fire increased as I poured more water and I then called the neighbors and well-wishers for help but fire could not stop,” Ms Moopo said.

She said the Police, well-wishers and herself called the Kazungula Municipal Council Fire Brigade to stop the fire but the fire fighters did not go to the scene.

Ms Moopo said fire was only quenched off completely on Saturday morning around 02:00 hours by neighbors and friends and Mr Kwalombota had already died by then.

A resident, Mervis Kasongo, said it was unfortunate that the Kazungula Fire Brigade could not go to the scene to save the life Mr Kwalombota.

Ms Kasongo also blamed ZESCO for not going to the funeral house to check the power connections.

“What happened was that we called the fire brigades but they were not answering the phone and later told us that they had no fuel.

“They also didn’t come to get the body of the late and they have not even come to visit us at the funeral,” she said.

Mandia Ward Councillor Brighton Mwampole said the community in his area was not happy with what transpired on Friday night.

“This old man is the one who saw the fire and he saved the lives of two young boys and the entire members of the house but the same fire killed him.

“We have fire tenders and we are not happy because life could have been saved if the fire tender came on time. As a community leader, I am not happy and I would like the behavior of fire fighters to change in future,” Mr Mwampole said.

And Kazungula District Commissioner, Pascalina Musokotwane, who visited the funeral house on Monday and later attended the burial, was also not happy with Council fire fighters as the incident occurred behind the market which was not very far from the local authority.

“We are supposed to be working as a family and not whereby other people feel they are more superior and more learned and clever than other people.

“We were not going to be losing life just like that. If the council acted promptly, that man would have been saved and I am putting the blame on them. We have a fire tender which the Government purchased and we have the workers who are supposed to do their job,” Ms Musokotwane said.

Efforts to get a comment from Kazungula Municipal Council fire fighters proved future.

Government says it recognizes the immense threat lightening poses to citizens and the economy of the country.

Deputy Minister in the Office of the Vice President Lazarous Chungu said government attaches great importance to issues of lightening as it has a devastating impact on the economy.

Mr. Chungu observed that Zambia has had a fair share of natural hazards that have had devastating impact on human beings, property and loss of lives in some parts of the country.

The Deputy Minister however said government welcomes initiatives from the private sector aimed at promoting early warning mechanisms for natural hazards including lightening.

Mr Chungu was speaking in Lusaka today when he officially opened the first ever lightening protection symposium which has attracted over 10 countries from across the world.

“I now look forward to see safety and ultimate end of saving lives and protection of equipment and consequently reduction in equipment breakdowns that contribute to social and economic development of the nation,” Mr. Chungu said.

Mr Chungu also launched the Zambia Centre for Lightening and Electro-Magnetic and challenged the authorities to assist government through his Office on early mitigation measures.

Speaking earlier, Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM) Science and Technology Focal Point Person Patrick Nkanza disclosed that Zambia stands ready to learn and would engage NAM in addressing her lightening challenges.

Dr. Nkanza, who is Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education, said Zambia would seriously implement the strategic plan to its logical conclusion.

The symposium has attracted experts in science and technology, and several scientists from across the globe.

Hamasaka was facing one count of being in possession of ponographic materials which were found in one of his seized laptops on 9th July 2013.

In his judgment ,Magistrate Obbister Musukwa said the prosecution had failed to prove any of the charges placed on him.

He said it was not in dispute that the laptop belonged to him but that it was evident that the 29 pictures of two men having sex with one lady were planted on his laptop because it was not in his custody.

“From the evidence in Court it is clear that the laptop was in the hands of the police and whoever planted those porn pictures is not known but leaves much to be desired than what meets the eye,” he said.

He dismissed the evidence of the two State witnesses from ZICTA and arresting officer due to inconsistencies.

‘It has not been the same especially for our young children who were traumatized with the experience after being held hostage in their own home at such an awkward hour,’ Hamasaka stated.

During Mr.Hamasaka’s trial a Forensic Computer expert, told the parked courtroom that according to his expert analysis, there was evidence the laptop and files in question with the alleged obscene materials were accessed on 21st July 2013 in the absence of the accused and his lawyers.

He said the last login date on the computer, possibly by the accused person Mr. Hamasaka was on 21st June 2013.On 9th July 2013 the computers were seized and yet the same computer and files in question were opened and accessed on 21st July 2013, when they were not in his custody.

Newly established public , Kwame Nkrumah University of Kabwe, yesterday held its first ever graduation ceremony held under the theme: ‘fostering national development through quality education’.

Two thousand two hundred seventy (2270) undergraduate students graduated from the institution of whom 1,232 were females and 1,038 were males, representing a pass rate87 per cent.

Speaking at the ceremony, deputy Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Sydney Mushanga said government was aware of the many challenges the institution was facing as an emerging public institution.

Mr. Mushanga, who was the guest of honour, has however assured management of Nkrumah University of government’s support.

“We are making frantic efforts to give you all the necessary support so that you can continue to move forward and record more success,” he said.

He thanked the university council, management, lecturers and support staff at the institution for their commitment to duty.

Mr. Mushanga congratulated the graduating students but was quick to remind them of their role in the education sector.

He appealed to the graduates not to be satisfied with their paper credentials adding that performance was more important in the teaching profession.

The Deputy minister , who is also Bwacha constituency Member of Parliament urged the graduates not to shun serving in rural areas adding that children in remote areas were the most vulnerable of education services saying the country needs a number of qualified teachers to lead to high pupil performance in schools.

Acting Vice Chancellor Rachel Kabeta praised government’s efforts of expanding space and enrolment in secondary schools.

Mrs Kabeta said the substantial upgrading of basic schools and construction of secondary schools across the country required more recruitment of teachers.

The case in which two Patriotic Front Members (PF) in Kitwe are charged with obstructing a police officer from perfuming his duty contrary to section 250 (b) of the Penal code Cap 87of the laws of Zambia, has been adjourned to August 18, 2015 for commencement of trial.

This was when the duo ‘s lawyer, Chitala Chali appeared before Kitwe Magistrate Ikechukwu Iduma in Kitwe today, and asked for an adjournment for him to get full instructions on the matter from his clients to prepare for trial.

Mr Chali , of G.M Legal Practitioners , submitted that he had received the appointment for the trial at short notice as such he needed time to get full instruction from his clients and prepare for trial.

He argued that the prosecution in the case would not be prejudiced as a result of the adjournment because it was the first time the case was coming for trial.

Magistrate Iduma obliged to the request and adjourned the case to August 18 for commencement of trial.

The two are Steven Kainga 49, who is PF Copperbelt Provincial Chairman and Stanley Chandindi 48, the PF provincial youth vice chairman, respectively.

Facts are that the duo whilst acting together on unknown date recently did allegedly attack the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema in Kitwe for un explained reasons.

Lafarge Zambia Plc has reported a four percent rise in profits in the first six months of 2015 of K187 million.

The firm also saw its sales turnover jump by 14% to K700 million over the same period.
Its Earnings Per Share rose by 4% to ZMW 0.936.

The company described its first half results as Solid in the context of a slowdown in the Zambian construction market and negative growth in the DRC.

It said Electricity supply disruptions adversely impacted cement production but that its financial position and cash flow remained solid with no external debt.

The company has since declared an interim dividend of K0.25 per share for the year ending 31 December 2015 was declared.

Lafarge Zambia Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Rigaux market activity was subdued in the first half of the year in the Zambian market and negatively impacted by political uncertainties in the Democratic Republic of Congo which continues to be its major export market.

Mr Rigaux said the successful issuance of the $1.25 billion Eurobond by the Zambian Government is expected to generate increased construction activity.

He said Lafarge Zambia is now part of the most advanced and successful construction group in the world following the successful completion of the LafargeHolcim merger.

“The Company is ready to leverage the benefits of belonging to such a strong Group. It is determined to keep its market leadership and continue to offer our customers the best quality products and services,” Mr Rigaux said.

Mr Rigaux said domestic demand in the second half is expected to continue to slow down until Eurobond proceeds are directed towards infrastructure and construction activity.

“Strong focus in the second half will be placed on adjusting our cost base wherever necessary,” he said.

Government has admitted that the rapid technological development has impacted negatively on the postal services sector in Zambia.
