An Analysis of Zambia’s moral decay -Chitimukulu

sex edcation

By Dr. Henry Kanyanta Sosala

The most dangerous gift which has been bestowed upon human beings is sex. Sex drive is very strong in teenagers and sex is normally something very difficult to be reasonable about. And even the apostle Paul had to warn Timothy, ‘’……. avoid the passions of youth and strive for righteousness (purity)’’ (2 Timothy 2: 22)

And if one wants to destroy any people, he can only do so by devastating the morals i.e., to let them be sexually active. The Bible has a clear example to this effect. In the Book of Numbers chapters 23-25, we read that when the Moab king heard how the Israelites had conquered many other nations, he hired the prophet Balaam to come and curse the Israelites. But having failed to curse them since they had been blessed by the Lord, he only advised the Moab king that the only option was to send their beautiful women to seduce the Israelites and it worked: ‘’One of the Israelites took a Midianite woman into his tent in the sight of Moses and the whole community, while they were mourning at the entrance of the Tent of the Lord’s presence…’’ And the consequences were disastrous for the nation of Israel.

And just like Balaam’s advice, listen to what Lord Macaulay told the British Parliament on 2nd February, 1835: ‘’I have travelled across the length and breadth of Africa and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such caliber, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, if the Africans think that all that is foreign is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want, a truly dominated nation.’’

And consequently in the introduction of ‘’democracy’’ to Africa, the capitalist-exploiter also cleverly included the ‘’liberation of sex’’ as part of a package of ’’democracy’’. And as usual we have fallen prey and swallowed the bait and we are now experiencing the random distribution of condoms in Africa! In fact, the Ministry of Health and NGOs are the culprits since they give contraceptives such as condoms to teenagers of any age upon demand. I have always been greatly disturbed at the so-called ‘’successful’’ indiscriminate distributions of condoms irrespective of age. It is very clear that condom distribution in schools only means   encouraging of teenage pupils to be more and more sexually active.

Here is what Edna Kazonga wrote: ‘’When condoms are distributed in schools, teachers are put in a very awkward situation because one minute they are preaching abstinence and good morals in line with the Zambian culture and the other minute they are telling pupils that in case they have failed to abstain they can go ahead and use the available condom. This is a seemingly contradiction and very confusing to pupils. There is a danger of thinking that it is okay and permissible to be sexually active after all condoms are available. Should we teach the pupil to abstain as per our Zambian Christian values or should we leave it open to say, in case you become sexually active…?’’ This is a clear indication that we as a nation have no solution whatsoever to the current moral degeneration.

Every human grouping has keys to every situation that they preserve which give meaning to the group as its members review their ‘story’ in the drama of life.’’ Any problem has a lost key. Our ancestors were very much aware of moral problems that could arise and hence they made sure that a boy and a girl should never be at close contact with each other and especially in isolation and hence the saying, ‘’Cikwi tapalamana na mulilo’’ i.e., ‘’Don’t put a petrol-soaked cloth near the flames of fire.’’

However, in this current liberated sexual scenario, we see teenagers publically kissing each other and they even go out to dances, cinema shows and other entertainments and bring back the girl later in the night and that is now accepted by the girls’ ‘’modern, educated and civilized’’ parents, since this is within the context of Children’s Rights in accordance with the Human Rights Charter.

I was prompted to find out if condoms were also distributed in the same way in the West. And I obtained a document on a survey of English sexual health report called Public Health England (PHE) Condom Distribution Scheme for 2015/16. And according to this report, condoms are NEVER distributed at random to anybody and irrespective of age, as it is done in Africa. Condoms are distributed through what is called C-Card at any distribution outlet to access free condoms. And the emphasis being on abstinence, the 2015/16 survey showed that only 3 percent of 16-24 year-olds of the population registered for the C-card schemes.

We must first note that strong sex drives have no respect for anybody whether black, white, red etc. And if our minds were not perverted we could ask ourselves if indeed the genuine reason why condoms are distributed at random only in Africa and not in the West is to protect our youngsters from venereal diseases; HIV/AIDS and unnecessary pregnancies! I have always insisted that the capitalist-exploiter leads with truth but never to truth and whereas we have been blinded to look intently and nodding our heads at the cleverly presented physical consequences, the capitalist-exploiter looks far beyond the physical into the spirit world in order to preserve his youngsters from a very deadly consequence known as SOUL DAMAGE. This condition cannot be found in the medical encyclopedia.

I recently stumbled upon the greatest moral scandal that has rocked our nation where our educational system is exposing our very young children to the worst type of moral decay and corruption. I received an elderly woman who told me that her daughter was in tears because of the question that her nine-year old son put to her. I was as well shocked and rushed to our school to look at the Pupil’s Book 4 on ‘’ Basic Integrated science.’’ And on page 7 it reads: ‘’When a man and a woman love each other, they marry and may start a family. The couple makes love by having sexual intercourse. The man inserts his penis into the woman’s vagina. Sperm from the penis travels into the vagina and, if the time is right, a sperm will fertilizer an egg.’’

Then the teacher interpreted to me in Ichibemba as he does to the pupils in order to make sure they fully comprehend what is being taught and it was through the interpretation in Ichibemba that I really felt the gravity of the scandal. This is indeed, cultural genocide, pointing out to the horror of the collapsed moral values in-spite of Zambia having been declared a Christian nation.

In fact the complaint that was brought to me was that a nine-old boy had asked her mother to confirm whether it was true what the boys in higher grades were saying that the woman’s private part (in Ichibemba) had three (named) synonyms! It was really difficult even for me to explain to the grandmother because I too was also shocked. And indeed even traditionally we teach about sex upon the attainment of puberty and not at the tender age of eight years.

Thereafter, the words of the late Mundia Sikatana jumped into my mind: ‘’We are rotten as a nation.’’ (The Post 7th March 2003). Indeed we are comprehensively rotten as a nation because the Church with schools run by the clergy as well teaches such moral decay thereby morally scandalizing, corrupting and destroying the minds of our children! It is difficult for me to understand why the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs has endorsed such a syllabus!

And just like the difference between the West and Africa in condom distributions, now listen to Charles Mwewa a Zambian resident in Canada who in his book, Zambia: Struggles of My People talked about how children in Canada begin to learn about science and technology at an early age and went to advise us ‘’………. Problem-solving education is a must if Zambia is going to compete in the economic and technological marketplace. Zambia needs to expose its progeny to science, technology and mathematics at very tender ages. Zambian children need to be told that science and technology are necessary tools for its development. They need to be exposed to this type of education very early in their academic life and be given ready resources for experimentation in science, technology and mathematics.‘’ And unfortunately, within the Zambian context sex is more of value than science and technology. What shame!

Tanzanian banned pregnant school girls from attending state primary and secondary schools since 1961 and President John Magufuli has affirmed his commitment to this policy, saying school girls who become pregnant must be expelled and not be allowed to return. The World Bank in November 2018 cancelled a US$ 300 million education project due to what was termed ‘’as the country’s controversial policies on pregnant school girls.’’ In another development Denmark froze funding to Tanzania over concerns about policies that threaten gay people. The Times of Zambia of 19th November 2018 reported that the European Union also launched a comprehensive review of its policies toward the East nation over concerns about rights abuses.

The question is why did the leaders in Tanzania ban pregnant school girls from attending state primary and secondary schools? This can be clearly understood if we view it from our own example. It was reported that according to the Forum for African Educationalists of Zambia (FAWEZA) that about 16,300 school girls fall pregnant each year (Daily Nation 27th February 2017). And one of the main contributing factor to this school girls’ sex scandal stems from allowing pregnant school girls attending the same schools with those who have not been pregnant before. ‘’Innocent’’ girls become victims of   teasing and abuse since they are falsely misled that according to tradition if they die ’’barren’’ and never had even a miscarriage then before burial, they are falsely told, they would put a piece of charcoal in their anal passage as a sign that they were indeed useless girls who left the world without even getting pregnant. You can see how effective this distortion can be on the minds of young girls and there is absolutely nothing like this in our various traditions and this has only been created by these ‘’mother school girls.’’ And so it is better to establish separate schools for them.

In another development Denmark froze funding to Tanzania over concerns about policies that threaten gay people. And in this respect the whites have promoted their own Anglo-Saxon morals above God’s moral teachings since the teachings of the Bible, must be regarded by all genuine and sincere Christian believers as the Words from the mouth of God. In the Book of Genesis, Chapter 19, we read that the city of Sodom was destroyed by the Lord because of homosexuality: ‘’Before the guests went to bed, the men of the city surrounded Lot’s house. All the men of the city, both young and old were there. They called out to Lot and asked, ‘Where are the men who came to stay with you tonight? Bring them out to us! The men of Sodom wanted to have sex with them…’’

It is clearly written in the book of Leviticus: ‘’If a man has sexual relations with another man, they have done a disgusting thing, and both shall be put to death.’’ (Leviticus 20:13). And if the Almighty God can pronounce a death sentence for such an offence, it means it is a very serious offence. And centuries later, the apostle Paul severely condemned homosexuality: ‘’…..Because they do this, God has given them over to shameful passions. Even the women pervert the natural use of their sex by unnatural acts. In the same way, the men give up natural sexual relations with women and burn with passion for each other, and as a result they bring upon themselves the punishment they deserve for their wrongdoing.’’ Romans 1:26/27).This actually means the human rights supersede God’s holy Word.

On the other hand, it is therefore clear that the so-called ‘’ democracy’’ is now caught between two sets of contradictory desiderata. On one hand, ‘’democracy’’ means, ‘’respecting other people’s views without necessarily agreeing with them.’’ And in this respect as a British social worker, Tarq Modood working among immigrants said: ‘’Equality is not having to hide or apologize for one’s origins, family or community, but to expect others to respect them and adapt public attitudes and arrangements so that the heritage they represent is encouraged, rather than contemptuously expected to wither away.’’ (Newsweek 15th December 1997).

However, in the current European Union context, ‘’democracy’’ is being re-defined as ‘’the interest of the stronger.’’ And in this respect, one is bound to agree to what Chika Onyeani’s conclusion of Whites telling Africans, ‘’Listen fools, we don’t value and care about your lives and your stupid ideas and primitive ways of life….. I have been accused of being angry. If you know what is going on within the Black race, I ask, would you as an African not be angry too?’’

“ENHANCING HUMAN DEVELOPMENT”

By Hon Davies Mwila

INTRODUCTION

The Vision 2030 objective is that Zambia should become “a prosperous middle-income nation” by 2030.

In order to achieve the above-mentioned strategic objective, Zambia needs to continue _“investing in people through education and training, to ensure job creation and socioeconomic transformation”._

Furthermore, the Seventh National Development Plan (7NDP), which is the country’s blue-print for development towards the attainment of the objectives of 2030 emphasises: _“improved education and skills development are instrumental in creating societies that are better able to respond to social and economic development challenges they face.”_

Consequently, the PF Government under President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is implementing the following programmes to enhance human development, and achieve the abovementioned Vision 2030.

ENHANCING ACCESS TO QUALITY, EQUITABLE AND INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

In line with the 7NDP, the PF Government is making significant progress in infrastructure development; teacher training, recruitment and deployment improvement; equity and inclusive education enhancement; youth and adult literacy expansion and improvement; and policy coordination, planning and information management improvement.

For example, during his address to Parliament on 14th September, 2018, His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, revealed that:

“Through the girl’s education and women’s empowerment and livelihood project, government is supporting vulnerable women and girls. In 2017, 12,445 vulnerable women in 11 districts were empowered with life and business skills as well as provided with grants of k2,000 each. By the end of this year (2018), an additional 21,000 women in 31 districts will be supported.

Further, government is supporting 15,082 girls aged between 14 and 18 years to be retained in school. (The PF) Government is equally committed to the promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities. In this regard, we have continued to mainstream disability in all our programmes. For instance, we are promoting the inclusion of sign language and braille in our various institutions, expanded use of ramps and elevators in public buildings…. I, therefore, call upon the private sector, faith-based organizations and the civil society to also mainstream disability in all their programmes.”

Clearly, the PF Government by implementing the 7NDP programmes is on course to actualise Zambia’s Vision 2030 objective, through developing quality human capital, arising from investments in quality education and skills development.

ENHANCING ACCESS TO SKILLS TRAINING

The PF Government under President Lungu is also implementing various 7NDP strategies aimed at enhancing access to skills training.

In this regard, His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, highlighted the following during his speech to Parliament on 30th September, 2016:

“Human capital development is key for any country to make lasting progress. Zambia is no exception. In addressing human capital development, government will continue to focus on skills development, science, technology and innovation.

In the area of skills development, government will continue to invest in technical and vocational skills that promote self- employment, particularly among the youth. This will enable youths to fully and effectively participate in the economy.

My administration will, therefore, continue with its robust infrastructure development programme for skills development in order to have at least one skills training centre in each district.

_We must deliberately target those who have been to school and those who have not been. No one must be left behind. We must develop a policy to revive apprenticeship training and strengthen internship.”_

With the resolve emphasized by President Lungu above, the PF Government continues to implement various 7NDP strategies such as: secondary school vocational education and training; institution-based learning; open, distance and flexible learning; workplace/on-the-job training; and so on.

Additionally, the 7NDP also states: _“to ensure that learners from poor households access skills training, the Government will establish a vocational skills bursary scheme.”_

President Edgar Chagwa Lungu with regard to bursary scheme issued the following remarks during his address to parliament on 14th September, 2018:

“Government has continued to provide loans and scholarships to learners at all levels of our education system. In 2017, a total of 25,128 university and TEVET students were supported under the loans and scholarships board, the TEVET bursary, the skills development fund and the support to science and technology project.”

The PF Government is also implementing other 7NDP programmes such as the establishment Centres Of Excellence; Trades Training Institutions Operationalization; Training Institutions Rehabilitation and Construction; Alternative Training Mode Promotion; Continuing Professional Development; and Inclusive Vocational Training Promotion.

ENHANCING PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION

The PF Government is cognizant of the fact that public resources in any nation are always limited and therefore, Government cannot single handedly attain its goals without the support of the private sector and other stakeholders, through public-private partnership models and other beneficial models aimed at promoting education quality, relevance and access to every Zambian.

In order to enhance private sector participation in the education sector, the PF Government is providing a conducive environment for private sector participation, while ensuring continuous improvement of education standards and compliance to guidelines by all private sector participants. To achieve this, President Lungu’s administration is implementing various programmes, including: private sector education participation promotion programme; private sector skills development participation promotion programme; private sector youth and adult education participation promotion programme; and the PPP skills development fund implementation programme.

CONTINUOUS REVIEW OF CURRICULUM

In order to enhance curricula relevance for the labour market and ensure global competitiveness of Zambia’s education, the PF Government – in line with the 7NDP – is currently collaborating with various stakeholders to ensure continuous revision of curricula, by implementing effectively the following 7NDP programmes: Curriculum And Materials Development; Pre-Service And In-Service Teacher Training Provision; Curriculum Assessment And Evaluation Enhancement; Standards Monitoring Enhancement; Curriculum Framework Standardization; And Training Equipment Provision.

During his address to parliament on 14th September 2018, President Lungu, revealed the following:

“The Skills Development Fund has been instrumental in financing the review of over 79 curricula in the last year (2017) to align them to industry and the national diversification agenda.”

ENHANCING THE ROLE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

The PF Government is enhancing the role of science, technology and innovation in order to promote productivity, innovation and competitiveness in the Zambian economy, as well as driving the creation of new products and new ways of producing existing products efficiently.

To this end, various 7NDP prescribed programmes, including, the science and technology human capital development programme; science and technology infrastructure development programme; and science, technology and innovation (STI) financing programme, etc. are being implemented.

The PF Government under President Edgar Lungu remains resolute in enhancing the role of science, technology and innovation to enhance human development, as a means of achieving the Vision 2030 objective.

The evidence of PF Government’s unyielding commitment to the abovementioned goal can be gleaned briefly from President Edgar Lungu’s speech to Parliament on 14th September, 2018, where he revealed, among other things, that:

“In the area of science and technology, we (the PF Governemnt) are making progress towards the establishment of the Centre For Nuclear Science and Technology. This centre is not a nuclear power plant but a centre for research in nuclear science and technology. Once operational, the centre will contribute towards enhanced treatment of cancer, irradiation of certain agricultural and mineral products for export as well as other industrial uses. This will also create a centre of excellence which will contribute to academic tourism as well as create jobs.

In this regard, the centre will contribute towards improved revenues realised from exports and make Zambia a nuclear science regional hub. To facilitate the seamless running of the centre by Zambians, a number of young Zambians are already undergoing training in nuclear science and research. This effort is part of our agenda to achieve a smart Zambia as we move towards attaining vision 2030.”

CONCLUSION

The most important resource in the development of any country is human capital. Accordingly, the PF Government is currently improving education and skills development to enhance human development, and by so doing, accelerate the transformation of Zambia into _“a prosperous middle-income nation”_ by 2030.

The next article will illustrate how the PF Government is enhancing human development by improving access to water supply and sanitation, as a way of accelerating the achievement of the Vision 2030 objective.

Organizers of the Yellow Card protests insist it will go on

Laura Miti speaking to Journalists outside the Magistrate Court after acquittal

The organizers of the planned Yellow Card protests have insisted that the protest will proceed after Police denied them a go-ahead.

Lusaka Police Commissioner Nelson Phiri advised the organizers that the Protest against Corruption which was due to be held on Friday cannot go ahead because police will be too busy elsewhere to police the gathering.

The protest is being organized by Activist Pilato, Laura Miti, Musician Maiko Zulu and Gunduzani Mwale.

“We have written back reminding them that the law requires them to give us an alternative date. We wait. Bottom line is that Citizens will be heard,” said Miti.

She added, “We will follow the procedure of trying to make the police understand that we are not begging for a favour but giving them notice that we intend to exercise our constitutional right to be heard about how our country is being run.”

“This protest will be held. Police have the lawful opportunity to suggest when.”

Auctioning of animals in Pemba was too harsh a punishment for the poor farmer-CTPD

CTPD Executive Director Isaac Mwaipopo
CTPD Executive Director Isaac Mwaipopo

The Center for trade Policy and Development has expressed concerned with the manner in which the case involving the slaughtering of the animals of one Pemba Farmer and the subsequent auction of the carcasses of the animals was handled.

CTPD says the organization is particularly disturbed with reports of 8 carcasses that were reportedly missing from the original number of animals that were slaughtered.

“While we have heard that the said animals were burnt and that the vet officials did not need any permission or consent from the farmer to take the action they did, we are of the view that in the interest of transparency and accountability, this action should have been done in an open manner. The slaughter of the animals was a public thing which was all over the media and so should have been all other actions that followed,” said CTPD Executive Director Isaac Mwaipopo.

“Another thing we wish to express concerns on is the prolonged ban of the movement of livestock. While we appreciate the efforts that the government has put in place to contain the spread of the Foot and Mouth Disease, we should also not be oblivious to the fact that the livelihood of most of the farmers in the two areas largely depends on agriculture visa-vis crop farming and livestock farming,” he said.

“As a country we are all alive to the fact that the 2018/2019 farming season did not go well in the southern half of the country.”

Mr Mwaipopo said Zambia is expecting very low yields from the southern half of the country and that this means the government will be overwhelmed to provide relief food.

“Against this background, it is our considered view that the only window of hope for the farmers in the two affected provinces lies in their ability to maximize revenue generation for their livestock. As such a prolonged ban on the movement of their only viable source of income is suicidal not just for the farmers affected but for the government too.”

“As CTPD, we would like to call upon the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries to step up and address the problem in Southern and Eastern Province with the urgency that it deserves. If left unchecked it may escalate into a national crisis.”

He said the affected farmers who are growing impatient every passing day may resort to smuggling their animals out of the affected provinces as a survival strategy.

Mr Mwaipopo said this can be prevented by a more proactive approach on the part of the government.

“We would also like to urge our government to invest more money in the veterinary departments of our country. Animal health and welfare requires substantial investments.”

He added, “We have observed with sadness that we tend to be very reactive every time a crisis befalls us as opposed to being proactive. We know as a country that we are so prone to tick borne diseases.”

“This is the more reason we ought to invest in technologies that can control ticks. It would be a bad idea to roll out a program of sinking several dip tanks in all constituencies and farming camps. This should also go hand in hand with the equipping the veterinary departments all over the country with the right tools and support systems as they carry out their work.”

Mr Mwaipopo said CTPD knows that the Zambian government knows the huge potential in the livestock sector that is why they informed the country not so long ago of a huge market for goats and sheep in Saudi Arabia.

“If we are to tap into that market, we will need to invest more in animal disease control. Available statistics indicate that Fisheries and livestock play an important role in Zambia’s agriculture sector, together accounting for 35 percent of the agricultural GDP. With the right incentives and support structure in place, the livestock sector can make even more meaningful contributions to the country’s overall GDP.”

UPND is not a dictatorial party, claims are unfounded

Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) in Eastern Province has dismissed accusations by Patriotic Front PF Secretary General, Davies Mwila that it is a dictatorial party.

During the PF provincial conference in Chipata last week, Mr. Mwila alleged that UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has denied his members a chance to exercise their democratic right to vote by imposing himself on them as a life president.

Mr. Mwila also challenged leaders from other political parties especially the UPND to emulate the PF which relies on democracy and inclusiveness.

But in a rebuttal, UPND Eastern Province spokesperson, Victor Mbuzi says Mr. Mwila’s sentiments are unfounded because his party has held elections time and again.

Mr. Mbuzi alleges that it is the PF which has failed to accommodate people with divergent views as evidenced by the barring of some people to contest in the recently held provincial election.

He says had the PF been democratic as it claims, there was going to be no candidate who pulled out of the race like Elias Daka fondly known as ‘Eriboma’ did because it was marred with violence and intimidation.

Beaumelle impressed with junior players promotion to Chipolopolo

3

Ex-Zambia national team boss Patrice Beaumelle has saluted the junior players he left progression into the Chipolopolo setup following Sunday’s result against his side Morocco.

The Morocco assistant coach left the Zambia job in 2014 to reunite with his bench mate Herve Renard after the French duos’ successful second stint with Chipolopolo whom they guided to 2012 AFCON victory.

Striker Patson Daka and midfielder Enock Mwepu, who formed the base of the Zambia U17 team natured in 2013 during their reign, including striker Mwape Musonda and midfielder Augustine Mulenga who were fringe players in that same period, on Sunday formed the starting XI that beat Morocco 3-2 away in Marrakech.

“I saw a lot of young boys who when I left they were just Under 17 and Under 20 payers and today they can show that they can play for Chipolopolo. Congratulations and it was exactly the kind of game we were expecting because, when we were planning, we wanted this kind of game,” Beaumelle said.

“Zambia is not part of this AFCON but it is still a very strong team in Africa.”

Musonda and Mwepu both scored a goal each in the victory against The Atlas Lions in the friendly to hand Zambia its debut away victory over Morocco after eight attempts.

Meanwhile, Zambia left Morocco on Monday for The United Arab Emirates at the end of their eleven day training camp in Casablanca that also saw them take a short trip to Spain to play Cameroon in a friendly on June 9 in Madrid that Chipolopolo lost 2-1.

Zambia play their final friendly on June 19 in Abu Dhabi against Cote d’Ivoire in transit back to Lusaka.

Zambia Police to engage all political players ahead of Katuba By Elections

Police in Central Province has aid that they will engage all political players in the run up to the July 30th Katuba Parliamentary by-election.

Central Province Police Commissioner Chola Katanga said that this will be done to avoid any form of violence during and after the election.

Mr. Katanga told ZNBC News that Police want to ensure the election is violence free.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set July 30th as a date for the Katuba by election and other local government by elections.

The Katuba seat fell vacant after the death of Member of Parliament Patricia Mwashingwele May 2 after a short illness.

Meanwhile, -The Anti-Voter Apathy (AVAP) Executive Director, Richwell Mulwani, says his organisation has already started conducting voter education with electorates in Katuba constituency ahead of the parliamentary by-election slated for July 30, 2019.

Mr. Mulwani says it is important that people especially youths are reminded of their right to vote and the need to uphold peace before, during and after elections.

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, the AVAP Executive Director, indicated that his organisation will hold a number of meetings in Katuba constituency in Chibombo district and Lubwa ward in Kitwe, to ensure that electorates are fully engaged in the electoral process.

He noted that it is also important that electorates take keen interest to monitor nominations for their preferred candidates as they prepare for the elections.

And Mr Mulwani says his organisation will engage more stakeholders to help with educating young people especially, as they are more vulnerable and are usually used as tools of violence.

He observed that since Katuba is near Lusaka, it is easy for youths to go to Katuba and to cause distractions hence the need to sensitise the people in the area not to entertain any form of violence.

Mr Mulwani emphasised the need to help youths realise and understand that they are the country’s future leaders and should therefore be at the center of promoting peace.

He also noted that AVAP will this time around scale up its voter education in Katuba, as most people shun voting especially when there are cases of violence being recorded.

Meanwhile, Mr Mulwani has also stated that his organisation will further engage political party leaders on the need to uphold the electoral code of conduct during the by elections.

The Katuba Constituency seat fell vacancy after the demise of the area Member of Parliament Patricia Mwachingwele.

WEEKEND SCORECARD: Lwandamina-Kambole will be had to replace

4

Zesco United coach George Lwandamina has conceded that outgoing striker Lazarus Kambole will be a difficult player to replace.

Kambole is leaving Zesco after six years with the seven-time FAZ Super Division champions to join struggling South African giants Kaizer Chiefs on a three-year deal.

The striker scored 25 goals for both club and country in 2018 and another 16 so far this season in all competition.

“Definitely, on that one we have to do something and I don’t know where we have to look to whether it is locally or internationally,”Lwandamina said.

“Because the standards that he attained were high standards, so if we are to get any replacement he must be better than Kambole.

“And if you look into our own league is there any person like Kambole?”

A global campaign to advocate for a world free of GBV for the next generation of children launches across Africa on the “Day of the African Child”

In commemoration of the International Day of the African Child, a global social media campaign has launched across Africa to advocate for a world free of Gender Based Violence (GBV) for the next generation of young people and children.

Not Our Story, Change It! is an eight-country led campaign that aims to raise awareness on the need to create a world free of GBV for the next generation of children. The initiative was conceptualised through a multi-stakeholder initiative across several institutions and countries that have come together with the aim to contribute towards increasing discussions and action around creating a world safer for children by working towards eliminating GBV.

The launch on the Day of the African Child with the theme “Children’s Rights First” is an appropriate time to join the fight to safeguard the future of children around the world and forefront the topic of the effect of GBV on children.
The campaign kicked off at the Tunis Forum For Gender Equality in Tunisia in April 2019 and today the eight member countries – Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Somaliland, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and Sweden – will launch the campaign on social media simultaneously across the continent with a pledge to fight for children’s rights under the campaign’s “Ambassador Programme”. The campaign managers are collaborating with social change influencers across the eight countries and the globe to engage the world in the discussion and stimulate
action and change.
”The Not Our Story. Change it! campaign is unique in the sense that is putting the children´s rights in the forefront of the discussion on gender-based violence and that it provides an inspiring vision to work for – a world free from gender-based violence. Everyone need to play their part for this to happen. Our wonderful team from Africa and Sweden is dedicated to work for such a transformation through this campaign and through our organisations
who are affilitated to this partnership”, says Ingvar Ronnback on half of the initiating team.
The genesis of the project was conceived through Yvonne Anyango from Kenya and Ingvar Ronnback from Sweden whom have worked together since 2007 in a number of projects funded by Swedish governmental agencies and other partners. Yvonne Anyango is the director of CASDA – Cooperation Arena for Sustainable development in Africa. Ingvar Rönnbäck is the founder of the company ADEP – Another Development Perspective Ltd and the non-profit think tank Another Development Foundation.
I am delighted to be part of this exciting Campaign. It speaks to my life aspiration of having a generation where all children both girls and boys are free from all forms of violence and enjoy their child hood and rights. As we continue to encourage a positive response to ending Gender Based Violence I would like to challenge humanity from all walks of life to rise up and be a part of this”, said co-initiator Yvonnge Anyango from Kenya.
The unique approach to create a collective of partners with diverse background for one social change cause will allow the campaign to have an organic far reach and impact.
Secondary messaging has also been created to further define and target the reach. Depending on what applies, the “Change It” tagline could be modified to contextualise the message that include: Change our laws, Change our mindset, Change a life, Change our choices, Change our action.
“We can’t ignore it anymore, gender based violence against children has become a major problem due to negative cultural beliefs and practices, existing gender norms, and economic, social, and gender inequalities. It was important for me to lend my voice to the Not My Story campaign because as a mother and woman of influence I feel its my duty to advocate and ensure that our children feel safe and live in a GBV free world”, said Lulu Wood, who is one of the Zambia Campaign Ambassadors.
The ambassadors have been selected across the eight countries and will collaborate to promote the campaign.

“The campaign is designed in a simple but impactful way to allow organisations and individuals with common goals to easily adapt and adopt the campaign. Toolkits for media and action information will be available on the website for people to use should they choose to be a part of this great cause”, said Samba Yonga media strategist and Zambia country partner representative for the campaign.

2020 HIV/AIDS US funding unveiled

Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya, says Zambia is making steady progress with attaining HIV epidemic control.

Dr. Chilufya says the country has been pursuing the epidemic control of HIV as well as fighting to stop HIV infections by encouraging treatment which has been supported by the United States government and the Zambian government.

The Minister was speaking in Lusaka this morning, during the announcement of the 2020 HIV/AIDS 421 million United States Dollar American funding, through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), in support of the joint goal of reaching the HIV epidemic control in Zambia by 2020.

Dr. Chilufya noted that in 2003, Zambia had 3,500 people living with HIV but with close to a four million investment by the American government, the country is now at 1 million out of the estimated 1. 2 million people living with HIV, which he said is a best way to stop new infections.

And the Minister of Health states that Zambia is also making steady progress towards achieving the UNAIDS targets towards eradicating HIV infections.

Dr. Chilufya has revealed that with support from the American people and the American government, Zambia is now at 84-83-89 towards meeting the 90 -90-90 UNAIDS treatment target to help end the AIDS epidemic.

The Minister has since noted that, the funding of the US $421 million by the American government to Zambia represents an increase by US $36 million compared to the funding in the previous year.

Dr. Chilufya, thanked the United States government for the continued support to Zambia’s health sector, saying it demonstrates the warm bilateral relations that exists between the two countries and also the confidence that the American government has in President Edgar Lungu’s commitment to promote good health among the Zambian citizenry.

And United States Ambassador to Zambia Daniel Foote, noted that America has over the past 16 years contributed almost 4 billion dollars towards controlling HIV in Zambia which demonstrates the commitment that the American people have towards a strong and healthy Zambia.

Ambassador Foote, called on the Zambian government to allocate more resources to the health sector to address other diseases such as Tuberculosis, malaria and also maternal mortality.

He stated that less than 15 years ago, less than 5,000 Zambians were on anti-retro-viral treatment but today about 2 million Zambians have been captured which has saved a million plus lives.

He added that there is an accomplished change with the HIV landscape in Zambia and a lot of people are more people are living healthier lives.

The U.S Ambassador added that once the epidemic control is achieved, it will be easy for the country to eradicate HIV by 2030.

He was also quick to mention that it is critical that people in Zambia know their HIV status and stick to medication in order to control the epidemic.

The Ambassador made a similar plea to religious leaders, to encourage their congregations, to take the same actions and recognise the commitment that the Zambian government has portrayed towards making progress in achieving HIV epidemic control by 2020.

Islamic Council President in court

Islamic Supreme Council of Zambia President Sugzo Zimba and two others have appeared in court on 13 charges among them giving false information to an Immigration officer.

The suspects are further accused of harbouring prohibited immigrants, aiding and abetting illegal immigrants.

Mr. Zimba and his co-accused Egeh Hussein and Omar Muhammud both Somali Nationals appeared before Lusaka Magistrate Felix Kaoma.

In one of the counts the Suspects are alleged to have procured an Immigration Visa for a Somali national by purporting that Ifrah Hassan was visiting Zambia to attend an intercultural competence course at Kook college of International Studies when in fact not.

The suspects could however not take plea because there was no one to translate English into Somali for one of the suspects.

It was at this point that Lusaka Magistrate Felix Kaoma adjourned the matter to Wednesday this week for plea.

Whilst adjourning the matter, Magistrate Kaoma told Mr. Zimba that his bond has been extended while the other two accused will remain in custody.

Meanwhile, Mr. Zimba screamed at Journalists who were filming him outside the court room, asking whether they have been sent.

NDC questions Tasila Lungu’s wealth

The opposition National Democratic Congress has called for investigations into Tasila Lungu’s sudden wealth.

In a statement, the NDC in Lusaka says prior to 2015, Tasila was not known to have any source of wealth.

The opposition party says Tasila should be subjected to a lifestyle audit.

“It has come to light that a secret court case has been ongoing, and a garden boy was imprisoned for having stolen K200,000 from Tasila Lungu’s house. Tasila who refers to herself as a philanthropist (a rich donor) has for a while now been showing signs of having vast wealth,” the NDC says.

The party says Tasila recently sunk 100 boreholes out of pocket in Eastern Province and that she has been handing out donations valued at millions of kwacha in Kuku compound and elsewhere.

“Prior to 2015 she had no known profitable businesses. So the question is where is she getting all this wealth from? How is she able to afford all those luxury vehicles she’s been seen driving in Lusaka?”

“Why is she keeping such large sums of cash in the house, why is she scared to take it to the bank? How about all those luxury properties she’s built everywhere, where is she getting the funds? Where did she get the cash from?”

“Who are these secret donors and well wishers she always refers to when making millions in donations? What interest do these donors have in her activities? How about Zesco, what’s the story behind the transformer oil contracts?”

The NDC says Tasila should understand that the hoarding of large sums of cash in a house is an offence under the Penal Code.

“That garden boy did not just stumble on that pile of cash, he knew that there was significant financial transactions occurring in that house. It’s not even known yet the total amount of cash hoarded in the house, we only know about the small piece the garden boy took for himself.”

It said these are the same illicit financial activities that the FIC has been pointing out.

“Along the chain of money laundering they transfer funds to a law firm and then huge cash withdrawals are made and given to unknown beneficiaries. These individuals all need to be investigated and subjected to lifestyle audits. If their wealth is clean they should not have a problem with disclosing the source of all of this money,” the party said.
