Zambian Players Transfer Round-up

27

We run down the movers and non-movers for Zambian players as the international players transfer window enters its penultimate month of business.

Starting in South Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns deny having any interest in signing Zambia striker Collins Mbesuma after speculation that he would be joining the 8-time South African league champions.

Mbesuma is clubless after his 3-year deal with Turkish side Bursaspor was terminated in May due to poor form just a year gone into the deal.

And ex-Zambia and Chambishi FC striker Davies Mwape has confirmed he is staying at relegated South African side Jomo Cosmos.

Mwape had an uneventful first season with Cosmos on their way down to division 1 from the Premier League after joining from ambitious promotion playoff side FC AK.

He previously played for Orlando Pirates whom he joined from Chambishi in 2005.

And Zesco United and Zambia midfielder Rainford Kalaba today left for Portugal to begin 4-year deal with Sporting Braga.

Kalaba’s departure for Braga has been on hold for the last 3 weeks due to a delay in the issuing of his Portuguese work permit that came through this week.

And Zambia and Power Dynamos defensive midfielder Francis Kasonde set to join Doxa Katokopia of Cyprus on short-term deal.

Doxa finished 9th on the Cypriot top-flight table last season.

Kasonde is the fourth Zambia player and former Under-23 player heading for Cyprus in the last 7 days after the Young Arrows dup of defender Joseph Zimba and midfielder Timothy Mbewe including Forest Rangers striker Christopher Musonda.

Meanwhile, the biggest mover so far from the Zambian fold abroad has been that of Zamabia and Zanaco striker Roger Kola to Russian side Spartak Moscow on a 6-month deal.

It is likely to be extended to 2-years should he impress during the remainder of the Russian top-flight campaign that ends in December that will reportedly be worth US$ 200,000.00.

Spartak are currently 4th on the table after 12 matches played this season.

Divorce is Damaging to Kids

45

Researchers have confirmed divorce has lasting damage
on children.

A recent study in Britain found that children whose parents
divorced are more likely to perform badly academically.

Th children, according to the study, are also more likely to
suffer from depression.

In short, divorce harms a child’s well being.

“Divorce has repercussions that reverberate through
childhood and into adulthood.

” Children from disrupted families tend to do less well in school
and subsequent careers than their peers,” researchers say.

They explained that children are also more likely to experience the
break-up of their own partnerships.

The researchers tracked around 17,000 people born in
Britain during one week in 1958 over the course of their lives
to arrive at this conclusion.

At their 50th birthday anniversaries, the researchers compared their
lives with other sample groups born in earlier and later years.

From the sanmples, the study has confirmed that children born in 1958 were much
less likely to experience parental divorce than children today.

Family break-up was subject greater social stigma, something that was sometimes
thought to contribute to the problems experienced by the children of
divorced parents.

President Mwanawasa was admitted to Sharm-el-sherik international hospital in the resort city of sharm-el-sheik in Egypt after he suffered a stroke on June, 29th, 2008, where he had gone to attend an African Union (AU) heads of state summit.

He was later evacuated to Percy military hospital on 1st July, 2008, where he is currently admitted.

Meanwhile, Vice President Rupiah Banda says Zambia has continued to benefit immensely from Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Banda said Saudi Arabia which is one of the leading oil producing nations (OPEC) has continued to use its oil wealth to the betterment of mankind to which Zambia draws finances to fund many projects.

The Royal Embassy Saudi Arabia donated 400 tones of assorted food stuffs that included rice, flour, macaroni salt and beans, among others, and 2,000 tents while the Saudi Arabia government donated 12,762 cartons of assorted foodstuffs and 2,000 tents.

Mr. Banda noted that the kingdom of Saudi Arabia has consistently assisted the underprivileged in Africa and Zambia is not an exception.

He observed that the donations represent the strong bondage of friendship that exists between Zambia and Saudi Arabia.

“Early this year, the royal kingdom of Saudi Arabia donated a large consignment of dates to the victims of floods that wrecked havoc in Zambia. Relations between the two countries have a long history and we recognize and respect Saudi Arabia as home of Islam, one of the world’s two largest religious,” Mr. Banda.

Speaking earlier, a representative of the ministry of finance of the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Saad Abdulaziz Alsineadi said his government is a pioneer in extending relief assistance to all Arab, Islamic and other friendly countries like Zambia when faced with natural disasters and calamities.

And Charge’d’ Affaires at the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Naseh Al-Nefaie said the kingdom of Saudi Arabia appreciates the efforts being taken by DMMU in alleviating the sufferings of the flood victims.

Develop Corruption Controls Systems-ACC

14

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) has appealed to both private and public institutions to establish strong control systems to curb corrupt practices and check individuals involved in the vice.

ACC Corporate Affairs Officer, Wendy Mwachilenga, told ZANIS in an interview at the ongoing Zambia International Trade Fair (ZITF) that the fight against corruption at various levels could be enhanced if institutions put in place strong controls systems.

Ms. Mwachilenga said there was need for public officers to exhibit high levels of integrity by promoting accountability in their work ethics.

She disclosed that prevention of institutionalised corruption should be promoted at all costs in order to reduce the vice.

She said the commission has established integrity committees in eight institutions as a pilot to promote self screening and fight mal-administration in organisations and ministries where the practices were seemingly prominent.

Ms. Mwachilenga said the commission also initiated the formulation of service charters which should serve as a guide to members of the public in acquiring a service from a public institution.

She said the service charter would serve as a simple roadmap for the service seeker to know how long he should wait for the service.

She explained that this would entail that no one takes undue advantage of the time lapse and start asking for favours to speed up the process.

Ms. Mwachilenga added that institutionalized red tape and unnecessary bureaucracy were high promoters of corruption because “generally people want a quick service”.

She also called on institutions and organisations to formulate and observe a code of ethics which employees should follow in conducting business and dealing with clients as a check on corrupt practices.

She said procedures should be simplified so that the people seeking a service could know and have a clear and simple channel to follow when reporting a complaint over a service that has been delayed.

Ms Mwachilenga said her Commission had a challenge to ensure that people in general were sensitized on the dangers of corruption to the national economy and general development.

The ACC Corporate Affairs Officer further said the commission was committed to ensuring that people got the message on corruption and how to prevent it through various avenues that were deemed user friendly and effective in reaching even people in the villages.

Ms Mwachilenga added that when the levels of integrity and transparency were high in institutions and organisations country wide, such that even dubious investors would think twice before coming to Zambia.

Chief thanks govt for relief food

5

Chief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka district in Southern province has commended government for sending huge quantities of relief food to his subjects whose crops and houses where damaged by floods during the last rain season.

The chief told ZANIS in Mazabuka today, that without quick government intervention, his subjects could have starved to death.

Chief Mwanachingwala said government, through the Office of the Vice President, deserved to be commended for coming to the rescue of the flood victims whom he said were only surviving through begging.

Yesterday, Mazabuka District Commissioner, Tyson Hamaamba told ZANIS, that government had sent 8,000 by 50 kilogramme bags of white maize to people whose crops and homes where swept away by floods.

And Chief Mwanachingwala has disclosed that 60 families, who were displaced by floods, have finally been relocated to higher grounds while a few have decided to go back to their previous villages.

Mazabuka is one of the districts in the province which was severely hit by floods.

Meanwhile, Chief Mwanachingwala has called on the veterinary department to immediately lift the ban on the movement of livestock and export of its products from Mazabuka.

Chief Mwanachingwala said in a statement to ZANIS in Mazabuka today, that the department should not ignore the plight of cattle farmers when the district has not recorded any fresh cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in a long time now.

He said he was privileged to attend a stakeholders meeting, which was chaired by Mazabuka District Veterinary officer, Dr Nawa Mabuku, where a status report on the disease prevalence revealed that no more FMD cases had been reported in the district.

He said government should realise that his subjects were now suffering, especially that they not yet recovered from the effects of the floods which destroyed their crops and animals.

”The ban has caused immense suffering on cattle farmers who depend solely on the sale of livestock for survival. But why should government pretend as if everything is alright,” asked Chief Mwanachingwala

The Chief complained that most of his subjects have failed to send their children to high schools due to lack of funds to meet school requirements that include school fees.

And a representative of commercial farmers from Kapinga farms complained that the ban on the movement of livestock has only promoted illegal movement of livestock by some traders.

He urged government to lift the suspension before most commercial farmers become bankrupt.

KK Welcomes Zambia’s hosting of a Tourism Event

28

First Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda, has welcomed government’s move to host this year’s regional Southern Africa Tourism Exposition, which will be held in Livingstone from September 25 to 27, 2008.

Dr. Kaunda said the move would provide an opportunity for Zambia to showcase the country’s enormous tourism potential.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that Zambia has a lot of tourism products and beautiful sceneries that needed to be marketed in order to stimulate growth in the tourism sector.

“Zambia cannot wait to benefit from the regional Southern African Tourism Exposition. Government should do everything possible to market the event,” he said.

Dr Kaunda has however challenged government to put in place extra measures aimed at enhancing the growth of the tourism sector, citing infrastructure development such as roads, airports and hotels.

He cited the implementation of the Private-Public Partnership (PPP) initiative as one of the extra remedial measures that government must put in place to facilitate the growth of the country’s tourism sector.

He further urged the Zambia Tourism Board (ZTB) and tour operators in the country to take advantage of the forthcoming 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup tournament in South Africa and the 2011 All African Games in Zambia to showcase the country’s massive tourism potential.

Dr Kaunda said Zambia should seriously devise a mechanism aimed at attracting more tourist inflows in an effort to increase foreign revenue in the tourism sector.

He said that ZTB must come up with a carnival type of tourism which would enable the country to market its tourism potential meaningfully to other regions.

Meanwhile, First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda has urged countries under the Kavango-Zambezi Trans-frontier Conservation Development Plan (KAZA) to take advantage of the region’s integrated development programme with a view to uplift the living standards of their people.

Dr Kaunda said countries under the KAZA programme should rise to the challenge of wealth creation and endeavor to uplift the living standards of people by embracing the goals set under the KAZA programme.

He said the Zambian government and other countries should embrace the newly launched KAZA integrated development plan aimed at boosting the employment opportunities and wealth creation in the Southern African region.

Dr Kaunda noted that the KAZA integrated development, which will target five countries in the Southern African region once implemented, will help unlock the economic development potential through developing other new tourism resorts.

He said the Zambian government should remain committed to supporting the KAZA integrated programme, which he said was a major economic avenue to the country’s programme of improving its citizens’ living standards.

Countries that are set to benefit from the Kavango-Zambezi Trans-frontier Integrated Development Plan are Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia.

And speaking in a separate interview in Lusaka today, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia Li Qiangmin urged the Zambian government to work out effective modalities of marketing the country’s tourism potential on the international market.

Mr. Li said there was need to improve infrastructure such as roads, hotels and airports that lead to tourism destinations so as to attract more people.

The Chinese envoy to Zambia however expressed happiness at the manner in which the Zambian tourism sector was growing.

Mr. Li said because of the good micro-economic policies that the Zambian government has continued to put in place, the country has over the past five years recorded unprecedented growth in the tourism sector.

He said the unprecedented growth in the sector has also contributed favourably to the Gross Domestic Products (GDP) of the country.

He said this has contributed to employment creation and poverty reduction in country’s most communities.

Mr. Li has since urged Zambian business people to take advantage of the prevailing atmosphere and invest in the tourism sector as a powerful means of their economic gains.

Mr. Phiri has since asked Gen. Masheke to desist from his plans to destabilise UNIP but instead who instead should concentrate on offering solutions to the FDD.

He said this in a press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He has appealed to the youths and the entire UNIP membership to be vigilant and not allowing sponsored people to cause confusion in the oldest political party in the country.

He said UNIP president, Tilyenji Kaunda and the Central Committee members would go to the National Congress when the party deemed fit to do so.

Malone Zaza Traced

146

A ZAMBIAN suspected to have issued the false statement alleging that President Mwanawasa had died, has been traced in South Africa.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Kabinga Pande said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the Zambian mission traced the Zambian man named Malone Zaza and contacted him.

Mr Pande said the Zambian mission wanted to establish whether Mr Zaza was the one who issued the false statement on radio and asked him to report to the high commission but had not done so.

“There is a well known Zambian by the name of Malone Zaza in South Africa. Our mission called him by phone and requested to see him and he agreed to do that but up to now he hasn’t shown up.

“The mission is still making efforts to get hold of Mr Zaza and we hope to do that soon although he has now switched off his phone,” Mr Pande said.

South Africa’s Talk Radio 702 reported last Thursday that Dr Mwanawasa had died, quoting a Malone Zaza as a Zambian High Commission spokesman who confirmed the death.

The report was subsequently picked up by the international media and was aired worldwide on several stations including the BBC, Sky News and Cable News Network (CNN) before being withdrawn after the Government clarified the matter that the president was alive.

Petty corruption still high in Zambia

27

Though the Zambian government has declared zero tolerance on corruption, petty corruption is still high, results of study conducted by anti corruption watchdog Transparency International have shown.

The survey, conducted by Transparency International- Zambia (TI-Z), has shown that though grand corruption was down, petty corruption was still high.

The Bribe Payers’ index showed that instances of public officials soliciting for bribes have continued to be a source of grave concern.

The survey showed that bribe taking increased by a total of 58.5 percent in the business sector and 38.5 percent in the public service.

Most of the people interviewed said they paid bribes to the police service, road traffic department, the revenue collection body, the local councils and passport offices to get a service.

About 36 percent of the people interviewed said refusal to pay a bribe resulted in denied service while 52 percent said it resulted in unnecessarily delayed service.

Furthermore, about 56.3 percent of the people talked to said the current government was not committed in fighting corruption compared to 43.7 percent who felt that the government was committed.

“By and large, the current government’s performance in fighting corruption was poorly rated though some improvements in handling complaints were also noted by respondents,” TI-Z Board Member Kavwanga Yambayamba said at the launch of the report.

TI-Z has since urged the Zambian government to undertake a comprehensive anti corruption approach.

The survey, conducted last year in all the country’s nine provinces, involved 1, 948 respondents. The respondents included households, business owners and civil servants.

About 90 percent of the business respondents indicated that corruption levels in the country were still severe while over 80 percent public workers indicated that the vice was still high.

Since coming into office in 2002, current President Levy Mwanawasa has embarked on a crackdown on corruption.

Mugabe risks going down in history as Oppressor-Mulongoti

198

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe risks going down in history as a leader who refused to give up power and oppressed his people, Zambian Information Minister Mike Mulongoti said on Saturday.

In an interview with AFP TV, Mulongoti at first paid tribute to Mugabe for “standing up against colonialism” and winning independence for the former Rhodesia in 1980.

“But now you cannot transplant colonialism for oppression. If you oppress people, what’s the difference between you and the colonialists?

“So, I do not know whether — when we write history books — he shall go in the history books as our hero or we should begin to cast doubt as to whether the services he’s supposed to have rendered he took away himself by overstaying and doing certain things that were unacceptable in a civilised world.”

Zambia was one of the first countries to openly criticise Mugabe, who was sworn in on Sunday for a sixth term after elections denounced as a “farce” by the opposition and Western leaders.
