Chinese ambassador to Zambia Zhou Yuxiao has called on the Zambian government to invest in science and technology so as to speed up development in the country.

Speaking in lusaka at the official launch of the Huawei road show Mr Yuxiao said the country needs to develop its science and technology as it is the only way the country will be able to catch up with other nations in developing.

He said the country does not need copper only to develop but ICT can open doors to other development perspectives adding that with copper and a well developed ICT the country could open new possibilities.

He observed that Zambia is the fourth largest producer of copper in the world but has nothing to show for it as almost all the copper produced in the country is exported as raw material while with a well developed technology the country can open new possibilities by exporting finished products from its copper and other minerals that the country has in abundance.

He further said with the country investing science and technology it would be easy for the country to process its copper and other minerals that the country is endowed with hence government should put more attention to developing the science and technology sector of the country.

He also said government can only ignore the development of ICT at it owen peril; “saying in this information age you can not do without ICT.”

And Minister of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications Yamfwa Mukanga said government was aware of the importance ICT in developing the country.

Mr Mukanga said “By harnessing this technology – and encouraging others to do so – my government knows that it will help Zambia achieve the middle-income status by 2030.

“And that in turn will bring prosperity, employment and transform the quality of life for all citizens. We need to turn these possibilities into reality in order to; we need to be ahead of the game.

“Technology is changing fast, we need to be ahead of it; we need to be faster than it. For this reason it is vital that we all learn from the latest technology trend brought to us by Huawei.”

The theme of the roadshow at the Intercontinental Hotel in Lusaka is “Connected Possibilities” and the truck features some of the latest ICT equipment and ideas that will enable Zambia to stay at the forefront of telecommunications developments.

Mweene wins first PSL title

Kennedy Mweene is celebrating his first South Africa PSL league title while there was pain for Joseph Musonda and Co.

Mweene, who was between the posts on Tuesday night, picked up his first league title after ten years in the PSL after keeping a cleansheet for Mamelodi Sundowns who beat SuperSport United 3-0 on Tuesday evening.

Sundowns win saw them reach an unassailable 64 points from 29 matches with a game to spare while 2012/2013 champions Kaizer Chiefs will have to settle for second place.

This is Mweene’s first season at Sundowns after nine seasons at Free State Stars.

Meanwhile, there was heartbreak down in Durban at Golden Arrows where Joseph Musonda witnessed from the bench as his club was demoted after losing 1-0 away in their derby at Amazulu.

Christopher Katongo played the full 90 minute while Festus Mbewe was substituted in the 84th minute.

Arrows finish the season bottom in 16th place as the curtain came down on the Durban side after 14 years of non-stop stay in the SA PSL.

Chilumba slams Power’s critics

Tennant Chilumba has slammed critics ascertains that league leaders Power Dynamos are running out of steam after a fiery start to the 2014 FAZ Super Division season.

Power have now gone two games without a win after picking up two straight away draws after a flying start that saw them win all their opening five games.

Despite Power’s recent blip, they remain three points ahead of the table on 17 points.

Chilumba insisted that the draw’s against third placed Zesco United where they finished 0-0 and second from bottom Roan United where they rallied to finish 1-1 were both fair results against teams that come with their own obvious dynamics after six rounds of games played.

“For me people who are talking about those things are just being negative in football,” Chilumba said.

“I give credit to the boys they have been working hard and I am happy with those two draw games; Zesco are behind us on the table and we managed to get a point away from home and they wanted to get to the top of the table.

“And if you look at Roan they were wounded and wanted to get out of the bottom so we managed to get a draw.”

UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema has advised President Michael Sata to seriously consider the proposal to hold an interparty dialogue meeting with opposition leaders on the constitution.

Mr. Hichilema says this is especially that as Head of State, President Sata has an obligation to the Zambian people to deliver a new constitution.

He says by not taking the opportunity to meet with the opposition political party leaders to discuss the issue of the constitution, President Sata will be demonstrating that he is a wrong person to hold the highest office in the land.

Mr Hichilema has told Qfm News in a telephone interview that by so doing, President Sata will also be indicating to the Zambian people that he does not want to continue being the country’s Head of State.

The UPND leader states that President Sata should also bear in mind that the holding of a meeting of political leaders is long overdue and should not be delayed any further.

Mr Hishilema says failure by the President to meet with opposition leaders over the constitution should be reason enough for the people of Zambia to vote the Patriotic Front out of office in 2016.

He says this is because the issue of the constitution is not for the opposition alone but a matter of national interest.

Communications Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has observed that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) holds the key to Zambia’s prosperity.
Mr. Mukanga says by harnessing technology in the country, the Patriotic Front (PF) government is also aware of how fast technology will help Zambia attain middle income status by 2030.

He says this is why it is important for the country to turn possibilities that technology can bring about into reality, the more reason it is further necessary for the country to learn from the latest technology trends from other advanced countries.

Mr. Mukanga was speaking this morning when Chinese ICT Company Huawei launched its Demo Truck Road show to showcase its ICT solutions in Lusaka.

And Mukanga has observed that by virtue of Huawei being one of the world’s leading ICT solution providers, government is honored to have its products showcased in the country as such a platform provides an opportunity for communication and exchange of ideas of how ICT can benefit Zambia.

And speaking earlier, Chinese Ambassador Zhou Yuxiao has observed that Zambia has the potential to do away with over reliance on mining to further develop.

Mr. Yuxiao says like other developed countries, Zambia can use Technology to foster its economic growth.

Zambia Army Deputy Commander Topply Lubaya has threatened to have the managers of a named contraction company, who were engaged to construct and install equipment in the maternity ward at the Garrison camp hospital in Arakan Barracks, arrested.

Major General Lubaya said it was unacceptable that a resuscitator machine has never functioned since it was installed at the maternity ward.

A resuscitator is a cardio-pulmonary machine that helps restore a life of a critically ill patient.

This came to light today when General Lubaya inspected the maternity ward and the pharmacy wing at the Garrison camp hospital to familiarize himself with the operations of the hospital.

This was after a donation of five wheel chairs presented to the Garrison camp hospital by Maluba Rotary Club.

“It is unacceptable that this machine has never worked when huge sums of money were spent. Let us get to the root cause of that or else I will cause them to be arrested for failing to install it,” he said.

He said he was not aware that the camp hospital was facing such a challenge.

He was however happy that other pieces of machinery such as the oxygen cylinders were working at full capacity.

General Lubaya said the Garrison camp hospital has a catchment of 20,000 people in the surrounding Chilenje, Kabwata, Libala South and Woodlands suburb residential areas around it hence the need for the resuscitator to be functional to save lives.

He said expectant mothers and those who have given birth should not always be referred to the University Teaching Hospital.

Zambia Army Chief of Medical Services Brigadier General Abraham Malaya said the Garrison camp hospital also needs a standby generator to cushion the impact when there is an interruption of electricity supply at the institution.

General Malaya however said the institution was fully stocked with various medicines including anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs).

Meanwhile, Zambia Army Deputy Commander Topply Lubaya has expressed gratitude that charity institutions were reversing the myth that defense forces do not need assistance because they were always self sustaining.

Major General Lubaya said the Zambia army, just like any other defense wing, is vulnerable and needs assistance from well wishers.

He said doors of the Zambia army were always open for any institution wishing to render assistance.

He said this when he received a donation of five wheelchairs that were presented to the Garrison camp hospital in the Arakan Barracks from Maluba Rotary Club.

Maj. Gen. Lubaya also inspected the wards and the pharmacy at the institution to familiarize himself with the operations of the hospital

He commended Maluba Rotary Club for the gesture and said the donation would greatly help in improving the health services at the Garrison camp hospital.

He has since challenged other institutions to emulate the Maluba Rotary Club by demonstrating their social corporate responsibilities.

And Maluba Rotary Club president Yashvant Patel disclosed that over 140 wheelchairs would be distributed to vulnerable institutions such as the Garrison Camp hospital

Mr. Patel further said U$S1 billion and an undisclosed additional amount of money have been sourced from the Melinda Gates Foundation to end polio by 2018.

He said polio was claiming many lives not only in Zambia but world over.

Mr. Patel said the Rotary Club’s prudent use of financial resources had attracted more sponsorship for the development of community projects.

He said the Zambia Air Force and the Zambia National Service would also benefit from the wheelchairs in an effort to improve quality health care services at health institutions in defense forces.

Lubambo: Zambia U20 will qualify

Zambia Under-20 captain Lubambo Musonda says Zambia will qualify to the Senegal 2015 CAF Under-20 Youth Championship.

Zambia this weekend begins their campaign for a place at next year’s Africa Youth Championship with a second round, first leg qualifying match against Mozambique in Maputo.

Musonda said Zambia wants to qualify to the Youth Africa Cup to compensate for the team’s failure at the 2013 Cosafa Cup Youth Championship in South Africa.

“Definitely we will qualify to the Africa championships because we know Zambia is a powerhouse in Southern Africa. We want to qualify the failure in the Cosafa Cup we want to make it,” said the talented winger.

Musonda said Zambia is confident of getting a good result in Mozambique this weekend.
The team leaves for Maputo on Thursday.

“We are all confident everyone is putting in their best in training. We are very confident of getting a good result. We watched them at the Cosafa Cup in Lesotho and they have a strong team,” Lubambo said.

Zambia last participated at the CAF Under-20 Youth Championship in 2007.

Goods worth undisclosed amount of money were gutted this morning when fire swept through a multi-million Kwacha building complex in Kitwe town housing a number of shops including Carnival Furnishers.

The building complex known as Yemba, situated along Matuka Avenue next to Barclays Bank and opposite Kitwe Main Post Office in the central business district (CBD) went up in flames in the early hours of the morning gutting a number of merchandise.

Among the severely affected shops were Carnival Furnishers and Yamaje Trading, stocking a range of various imported household goods such as home furniture, electrical appliances and clothes which were reduced to rubble.

On the scene around 07:45 hours, some of the shop owners were found watching haplessly as a combined team of fire-brigade from the Kitwe City Council, Mopani Copper Mines and the Copperbelt Energy Corporation struggled to put off the inferno that was now fast spreading to Barclays Bank.

Kitwe District Commissioner Elias Kamanga and Kitwe City Council chief Fire Officer, Stanley Sichivula who were spotted on the scene of fire, said they suspected an electrical faulty in one of the shops sparked the inferno which later spread to other shops within the complex.

Yemba building complex owner, Beatrice Sichizya who could not help it but to cry said she received a phone call around 06:00 hours informing her about the fire.

The distressed Ms Sichizya said when she got to the building complex they noticed smoke emerging from the ceiling in the roof of Yamaje Trading but could not see the fire itself until moments later when fire flames became visible.

“That is how we called the police and the fire-brigade from Kitwe City Council which came but unfortunately was not sufficient to contain the inferno and this was how they called for reinforcement,” Ms Sichizya said amid sobs.

And confusion characterized the CBD as unscrupulous individuals who had besieged the scene of the fire incidence tried to take advantage of the burning building to loot some goods.

Alert police in full riot gear fired teargas canister causing commotion around town with people scampering in different direction upon being choked.

Nearly all the shops along Matuka Avenue were kept closed while offices were immediately deserted as the teargas canister filtered through in the surrounding buildings brining business to virtue standstill.

Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge inspected the gutted shops soon after the fire brigade contained the inferno around 09:00 hours.

Mr Musenge was happy with the quick response by the fire brigade team saying had they delayed, many other properties including Barclays Bank could have been gutted.

Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa said the fire completely gutted Yamaje Trading while Carnival Furnishers was partially destroyed.

Ms Kasosa said the value of goods destroyed was not known and that the exact cause of fire was yet to be established as investigations were still underway.

PF calls on old members to accept new comers

2

The Lusaka Province Patriotic Front (PF) Executive has called on its district and constituency officials in the province to accept and work closely with defectors if
the party is to grow strong.

The Provincial PF executive, which comprised the Provincial Secretary, Horace Longwe, Chairlady, Margret Mumba, youth Chairman, Kennedy Kamba, youth Information and Publicity Secretary, Alickson Nkhoma, and Maximo Kankombe, made the call when they addressed the Luangwa District and Constituency PF officials at the Civic Centre over the weekend.
The committee advised party leaders at district level not to segregate anyone from another political party who has come to join them.

Provincial Secretary, Horace Longwe, who was the delegation leader, said the PF was a party for the people and should welcome anyone that joins them in working for the people.

Mr Longwe further called on the party officials to be working closely with their area Member of Parliament if development is to be enhanced at constituency and district levels.

And Provincial Youth Chairman, Kennedy Kamba, warned that the PF will not tolerate any leader who is not utilising his or her position in mobilising and strengthening the party.

Mr Kamba said the PF wants more members, hence the need for the district and constituency officials to work hand in hand with their PF Members of Parliament in telling the people what the PF
Government has done and what it intends to do for them.

He said the PF will not tolerate any leader or official who is not performing because President Sata is a person who wants to work for the people in alleviating poverty, hence the need for those surrounding him to be seen working.

Speaking at the same meeting, Luangwa District Acting PF Chairperson, Lackson Membe, thanked President Sata and the PF Government for fulfilling the campaign promises made to the people of Luangwa and the country at large.

Mr Membe, who is also Luangwa District Council Vice Chairman, said since the PF Government came into power, the district has not been left behind in terms of development as can be seen in the upgrading of the Luangwa D145 road to bituminous standard, completion of the Day Secondary School and provision of two ambulances among many other developments going on in the area.

Meanwhile area Member of Parliament, Patrick Ngoma, thanked the provincial team for bringing unity between him and party officials in the district.

Mr Ngoma said he was finding it difficult to work because some senior party district officials were shunning him for reasons best known to themselves.

He said that it was his hope and wish that the coming of the provincial officials will make a difference in party organisation at district level.

Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia happy with PF economic strides

7

The Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ) is happy with the economic strides made by the PF government.

FFTUZ Labour Day envoy to Nchelenge District in Luapula Province, Maybin Simukoko, says generally the 2013 real Gross Domestic Products (GDP) figures are impressive and rose compared to 2012.

Mr Simukoko noted that government adjusted the minimum wage upwards in a bid to improve the conditions of service and bring decency to workers.

He said though the FFTUZ noted with pleasure some of the economic gains that the PF government has recorded the need for the country to consolidate the manufacturing industry cannot be overlooked.

Speaking on Thursday in Nchelenge during the Labour Celebrations, Mr Simukoko said the manufacturing industry has the potential to employ millions of Zambians and subsequently grow the economy.

He further said producing processed products for both the local and international markets will help the country raise money for infrastructure and other developmental programmes which are crucial for a sustainable economy.

The union representative added that the government must also endeavour and invest in research and development to ascertain products and services that will compete favourably on the global market.

Meanwhile, Mr Simukoko has called for strong government commitments towards the delivery of low inflation rates and a strong financial sector.

Mr Simukoko said this will ensure the expansion of access to finances especially by individuals and the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SMEs).

He noted that inflation remains in single digit at 7.7 per cent but government must enhance the corporate governance systems in order to stabilize the Kwacha against major currencies such as the Dollar.

Mr Simukoko further noted that the accessibility of financial services continue to be a challenge especially to individuals and SMEs but was quick to say that a significant progress has been to improve the availability and accessibility of these services.

He added that the government move to provide financial resources through the Development Bank of Zambia (DBZ) and the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) initiative has tremendously improved the situation.

And the FFTUZ has urged the government to guard against the peace that the country has enjoyed for the 50 years of political independence.

Mr Simukoko said Zambia has worked hard to maintain the peace but noted that unemployment among the youths is a threat to national stability.

He observed that some people have developed a bad culture of lies and violence that threatens to disturb the peace the nation has enjoyed since independence and appealed to relevant authorities to put a stop to it.

Mr Simukoko further said he was optimistic that the PF government would rise above petty politics and surprise the Zambian people by handing them the constitution.

PF bent on dividing Bembas – Chanda

24

The Open Society Foundation (OSF) says the PF Government is bent on dividing the Bemba-speaking people by directly fighting paramount Chief Chitimukulu designate Henry Kanyanta Sosala.

OSF Executive Director, Sunday Chanda, told QFM News in an interview that it is a statement of fact that the Bemba-speaking people provided a strong base for the PF, but that this base has been despised with the highest contempt possible.

Mr. Chanda said Zambians and the Bemba speaking people wish to know why the PF government is fighting their paramount chief.

He said that by fighting the Chitimukulu designate, government is in fact fighting the Bemba speaking people.

Mr. Chanda added that the ruling party is determined to dislodge Kasama central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mwamba for resigning from government in protest over the stalemate between the government and the Bemba royal establishment over the installation of the Chitimukulu.

Mr. Chanda has called on Government to let go of the Chitimukulu throne and stop dividing the Bemba-speaking people.

Mr. Chanda added that PF will be pushing their luck too far with Kasama Central parliamentary seat by creating a by-election.

A one year baby died after being accidentally run over by a vehicle while at church in Kitwe last Saturday.

The baby was run over within the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church premises in Ipusukilo Township by a Fan Cargo vehicle which had been parked there.

The toddler, left its parents side while the service was in progress and went to play behind the vehicle which was within the church premises.

Without noticing the toddler, the driver, Peter Ndonji, 30,of Ipusukilo Township started reversing the vehicle and accidentally ran over the baby. The baby sustained head injuries and died on the spot.

Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa appealed tp parents to take care of their children.

“Like I have said before, my appeal to parents and guardians is that they need to be more caring when it comes to securing the safety of little ones because here is one-year-six months-old baby who is excited about walking and is let free without the parent keeping an eye on it,” Ms Kasosa said.
