Roan United defender kellys Sichiliya caused a stir at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka on Saturday, May 10, after he was forced to answer to the call of nature on the corner-line in full view of spectators.
The incident happened in the 71st minute of Roan’s Faz Premier League Week 9 match away to Green Buffaloes with the hosts trailing 1-0.
Sichiliya, who was on the substitute bench, stood up from Roan’s dug-out after he suddenly felt a strong urge to relieve himself.
However, when Sichiliya got to the locked gate leading to the tunnel leading to the dressing room, the Buffaloes match stewards refused to let Sichiliya through.
The Stewards allegedly suspected the defender of attempting an act of “Juju” in a match Buffaloes enjoyed but fluffed more shots on goal than their hosts whose best chance on target they utilized to full-effect in the 27th minute when striker Ben Mwanza converted a penalty.
Sichiliya pleaded with the stewards, who were on the spectator side of the field behind a locked gate, for three minutes to let him through to Roan’s dressing room but they refused to yield to his plea.
With no intervention from the referee, Sichiliya then trotted off to Roan’s end of the corner-line of the field where he joined two of his team mates were warming up.
Sichiliya then positioned himself in-between the two players to join them in a stretch routine.
In the midst of the exercise, Sichiliya went down on both knees, extracted his member through the leg of his shorts.
He then proceeded to take a pee in full-view of an amused half-full Woodlands crowd without receiving a reprimand from the match officials.
Sichiliya then returned to warming up with his team mates before he came onto the field of play 5 minutes later.
To Buffaloes relief, Roan’s magic was “neutralized” and they went on to equalize in the 83rd minute via a penalty of their own converted by Lawrence Phiri to finish level with the visiting side.
Unlike in the past, shenanigans are rare in the top-flight though in extreme cases some visiting teams have been denied access to the playing field until the final minutes before kickoff.
Meanwhile, Buffaloes are top of the Faz Premier League table after that home draw tied 16 points together with former leaders Young Arrows and defending league champions Zesco United from 9 matches played.
Roan on the other hand, are 7 points adrift of the trio tied at the top and 2nd from bottom in the two-month-old league season.
