Students at Ukwimi Trades study in the dark ahead of December exams

0

Lusangazi District Commissioner Mike Tembo has intervened in a crisis at Ukwimi Trades Training Institute that has gone close to a month without electricity affecting students’ learning and studies.

Mr Tembo is disappointed to learn that the management at the institute has been failing to buy electricity units, despite students paying their tuition fees.

The District Commissioner in an interview at his office on Wednesday expressed disappointment that the students’ dormitories are in a poor condition and no power.

The status quo makes students to study in the dark ahead of their December examinations.

Lack of beds and mattresses, poor condition of the dormitories, and classes and poor sanitation at the learning institution are among the issues that need attention.

“ Government is seriously looking into the plight of students at Ukwimi Trades Training Institute, including deciding on delinking it from the Petauke extension campus., “ he said.

Separating the Lusangazi campus from the Petauke one will assist the original campus in Lusangazi to develop.

As the situation stands, most of the development projects are being directed to the Petauke institute while the neglecting Ukwimi campus is in limbo.

Mr Tembo revealed that he had engaged the institute management over the matter adding that the units have since been bought.

When contacted for a comment, Ukwimi Trades Training Institute Principal Daniel Nyirenda, who is based at Petauke Campus declined to comment on the matter.

Huawei signs global ITU pledge to help 120 million people in remote areas connect to the digital world

0

Huawei has signed a global commitment to join the International Telecommunication Union’s Partner2Connect digital alliance, which will bring connectivity to about 120 million people in remote areas in more than 80 countries by 2025.

Liang Hua, Chairman of Huawei, announced the decision at the company’s 2022 Sustainability Forum, Connectivity+: Innovate for Impact.

The forum explored how ICT innovation could unleash the business and social value of connectivity and drive sustainability in the digital economy era.

Speakers at the event included senior leaders from the ITU and United Nations, telecom ministers and regulators in Cambodia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, and business leaders, partners, experts, and customers from China, South Africa, Belgium, and Germany.

“It is clear connectivity alone is not enough. It must be affordable, the content must be relevant and in the local language, and users must have the skills to make best use of it,” said ITU Deputy Secretary-General Malcolm Johnson.

“Thank you to Huawei for their support of the Partner2Connect (P2C) Digital Coalition, and for their announced P2C pledges in the key areas of rural connectivity and digital skills.”

Siddharth Chatterjee, United Nations Resident Coordinator in China, called for “multi-stakeholder partnerships” of policymakers, the private sector, academia, and civil society to close “the sobering reality”of a digital divide which excluded a third of the global population.

“Our dynamic world urgently needs improved digital cooperation to capitalize on the transformational potential of technology to create new jobs, boost financial inclusion, close the gender gap, spur a green recovery and redesign our world to be more prosperous and inclusive,” he said.”Now is the time to act”.

In his keynote address, Dr Liang stressed that access to astable network was a basic requirement and right in the digital age. For many who remain unconnected, access to reliable connectivity would mark the first step towards transforming their lives.

“Connectivity will be more than just a tool for convenient communications,” he said.

“Together with digital technologies like cloud and AI, connectivity will help bring everyone into the digital world, and provide them with access to more information and skills, better services, and wider business opportunities. This will, in turn, drive further social and economic development.”

Cao Ming, President of Huawei Wireless Solution, said:”As an enterprise with the most complete ICT capabilities, Huawei integrates the full-technology innovation potentialof equipment, sites, energy, transmission, and antennas to address the difficulties faced by traditional site deployment, such as high costs, restricted transportation, lack of power, and maintenance challenges. We have continuously upgraded the RuralStar and RuralLink solutions to extend quality coverage to remote areas, enabling more people, community hospitals, schools, local governments, and small- and medium-sized enterprises to enjoy the same high-speed broadband connectivity experiences as those in cities”.

The RuralStar series solutions have provided connections for more than 60 million people in remote areas in more than 70 countries.

The construction of optical broadband networks offers another important route to realizing a universal service.

Huawei has proposed an innovative AirPON solution forareas with low population density, including remote areas.

This solution continuously reduces the footprint of equipment rooms, optical fiber installation costs, and network power consumption, while ensuring the rapid deployment of local communication networks.

In Africa alone, Huawei has laid more than 250,000 kilometers of optical fibers, enabling 30 million households to access high-speed broadband.

User experience has seen constant improvement.

The average speed of home broadband already exceeds 30 Mbit/s, bringing smarter, faster, and smoother home network experience.

As ICT infrastructure continues to evolve, innovative technologies like cloud and AI are allowing those in rural and remote areas to enjoy the convenience of a digital world.

Huawei Cloud has proposed the Everything as a Service strategy and made Huawei’s more than 30 years of technical expertise and digital transformation experience available through cloud services.

This means that access to Huawei’s digital infrastructure capabilities on the cloud is now just as easy, affordable, and sustainable as water and electricity.

Digital transformation, digital talent, and new business models are all essential for balanced development in remote regions.

Huawei previously announced that by 2025, with the improved ICT infrastructure, the companywill work with partners to enable 500 million people to enjoy digital financial services and 500,000 people to enjoy inclusive education.

In Cambodia, the ITU’s first P2C partner country, Huawei will work with government departments through the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and universities to provide 10,000 training opportunities for ICT professionals in the next five years.

Huawei is committed to inclusive development.

Through its ongoing technological innovation, Huawei is contributing to a higher level of digitalization in remote regions, enabling everyone to enjoy the convenience of a digital life, and promoting the balanced development of the global digital economy.

High electricity connection fees will encourage deforestation-Expert

7

An energy expert has charged that the decision by the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to revise upwards the ZESCO connection fees will affect the efforts that have so far been recorded with regards to enhancing afforestation in the country.

Bornface Zulu has observed that this is because the increase will discourage many people from getting connected to the national electricity grid but will instead resort to using charcoal as the main source of energy.

Mr. Zulu explained to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that increasing the connection fee will mean that less people will have access to electricity in a timely manner as most people will not be able to raise money for connection thereby forcing them to use charcoal and firewood.

He said this will also slow down the efforts which the government has put up for achieving universal access to electricity for all Zambians by 2030.

“This decision will make people not be attracted to connect to the nation grid due to over priced connection fees and this decision also has negative effects on the efforts being made to reduce carbon emissions as well as our carbon storage is affected because less people will be connected to the grid and more people will continue cutting down trees as a source of energy,” he added.

He said there is need for the country to put in place a proper response to energy challenges.

Currently, Zambia’s deforestation rate stands at approximately 300,000 hectares per year, which is expected to grow by 25 percent in the next five years.

The ERB has approved the application by ZESCO to revise upwards the electricity connection charges.

ZRA fines ZESCO, Zambezi Power Company $12 million in penalties

7

The Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) charged ZESCO and the Zimbabwe Power Company US$12,098 million in penalties for over-utilizing water meant for electricity generation at Lake Kariba in the financial year ending 31st December 2021.

This is in line with the provisions of Statutory Instrument Number 109/199 (Water Tariff) by-laws.

As of 31st December 2021, the power utility firms had cumulatively utilised 49.76 billion cubic metres of water.

According to ZRA’s 2021 annual report, the 49.76 billion cubic metres (BCM) translate into 11 per cent above the 2021 combined but equally shared allocation of 45 BCM respectively.

“Kariba North Bank Power Station utilised 25.18 BCM, which was 12 per cent above the 22. 5 BCM water allocation while Kariba South Bank Power Station utilized 24.58 BCM, which is 9 per cent above the 22.5 BCM water allocation,” the report stated.

The annual report further revealed that the impact of the two power utilities exceeding their 2021 water allocation was a drawdown in the lake level from the projected 2021 closing lake level of 19.15 BCM or 30 percent usable storage to the closing level of 2021.

The authority however continued to engage the power utility companies to reduce generation.

ZRA also disclosed that water quality data collection and processing was carried out for some stations on Lake Kariba and the Zambezi River.

The water quality remained within acceptable authority standards.

“The water samples that were analysed during the period under review were observed to be within the authority’s quality guidelines, indicating a healthy aquatic ecosystem,” the report read.

13

President Hakainde Hichilema is on Friday this week expected to grace a graduation ceremony at Chipata Teachers’ College in Eastern Province where he will witness his adopted daughter graduate with a diploma in teaching.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Paul Thole, disclosed to the media today that the President has a daughter who he adopted when she was in primary school and has been supporting since then.

Mr Thole said President Hichilema has been supporting a number of children, especially the physically challenged, in various parts of the country.

He said such kind gestures show how caring the President is, adding that people are confident in his governance.

Mr Thole said the biological parents of President Hichilema’s adopted child are also expected to attend the graduation ceremony on Friday November 25, 2022.

Syakalima warns teachers against exam malpractices

1

Minister of Education, Douglas Syakalima, has sternly warned teachers, who are in the habit of involving themselves in examination malpractice, to stop or face the law.

Mr Syakalima said he is not going to tolerate acts of malpractices especially during examinations.

He said pupils should be left alone to meritoriously earn their grades and not to be spoon fed.

He observed that teachers who are involving themselves in malpractice are not only destroying the learners but also the country as a whole.

Mr Syakalima explained that some teachers have devised a habit of sending answers to pupils using phones after the government addressed the issue of leakages.

The minister said the government has now banned teachers who are invigilating examinations from entering exam rooms with phones.

He said these and other interventions have helped reduce the number of examination malpractice.

Mr. Syakalima said his ministry will do anything possible to ensure that examination malpractice cases are eradicated.

And interim president of the Progressive Educators Union of Zambia, Davison Kandela, said the law should take its course on the 11 teachers that were arrested on allegations of malpractices if they are found wanting.

Mr Kandela has since urged the teachers to remain professional and stay away from such vices which will not just dent their image but also that of the teaching profession.

President Hichilema expresses grief over the recent death of a Zambian student in the Russia-Ukraine war

12

President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed his grief over the recent death of a Zambian student in the Russia-Ukraine war in Europe.

It is understood that 23 year old Lemekhani Nyirenda died in September but Russian authorities only informed the Zambian government of his death last week.

Mr. Nyirenda had gone to Russia to study nuclear engineering but he was serving a jail sentence – for drug-related charges, at the time of his death.

In April 2020, Mr Nyirenda contravened the laws of the Russian Federation and as such, he was convicted and sentenced to nine years and six months imprisonment.

However, it has been established that while serving his prison term, Mr Nyirenda was allegedly recruited to fight in Ukraine.

Speaking to CNN News, President Hichilema has said it was unfortunate that Mr. Nyirenda, who was in the custody of the Russian government, has died in a war against Ukraine.

He said the Zambian Government does not understand how Nyirenda found himself in the war when he was said to be in jail.

President Hichilema said his government was waiting for an explanation from Russia on the circumstances leading to the death of the young man.

“Lemekhani Nyirenda is a 23 year old child who went to study in Russian and found himself on the wrong side of the law, got jailed for nine years. He was serving a sentence in a Russian jail. How he got out of jail, got to the war-front, got to the arms-way we don’t know as Zambians. We have asked the Russians to explain the situation,” President Hichilema said.

“We are still waiting for an explanation. We haven’t got it up to now. It is really unfortunate that a young person like him, a foreigner under the custody of Russians, could die at war, at this war, war between Russia and Ukraine. Most unfortunate we are waiting for answers and haven’t got them yet,” he said in a television news interview.

According to Foreign Affairs Minister Stanley Kakubo, Mr. Nyirenda’s remains have been transported to the Russian border town of Rostov in readiness for repatriation to Zambia.

He said the deceased was a government sponsored student, who was pursuing nuclear engineering at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute in the Russian Federation.

Through the embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Moscow, the Ministry immediately proceeded to verify this information where it was established that Mr Nyirenda indeed passed away on 22nd September, 2022, in Ukraine.

The Minister said in April 2020, Mr Nyirenda contravened the laws of the Russian Federation and as such, was subsequently convicted and sentenced to nine years and six months imprisonment.

He said Mr Nyirenda was serving his sentence at Tyer Medium security prison on the outskirts of Moscow.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema has in the past expressed his concern about the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine saying he wished to see an end to the conflict.

Speaking when he received credentials from Diplomats, among them new Russian Ambassador to Zambia Azim Yarakhmedov, last May, President Hichilema said there was need to work together to bring the war to an end.

“Your Excellency, it is my noble duty on behalf of the people of Zambia and on behalf of I believe the global community, that the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia is of great concern to us. I think if I didn’t say that, I will be deceiving the reality of ourselves and the reality on the ground. I believe it is not just Zambia, the regional community and international countries. As a proponent of peace ourselves, Zambia I am sure the history is clear of who we are, we wish to see an end to that war,” President Hichilema said.

“And we encourage your country, Ukraine and other countries in that part of the world and all of us to work together to bring that war to an end. We have to do what it takes but you are the first call, and we would like to support that call that would lead us to achieving peace, to restore order in those countries. I am saying those countries because it is not just Russia which is affected, it is not just Ukraine which is affected, it is the Polish. It is anyone else. As you know, we had to evacuate our own students from Ukraine, we would have loved them to stay. So please, let us work together. That is our plea as the global community because when we have peace and stability we can focus on development, focus on social issues, cultural issues. So, we want to wish you the best and whatever we can do as a small decent country, we would like to do.”

Meanwhile, the South African government has sent condolences to the family of Zambian student killed in the Russia-Ukraine war

Presidential Spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya said it was tragic that the world continued to experience loss of life due to conflict.

“And it is for this reason that President [Cyril] Ramaphosa has been quite consistent in calling for a dialogue between all parties concerned in resolving this conflict”, Magwenya said.

Movie Review : Black Adam

Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods–and imprisoned just as quickly–Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

PROS

  • Great performance by the whole cast particularly Dwayne Johnson and Pierce Brosnan.
  • Interesting storyline.

CONS

  • The storyline needed more depth.
  • Poor character development for most of the supporting cast.
  • Dwayne Johnson was a little monotone. This was not his greatest performance. Johnson is basically a real-life superhero but the movie failed to fully utilize him.

FAVORITE QUOTES

Hawkman: “In this world, there are heroes and there are villains. Heroes don’t kill people!”

Black-Adam: “Well, I do.”

Black-Adam: “My powers are not a gift. They’re a curse, born out of rage.”

Hawkman: “We’re here to negotiate your peaceful surrender.”

Black-Adam: “I’m not peaceful. Nor do I surrender.”

CONCLUSION

There was a lot of hype surrounding Black Adam. The movie stars arguably the most prominent Hollywood star, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. I came into this movie with a lot of optimism but unfortunately, it did not live up to the massive hype.

Nothing about “Black Adam” is so bad that the movie should be ignored, but there is also nothing—aside from the allure of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see.

The movie starts off with an interesting backstory but fails to really build on it, relying heavily on some amazing CGI-filled action sequences. The movie goes on to casually introduce us to a large group of superheroes, The Justice Society, as though we’ve known them forever: Kent Nelson, a.k.a. Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan); Carter Hall, a.k.a. Hawkman (Aldis Hodge); Albert Rothstein, a.k.a. Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo); Maxine Hunkel, a.k.a. Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). The last two mentioned left me scratching my head as to why they were even included. The movie presupposes that the viewers are familiar with the characters instead of taking a bit of time to properly introduce them.

Another issue I had with the movie was the supposed villain. He had no character development , and nobody watching the movie would even has the slightest of thought that he passed any great threat to Black Adam. Every hero needs a great villain, Black Adam has not found his yet.

Black Adam doesn’t pioneer any new territory that hasn’t already been covered by other superhero movies. However, it is still a strong summer blockbuster supported by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnsons consistently outstanding work.

Address the high cost of doing business in Zambia, Government told

9

Ndola District Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Paul Chisunka has called on the New Dawn government to address the high cost of doing business in Zambia as a way of supporting entrepreneurship.

In commemorating Global Entrepreneurship Week, Mr. Chisunka cited expensive, inadequate financial capital, limited access to markets, a cumbersome regulatory and licensing regime as some major challenges affecting entrepreneurs.

He advocated the enacting of Local Content legislation to prompt major buyers such as the government and the mines to make a conscious deliberate effort to strengthen local value chains.

Mr. Chisunka said the Ndola Chamber believes that the ongoing shift towards a business-friendly environment is the best catalyst to unleash Zambia’s entrepreneurial spirit.

“To support and nurture entrepreneurship, we need to urgently address severe constraints such as the high cost of doing business in Zambia which is further compounded by expensive and inadequate financial capital, limited access to markets, a cumbersome regulatory and licensing regime, insufficient R & D, weak governance and management systems, low skills and entrepreneurial competencies, as well as a low uptake of modern technologies to help revolutionize business processes and improve the quality of products and services offered to consumers. We also believe that the fastest way to orchestrate Entrepreneurship Development and super-charge the Zambian economy is to open up markets by enacting Local Content legislation to prompt major buyers such as government and the mines to make a conscious deliberate effort to strengthen local value chains and local supply chains by buying from Zambian manufacturers, service providers, and other suppliers,” Mr. Chisunka said.

“On the Policy and regulatory front, entrepreneurs are largely represented amongst MSMEs so the Revised MSME Policy is highly anticipated. We expect the new MSME Policy to re-define and re-classify MSMEs in a manner that does not expose them to unfair competition. The Policy should promote MSME growth and development by introducing higher turnover brackets and employee thresholds, and accord MSMEs better tax and regulatory treatment, as well as reduced statutory fees. Single licensing, simplified administrative procedures and reduced paperwork for MSME registration and compliance will provide immediate financial relief and encouragement for MSMEs to regularize themselves and become compliant. This will increase the number of MSMEs that can be on-boarded into the mainstream economy. If we do it properly, it will result in a higher rate of expansion in the Zambian economy through the combined economic activities of various MSMEs spread across the country in both urban and rural areas,” he stated.

Mr. Chisunka said there is a need to create a sustainable business ecosystem that links entrepreneurs to indispensable partners, thereby making it possible to undertake profitable ventures in a socially and environmentally responsible manner that benefits communities and generates revenue for the government.

“To build a critical mass of entrepreneurs, Zambia needs infrastructure and deep rooted synergies involving the Government, Academia, Private Sector, Civil Society, and Development Partners. This will allow us to draw powerful capabilities and resources that each respective stakeholder is able to bring in the form of policy, research, commercial skill, best practices, capital and international facilitation. The combination of these factors will create a sustainable business ecosystem that links entrepreneurs to indispensable partners, therefore making it possible to undertake profitable ventures in a socially and environmentally responsible manner that benefits communities and generates revenue for the government. In order to reduce the cost of doing business and the cost of living, we urge the government to pay particular attention to tackling cost related bottlenecks in the business regulatory environment and to completely move away from a high tax regime,” Mr. Chisunka said.

He said lower tax rates can also encourage banks to reduce interest rates and make money more affordable to borrow for businesses and households.

“We emphasize that high taxes and over regulation are a disservice to our economy because they damage the production and operational efficiencies of businesses which makes goods and services expensive thus adding inflationary pressure and weakening the purchasing power of consumers. We propose that lower tax bands and policy incentives be introduced for MSMEs, cottage industries, and cooperatives. This will act as a countervailing measure against unfair competition and help to revive Zambia’s industrial base by promoting value addition and providing necessary safeguards to infant industries.”

“Research shows that higher tax rates can sometimes decrease the tax base, which will lead to the decrease in tax revenues even if the tax rates are high. The case to systematically reduce taxes is therefore strong and cannot be over emphasized because, by identifying and lowering high taxes we can boost local and foreign investments resulting in more output, higher employment, better standards of living, and more tax revenue. Lower tax rates can also encourage banks to reduce interest rates and make money more affordable to borrow for businesses and households,” he said.

‘We Won’t be Apologetic for doing the Right thing’ – Councillor Simataa Leads Demolition of Illegal Boundary Walls in Kamwala South

6

Yesterday, Kamwala Ward Councillor Mainda Simataa led a team of Lusaka City Council – LCC Police escorted by armed Zambia Police in a demolition exercise of two (2) illegal boundary walls on properties that had encroached on a road reserve and restricted road access for the community.

Mr Simataa disclosed that one of the illegal walls built on the said road reserve near Edgars Pub off Nationalist road belonged to a Zambia Army Sergeant Mulope of Kamwala South, who had allegedly threatened to shoot anyone who dared to interfere with his building project.

He added that the other wall was built by his neighbour, an unidentified woman who followed the Sergeant’s example after seeing that there was no punitive action taken by the Council, thus, she also extended her wall fence.

“We won’t be apologetic for doing the right thing, which serves the interest of the majority – community members, whose interests are bigger than an individual’s interests, and where individual interests come into conflict with community interests, community interests must prevail,” he stated

“These culprits were warned, and a 30 days notice was given to them, with an additional 6 months, maybe they thought we will never come or that we didn’t have the balls to do it, this must serve as an example to would-be offenders,” Councillor Simataa mentioned

Mr Simataa explained that this demolition exercise has now paved way for a borehole drilling truck to have an easy access to the area where the drilling is taking place, adding that people in the community will soon have access to water after the completion of the borehole drilling.

Agricultural development has potential to impact on extreme poverty – Mulyata

0

The government says agriculture remains key priority sector in its poverty reduction agenda for Zambia.

Lusaka Province Minister Sheal Mulyata says this is because the majority of the vulnerable but viable people in communities depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.

Ms. Mulyata adds that agricultural development has the potential to impact on extreme poverty and hunger, which affects the majority of the communities in the country.

Speaking in Rufunsa on Monday when she flagged off the input distribution exercise under the Food Security Pack (FSP), the minister said that the new dawn government has given first priority to agriculture.

This is evident by the move taken to increase the number of beneficiaries from 1,300 beneficiaries to 2,124 beneficiaries in the 2022 /2023 farming season.

“I am reliably informed that this programme is specifically targeting the poor and vulnerable but viable farmer households especially the female headed households, ” said Ms. Mulyata.

The main goal of increasing the number of beneficiaries is to increase production for good security and help small scale farmers to have access to agricultural inputs in a timely manner.

“The figures above may not be sufficient to attend to all the vulnerable but viable farmers in our communities but reflects government efforts in improving good security at household level, ” said Ms. Mulyata.

She challenged communities to ensure that beneficiaries of the FSP pack follow the laid down guidelines for sustainability of the programme in the district.

Ms. Mulyata who is also Rufunsa member of Parliament encouraged community beneficiaries to pay back so that the number of beneficiaries may increase in future.

And Rufunsa District FSP Chairperson Baster Mumba said the vulnerable but viable farmers that received the fertilisers and seed were identified through a process called targeting during community meetings.

Mr. Mumba added that criteria followed were the beneficiary household who met one or more of the females headed household; child headed households and. disabled household.

Others included household ages 65 years and above; household keeping orphans; household with more than seven members; terminally ill headed household and unemployed youths

Mr. Mumba said the FSP beneficiaries in Rufunsa are deeply appreciative for the support government is giving to the vulnerable saying this is evident through the increase seen in the number of beneficiaries this year which has gone up by 824 from 1,300 beneficiaries last year to 2,124 beneficiaries in the 2022/2023 farming season.

“We want to commend the Government for the continued commitment towards the FSP programme and for increasing the number of beneficiaries in the 2022/2023 farming season, ” said Mr. Mumba.

And 82-year-old FSP beneficiary, John Mutinta said he is grateful to government for assisting the vulnerable but viable farmers in the area with inputs.

Mr. Mutinta said the assistance from the Government through FSP will contribute greatly to the household food security.

“We are grateful to the Government for the support received through FSP in Rufunsa District for the vulnerable but viable farmers, ” said Mr. Mutinta.

Meanwhile, Rufunsa District Commissioner Richard Mabena warned the FSP beneficiaries in the district not to sale the fertilisers and seed received.

“I want to warn the beneficiaries of the FSP in the district that my team will be going round inspecting crop fields to ensure that no one sales the farming inputs, ” said Mr. Mabena.

FSP was introduced in November 2000 by government as a Social Safety Net programme under the Department of Community Development , to primarily empower vulnerable but viable farmer households who had lost their productive assets due to recurrent unfavourable climate conditions among other conditions.

Lusambo case fails to take off in Luanshya

Some Catholics in politics have been a very big disappointment when given an opportunity to serve the people

9

Catholic Diocese of Ndola Bishop Benjamin Phiri has said some Catholics in politics have been a very big disappointment when given an opportunity to serve the people.

And Bishop Phiri said people should not kill each other because of differences in political affiliations.

Bishop Phiri, a Canon Lawyer, observed that some Catholic politicians tend to abandon God and their Catholic faith when serving in various portfolios.

Speaking during the Silver Jubilee celebration of St. Antonio Fasani Catholic Church in Ndola, Bishop Phiri said politicians should utilise their authority to influence the community with their faith positively.

He charged that some people were engaging in politics for personal benefits.

“Now, the thing for many of us is to belong to that political party so that when that political party is in power we can chew with that political party. We even fight and kill each other over politics. Just know that God does not appear anywhere in that situation but you are here (Church) and want to receive the Blessed Sacrament. No. If we are reconciled with God we are going to live peacefully with each other regardless of the faith profession, regardless of the tribe, regardless of the political affiliation. When we are here (Church) we are just children of God and we live in peace with each other and we celebrate before God. That is the conversion that we want,” Bishop Phiri preached.

The Bishop of Ndola warned that political power was temporary.

“You, our Catholic politicians, I am talking about the politicians now, you, our Catholic politicians, are a very big disappointment many times because when you get into that little position that you have temporarily, you forget God. Manje bakakuchosapo afterwards when you are no longer in that position you start trekking back to Church and saying that you believe, you believe what? You do not believe anything. When you had the opportunity to influence the community with your faith positively you did not do it. You chose to go with those who acted as if there is no God. Then after enjoying yourself for five or ten years, some of you have been in politics for a long time, fifteen, 20 years because you jump from one ship to another. You jump into this one, when you see this ship is sinking you jump into the next one and you remain afloat in politics but all that time you have never done anything useful for the community except for your cronies and then you come here (Church) and say you are celebrating 25 years, of what? You see this is the issue that we need to sit and think about,” Bishop Phiri said.

He said people should understand that the Church is not there to help politicians to get into power or get out of power.

“Think about the faith, the Church is there to help people come close to God and to help God come close to the people. The Church is not there to help you as a politician to get into power or get out of power. It is not like that. We are here to serve God and the people of God. So if you start praying when you are in the opposition so that you can use the Church to get into power and then do what you like, you are a very sorry and sad person because you are neither here nor there. Your judgment is pronounced already unless you change. So my dear priests and the community I am inviting you to a genuine conversion. The time will come when we have to account for our lives,” Bishop Phiri said.

Bishop Phiri further told the congregation at St. Antonio Fasani Catholic Church that the Jubilee celebration should help Christians to evaluate their faith in God.

The Bishop said the 25th anniversary celebration of the Church should come with growth in faith among Christians at Pamodzi Parish.

ZNPHI calls for collaborated efforts to fighting Antimicrobial Resistance

0

The Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) has called for collaborated efforts across all sectors in the fight against Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

ZNPHI Director General, Roma Chilengi disclosed that Antimicrobial Resistance remains a threat to humans, animals, plants and the environment.

Professor Chilengi explained that irrational and overuse of antibiotics in different sectors have led to the emergence of extended AMR and accumulation of residual antibiotics in the environment.

He said this in Lusaka after an awareness walk, in light of the World Antimicrobial awareness week that runs from November 18 to November 24, 2022 and carrying the theme ‘preventing Antimicrobial Resistance together.

Prof Chilengi cited various studies that show the Sub-Saharan bears the heaviest burden of resistant bacterial infections, adding that Zambia has not been spared with confirmed incidences in a few selected provinces.

He therefore stressed that the fight against AMR is a global effort and must be addressed through a one health approach.

He indicated that the event is a global campaign to accelerate the key objective of improving awareness and understanding of AMR through effective communication, education and training.

“This week-long event not only raises awareness on the effects of AMR but also emphasizes on the importance AMR containment policies such as strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programmes that address rational use of antibiotics and formulate antimicrobial policies in hospitals,” Prof Chilengi stated.

And World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative Nathan Bakyaita cited the 2019 report that disclosed about 4.95 million deaths globally were attributed to drug resistance bacterial infections 1.27 million directly related to AMR.

Dr Bakyaita issued a call to action for governments of African member states to commit investment towards sustainable local financing and implementation of AMR national action plans focused on infection prevention and control.

Dr Bakyaita added the need to build resilient health systems by maintaining the critical balance between addressing AMR and access to vital medicines.

“Remember, misuse and abuse of antimicrobials puts us all at risk, so let us unite to prevent Antimicrobial Resistance together,” Dr Bakyaita recited.

This was in a statement issued on Dr Bakyaita’s behalf by WHO National Professional Officer Freddie Masaninga.

Meanwhile, Veterinary Services Director, Geoffrey Muuka said the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is encouraging that antibiotics are only given to animals under Veterinary supervision.

Dr Muuka explained that antibiotics should not be used for the promotion of animal growth or prevent diseases in healthy animals and fish.

He noted that this among other good practices will help keep the medicine cabinet protected for now and for the future, as well as help control the spread of antibiotics resistance.
