Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is today Sunday the 14th of December expected to conduct what has been termed by UPND media team as a campaign-defining rally in Kasama.
This follows the past 6 days that have seen presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema campaigning in Muchinga, Northern and Luapula Provinces alongside the Honourable Felix Mutati, UPND National Chairperson Mutale Nalumango, and former Minister of Finance Dr Katele Kalumba, to name a few.
According to UPND, the delegation has drawn crowds across the regions, in defiance of past claims that the party only has a regional support base. Mr Hichilema has been welcomed by a number of traditional leaders and chiefs during his tour who have honoured him with their counsel and guidance.
UPND further said that Mr Hichilema and his entourage have delivered the message to Zambians everywhere that they are campaigning for a united Zambia and to move Zambia forward together.
Along the way they have taken the time to listen to people’s concerns and needs. Recurring themes have been the struggle farmers currently face due to late or non-payment of what they are owed by government, the rising cost of living, and the need for government support to help unlock local business opportunities and kick-start local economies. During the rally, which will be broadcast live on Muvi TV and Radio Mano, Mr Hichilema is expected to again restate his major policy commitments in response to these problems.
Former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa is set to attend the rally as she continues to throw her full weight behind Mr Hichilema’s candidacy for the 20 January 2015 election. Mrs Mwanawasa, who has been campaigning alongside Mr Hichilema at several of his rallies already, is preparing to set off on the campaign trail on Monday to engage civil society groups and leaders. After joining the Kasama rally she will travel on to the Copperbelt, before Mr Hichilema is expected there later this month.
Mr Hichilema attended the Church service this morning before heading to the rally, which will be held in President’s Park
Yesterday , UPND President Hakainde Hichilema, Lunte MP the Honourable Felix Mutati, former First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, National Chairperson Mutale Nalumango and entourage were, according to UPND, received by large crowds in Chinsali and Mpika Districts where they addressed rallies.
During the visit a number of PF and MMD officials resigned from their respective parties to join the opposition UPND. Leading the PF members was Provincial Information Secretary Mulenga Mwananshiku and PF Shiwangandu Chair lady Stefenia Malama who said PF was Sata and Sata was PF, and so the party died with him.
Speaking during the rallies, Lunte MP Felix Mutati told the crowds that as opposition MPs, they had sat down and scrutinised the people vying for the presidency and concluded that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema is the only suitable candidate to develop the country.
Mutati said Zambia faces numerous economic challenges and needs a strong team of proven economic managers such as Mr. Hichilema to move the country forward.
And the UPND leader Mr. Hichilema said he is in politics as a missionary to improve the economy of the country, unlike others that were serving personal interests.
In Mpika, Mr. Hichilema committed to improve the operations of TAZARA through meaningful dialogue with the Tanzanian government so that the company can be self-sustaining.
He also reiterated that he will work to reduce the price of fertiliser so that peasant farmers can have access to cheaper inputs, grow more and reduce food prices.
The UPND leader also committed to improving the tourism sector in Mpika so that local communities can benefit from wildlife as opposed to the current situation where only foreigners were benefiting.
He also emphasised that the campaign is based on the platform of unity across political divides and called on all well-meaning citizens to campaign and vote for the UPND so as to transform the economy of the country.
“When you combine the various skills that will form part of our team, such as Felix Mutati, Mutale Nalumango and others, you can be rest assured that the country will be in safe hands. My integrity is also what I bring to the political arena and I am in it to fix the economy,” he said.
Mr. Hichilema thanked the people of Chinsali and Mpika for coming out in large numbers and listen to his message.
After the rally, Mr. Hichilema and his entourage toured Mpika market and mingled with traders before driving to Chief Chikwanda’s palace where he was welcomed by the traditional leader.
Mr. Hichilema assured the traditional leader that he will never meddle in traditional affairs and he will respect and value the wise counsel from traditional leaders. Chief Chikwanda said he was touched by the strong and powerful message delivered by Mr. Hichilema.

Mr. Hichilema said that the construction of the two public universities, namely Robert Makasa and Paul Mushindo respectively.
He said that two varsities that the late Republican President late Michael Chilufya had embarked on in Chinsali will be successfully completed and commissioned once his party is voted into power after the January 20, 2015 presidential by –election.
Mr. Hichilema said that the two universities under construction in Chinsali District are very important to the people in the area and the rest of the country.
He added that his party will also ensure that it gives bursaries and scholarships at all public universities including those students who will be educated at the two universities in Chinsali.
He was speaking at a public rally held at the presidents ‘park. Mr. Hichilema said that his Government would ensure that all Zambians have free education from Grade One to the University
However, speaking at Mulambwa Ground in Mongu yesterday, the Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Edgar Lungu said that there was no way opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema can claim he will continue where late President Sata left because he does not understand the vision the late President left.
Mr Lungu also said there was nothing new MMD presidential candidate Rupiah Banda can offer to the Zambians if voted into power.
He said the PF will continue with its pro-poor programmes because poor people also have the right to good life.
Mr Lungu also said that Western Province is on course for unprecedented development spearheaded by the Patriotic Front (PF) Government, the party’s president Edgar Lungu has said.
He said Western Province had been neglected since Zambia’s independence in 1964 but with the PF coming into office, Government has started implementing projects to develop the region.
Meanwhile, the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has said that it has sufficient members of Parliament (MPs) to pass any progressive bill and efficiently run government.
UPND deputy spokesperson Edwin Lifwekelo said in a statement yesterday that contrary to an impression created in the media, the UPND has 37 MPs with eight MPs from MMD and independent MPs that are backing them.
And, UPND president Hakainde Hichilema’s wife Mutinta appealed to the electorate at a rally in Lusaka yesterday to vote for her husband because he has what it takes to meet their expectations of an affordable life.

KASAMA District Commissioner Kalanga Bwalya (in blue cap) commissions a water borehole at Lukashi Basic School in Kasama
OVER 5,180,000 people in Zambia do not have access to clean water and 7,980,000 people have no access to clean sanitation.
WaterAid country representative Fatoumata Haidara said lack of sanitation is a public health issue as people are affected by their neighbours and communities’ sanitation status as well as their own.
Speaking during the National Stakeholder Dissemination Workshop of the Budget Tracking findings on Friday, Ms Haidara said the implications of not improving access to clean water and good sanitation will have a spiral effect on all the other sectors such as health and education.
“Consequently this will continue to affect the country’s ability not just to reduce poverty and achieve MDG target but more importantly curb water and sanitation related diseases and realise the vision 2030,”she said.
Ms Haidara said the vision of the Zambia’s water and sanitation situation sector is ‘a Zambia where all users have access to water and sanitation and utlilise them in an efficient and sustainable manner for wealth creation and improved livelihood by 2030”.
She said the goal is to achieve 75 percent accessibility to reliable safe water and 50 percent adequate sanitation by 2015 in order to enhance economic growth and improve the quality of life.
“The MDGs, which Zambia is working towards along with other countries of the world, include the target to reduce by half the proportion of people without access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation,” Ms Haidara said.
Ms Haidara said although the proportion of people with access to basic sanitation facilities rose rapidly in other countries in the past few years, Zambia like many countries in sub-Saharan Africa only had a marginal improvement of five percent from 32 percent to 37 percent.
“Zambia has one of the highest under 5 mortality rates in the world at 182/1,000 live births and it accounts for 1/5 of all deaths among children under five. Among the contributing factors is poor sanitation and hygiene,” she said.
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo
Government says it is firmly committed to support and promote the growth of a vibrant media industry in the country.
Information and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo says the State wants to see a competitive, free and responsible vibrant media.
He added that it was government’s desire to see that the media that plays an active role in the democratic and economic dispensation of the country.
ZANIS reports that Mr Kasolo said this when he officiated at the tenth anniversary of 5 fm radio station held at Golden Peacock Hotel last evening in Lusaka.
Mr Kasolo said government will support and assist any media institution in the country that wants to expand its operations.
The Permanent Secretary commended 5fm radio proprietor Mateyo Phiri for entering into a partnership with a Chinese Media publishing and broadcasting company in order to expand and improve services.
He noted that the media under the PF government is operating freely and providing adequate coverage to all stake holders.
Mr Kasolo commended the media for providing adequate and fair coverage to all political parties currently campaigning for the January 20, 2015 presidential by-election.
And speaking earlier, Mr Phiri thanked government for levelling the playing field in the media industry.
He said his Radio Station will endeavour to connect the local consumers to the global market and provide accurate information for people to make informed decisions.
Mr Phiri appealed to government to approve 5 fm radio’s request to expand its operations and broadcast to central and Copperbelt provinces.
Government has said that the public pension schemes in the country need immediate reform. Secretary to the Cabinet Roland Msiska said that the schemes needed revision to meet the retirement needs of civil servants.
Dr. Msiska explained that the current pension scheme system is archaic and bankrupt and unable to meet the retirement needs of civil servants.
The Secretary to Cabinet said this when he launched the Zambian Chapter of the African Leadership Foundation at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka yesterday.
He explained that government was prompted to adjust the retirement age of civil servants from 55 to 65 years in order to secure the welfare of public service workers.
And speaking at the same function, International Development consultant Victor Koh urged Zambia to secure the future of the country by investing and developing in human resource to manage the country’s natural resources.
Dr Koh said Singapore had managed to move from a third world country to a first world status through leadership transformation that oversaw economic transformation and development
Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda says the 65 years retirement age does not affect those that contribute to National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and Local Authority Superannuation Fund (LASF).
Mr Shamenda said in an interview that the retirement age affects the members of the Public Service Pension Fund (PSPF) currently standing at 69,482 members as at August 2014.
“This implies that the increment in the retirement age only affects a small number of the formally employed population, which according to the labour force survey, is about 860,000 as of June 2012 and PSPF had about 55,000 pensioners and beneficiaries,” Mr Shamenda said.
Mr Shamenda said the 65 years retirement age should not cause anxiety in workers, adding that the retirement age in the southern region and beyond is 60.
“We adjusted the retirement age as a way of increasing people’s life span. Information has shown that most people that have retired at 55 have died earlier because of many factors,” Mr Shamenda said.
Commenting on concerns that keeping too many old people in public service will perpetuate unemployment among youths, Mr Shamenda said the best way is not to eliminate the older workers but to find ways of creating more employment.
“How many people are applying for contracts after retirement? A lot of them still want to do something and keep themselves active? The answer is not to kick out the old people, the answer is to create more employment opportunities,” Mr Shamenda said.
He said the essence of retirement is not for people to go in manual work or active employment after they retire, but to leisure around.
On November 21, 2014, acting President Guy Scott signed Statutory Instrument No. 63 of 2014 which stipulates that the retirement age for public service workers is 65
“And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body…he did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.”
(Romans 4:19–21 NKJV)
TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
Abraham had many obstacles coming against the promise of God in his life. God told him that he would be “the father of many nations.” Abraham was over 90 years old before he ever saw that promise begin to come to pass. This scripture tells us that he didn’t consider his body.
He didn’t think and meditate on all the reasons he couldn’t be the father of many nations. No, he considered and thought about the strength and ability of God! He thought about God’s faithfulness and gave praise and glory to Him. Abraham exercised faith which enabled God to move on His behalf.
What are you believing God for? Does it seem impossible? Is it taking a long time? Consider your God. Consider His Word. Consider His faithfulness. Just like Abraham, you’ll grow strong as you give glory to God. Your faith will open the door for God to move in every area of your life!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father, thank You for Your faithfulness and strength at work in my life today. I choose to consider Your ability over my circumstance. I choose to trust You. I give You praise, honor and glory, now and always in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Patriotic Front (PF) Presidential aspirant Edgar Lungu says contrary to assertions in sections of society, he has a vision for mother Zambia once elected as Republican President.
Mr. Lungu dispelled sentiments that he did not have vision for Zambia referring to how the PF emerged victorious in the 2011 general elections.
Addressing a public rally at Mulambwa Ground in Mongu District today, Mr. Lungu said that the PF party managed to come into power in 2011 due to a number campaign messages of developing Zambia under the leadership of the late President Michael Chilufya Sata.
Mr. Lungu said that it was necessary for the people of Zambia to elect him as President of Zambia so that he could continue with the on-going developmental programmes that the late President Michael Sata left behind.
He said since the PF under the late President Sata had a vision for the country, there was no way he could abandon the on-going PF developmental programmes when he is elected into office on January 20th, 2014.
Mr. Lungu said that being a patriotic Zambian there was no way he could mess up on-going developmental programmes that were for the benefit of the citizenry adding that that him and his party would even initiate for more.
He said that the on-going developmental programmes in the health, road infrastructure, and education sectors in the province will continued by his administration if elected.
And Edgar Lungu has warned that he will not support gay rights in Zambia.
Speaking at a public rally in Mongu, the Defence Minister said he was not going to compromise human nature because of money.
“We will not support homosexuality. I will not compromise human nature because of money.
God made man and woman. A certain newspaper attacks me because they support gay rights. There is one small editor of one small newspaper who thinks he can overrule the will of the people” Lungu said
Earlier, the PF president first paid a courtesy call on the Litunga in Limulunga before proceeding for a public rally at Mulambwa ground. Former Republican Vice President under the MMD Lupando Mwape and other distinguished dignitaries where in his entourage.

FDD president Edith Nawakwi completed her campaign tour of Western Province with the call to the people in the province to judge all the candidates equally and ensure that the choose a candidate who will rebuild the trust and restore the broken promises.
Speaking when she met the Kuta (Induna full council) at the Litunga’s palace Ms. Nawakwi said the demands for equality in the sharing of national resources are genuine and need a pragmatic leader to resolve the current challenges being faced in the country.
She said it was the duty of the public to ensure that they put in office a person not based on gender, tribe region or religion but a person capable of ensuring that the needs of the people are taken care of.
She explained that she was offering herself as a candidate not because she had all the solutions to the challenges but that she was willing to work with everyone in the country to find solutions to the challenges.
She further charged other candidates have been going round bragging about their credentials and that they are the best take over but hers was a call to the people to ensure that they vote without emotions and judge every candidate accordingly and judge their capabilities.
She observed that the country cannot continue in its current path and that there is need for collective answers involving everyone because people have different solutions depending on their circumstances.
Ms Nawakwi stated that if people made collective decisions the complaint of inequality will be the thing the past as that would lead to everyone being part of the solution.
And the opposition leader has observed the uniqueness of western province as regards traditional governance system which she said can be used to improve the lives of people in the province.
She said all the provinces in the country were endowed with different natural resources which are supposed to be used to develop the provinces and Western Province was not different.
Meanwhile the Ngambela’s Kuta has advised who ever gets in to office after the January 20th presidential elections to ensure that the many issues affecting the province are dealt with expeditiously including the issue of the barotse agreement of 1964.
And the Kuta has demanded that the findings of the Rodger Chongwe commission of inquiry be made public.
Speaking when opposition FDD President Edith nawakwi paid curtesy call on the Litunga, the Indunas seating as a Kuta (full council) said the people of Western Province are tired of promises which remain unfulfilled once people ascend to power.
Induna Imandi who spoke on behalf of the Kuta said the people of western province have made their position clear on a number of issues which include the high poverty levels and the Barotse agreement among others.
He explained that all the people want in the province is a fair share of the national cake which would help them alleviate the high poverty levels experienced by the local people.
On the Barotse agreement Induna Imandi said the people Barotse land made their views clear during the sittings of the Commission of Inquiry which should be made public by anyone who comes into office.
He said people are tied of the arrests and shootings hence the need for whoever comes into office to deal with the matter conclusively so that their children can stop agitating for secession.
He noted that the people calling for the secession of Barotse land from Zambia have seen the inequality in which the national cake is shared and the suffering of the people in the province something he said should came to an end.
And Induna Inete encouraged the opposition leader who is the only female candidate to compete with the men on equal footing.
He noted that Barotse Royal Establishment is a perfect model of decentralization as the Kingdom has been practicing that for over 400 years and that the opposition party should effectively sale their ideals as that is what will convince people to vote for her.
The opposition leader who was in the province for 4 days held successful meetings with groups of party members as well as the Litunga and Indunas.

Acting President Guy Scott has dismissed as lies suggestions that he is willing to support Defense and Justice Minister Edgar Lungu in 2015 presidential election.
PF National Chairperson Inonge Wina was recently quoted in the media as saying Dr. Scott is willing to support Mr. Lungu, who is the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) candidates in the 2015 presidential election, in his campaigns.
In an interview with Qfm News Dr. Scott has stated that Ms. Wina’s statement is just her own fabrication because nothing has changed.
Dr. Scott says he is waiting for the Supreme Court Judgment in which Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa has questioned Mr. Lungu’s ruling PF presidency.
He says it is not until the judgement is ruled will it be known who the legitimate PF president and party 2015 presidential candidate is.
Dr. Scott says he will campaign with who ever the legitimate PF president and presidential president will be after the judgement.
And Dr. Scott has also denied alleged insinuations that he does not care whether the ruling PF wins or not in the forthcoming presidential election.
He has wondered how true such an insinuation can be when he has spent nearing half of his life to work for and build the ruling PF in what it is today.
And the Zambian Voice says acting President Guy Scott has demonstrated that he was not a headless follower to late president Michael Sata.
Executive Director Chilufya Tayali says Dr. Scott has also shown that he is man of his own.
Mr. Tayali says his organization thinks that Dr. Scott is an honest man and that this can be attested to in how his conducted his debates in Parliament before he become acting republican President.
He says Zambian Voice is thus of the view that this is also what Dr. Scott is who also republican vice president and Lusaka Central Member of Parliament is doing currently while he leads the country through the power transition period.
The Zambian Voice Executive Director was speaking an in an interview with Qfm News.
About one hundred youths from different organizations in Mongu District of Western Province have called on their colleagues in the province to rally behind PF Presidential candidate Edgar Lungu in the fourth coming presidential By- elections.
Speaking on behalf of the youths in an interview in Mongu District today, Namakando Lilandwe said under the PF government Western Province has seen massive developmental projects such as road construction, creation of new districts and employment for youths.
Miss. Lilandwe added that the province has also seen the allocation of funds in the 2015 National Budget towards the construction of King Lewanika University in Mongu District and a Science Technical University in Nalolo District respectively.
She pointed out that during the PF government the youths witnessed a draft driven people’s constitution and an increase in the allocation of Youth Development Fund (YDF) which has benefited a lot of youths in the province.
Miss. Lilandwe emphasized that there was need for the projects and programs introduced by PF government to be completed in order for the people of Zambia to have a fair judgment in 2016.
She added that the youths have chosen to rally behind PF president Edgar Lungu for continuity despite different parties expressing interest to contest for presidency.
She has since urged all the youths in the Province and the nation as a whole to allow the PF government finish its five years mandate of delivering to the people and focus on the year 2016 for possible change.
Meanwhile Miss Lilandwe has further called on the youths to reflect and begin eyeing for key possible leadership positions for possible generation change.
