PATRIOTIC Front (PF) secretary-general Wynter Kabimba has appealed to Zambians not to lose hope as the party will deliver on its promises.

Mr Kabimba said the coming of the PF to power was just the first step in restoring dignity to Zambians.

He was speaking in an interview on Monday.

“We are conscious of the challenges the Zambian people are facing. Our appeal is that they must not lose heart now because they have come a long way,” Mr Kabimba said.

Mr Kabimba said the PF will not disappoint the Zambians but will deliver on all its promises.

“Our members have remained faithful for 10 years and the PF will not let anyone down. We have just come into power,” he said.

Mr Kabimba also appealed to the opposition to co-operate with the government, as it tries to make the economy better and create jobs.

“Anyone who means well for this country will co-operate with this government, so that it delivers development to everyone,” he said.

Mr Kabimba said the PF under the leadership of President Sata is offering selfless service to people.

“The redemption of this country lies in the PF and I call upon everyone to support this cause,” he said.

And Mr Kabimba said the PF runs an all-inclusive government, which is why it embraces the opposition.

He said at no time has the PF tried to buy off the opposition.

“Chipimo and Nawakwi are not singing praises for Sata. They criticise Government and do so responsibly,” he said.

Sata calls for fresh start with traditional chiefs

THREE chiefs from Petauke in Eastern Province led by Chieftainess Mwanjawanthu, Chief Sandwe and Chief Mumbi called on President Sata at State House

PRESIDENT Sata has urged traditional leaders to forget the differences they had with the Patriotic Front (PF) when it was in the opposition and make a fresh start.

Mr Sata says chiefs are an important component of development and they should forget what transpired in the past, especially during election campaigns.

The President said this at State House yesterday when he met three chiefs and five indunas from Petauke in Eastern Province.

This is according to a statement released by the President’s special assistant for press and public relations George Chellah.

The traditional rulers, who held a closed-door meeting with the head of State, are Chieftainess Mwanjabantu and chiefs Mumbi and Sandwe.

Mr Sata, who was flanked by Minister of Home Affairs Edgar Lungu, who is also acting as Minister of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, and Energy permanent secretary George Zulu, assured the chiefs of his Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable distribution of resources in developing the country.

“We are greatly humbled that you requested to pay us a visit. This is how it should be. We must forget what transpired during the campaigns and make a fresh start,” President Sata said.

The President said Government is keen to learn from traditional leaders, the specific areas of developmental needs, now that preparations for the 2013 budget have reached an advanced stage.

“I will instruct Eastern Province Minister Charles Banda to take time and visit all chiefdoms in the region, so that we can have first-hand information on the problems you are experiencing.

“We are Africans and we need to respect and uphold this dignified institution of chieftaincy,” President Sata said.

He urged traditional leaders to continue safeguarding and promoting the interests of their subjects.

Mr Sata said chiefs are an essential component in governance, adding that they (traditional leaders) should represent the interests of their subjects.

During the same meeting, the traditional leaders commended the President for granting them an opportunity to engage him on various matters relating to their chiefdoms.

The chiefs assured President Sata that they will continue to pray for his administration to enable him preside over the affairs of this country in peace and harmony.

They also expressed happiness with President Sata’s decision to establish the Ministry of Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, which they said underscores his commitment and desire to work with traditional leaders in national development.

The traditional leaders also thanked the President for the road works carried out in some chiefdoms such as Chief Sandwe’s area and requested him to ensure Government constructs more schools, hospitals and provides electricity.

MMD to settle K400m debt owed the Registrar of Societies

16

THE MMD is today expected to pay the K400 million it owes the Registrar of Societies in unpaid statutory fees.

Chief Registrar of Societies Clement Andeleki, who confirmed the development in an interview in Lusaka on Monday, said the MMD has decided to pay the outstanding debt at on go, not in the four instalments of K100 million it had earlier agreed on with Mr Andeleki.

Mr Andeleki said he is happy that the opposition party has resolved to settle the statutory debt this week.

“I want to confirm that the MMD has resolved to pay all the money it owes the Government in full. Last week, the MMD national secretary Richard Kachingwe called me and did indicate that the party will pay the K400 million in full.

“I want to state that this is what is expected of all registered societies and political parties. All registered societies should know that this is the same money which is being used to develop the country,” he said.

Mr Andeleki commended the MMD and other political parties that are supplementing Government efforts to develop the country by meeting their statutory obligations.

He also warned that he will this week swing into action and deregister organisations that still owe the government statutory fees.

“I would like to warn organisations and political parties that still owe the government statutory obligations that they will soon be deregistered.

“My officers will this week be on the ground to carry out random inspections and those who will be found wanting will be deregistered,” Mr Andeleki said.

On March 14, 2012, the MMD was de-registered by the Registrar of Societies for non-compliance to the Societies Act.

However, on June 25, 2012, the Lusaka High Court threw out the application by Mr Andeleki to de-register the party for non-payment of annual returns amounting to K390 million.

CSCC wants Christian nation declaration abandoned

53

The Civil Society Constitution Coalition (CSCC) has backed calls to have the Christian nation declaration in the preamble of the Republican Constitution removed.

CSCC officer says the clause is highly discriminatory to other religions in the country.

Mr. Ngalande has pointed out that in order for all Zambians to enjoy equal status with regards to religion affiliation; it is imminent that the clause is discarded.

Various stakeholders have expressed mixed feelings on the clause with some calling for its removal while others want it to be maintained.

And the Coalition has expressed happiness that economic rights under the bill of rights have been adequately covered.

They have since recommended that a 50/50 system be adopted with regards to decision making positions.

Late former President Dr Fredrick Chiluba a staunch believer declared Zambia a Christian nation.

Southampton have agreed terms over the transfer of Zambian striker Emmanuel Mayuka from Swiss Super League side BSC Young Boys.

The 21-year-old will move to St Mary’s for an undisclosed fee having agreed a five-year deal to keep him at the Club until the summer of 2017.

Mayuka underwent a successful medical earlier on Tuesday and will be allocated the number 24 shirt once his move is complete.

The Zambia international has already been granted a work permit by the Home Office and Saints are now awaiting entry clearance for the deal to be fully ratified, which is expected to happen before the end of this week.

Should the formalities be resolved as anticipated, Mayuka will link up with his new team ahead of Sunday’s Barclays Premier League home fixture against Manchester United.

“Emmanuel is a lightning-quick striker who I am sure will excite the fans,” First Team Manager Nigel Adkins said of the Club’s fifth summer signing.

“He is only 21 years old but already has a great deal of experience, notably so at international level.

“He will bring something different to the group that we already have here at Southampton, and I look forward to seeing him pull on our shirt for the first time.”

Government advised to focus on addressing challenges rather than ranting and reacting to every criticism

13
SACCORD Information Officer Obby Chibuluma
SACCORD Information Officer Obby Chibuluma

The Southern African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has noted with sadness that the country risks losing its peaceful status if the current crop of political leaders do not stop acting and behaving irresponsibly just for the sake of maintaining political power.

SACCORD information officer Obby Chibuluma has said that while politicians must ensure that they do not lose power and support, their supreme responsibility is to ensure that while holding those privileged positions, they act to unite those they lead.

Mr. Chibuluma said that it was surprising that political leaders, especially those in government who should have attempted to be role models had equally fallen for divisive politics.

He said that Government needs to focus most of its energy in addressing the challenges faced by the country rather than ranting and reacting to every criticism from those who are opposed to their style of governance.

Mr. Chibuluma told QFM in a statement that it is unfortunate that SACCORD sees the statements by those in government, calling opposition leaders and their supporters as being bitter and full of hate as in bad taste and lacking substance.

He said that as a government that was elected to bring change, the PF needs to realise that it is accountable to the people adding that the grounds on which these people voted for need to be fulfilled.

Mr. Chibuluma said that the PF should offer appropriate answers to what they are doing because the Zambians deserve an explanation and the people have the right to criticize if they think things are not going well.

He noted that this was time to create a broad and strategic coalition with the people of Zambia in order to develop the country instead of engaging in actions that are scary to outsiders and potential investors.

Mr. Chibuluma stated that while politicians are fighting for political power, it is the ordinary Zambian out there who is suffering as a result of not receiving services from government because officials are too busy fighting political battles and failing to direct policy

Ex-Kitwe Mayor Cosmas Bwalya has written Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili urging government to take urgent remedial measures aimed at saving the dilapidated Kitwe Playing Fields (KPF) from total destruction.

KPF, once a beautiful sports complex, houses Garden Park Stadium which as two football pitches, a rugby field, a tennis court and a gym.

In a letter dated 27 August,2012, Bwalya bemoaned the current poor state of KPF describing it as a sorry sight.

“I wish to draw your attention to KPF in Kitwe which as been neglected for a long time and has been vandalised. The part of the boundary wall has collapsed and people from Kamitondo Township are now walking through the football and rugby fields to go to Parklands and a foot path has formed,” the letter read.

“It is saddening to see such assets being neglected and going to waste in such a manner and in a country that is striving so much to put its name on the world map of sports in various disciplines.” Bwalya stated.

He also appealed to Kitwe Mayor Chileshe Bweupe and area Member of Parliament Luxon Kazabu to ensure that KPF is revamped.

“As you are no doubt aware, the infrastructure at KPF has been extensively damaged and vandalised. I am appealing to Kitwe Mayor Chileshe Bweupe and the area MP to take urgent remedial section to save the complex from total destruction and also caution and draw the attention of the general and public to safeguard such sporting facilities for the benefit of their children and future generations,” Bwalya added.

While the rugby field was recently revived at KPF, the tennis court is non functional and club houses are not inhabitable.

Government distances itself from the search conducted at UPND headquarters

68
Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Ngosa Simbyakula
Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Ngosa Simbyakula

Government has disassociated itself from the Police action to raid United Party for National Development -UPND- head quarters in Lusaka.

Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Ngosa Simbyakula says police are professionals and government does not interfere in their operations.

Dr Simbyakula told journalists in Lusaka that Police make their own professional assessment according to their training.

He said this in response to questions from journalists who wanted to know if government issued instructions to Police to search the UPND secretariat.

Police this morning besieged the UPND Secretariat in Lusaka’s Rhodes Park area with a search warrant and sealed off Lagos Road as they looked for seditious materials.

Armed police officers kept vigil outside while others in plain clothes conducted the search which started about 09:20 hours Tuesday morning.

According to a search warrant obtained by ZNBC News, Police were looking for seditious materials at the UPND Secretariat.

UPND Vice President Richard Kapita, Secretary General Winstone Chibwe and lawyer Keith Mweemba were also at the Secretariat.

But the UPND officials at the scene were also very cautious and suspicious as they searched police officers before letting them onto the premises.

They did the search to prevent possibilities of anyone from planting incriminating evidence at the premises.
The search ended this afternoon around 12:00hrs.

Dauglous Syakalima the senior advisor to UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says the party is happy that the search is over.

He says police did not find any seditious material and that his party will not be intimidated.

Mr. Syakalima says the UPND will hold discussions with its lawyers before chatting the way forward.

And police assistant spokesperson Rae Hamoonga says police will issue a statement on the matter.

On Monday this week, an attempt by police to search the UPND secretariat was thwarted by party officials and their lawyers who claimed police had a defective search warrant.

Another statement from GBM targeted at HH

Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba
Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba

Defence Minister, Geoffrey Mwamba has released another statement attacking United party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema. According to the Statement, Mr Mwamba claims that Prof Clive Chirwa has vindicated PF’s views on HH.

Below is the full statement.

MEDIA STATEMENT
28 August 2012

Prof. Chirwa vindicates PF – GBM

The revelations by Professor Clive Chirwa that Hakainde Hichilema’s attacks on President Michael Sata are derived from bitterness and envy do not surprise, but rather vindicate us as the PF. We have stated before, and state here again, that Mr. Hichilema has no ounce of care for this country and all his criticisms and machinations to sabotage the work of the PF government are a result of anger, bitterness, hatred and shameless envy of PF’s meteoric rise.

Professor Chirwa is speaking with the full insight and knowledge of someone who has worked closely with Mr. Hichilema and his comments must be taken with the seriousness and respect they deserve because, having been inside the UPND, the Professor has watched with horror and shock, the levels Mr. Hichilema can go to, in his self-interested and envious pursuit of power.

A few days ago we stated, and we now maintain, that many some UPND MPs have expressed desire to work with the PF government. We believe the confirmation of this fact from Professor Chirwa’s revelations is very clear.

Mr. Hichilema- the chief Apostle of bitterness and tribalism- only listens to himself. Prior to the 2011 elections, Professor Chirwa advised this gentleman to accept that the UPND was a junior partner in the failed pact and that PF was capable of winning the elections on its own, a fact which materialised much to the embarrassment and anger of our fellow countryman.

It is this failure to rise above selfish interests, bitterness and envy that has helped Mr. Hichilema to tragically kill what should have been a credible opposition party had he not kidnapped the UPND into his bedroom of tribalism and greed.

In 2006 Mr. Hichilema anointed himself as leader of the opposition alliance called UDA, and heavily cost them the elections by securing a paltry 25% votes.

Two years later, this figure drastically reduced to 19.7% in 2008, and further reduced to 18% in 2011. Despite this empirical show of his declining fortunes, our troubled brother Mr. Hichilema still wants to insist that he is very popular in a very rare display of ridiculous delusions never seen among political human species.

Contrast Mr. Hichilema’s self inflicted declining fortunes with the meteoric rise of the Patriotic front, a party that has gained at every elections, and you will get a very clear explanation of where the bitterness and hatred we speak about, and now confirmed by Professor Clive Chirwa, is coming from in Mr. Hichilema.

Even the credibility of the people that the UPND is now recruiting is a serious indictment on Mr. Hichilema’s leadership and political judgment.

Mr. Hichilema is delusional if he thinks grabbing headlines for mischief is making him well-liked. Before he gets preoccupied with the issue of popularity Mr. Hichilema has a greater task of sanitizing himself from bitterness, envy and tribalism.

ZAMBIA SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Zambia Scholarship Fund was founded by Peggy Rogers in 2000 after returning from a visit to Zambia to reunite with a friend from college. Peggy was deeply struck by the severe need for education, especially amongst young children who often had no choice other than to abandon their studies in order to work and help their families. Peggy was so stuck that she made it her life mission to help these children help themselves. In 2010 they raised $173,553 for young students in Zambia and closed 2011 at around $190,000.

What do they do in Zambia?

  • They support education in the poorest and remote areas of Zambia by providing scholarships to students to attend high school (public education in Zambia is only free up to the seventh grade) and college.
  • They hire teachers to teach elementary education in poor and remote villages that have gone without teachers for many years.
  • They supply books, teacher’s kits and other support materials to help our sponsored schools prosper.
  • They send students to high school that otherwise could not afford to attend school at all.
  • They send eager students to teacher’s colleges and send them to teach in poor and rural villages

Government will not use public resources on party programs-Kambwili

12
Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili
Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili

Patriotic Front (PF) Youth Chairperson, Chishimba Kambwili, says government will not use public resources on party programs.

Mr Kambwili said his government will always strive to separate the party from government programs.

Speaking when he addressed PF youths in Livingstone today, Mr Kambwili said using government money on party programs is tantamount to theft which he said his party will not do.

Mr Kambwili, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, urged the Patriotic Front youths to earn clean money and not to receive money from government coffers.

The Minister advised the youths to organize fundraising ventures so that the party can have money to implement its programs.

Mr Kambwili also cautioned youths against aligning themselves with people and companies that have questionable characters.

He said the PF government will not hesitate to prosecute any of its members involved in corrupt practices.

Commenting on Youth Development Fund, the minister said the Patriotic Front youths have equal chances of accessing funds like others.

He said government is trying to avoid a situation where only youths from the ruling party access the funds.

The minister said his government has constituted an Inter-Ministerial committee which is looking at new terms and conditions of disbursing youth development funds in order to avoid reoccurrences on non-payment of grants.

Mr Kambwili disclosed that over the five years the MMD implemented the empowerment program, only K149 million was recovered because it was given to cadres.

He said the disbursement, once started, will be transparent and fair to all youths who qualify.

And speaking earlier Livingstone district youth secretary, Lee Sakunda, complained of lack of funding to the party, especially from the youth wing at the district level.

Mr Sakunda noted that youths in the district have recruited a lot of members to join the Patriotic Front.

Police officers conduct search of UPND Secretariat and leave empty handed

97
File : Police officers wield a short button against UPND cadres outside the Lusaka magistrate court

The ill fated search by over 100 police officers at the UPND Secretariat for suspected seditious materials proved futile.

The officers whose efforts to conduct the search yesterday were thwarted after UPND lawyers rejected the two search warrants because they were defective.

The Police who came from headquarters are said to have produced a convincing search warrant to the UPND lawyers.

The determined officers returned to the UPND Secretariat in the early hours and sealed off Lagos Road where the UPND officers are situated.

Only five officers were allowed to enter the premises after they were throughly searched by alert UPND youths in the presence of six UPND lawyers.

After many hours of searching, the officers left the offices empty handed.

UPND Vice President Richard Kapita later told reporters that the officers searched the entire building and office computers.

Mr. Kapita stated that the UPND does not deal in seditious materials. He said the search is another attempt by President Sata to intimidate the opposition.
Mr. Kapita vowed that the UPND will not be intimidated and will continue speaking out against the wrongs in the PF government.
