State House says there is no nothing sinister about President Sata’s decision to delegate Vice President Guy Scott to attend the US-Africa summit.

On Monday during a news conference, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema had questioned the presence of Dr Scott at the Washington D.C gathering when he is not allowed to act as President in the absence of President Sata.

Mr Hichilema said Zambia will not reap any benefits from the summit because of the alleged low caliber of delegates representing the country.

But State House Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations George Chellah said Mr Hichilema’s statement shows that the UPND leader is practicing politics of sarcasm.

He was speaking when he called in to the Red Hot Breakfast Show on Hot FM.
Mr Chellah said this is not the first time that Dr Scott was representing Zambia at an international for a saying Mr Hichilema should focus on the benefits that Zambia would accrue from the summit and not who is representing President Sata.

“What is clear is that Mr Hichilema is practicing politics of sarcasm. Maybe I should help bring him to speed about these issues. It is President Sata’s prerogative to delegate any one to represent him at international events and this is not the first time this is happening,” Mr Chellah said.

He added, “For me, if I was going to be clear and brief about this issue, obviously Mr Hichilema wants to practice his politics of sarcasm. What is obvious is that the President has the prerogative to at appoint whoever he wants to act firstly as well as represent him at various international fora, this matter of acting as President when the President is out of the country is not a new phenomenon.”

Mr Chellah said he expected Mr Hichilema as leader of the opposition was to give Zambians his expectations from the US-Africa summit as it will have an impact on Zambia.

Meanwhile, Vice President, Guy Scott, is confident that Zambia will greatly benefit from the United States of America -Africa leadership summit, being held in Washington DC.

Dr Scott said the summit which aims at promoting investment and trade between the two continents, will come up with commitments and measures that will impact positively on Africa and Zambia in particular.

The Vice President told ZNBC’s Mwila Nsofu that Zambia will take full advantage of the summit to rip maximum benefits from the gathering by wooing American investors and promoting increased trade between the US and Zambia.

US Commerce Secretary, Penny Pritzker, has said about USD $900million,in business deals, will be formally announced during the event.

Meanwhile, Dr Scott said he is impressed that at the summit African countries have been able to discuss and come to a consensus on various issues affecting the continent such climate change, HIV/AIDS and the Ebola virus.

And Commerce Minister Robert Sichinga said there is need to enhance infrastructure and power generation for Africa to maximize on on American efforts to promote trade and investment in Africa.

Five UPND carders arrested for idling and disorderly conduct acquitted

Five United Party for National Development (UPND) carders have been acquitted by the Lusaka Magistrate Court for idle and disorderly conduct likely to cause breach of the peace.

In this case the accused persons Joseph Muzonda,48 ,Patrick Ntalasha,28,Newton Chisuta,30, Lemmy Mukoba,29,and Pumulo Sililo,35 who are alleged to have conducted a demonstration along Addis Ababa road in June 2012 by blocking the road with stones, tyres and also urinating on the road.

The carders who appeared before Magistrate Lameck Ng’ambi had pleaded not guilty to the charge of idle and disorderly conduct likely to cause breach of the peace contrary to section 78(F) of the Penal Code and Cap 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

The prosecution evidence alleged that the carders had blocked the road with tyres and stones and traffic could not move adding that when police officers went to the scene and tried to reason with them they did not stop but instead their behaviour become worse.

And in their defence, all the accused persons denied urinating and blocking the road saying they only went to demonstrate peacefully but were beaten by the police officers when the Lusaka Province Police Commissioner arrived at the scene.

In passing sentence, Magistrate Ng’ambi said the evidence by an independent witness in the matter, a reporter from Muvi television Bruce Mwale who testified that he did not see anyone urinating on the road and that the police officers only started beating the party carders after the police commissioner arrived at the scene was a clear indication that the officers were acting upon instructions.

He acquitted the accused persons in a fully packed court room after finding that the prosecution did not prove their case beyond any reasonable doubt.

And speaking to journalists after his acquittal, one of the party carders, Joseph Muzonda said he was happy with the outcome of the judgment as he together with his co accused were just implicated in the matter.

Obama to announce $14 billion in U.S. corporate investments in Africa

21

obama-smile_1107663iPresident Barack Obama will announce on Tuesday that U.S. businesses have committed to investing $14 billion in construction, clean energy, banking, and information technology projects across Africa, a White House official said.

The announcement will occur at the U.S.-Africa Business Forum, part of a three-day Africa summit in Washington meant to showcase U.S. interest in improving trade and investment in the region.

“These investments will deepen U.S. economic engagement in Africa, fueling growth that will support broader African prosperity and emerging markets for US businesses, which will support jobs in both the United States and Africa,” the White House official said.

Obama will take part in a discussion with corporate chief executives and government leaders at the event, which will be attended by Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and former President Bill Clinton.

The business forum will allow dozens of African heads of state to mingle with U.S. and African executives, the official said. It will focus broadly on investment in finance, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and consumer goods.

More than 90 U.S. companies are slated to participate including Chevron Corp <CVX.N, Citigroup Inc, Ford Motor Co, General Electric Co, Lockheed Martin Corp, Marriott International Inc, Morgan Stanley and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. Several African companies were also expected to attend.

In a brief preview of Obama’s remarks, the White House did not give specifics on the nature of the business deals or identify which companies were involved.

“These agreements represent conclusive evidence that America is open for more business with Africa as the Continent’s economic ascent is just beginning,” Pritzker said in a statement.

“Each day, 250,000 Americans go to work in jobs supported by exports to Africa and these deals will lead to increased prosperity on both sides of the Atlantic in the months ahead,” she said.

The Obama administration has billed the summit as the first of its kind, but it comes long after Africa gatherings hosted in recent years by China, India, Japan and Europe, suggesting the United States is largely playing a game of catch-up for access to a market in several growing industries.

Three Batoka Sky guards strangled to death

Batoka-Sky-Zambia-Victoria

Suspected criminals in Livingstone have strangled three security guards to death at Batoka Sky and blew a safe with dynamite before getting away with K48,000 cash.

Engineer Zulu aged 35 of Linda Compound, Masiliso Sikombwa 35 of Dambwa Site and Service and Adam Siateba of Linda Compound, all working for Panorama Security were strangled with sisal ropes between 01:00 hours and 02:00 hours this morning.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda confirmed the development to ZANIS in Livingstone today.

Ms Chikwanda said the victims were found tied up with sisal ropes around their necks, at Batoka Sky gate.
“Unfortunately, the trio were alone at the Batoka Sky premises when the incident occurred and the suspects are on the run,” she said.

Ms Chikwanda said one of the victims did not die at the crime scene but was found struggling to breathe and rushed to the Livingstone General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

She said the victims were also found with cuts on their bodies but it is not known what weapons the suspected criminals used to assault the victims.

Police have since instituted investigations into the matter and Batoka Sky owner, Daan Brinks has been advised not to engage cheap labour but employ armed security officers who can defend themselves while on duty.

Batoka Sky is part of Livingstone’s Adventure Group of Companies.

UPND is deceived by its hunger for power – Lungu

MMD National Secretary Muhabi Lungu
MMD National Secretary Muhabi Lungu

The opposition Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD) has observed that the United Party for National Development’s hunger for power is deceiving it to start believing that it is in State House already.

The MMD National Secretary Muhabi Lungu has charged that his party is of the view that the UPND would make a worse governing party the country has ever had , even worse than the ruling PF.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka this morning, Mr. Lungu has also observed that statistical data of elections since 2001 clearly shows that the UPND is on a path of decline.

Mr. Lungu explains that the UPND in 2001 got 27 percent of the total votes, in 2006 they got 25 percent, in 2008 they got 20 percent and recently in 2011 they managed to get 18 percent of the total votes which shows that they are declining.

He adds that the path to State House entails an upward swing of not less than 20 percentage points after a decline of 9 points which would be unprecedented in Zambia’s history.

Mr. Lungu says this upward swing, which he says is unbelievable swing, is put in context when one considers that the UPND failed to even get 5 percent of the vote in four out of the nine province in 2011 namely Copperbelt, Eastern, Luapula and Northern Provinces.

He wonders why the UPND has thus continued to using underhand methods to compromise the MMD members and enticing them to join them when the UPND Leader has time and again said the MMD is a dying party.

Meanwhile, confusion erupted at the MMD secretariat when former MMD Task Force Chairman Tomson Maimisa appeared with statements and attempted to start giving the press before some MMD officials pounced on him.

Mr. Maimisa appeared at the scene to demand that the MMD apologize to Home Affairs Deputy Minister Nickson Chilangwa for mocking him and using his disability as a campaign tool.

Mr. Maimisa states that if the MMD does not apologize for the remarks against Mr. Chilangwa and all the disabled people in the country within 24 hours, he will personally mobilize the disabled people and demonstrate at the MMD secretariat.

Kabungo Yanick Mulumba, a resident of Maamba, Zambia, a graduate of St. Canisius High School, and now a senior at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, is one of forty undergraduate students accepted into the 2014 Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) Internship Program, which provides participants with a challenging summer research experience in a cutting-edge stem cell science laboratory.

Mulumba is spending ten weeks, from June 9 to August 15, in the Harvard University Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology laboratory of HSCI Principal Faculty member Chad Cowan, PhD, known for his research on genetic disease modeling. Mulumba’s project this summer is to engineer transplantable white blood cells that don’t attack the body’s own cells when used for adoptive immunotherapy—a treatment that uses biological substances to boost a patient’s immune system.

“The internship has enhanced my critical thinking through troubleshooting and planning of experiments,” Mulumba said. “I’ve also been exposed to leaders in academia and industry who have helped me learn how to combine my interests in medicine, research, and healthcare management.”

Over the course of the program, interns participate in a stem cell seminar series, a career pathways presentation, and a weekly stem cell companion course. They present their summer research findings, both orally and in poster format, at an end-of-program symposium.

“This program represents an exciting opportunity for undergraduates to gain hands-on experience in stem cell research while working in an HSCI laboratory under the supervision of an experienced researcher,” said HSCI Internship Program co-director M. William Lensch, PhD.

The Harvard Stem Cell Institute gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the following sponsors for the 2014 HSCI Internship Program: Biogen Idec, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc., EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Regenerative Medicine, Loughborough University (UK), Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

JUSTICE Minister Wynter Kabimba has said that President Michael Sata is very well and discharging his duties very well.

Responding to question on the concerns by opposition regarding the health of the head of State, Mr Kabimba said that concerns by the opposition about the health of President Michael Sata are malicious and should be treated with contempt by all well-meaning Zambians.

Mr Kabimba said even in Parliament, Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini had often curtailed the debate and the public also understood that the opposition was being malicious.

“Since when did they show concern about the President? This is a man they have not accepted that he beat them to an election in 2011. This is a man they vilified,” Mr Kabimba said.

“He has proven them all wrong. Instead of hanging their heads in shame, they have to find another route of trying to discredit the man.”

Mr Kabimba said the so-called concern from the opposition political parties about the President’s health was malicious and being expressed in bad faith, not with the interest of the nation at heart.

“The President is very well and discharging his duties very well. This country is developing under his tutelage at an unprecedented level. And I can tell you that he’s winning the election again in 2016,” Mr Kabimba said.

52 Buffaloes die in stampede in Kafue National Park

20

Buffaloes

In what seems like a biannual event, fifty two (52) buffaloes have died in a stampede in the Kafue National Park in Itezhi Tezhi district in central province.

ZANIS staffer Frederick Mwansa reports that the carcasses of buffaloes were discovered by Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) officers during their tour along the Musa River in the southern part of the Kafue National Park.

Mwansa reports that when contacted Itezhi Tezhi district commissioner George Sichula confirmed the development adding that the sad development took place last Friday night.

“ 52 buffaloes were found dead in the Kafue National Park along Musa River. They are believed to have died in a stampede and ZAWA officers are investigation the cause of the stampede” Mr. Sichula said.

This is the third time a huge number of buffaloes have died in similar manner at the same place.

And most of the carcasses which were floating in the Musa River have since been scavenged by some local people.

In September 2009, 35 buffaloes died at the same area and ZAWA attributed the stampede to lions that were chasing the buffaloes
In August 2012 another 81 buffaloes died in a similar manner at the same river In the Kafue national park.

The wild animals usually move in herds of about one thousand and when they are disturbed they run in the same direction causing stampede.

Meanwhile a police officer based at Itezhi Tezhi police station is feared dead after boat in which he was travelling capsized on Lake Itezhi Tezhi.

Itezhi Tezhi District Commissioner George Sichula has confirmed the incidence adding that the development occurred on Saturday.

Mr. Sichula who named the missing police officer as Maxwell Madubeko said the boat reportedly capsized following huge waves and that five people survived the accident and managed to swim to the shore.

‘As of yesterday the rescue team was still looking for the missing police officer who was a trained coxswain” Mr. Sichula said.

Kabimba is insulting Zambians – Father Bwalya

Alliance for Better Zambia president Father Frank Bwalya blows a whistle against the government's refusal to release the Zambian draft constitution
Alliance for Better Zambia president Father Frank Bwalya blows a whistle against the government’s refusal to release the Zambian draft constitution

The opposition Alliance for a Better Zambia (ABZ) Leader Father Frank Bwalya has described the statement by Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba that educated people and the elite are trying to hijack the constitution making process as an insult to the people of Zambia.

And the ABZ President has charged that Mr. Kabimba needs to know that the only cure for the current constitution impasse lies in PF respecting the will of the people as captured by the Technical Committee on drafting the new Republic Constitution.

Father Bwalya has told QFM News in a telephone interview that the statement by Mr. Kabimba should be dismissed with the contempt and scorn it deserves.

Father Bwalya says even illiterate Zambians know that the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) promised to deliver a people driven constitution in 90 days of which they have lamentably failed to honor.

Father Bwalya says the people of Zambia are aware that the PF condemned the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) for wasting public resources on the National Constitution Conference (NCC) and for disregarding the wishes of the people in the constitution making process.

He notes that Zambians know that PF promise to deliver a people driven constitution in a cost effective and expedient manner.

Father Bwalya has also accused the government of allegedly trying to drive a wedge between the people who have been demanding for a people driven constitution and stakeholders who have been championing the cause of the people.

He says the people know very well that it is the PF themselves who have hijacked the constitution making process in a very dull manner characterized by cheap lies such as losing the final report of the Technical Committee let alone describing demands for a people driven constitution as yapping.
