Sinkamba concedes defeat, as the Big Wait Continues at Results Centre

GREEN Party Presidential Candidate Peter Sinkamba
GREEN Party Presidential Candidate Peter Sinkamba

Green Party president Peter Sinkamba has yet again become the first presidential hopeful to concede defeat amidst growing tension in the Thursday elections.

Mr Sinkamba in 2015 was the first presidential candidate to concede defeat.

Appearing live on ZNBC TV’s election update program, as scores of millions of Zambians are glued to their television sets, awaiting the final results announced, Mr Sinkamba said he has demonstrated leadership by being the first leader, as always, to dilute the tension and concede defeat and called on other colleagues to do the same.

He said that he did so in order to make it easier for the main contenders to do the same, provided it doesn’t go their way.

“Myself, being the only contender, as proclaimed by many stakeholders, as having a clear manifesto and agenda. But Zambians have got their preferences and it is not for me to force them.

“Let our politicians come out in the open and talk to their cadres like I did. When I found the PF cadres prematurely celebrating, I told them to hold on to the jubilation until ECZ announces final winner because that had the capacity to provoke others.

“There is nothing peculiar about this election and the international community have declared these elections peaceful, free, and fair. Congratulations to my fellow candidates and the three main contenders Edith Nawakwi, Hakainde Hichilema, Edgar Lungu for putting up a good election campaign,” he said.

He also said the amended Constitution gives any aggrieved party to petition the results within 7 days hence any aggrieved candidate should use the right channels to air their grievances which is the constitutional court.

And People’s Alliance for Change (PAC) President, Andyford Banda has conceded defeat in the 2016 Presidential election.

Mr. Banda has told ZNBC news in Lusaka today that PAC will build on the gains made in this election to prepare for the 2021 general election.

He also says despite the ECZ not having fully announced the results, he is very sure, his party will not win.

Mr. Banda has also invited young people that want to contest the elections in 2021 on his party ticket to start preparations now.

He is however impressed with the performance of his party in the August 11 polls.

Meanwhile, the wait for the final results has contnued. ECZ had promised to provide an update at 06:00 this monrning, but it has now been well over 6 hours that has passed.

And Home Affairs Permanent Secretary, Dr. Chileshe Mulenga has said government would not allow or tolerate any breakdown in Law and Order.

He said citizens should report any acts of criminal misbehaviour or any acts of lawlessness to the Police or should call the free toll lines

Dr. Mulenga said that anyone intending to disrupt Zambia’s Peace was an enemy of Democracy and the full force of the law will be applied to them regardless of status.

He said that Zambians voted in peace and were anxiously waiting for the full results.

He also advised people to report to Police if they witnessed or met public disturbances.

“Kindly give exact location to enable us respond immediately to potential points of indiscipline and disorderly behaviour. Stay alert too to stop the enemies of Democracy”.

Fwayo heads to Israel for trials

Power Dynamos forward Fwayo Tembo has been invited for trials at Israeli club Hapoel Ra’anana.

Club secretary Ricky Mamfunda confirmed Ra’anana’s interest in Tembo.
The player missed Power’s 1-0 win at Red Arrows on Sunday.

“Fwayo is headed for trials in Israel at a club called Hapoel Ra’anana,” Mamfunda said.

“They want him on loan. Once he passes the trials we shall give you full details,” he concluded.

Tembo is enjoying good form at Arthur Davies.

He has scored seven goals since joining Power as a free agent earlier in May.

Tembo has played for National Assembly, Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel, Basel in Switzerland, and FC Astra of Romania.

The Referendum vote might have failed-YALI

The template of the Referendum ballot paper for the referendum voting
in the August 2016 elections.
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has said that the failure by the Electoral Commission of Zambia to release the result for the referendum alongside the presidential result, as was promised by the Commission, has raised serious speculation among members of the public that the Referendum could have failed.

Isaac Mwanza the YALI Governance Advisor said they are saddened that the Commission has left the matter of the referendum outcome to public speculation when that referendum vote was as more important as other elections.

“YALI has however said the total votes cast for presidential vote announced this far by the Commission is a pointer that Zambia will meet the required 50% threshold of eligible voters turning up to cast their vote which will allow Parliament to consider the Bill to alter the Bill of Rights and Article 79.

“We are saddened though that the Commission has left the matter of the referendum outcome to public speculation when that referendum vote was as more important as other elections,” he said.

He explained “YALI fears if the referendum result is only released after all other results have been done, the Commission may be accused of doctoring the numbers in favour of either candidate who would have won the elections because of each candidate had their own stance on the referendum.

“The Commission seem to have been overwhelmed with conducting the general election at the expense of the referendum and this is the reason why YALI had objected to turning the Electoral Commission into a Referendum Commission as ECZ has less capacity to handle the referendum.”
He also said the proposal by his organization on having a separate Referendum Commission which would be in charge of the Referendum process.

“The YALI proposal to conduct the referendum alongside the 2016 general elections was premised on the fact that we shall have a separate Referendum Commission which would solely have the capacity to announce the referendum result as ECZ also went around with their business of announcing winning candidate and we feel government must re – table the Referendum Bill to make clear distinction between the Electoral Commission and the Referendum Commission and the roles that each plays in the referendum,” he said.

Mutati calls for responsible behavior from parties participating in the presidential polls

Felix Mutati
Felix Mutati
MMD President Felix Mutati has called for responsible behavior from political parties participating in the presidential elections.

Mr Mutati whose party did not take part in the presidential poll but supported the ruling PF said that there is need to behave responsibly and desist from any actions that have the potential to undermine the ECZ and our democratic credentials as a nation.

He expressed concern that there was undue pressure which the ECZ was bearing and that the management of elections was a serious undertaking of which the ECZ is doing the best it can.

“Whether in government or opposition, we need to behave responsibly and desist from any actions that have the potential to undermine the ECZ and our democratic credentials as a nation.

“The Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) is concerned about the unnecessary pressure which the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has had to bear over the past few days.

“Management of elections is always a challenging undertaking and we believe that the ECZ has been striving to provide the best service under very difficult economic and logistical circumstances. The MMD believes that it is the duty of all political parties and stakeholders to support the noble efforts of all our institutions of governance including the ECZ, if our young democracy is to be sustained,” he said.

He said there is need for people to understand some of the reasons which has lead to the delay in announcing the results.

“Understandably, the process of announcing results of the presidential vote is extremely slow and the reasons are clear. The voter turnout in this years’ election was among the highest in recent years. Additionally, ECZ officials are managing five elections for the presidential, parliamentary, mayoral/council chairperson, councilor and the referendum.

“Also, the verification of results at the ECZ results center has incorporated political party representatives for the very first time thereby further delaying the process of announcing results.

We therefore urge fellow political players to provide sufficient space to officials of the ECZ to perform their duties without undue influence and pressure,” he said.

Sampa is great at Splendour in the Grass

Zambian born, Australia-based singer/song writer Sampa The Great has received rave reviews for her performance at the Splendour in the Grass, an Australian Festival held in the Byron Bay, New South Wales.
The festival, organised as a gathering to cater for Australia’s winter season, a period that had traditionally been associated with very few events of this nature, is considered as one of Australia’s largest winter music festivals.
The festival is reported to have succeeded in pulling off one memorable live music event out in Byron Bay.
“Providing a line-up of artistes representing some of the best touring musicians Australia has at the minute, not to mention some incredible international visitors, Splendour was more than just a playground for triple j legionnaire hat-wearing fans; it was a weekend where house music could exist alongside alt-country and bluegrass through the same afternoon, where an Icelandic post-rock trio could headline on a Sunday night and send the audience into the night to finish partying ,with one of the world’s biggest homegrown producers,” the AU Review, an independent online publication for new music, arts, food, reported.
The publication says while it was impossible to be at every stage for all artistes, there were some undeniable highlights at Splendour.
“Friday afternoon brought Sampa The Great to the Mix Up Tent for one of the most confidently delivered and sharply executed sets of the day. The Sydney-based vocalist and writer had the crowd involved and responding to each call out on cue, not to mention feeling some heavy grooves as she worked her way around those impressive rhymes we’ve been associating with Sampa over the past year,” it wrote.
“With a huge grin on her face and the sass to match, Sampa The Great’s position as one of the Australian hip hop scene’s most intriguing and exciting young artists moving forward has well and truly been solidified in 2016 – this festival set just went and proved it.”
It was not just the AU Review waxing lyrical about Sampa The Great’s performance at the festival, TheMusic.com, an integrated media network published by Street Press Australia Pty Ltd, equally did the same.
“As the nation begins to recover from another epic Splendour in the Grass, we thought it best to recap the standout bands and life-changing lessons the 2016 event delivered,” the publication writes.

sampa the great

Born in Zambia and raised in Botswana, Sampa Tembo found a love for hip-hop at an early age, carrying it with her as she travelled and studied. Her upbringing and life experience inform her lyrics, which cover political and societal imbalances in a meaningful way, tackling heavy themes with a light touch. It’s a quality that runs through her recent debut release The Great Mixtape, produced by fellow Sydney-sider Godriguez. Rather than using his work merely as a soapbox, Sampa delicately entwines her poetry through each beat, playfully switching styles to ensure it engages you on every level.
Like her many influences – both musical and political – Sampa hopes to inform and inspire, delivering her message in a way that is bold yet inclusive. “I’m great,” she proclaims, not as a boast but instead a rallying call. “You’re great. We’re great.

In the vain of un-announced releases Sampa dropped 2 Soundcloud uploads ‘Blue Boss’ (Hitting #1 on Hype Machine and picked up by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1, Reaching 1 Million Spotify plays in 2 months) & ‘Black Dignity’ added to Triple J Rotation. Her collaboration with Urthboy & Okenyo spawned the single ‘Second Heartbeat’ in early 2016. In March her collaboration with REMI ‘For Good’ hit the Triple J airwaves.
Sampa has won over a wave of adoring fans having been chosen to support Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Hiatus Kaiyote, Ibeyi, Little Simz and Fat Freddy’s Drop along with her sold out headline shows and festival slots at Golden Plains, Sugar Mountain, WOMAD & VIVID Live.

Zesco’s Champions League passage confirmed

ZESCO United Football Club
ZESCO United Football Club
Zesco United semifinal passage to the 2016 CAF Champions League has been confirmed.

This is after Wydad Casablanca beat bottom placed ASEC Mimosa from Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 on Sunday at home in Morocco

With a game to spare, Wydad win Group A on 10 points while Zesco will finish second ahead of Al Ahly of Egypt, who have 5 points, due to a better head-to-head over the latter.

Zesco, on 8 points, drew 2-2 away on Friday with Al Ahly whom they beat 3-2 in tie first leg in Ndola on June 18.

This is the first time a Zambian club has qualified to the CAF Champions League semifinals to see Zesco set another milestone in the competition.

Zesco was also the first Zambian club to qualify to the group stage in continental club football after qualifying for the 2009 edition of the same event.

Mupopo fails to qualify for 400 meters finals

Team Zambia’s run at the 2016 Rio Olympics waned further when Kabange Mupopo failed to qualify for the womens 400 meters final and out of the Brazil tournament.

Mupopo finished 7th in Sunday’s semifinals with a time of 52.04.

She finished three second behind the qualifying threshold set by Shaunae Muller of Bahamas who finished second Allyson Felix of the USA who both qualified to the finals.

Team Zambia now have one athlete still in the Olympics with Jordan Chipangama taking to the track on the final day of the Olympics on August 21 in the Marathon.

All peace loving Zambians must disregard HH’s hate and bitter speech-Given Lubinda

Given Lubinda at the Results Centre
Given Lubinda at the Results Centre

Lusaka-Kabwata Law-maker Given Lubinda has cautioned UPND leader to take extreme caution in the tone he chooses to in calling the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) ‘biased’ and accusing them of ‘colluding’ with President Edgar Chagwa Lungu to allegedly rig the August 11.

The Former Agriculture Minister was reacting to an intense live broadcast of Hichilema’s frustration at the work of the ECZ on Joy FM radio last night which he described as ‘uncalled for, highly inflammatory and has the ability of throwing the country into chaos.’

Below are some of the quotes an ostensibly infuriated Hichilema uttered on his live radio address he gave to local, foreign media and election monitors in Lusaka on 14th August in reaction to what he is calling a ‘rigged election process. These are Hichilema’s words:

“What has happened (the election that has placed Edgar Lungu in the lead) is a military coup on a democratic process. That’s the only way I can describe it

“I invite you to be active (Hichilema did not elaborate on the form of ‘active’ he wants his supporters to take but the message is not lost

“This docility (Zambians are docile according to Hichilema) will damage your families

“Will the election result be free and fair, my answer is NO. The electoral commission is receiving instructions from a participant in the election (Edgar Lungu)

There ae fake ballots inside the ballot boxes (transparent ballot boxes) and figures are changing along the way from polling stations to tallying centre

We could go on but everyone interested in this highly inflammatory statements, especially the police can get it from the radio station in question.

Our main concern is that Mr Hichilema has decided to take his frustrations to a criminal level that has the potential of throwing the country into turmoil.

He has accused President Lungu of colluding with ECZ to steal a victory and cheat intelligent Zambians and at the same time he is calling on the same Zambians to be “active” in quelling a coup.

How does Mr Hichilema even expect a victory of fairness from an ECZ, one of the most respected electoral commissions on the entire continent by calling them inept and compromised? Who advises Mr Hichilema?

We call upon the relevant authorities to protect the integrity of our ECZ and that of the Office of the President and talk to Mr Hichilema to elaborate what he meant by these above “military coup statements.”

Zambia loves its peace, it cherishes it and detests anyone that calls for confusion of any sort.

Need we remind Mr Hichilema that President Lungu responded to each and every prayer call by the church while he on record called it a waste of time, President Lungu signed a Peace Accord with ECZ which he did not?

It is out of order for Mr Hichilema to continue to wantonly insult the ECZ and call on Zambians to be “active” while at the same time risking our cherished peace.

We also ask the international observers, media and local to be cautious in the manner they report on this dangerous man’s frustrations. Hichilema must wait for final official results instead of being the usual political cry baby he is quickly turning into. All peace loving Zambians must disregard his hate and bitter speech.

President Lungu was in church praying for love and unity when Hichilema in his usual arrogance was bossing the ECZ officials and calling for their dismissal in the same manner he called the entire police service MORONS. We are also aware that Hichilema is banking on a government of national unity. It won’t happen.

UPND supporters in near punch up with ECZ officials in Livingstone

THERE was growing tension and near punch-up last night at the Livingstone totalling centre between United Party for National Development (UPND) supporters and electoral officers following the delayed declaration of winning Member of Parliament, Mayor and councillors for Livingstone Constituency.

According ro resuts, UPND won the presidential as well as parliamentary, mayoral and 16 out of 17 wards in the Constituency but only three councillors have so far been declared winners four days the electorates voted.

UPND supporters lost patience and closed the totalling centre with journalists as well as monitors and police officers locked inside the centre as they demanded for announcing and declaration of winners.

It was at this that UPND supporters roughed up and nearly punched some electoral officers while turning chairs upside down and almost destroyed the computer which was transmitting results.

One UPND cadre almost attacked Livingstone District Electoral officer Vivian Chikoti but alert police officers stopped the act as all stakeholders inside the totalling centre were prevented from leaving the premises.

The cadres, who issued a lot of insults to electoral officers, wondered why Livingstone, which only has a single Constituency, was taking four days to conclude the process of announcing and declaring winners.

In response, ECZ assistant returning officer Wezi Manda said the electronic system of verifying results was lengthy and this was why officials were delaying to to announce and declare winners.

After intensified pressure from cadres, ECZ oficials yielded to demands from cadres and started verifying results manually and assured stakeholders that they would speedy up the entire process.

Earlier in the day, UPND supporters raised concern over missing figures on their candidates and the matter was later rectified.

HH accuse ECZ of colluding with PF to rig elections as PF leads, with 24 Constituencies left

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema addressing media from his residence
UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema addressing media from his residence
UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has accused the country’s election mangers the Electoral Commission of Zambia of deliberately not providing the G12 in Lusaka so as to live room for manipulation of results.

Mr Hichilema who spoke at a media briefing held at his house around 22:40hrs Sunday, said the G12 sheet is the only proscribed document which is the legal requirement used for recording ” the will of the people.”

He said nothing can replace the G12 document which is supposed to be used to authenticate the results and that the document was deliberately left out in Lusaka so that the ECZ in collusion with the ruling PF can wait for results from other provinces and use the Lusaka vote to compensate for any deficits.

He wondered how G12 can not be available in Lusaka where the ECZ is located adding that some polling stations are a stone’s throw from ECZ offices.

He explained that the omission was a deliberate move made to secure votes for the PF saying events in some polling stations point to that fact.

He further claimed that PF cadres took over polling stations shortly after the close of polling further adding that some cadres were voting more than twice while others went to vote with premarked ballots in their pockets.

He also accused the ECZ of trying to promote instability in the country by colluding with the PF to take away the decision of Zambians.

Mr Hichilema has since vowed not accept the results describing the process and results as a coup on democracy by those who control the army.

He said he will fight for Zambians and called on well meaning Zambians to fight with him.

And President Edgar Lungu of the Patriotic Front has maintained the lead in Presidential Election Results from 132 constituencies out of the 156 constituencies country wide.

Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- Chairperson Justice Esau Chulu has so far announced that Mr. Lungu has 1,454,165.

His closest rival Hakainde Hichilema of United Party for National Development now has 1,383,594

The margin stands at 70,571 votes

ECZ is yet to announce results from 24 constituencies and the next update is scheduled at 06:30 hours this morning.

Discovery of a lid for a parliamentary ballot box in the bush sparks calls for a petition

Mpongwe crowds

CONFUSION has erupted in Mpongwe following the discovery of a lid for a parliamentary ballot box in a nearby bush a few meters away from the district totaling centre.

The lid for the ballot box with serial number ECZ-16 0430212 was allegedly found in a nearby bush along the Mpongwe Luanshya Road on Saturday night.

The lid was discovered by the locals who reported the case to Mpongwe District Police station.

Meanwhile, the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership in Mpongwe has expressed concern over the mysterious lid which has sparked protests among PF members in the district.

The patriotic front members want ECZ to establish how the lid for the ballot box was found in the bush.

District Electral officer Francis Nkhoma said he could not comment on the issue as it was under police investigation.

PF candidate Emmanuel Kasambo has said he would petition the parliamentary results for this year’s election.

Mr Kasambo said the discovery of the lid was a sign of Electral malpractice in the Mpongwe constituency polls.

“It is a must that I will petition and I will sight ECZ because the elections were conducted in a manner that is not fair and for me they need to explain where the lid came from and they are assuming it came from outside Mpongwe which does not make sense.” He said.

“My agents were not given official results of what was happening in the polling stations so I need explanations.” He added.

UPND candidate Rasfold Bulaya who is former Mpongwe District commissioner polled 9793 votes seconded by Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Emmanuel Kasambo who polled 8271.

UPND Demands a Recount in Lusaka due to Irregularities

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

UPND Demands a Recount in Lusaka due to Irregularities

We have formally requested a recount in Lusaka urban constituencies due to the high number of irregularities identified in the counting and transmission process. These abnormalities include the failure to provide polling agents with their copies of the Gen 12 form, leading to delays during which time our agents were subject to intimidation and in some cases illegal advance. We are now seeking this action through the courts.

There have also been a number of specific incidents in the District that have sparked allegation of manipulation, of which we have presented evidence to the Commission:

1. Our Lusaka mayoral candidate Dr. Maureen Mwanawasa uncovered a substantial discrepancy between the polling station totals and the constituency level result for Kanyama constituency of over 14,000 in favour of the PF.

2. Incidents in which PF supporters have been reported to arrive during the counting process and our agents were subject to intimidation, including at Kamwala basic school and Olympia school in Lusaka.

3. The identification of a higher number of votes tallied than registered voters.

4. The discovery of pre-marked ballot papers uncovered from a civilian van outside of ZAF HQ.

The evidence clearly shows that without this recount the election would be severely compromised and could result in a stolen election. We know the PF is seeking to ensure a re-run situation at this point, but the will of the Zambian people must prevail.

Nawakwi questions zero votes even from her village

91

Edith Nawakwi
Edith Nawakwi

FDD leader Edith Nawakwi has wondered whether it was true that even her own relatives did not vote for her.

Ms Nawakwi who said during a media briefing Sunday that it was surprising that she was getting zero votes even in places were she has relatives.

Ms Nawakwi who was the only woman on the ballot wondered how possible it was for her party to get zeroes in some constituencies where they had structures.

She said that in Kaputa her count at the constituency had been put at 276 but the tallying national result reflected at 196.

“Are you telling me that even in Mwenzo where I was born where my father lives I can get zero votes? In Mungwi where during a recent by-election we had a decent haulage of results can we get zero? Even in Munali here where we have structures do you think we can get zero? Where have all these people evaporated to?

“Even all our structures people who run our offices could not have voted for us. So I think there is someone moving my results taking them to another candidate. Where are my results going? I have told you about Kaputa, Msanzala and even in Munali so I do not think the results are a true reflection of what is going on,” he said.

She also said that once the elections have passed the country should seriously embrace the electronic transmission of results.

Ms Nawakwi said if results were being transmitted electronically the process may have long been closed.
