Gemfields, the world’s biggest emerald miner has found a gem that weighs more than 1.1 kilograms at its mine in Lufwanyama in Zambia.

The 5,655-carat stone found earlier this month at the Kagem mine will be sold at auction in Singapore in November, Gemfields Group Ltd. said in a statement.

The stone named Inkalamu is almost twice the size of the world’s biggest ever rough diamond, the Cullinan, discovered near Pretoria in South Africa in 1905.

Still, it’s unlikely to be worth anywhere near as much since large emeralds are far more common and are hard to value.

For years, Gemfields had a pineapple-sized emerald locked in a safe as it didn’t know how much it was worth.

Emerald prices have climbed in recent years as Gemfields boosted advertising in a bid to expand the market for the green stones.

Emeralds were previously mainly produced by artisanal miners, leaving retailers without a consistent supply.

Gemfields, which also produces rubies in Mozambique, was taken over last year by South African commodities investment firm Pallinghurst Resources Ltd.

Reopening of NRDC excites students umbrella motherbody

THE Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU), an umbrella body of students Unions in Zambia, has welcomed the decision by Government and the National Resources Development College (NRDC) to reopen the College this Wednesday and has since called on students and Management to always pursue dialogue in resolving problems that lead to demonstrations and premature closure of institutions of higher learning.

ZANASU Information and Publicity Secretary, Assa Williey, has commended the Ministries of Agriculture, Higher Education and NRDC Management for reaching a decision, which she says, has been made in the best interest of students as indefinite closure of NRDC can have adverse impact on student progression and the reputation of the institution.

“In the last few days, ZANASU had been working in the background with students at NRDC and visited the institution to persuade management to reopen the institution and we thank NRDC students for remaining calm and focused,” stated Ms. Williey.

ZANASU has, however, reminded authorities that closure of institutions of higher learning when problems arise does not resolve core problems that gives rise to discontent among students but has called for students and authorities to always engage each other in honest dialogue to resolve problems before they escalate into unnecessary demonstrations.

ZANASU has further stated that they are aware that Zambia Institute for Business and Information Technology College (ZIBSIP) in Kitwe has also remained closed and have called for intervention by government to have the college reopen.

Ms. Williey has reiterated that ZANASU remains resolute in its call for recognition and strengthening of students’ unions as a vehicle in which authorities and management can have an equal platform to dialogue.

“The existence and respect for Students’ Unions in institutions of higher learning must be encouraged and viewed as platform for which authorities can effectively engage students in redressing problems that affect them,” she said.

ZANASU has since called on Government to expedite the process of allowing activities of students’ unions in other institutions of higher learning such as Copperbelt University, Chalimbana University, Nkrumah University, among other public institutions that are rum without student leadership.

17 countries in Africa have better overall governance than Zambia

17 countries in Africa have better overall governance than Zambia, the 2018 Mo Ibrahim Index of African governance shows.

The latest 2018 Mo Ibrahim Index of African governance shows that Zambia ranks 18 out of 54 countries on the continent when it comes to governance over the past 10 years.

According to the index, which measured human development, national security, business environment, rule of law, among other qualities of governance, saw Zambia gather 56.2 out of 100 points available.

At 79.5 point, Mauritius leads governance on the continent, while Somalia, with 13.6 points is the worst-governed state in Africa.

Seychelles, Namibia, Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda, Tunisia, Botswana, Carpe Verde, all made it into the top ten best-governed countries in Africa.

Mo Ibrahim, Sudanese-British billionaire, who unveiled the report said the continent, with an average age of 19 is experiencing some demographic shift, which should be an advantage, but may be squandered by African leaders.

He added that despite growth in the continent’s gross domestic product (GDP), there has been corresponding sustainable economic opportunity for the teeming youth on the continent.

“Our continent is faced with unprecedented demographic growth. Key governance areas are not progressing fast enough to keep up with rising demands, and more specifically to answer the growing expectations of Africa’s youth, who are now forming the majority of our continent, and still expected to rise by almost 20% in the next decade,” Ibrahim said.

“Education scores have fallen in half of the 54 African countries over the last five years. Progress in Participation & Human Rights is undermined by a closing of the civil and political space. While Africa’s combined GDP has increased by almost 40% over the last decade, average progress.”

Rwanda overtook Mauritius to become the most business-friendly country on the continent, while Nigeria lagged behind at the 27th position.

“Fifteen countries out of the 34 who register progress in Overall Governance over the last decade even manage to accelerate their pace of improvement in the last five years.

Among those, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, and Kenya display the most impressive progression, stepping up from 41st, 25th and 19th to 22nd, 15th and 11th ranks over the past decade.

There are also recent and welcome improvements in Rule of Law and Transparency & Accountability, even if scores in the latter are still low,” Ibrahim said.

Nkana:We will miss Idris Mbombo

Nkana are moving on after the sudden departure of key Congolese striker Idriss Mbombo.

Mbombo is reported to have signed for Sudanese giants Al Hilal for two years after spending the 2018 season on loan at Nkana.

Nkana chief executive officer Charles Chakatazya said Kalampa regrets Mbombo’s departure but have adequate cover for the man who scored 21 league goals this year.

“I think Idriss Mbombo helped the team. We will miss his service but we have 28 players and all the players are important,” Chakatazya said.

Nkana are preparing to compete in the CAF Champions League after finishing runners up in the 2018 FAZ Super Division campaign.

“I think we have enough cover for him. If you look at the number of strikers remaining at the club they are all seasoned players. Our supporters should not be worried,” he said.

A month and some days were left on Mbombo’s loan deal at Nkana prior to his acrimonious departure from Wusakile.

The Swedish government has given the Dairy Association of Zambia (DAZ) US $2 Million for the implementation of the Digital Information Management System (DIMS).

The funds are meant to help the growth of the value milk chain especially small scale farmers’ access to goods and services.

Speaking when he briefed the media in Lusaka today, DAZ Executive Director Jeremiah Kasalo said the programme will be piloted for a period of two years.

Mr. Kasalo said depending on the outcome the programme, it will upscale to a wider area and probably longer period of time.

He stated that currently the programme is being implemented to 30 out of 67 zones of milk collection centers across the country.

Mr. Kasalo said the current consumption is 36 liters per person per year which culminates into 500 liters per person per year.

He said there is need to create about 200 milk collection centres on top of the already existing 74 milk collection centres.

Any electricity tariffs formulation should be well explained to the consumers-Chamber of Mines

Zambia Chamber of Mines President Nathan Chishimba during an interview on Radio Phoenix recently

Chamber of Mines president Nathan Chishimba says any electricity tariffs formulation should be well explained to the consumers.

Chisshimba said lack of transparency makes reliable tariffs formulation difficult.

He said this at a CEC media Capacity Workshop at the Garden Court Hotel in Kitwe.

“Formulate tariffs that are transparent. The lack of transparency makes reliable tariffs formulation difficult. We can’t have a formal basis of tariffs. Cost of producing electricity is not know,” Chishimba said.

He said the the mines do not deprive the Zambian people power.

Chishimba said the problem is that Zambia has not invested in power generation.

“Mines do not deprive Zambians power. The problem is not the mines energy usage which is within global norms, but Zambia’s small installed electricity base. We have not invested in power generation. We invested hasty in the new projects. These projects are excessive priced. Uncompetively priced new power projects, sad for the country. All these investors we are inviting have a basis.”

“The mining industry is committed to the principle of paying electricity tariffs that reflect the cost of an efficient, internationally competitive power supply service. Reforms must be respectful of existing legally binding agreements and achored on a robust objective regulatory regime,” said Chishimba.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Energy Corporation Chief Executive Officer Owen Silavwe says the company has started supplying power to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“CEC is not a middleman. We have invested US $600 million. We are not a middle and invest in sweet talk. We have invested in serious assets that require huge working capital. We require a return for the investment. Because of these investment, we require serveral returns yearly if not monthly. We put in US $24 million every year in the investment to maintain.”

“We have started supplying power to the DRC. 20 percent of our gross margin come from DRC from supply power to the mines. We invest in generations. In the future, we invest in solar, hydro and wind energy. These are some of thr services that we will invest in,” Silavwe said.

And Northwestern Energy Corporation Limited managing Director Andrew Kamanga called for more platers in thr transmission of energy in order to make the sector more viable on the market.

addresses by Mr Sikota Wina at Inter-Continental Hotel in Lusaka

Freedom Fighter and Politician Mama Chibesa Kankasa has died.

Chief Government spokesperson Dora Siliya confirmed in a tweet that Mama Kankasa 82 died in South Africa this morning.

Ms. Siliya said Mama Kankasa will be remembered among pioneers of women politics.

Mama Kankasa was evacuated to South Africa for specialised medical treatment two weeks ago after an illness

And according to a statement later released by the Ministry of Information, Zambia, as a nation, will always be appreciative of the role Mrs Kankasa played before and after independence and will be forever indebted to her service.

Mrs Kankasa was born on 23rd March, 1936 and joined politics at a tender age of 19. She married Mr Timothy Kankasa in 1952 and went on to become one of the most known female politicians in Zambia.

Mrs Kankasa was not only a young female freedom fighter when Zambia fought for independence but was a charismatic fighter for the rights of fellow women and children. She dressed elegantly and popularised the Chitenge dress that matched with her characteristic head dress.

As the first female Member of the Central Committee and Chairperson of the Women’s league, Mrs Kankasa offered distinguished service to her party UNIP and was an icon to many young female politicians.

Known to many as Mama Kankasa, she worked with former First Lady Betty Kaunda and Ms Julia Chikamoneka during the freedom struggle and was the first Zambian High Commissioner to Kenya after independence.

As recent as the last elections in 2016, Mrs Kankasa encouraged women to take part in the elections at various levels.

She said women should not leave politics to men, but participate at an equal level with their male counterparts.

Mrs Kankasa died today at 10:30 hours in Avrwyp Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa where she has been receiving treatment after being evacuated there on 6th October, 2018.

Government will announce the dates for repatriation of the remains of the UNIP stalwart and funeral arrangements in due course.

ZANASU Hosting SADC Students Summit In Zambia, An Embarrassment On Nkandu Luo

Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo
Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo

Former Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) Vice President Prince Ndoyi has described the opportunity given to ZANASU to host the Southern African Student Union (SASU) summit in 2019 as an indictment on Higher Education Minister Professor Nkandu Luo whom he said should be embarrassed that the union she labelled illegal has won Zambia international acclaim.

And Ndoyi has called on former student leaders to support ZANASU by collectively voicing out their encouragement to the student body.

Ndoyi who is now a principal policy analyst in the office of the National Secretary at the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) observed that the move by SASU implies that the Zambian government has been recognised in advancing the welfare of students in the region and that anything less than support from government would negatively affect not only ZANASU standing in the region but Zambia as a whole.

He said any funny gymnastics from the Higher Education Minister to prevent ZANASU from hosting the SASU summit would imply that President Lungu supports her all out attack on students unions, banning their existence and exterminating the critical voices of students of which he believes the opposite is the truth.

“We all await the position of government on this milestone achievement. Because by implication the Zambian government has been impliedly recognised as making strides in advancing the welfare of students in the region especially during the liberation struggle. This opportunity given to ZANASU is not in isolation but a collective achievement, and therefore exposes our Minister of Higher Education on all accounts.

“This is an indictment on the minister who has gone on an all out attack on students unions, banning their existence and exterminating the critical voices of students,” he said.

The out spoken young politician warned that the event is not political but that it will turn political if Prof Luo tries to be funny something he said would reflect badly on President Edgar Lungu.

“This is not a political event, but I want to warn her that the moment our Minister of Higher Education will try any funny gymnastics this issue will now become political and reflect badly on President Lungu who until now I believe doesn’t agree with her entirely on this issue of banning students activities at the main three public universities.

“Isn’t this an embarrassment on Madam Nkandu Luo, that the ZANASU she calls illegal has won Zambia an international acclaim on students academic freedoms? Refusing to host this summit, is also in a way denying Zambia’s role in the liberation struggle. Because this decision by the SASU Executive was arrived purely in recognition of that fundamental role Zambia played especially students unions in the liberation of the region,” he said.

He further called on former student leaders to protect the milestone in the country’s student’s politics by supporting ZANASU and ensuring that the event is successfully hosted.

He urged PF Deputy Media Director Antonio Mwanza who is a current honorary member of ZANASU to categorically come and support the hosting of the summit.

“We want to hear the voices of former students leaders come out strongly here who are also former ZANASU leaders themselves, Cornelius Mweetwa, Steve Kyengula, Christopher Kangombe, Antonio Mwanza. Fortunately the current PF Deputy Media Director Antonio Mwanza is a current honorary member of ZANASU as bestowed in the last congress of 2017 for his impeccable leadership in the students movement during his tenure as UNZASU president.

The young leader has since called on Minister of Higher Education Nkandu Luo to let go of her past differences with ZANASU.

“I want to take advantage of the same to humbly call upon our Minister to reconcile with ZANASU, let the bitter ends go, and we collectively open a new chapter,” he said.

Ndoyi was reacting to the announcement by the SADC students regional body SASU yesterday to host end of year regional executive summit by ZANASU in Lusaka Zambia in December, while sitting in Johannesburg South Africa.

I will not give up -Miyanda Katiwa

Happier Times; Miyanda inspecting her then vegetable farm

Prominent farmer and celebrated Human Resources Practitioner Miyanda Katiwa has vowed not to give up after the bank reportedly grabbed her assets.

Some media reports have indicated that Stanbic Bank has grabbed Miyanda’s assets such as her Tomato farm, equipment and vehicles after she allegedly failed to pay back her loans.

The reports further indicated that Miyanda has apparently fled to her native Zimbabwe as her debts keep mounting.

A check at her Pamushana Farms over the weekend found the once busy Tomato and vegetable farm deserted with no activity.

But Miyanda who deactivated her social media accounts after the story broke has now resurfaced assuring her friends and followers that she will bounce back.

She vowed to “make lemonade from these lemons” adding that she has an entrepreneurial spine that is made of steel which is unbreakable, unshakeable and unstoppable.

Below is her full statement

My Facebook family

I want to take a moment to convey my most sincere gratitude to everyone who has stood firmly with me during this little bump in my entrepreneurial journey.

For every person who called to check on me, every email, WhatsApp message, Instagram DM, tweet and screenshots I have received leaves me speechless by the love and support from my fellow countrymen and women and indeed those amazing supporter’s around the world. Until now I didn’t realise the extent and positive impact that my life has had on the lives of so many people.

I have walked this journey as an entrepreneur for 14 years, those who have known me since I started know that I have faced and overcome immense challenges through out my journey.

Those who know me well also know that my entrepreneurial spine is made of steel, unbreakable, unshakeable and unstoppable

A lioness no matter how skillful a hunter she is goes hunting knowing very well that a zebra’s kick can break its jaw or a Buffalo’s horn can rip its stomach. When a lioness gets wounded she does not give up hunting because she has cubs(children) to feed, the hunt must and will go on.

The measure of success of an entrepreneur It is not by the number of times they fall but whether they choose to give up, curl up in the corner, blame God, cry and curse God or whether they choose to wake up, dress up, show up and give it another shot.

I am still working as hard as I have always done, I have no intention of crying, or feeling sorry for myself, I am never one to give up because I know God restores that which the locusts and cankerworms have stolen.

Allow to me to make lemonade from these lemons I hold in my hand and from the stones thrown at me I am making stepping stones back to my greatness because that is my God given destiny.

Thank you for your prayers, the emotional and financial support is indeed overwhelming and a testimony that God is still on the throne.

Now let’s get back to work because bills must still be paid, debts cleared, children educated and jobs must be created.

God bless you all and have a beautiful day full of love and success.

SADC students call on China to support provision of quality education

Students of higher learning in Southern Africa who met at the 2018 Regional Education Summit in Johannesburg have advised African and Chinese leaders to ensure that Africa-China relations are strengthened to go beyond pursuit to make profits by China to contributing towards education of young Africans and building capacities among student in the region by way of provision of grants.

Over 30 leaders from umbrella bodies of students unions in Southern Africa Development Countries (SADC) had been meeting at Witwatersrand University from 25th to 29th October, 2018 discussing challenges of academic freedoms and funding of higher education in the region under the theme, “Democratisation of Education in SADC.”

The Unions also noted that African Governments must commit themselves to budgetary allocation of 20 percent of the national budget towards funding of education in line with the Cairo Protocol on Education which many countries are signatories to. SADC students expressed concerns that funding of education and health in most countries has been on the decline as compared to funds allocated towards servicing of debts and other areas such as acquisition of security gadgets abused by the State Police in different countries top oppress students and their own citizens.

Students have said governments in the region must unite their efforts in negotiating debts being acquired by their countries from countries such as China to include a package of grants to fund higher education. The students have since called on both governments in the region to prioritise allocation of resources and the private sectors to contribute towards funding of higher education.

Meanwhile, Zambia, though the Zambia National Students’ Union (ZANASU) has been selected by the Southern African Students’ Union (SASU) to host a full SASU Executive Meeting by the end of 2018 and further host the 2019 Regional Education Summit. The executive meeting is meant to assess the preparedness and commitment of the country to host the 2019 Regional Education Summit.

Zambia’s successful bid, which comes at the time of Zambia’s 54th Independence Celebration has been described as a way for the region to recognise the role Zambia and the students of higher learning played in the liberation of the entire Southern Africa.
SASU Acting Secretary General Maxwell Dhlamini said Zambian students and Zambians generally have been key to mobilising, hosting and uniting freedom fighters to fight a noble cause and the struggle must take a new twist where black governments and their students must work together to champion academic freedoms, promotion of self-governance and strengthening the role of students in national governance as the country did during the liberation struggle for SADC

Inonge Wina calls for end to land encroachment

Vice President Inonge Wina listens to Col Buumba Zyele during the tour of Simon Mwewa Market

Vice President Inonge Wina has called for concerted efforts from both the village headmen and the Chiefs if encroachments in the boundaries of traditional land are to be curtailed.

Mrs Wina said encroachments should be curtailed because settlers need to be given authority by the traditional leadership before they could settle in a chiefdom.

The Vice President said this when she paid a courtesy call on Chief Chipepo of the Lenje people at Kabaka Community School in Kapiri Mposhi district.

And Chief Chipepo who spoke through a representative Benson Chanda, raised some concerns which include a boundary dispute in his area which he said had been going on for a long time.

The traditional leader also appealed for extension of the road which is under construction in his chiefdom stating that it was of economic importance to his area.

And in response, the Vice President thanked Chief Chipepo for allocating part of his land for the resettlement scheme.

Mrs Wina told the traditional leader that government has prioritised working on the road to easy the movement of people and produce to the market.

She further assured the Chief that government would find resources to extend the road so that it goes beyond the resettlement.

The Vice President was in Kapiri Mposhi to visit Lukanda Resettlement Scheme which has a population of about 6,000 people.

Chishimba Kambwili labels Lusaka lawyer Lewis Mosho a joke for demanding K 5 million

FILE: Chishimba Kambwili addressing Journalists at his house

Roan Member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili has asked Lusaka lawyer Lewis Mosho of Messers Lewis Nathan Advocates to stop joking by demanding for a K 5 Million as costs over a single application he made before the High Court.

This was in the matter in which Mr Kambwili and Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Gary Nkombo wanted to be joined to the impeachment case before the High Court which was dismissed on grounds that the two parliamentarians had not laid sufficient grounds to guarantee the court to join them to the case as joinders .

According to a letter addressed to Mr Kambwili’s lawyers Messers Malambo and Co., Messers PNP, Messers Keith Mweemba and Messers Christopher Mundia Mr Mosho is claiming for a payment of K 5 Million which is to be settled within 48 hours or he will without any further notice institute bankruptcy proceedings against Mr Kambwili and Mr Nkombo upon which through the bankruptcy order their parliamentary seats shall be declared vacant by the Speaker of the National Assembly.

But Mr Kambwili has described Mr Mosho’s demand of that sum as a greatest joke of the year.

“You go to court and make one application to be joinder to the case and it is dismissed, you ask for a K 5 Million, I could have been a lawyer and I think all lawyers could have been flying by now”, Mr Kambwili has said.

“Tell Mosho to behave like a lawyer and not a politician because lawyers are supposed to live above God and have integrity in everything they do but if Mosho wants to come on the political scene he will be bruised because we are ready for him,” He has said.

Mr Kambwili says he is aware that Mr Mosho is a President Edgar Lungu’s sarogate and a friend who does some transactions for the head of state but his time for reckoning will soon come.

On May, 24 this year the Lusaka High Court dismissed an application for a joinder by Mr Kambwili and Mr Nkombo in which the duo wanted to join the proceedings in the impeachment case as interested parties but the court dismissed their application and awarded K 5 Million costs to the petitioners lawyers.

Meanwhile the case in which Kambwili and others are charged with 34 counts of being in possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime has been adjourned to November 30.

The matter which is in relation to Mwamona Technical Services Limited a company suspected to be owned by Kambwili could not take off because the Magistrate – in – Principal Resident Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile is out of jurisdiction.

The suspect is jointly charged with his son Mwamba and some representatives of Mwamona Technical Services Limited.
