Interview with Sebastian Evans: Composer of Nickelodeon’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” animated series

SebastianEvans_Headshot

Sebastian Evans’ diverse talents have steadily established him as a true force in the competitive world of film and TV music. Invigorating several hit animated television shows with his unique style, his composing accomplishments and critical acclaim continue to grow. Most recently, Sebastian’s distinct sound has helped reinvent the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise starring Seth Green and Sean Astin. From his involuntary head-bob inducing main title theme, to his seamless blend of Japanese instrumentation and modern western styles, Sebastian has provided a lively score that has helped to reinvent Nickelodeon’s Emmy-winning series for a whole new generation.

Sebastian has also created scores for other hugely popular shows including Cartoon Network’s Ben 10: Omniverse, starring Yuri Lowenthal and Joe DiMaggio, Transformers: Animated, starring David Kaye and Tara Strong as well as Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go, starring Greg Cipes and Mark Hamill for Disney. He has also worked on various projects for Warner Brothers, Adult Swim and Fox.

Citing influences ranging from Raymond Scott and Edvard Grieg to Thomas Newman and Tool, Sebastian draws on a diverse musical pool for inspiration. In particular, his versatile style is enhanced by his idiomatic use of rhythms and progressions, which he derives from his love of hip-hop music.

A California native, Sebastian aspires to score for many genres across film and television. His favorite Ninja Turtle is Donatello.

KAPA187: When did you start making music, and what inspired you to focus on composing music for film and TV.

Sebastian Evans:  Well, I’ve always had an affinity for film and tv music since before I can remember. My parents can attest to that. They remember me humming commercial jingles and tv show theme songs constantly. I’d also hum background music passages of shows while we were watching the show. They thought I had some type of humming Tourette syndrome or something. But it wasn’t until my dad took me to see “Return of the Jedi” when I was 7 that I understood that this was a career that you could do for a living. Eventually, my parents got me a piano and lessons when I was around 10. I’d set up my boombox next to the piano, push record and spend hours making my own scores to my favorite movies. As I grew up I was heavily involved in music programs provided by my school and community. Like all of them. Jazz Band, Marching Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, Drumline, Choir, Music Theatre. If music was involved, I was a part of it. It was in these forums that I first began writing original music for others to play.

KAPA187: How did you get the opportunity to work on the animated series “Teenage mutant ninja turtles”?

Sebastian Evans:  Ciro (The producer of the show) called me up and asked me if I wanted to do the music for the pilot. The pilot led to me doing the music for the entire show including the main theme. I was a HUGE TMNT fan as a kid and to grow up, work on the reboot and contribute to the franchise is a humbling honor.

KAPA187:  You have worked on a different animated series such as ‘Ben 10: Omniverse’,’Transformers animated’ etc. Do you use the same approach when composing for all of them?

Sebastian Evans:  Yes and no. I say yes because every project starts with what is needed or what needs to be enhanced. This is talked about in great length and determined over time by the director, producer and myself. I also try to come up with a style or over arching sound that is custom made and unique to the project. Those aspects are the same for every project. The approach becomes different when we delve deeper into the show. Some shows call for a need to work linear from beginning to end. Others (like tmnt) require me to come up with a feel or motif before I begin laying down tracks. Sometimes I find myself jumping around an episode for big moments and then linking it all together later.

KAPA187:  Being one of the few black composers in the industry do you feel added pressure to succeed?

Sebastian Evans:   I don’t feel any added pressure. But that might also be because most people don’t know I’m a black composer. Most composers enjoy a kind of incognito presence in the industry which I like. I’ve been very fortunate so far to have a career where no one seems to give it a second thought. They just want good music. My hope is that my work will continue to speak for itself just like everybody else in this field.

KAPA187: What challenges have you faced as a composer and how have you overcome them?

Sebastian Evans:   The biggest challenge for me has always been the notorious DEADLINE! In animation, the turn around time for an episode is very fast compared to movies or non animated TV shows so I’m always in a race against time to get the episode done and sounding as dope as possible. I’m one of those people that needs a deadline or I could spend days perfecting 5 seconds of a single cue. I do believe the awesome factor goes up the more time I have though.

KAPA187:  Having worked on numerous animated series do you have desires of working on feature films?

Sebastian Evans:   Of course! I’ve always wanted to go to the theatre and watch a movie with my score in the background. That’s probably most composers’ dream. I also would love to work on a non animated TV show one day.

KAPA187:  Apart from music, what else are you involved in?

Sebastian Evans:  Nothing. I’m kind of boring in that way. Oh! But I love Legos.

KAPA187:  Are there many opportunities for young people who may not be based in the US to get into the industry?

Sebastian Evans:  Well, the industry is vast. But I’d say anybody who wants to get into the industry needs to physically go where the industry resides.

KAPA187: What advice do you have for young people who would like to compose music for TV and film?

Sebastian Evans:   Learn the basics of music theory and instrumentation. A solid foundation in these areas are priceless in this field.

KAPA187: Any last words…

Sebastian Evans:  Cats rule.

Christian Churches Monitoring Group issues a Pre-Election Day Statement

Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG)

For Free and Fair Elections

Pre-Election Day Statement on the 2016 General Election

9 th August 2016

Introduction

The Christian Churches Monitoring Group (CCMG) is an alliance of four faith based organisations formed to help promote credible elections through non-partisan citizen monitoring. The CCMG partner organisations are: Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ); Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ); Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflections (JCTR);and Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), formerly the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC), through Caritas Zambia. CCMG was founded in ahead of the 20 th January 2015 presidential by-election.

For the 2016 general elections, CCMG has been comprehensively monitoring all electoral processes and the electoral environment since September 2015. Specifically, this has included monitoring of voter registration; inspection of the provisional voters’ register, and the nomination of candidates, as well as deploying long-term observers to all 103 districts in all ten provinces.

Electoral Context

Overall preparations for the 2016 general elections by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) appear to be on track.

As noted in our previous reports, voter registration, voter verification, and nominations were all conducted generally in accordance with procedures and internationally acceptable standards, with opportunities for voters as well as parties and candidates to participate in these processes.

This builds on the elections the ECZ organised in just 90 days for the 2015 presidential by-election following the untimely passing of President Michael Sata. CCMG also monitored these elections and found them to be credible.

However, stakeholders have since raised various concerns during the pre-election period related to: electoral violence; inability of candidates to freely and fairly campaign; lack of impartiality by the police; unbalanced coverage by state media, gagging of the independent media as seen in the ”closure” The Post newspaper; the procurement of ballot papers; and registration of ineligible voters.

Further, we regret to note that with only two days remaining before the polling day, there are continued reports of political violence and intimidation. CCMG condemns any acts of political violence and intimidation in the strongest terms and calls on all political party supporters to adhere to the ECZ’s Code of Conduct.

Finally, CCMG notes the recent Constitutional Court decision in regards to government ministers vacating their posts following dissolution of parliament. This ruling demonstrates how disputes can be peacefully be resolved in our country. The issue was resolved without violence according to legal procedures. CCMG only notes the amount of time take for the Constitutional Court to rule. In general election related disputes must be resolved quickly.

CCMG recommends all parties respect the decision of the Constitutional Court and acts upon the resolution.

Notwithstanding these challenges, CCMG believes that these issues do not call into question the credibility of the overall process.

Election Day Observation

CCMG will deploy 1,674 trained and accredited monitors and conduct a Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) for the 2016 election. For the PVT, CCMG will have PVT Monitors at 1,404 polling streams located at 1,001 polling stations in every province, district, and constituency of the country as well as District Supervisors deployed as mobile monitors to all 103 districts of the country. CCMG has made every effort to promote the participation of women and youth in its monitoring efforts; 37% of our monitors are women and 69% are youths 18 to 35 years old.

All of CCMG’s PVT Monitors and District Supervisors have been carefully selected from member organizations, thoroughly trained by CCMG, and accredited by the ECZ. All have been given a copy of the ECZ’s Code of Conduct and all have read aloud and signed CCMG’s Non-Partisan Monitor Pledge to ensure honest and accurate reports.

CCMG’s PVT Monitors will arrive at their assigned polling stations and polling streams at 05h30 and remain throughout voting and counting until the official results for the entire polling station have been announced and posted. Throughout the day, they will send six monitoring reports from a detailed checklist via coded text message using their own mobile phones. This will provide CCMG with near real time information on the conduct of the election.

CCMG’s PVT

PVT is quite a sophisticated citizen observation methodology. It employs statistics and information and communication technologies (ICTs) to help ensure that the official presidential results as announced by the ECZ reflect the ballots cast by voters at polling stations. PVT is not new to Zambia. PVTs have been conducted in Zambia for presidential elections in 1991, 2008, 2011, and 2015.

Citizen observers have used PVTs to promote credible elections across Africa, including in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Nigeria. PVT provides the most accurate and timely information on the conduct of voting and counting because reports are collected from a scientific sample of polling stations and polling streams and reports are transmitted in near real 2 of 5time via coded SMSs using mobile phones. Because CCMG PVT Monitor reports come from a scientific sample of polling stations and polling streams, the findings are true for ALL polling stations and polling streams (even those without a CCMG PVT Monitor).

CCMG’s sampled PVT polling stations and polling streams are located in every province, every district and every constituency of the country. To ensure CCMG’s PVT sample is truly representative, the percentage of sampled polling stations and streams in each province, district, and constituency closely matches the percentage of all polling stations in each province, district, and constituency. For example, Copperbelt province has 13.6% of all polling stations and 14.8% of all polling streams in the country while 13.5% of PVT sampled polling stations and 14.4% of sampled polling streams are in Copperbelt province. Thus the composition of the PVT sampled polling stations and polling streams closely matches the distribution of all polling stations and polling streams in the country

We also wish to underline the fact that PVT is the only methodology that can independently verify the accuracy of the official presidential results as announced by the ECZ. CCMG will only be verifying the accuracy of the result of the presidential election. Verification is done by adding together the official results for the presidential election as announced at sampled polling stations and polling streams transmitted directly to CCMG’s PVT Data Centre by coded text message. PVT Monitors do not count ballot papers themselves, but only monitor the process.

The PVT is NOT an exit poll and PVT Monitors do not ask anyone for whom they voted.

While CCMG will independently verify the accuracy of the presidential results as announced by the ECZ, CCMG does not announce official results or declare the winner of an election. Only the ECZ is constitutionally mandated to announce official results for any election. PVTs serve as a deterrent to prevent results from being manipulated. PVTs also reduce the potential for post-election violence due to possible disagreements over the official results.

Conclusion

CCMG will hold a press conference at 10h00 on the 12 th of August at the Intercontinental Hotel to share our preliminary findings on the conduct of voting and counting. Immediately after the ECZ announces the official results for the presidential election, CCMG will release its verification statement on the accuracy of the official presidential results after the ECZ’s official pronouncement.

CCMG calls on all Zambians to go to the polling stations and vote on Election Day.

Zambians who are registered to vote should go to their assigned polling stations and remember to bring their National Registration Card (NRC) and Voter ID card. However, Zambians who are 18 years old or older and have an NRC, but are not registered to vote should also go to polling stations with their NRCs as they will be able to vote in the Constitutional Referendum (even though they will not be able to vote in the other election)

CCMG calls on all candidates, parties, their supporters, and voters, to be patient and to be peaceful on Election Day and in the post-election period. This year voters will cast five ballot papers rather than three and the maximum number of voters per polling stream has been increased from 850 to 950. This may result in the process taking more time and voters having 3 of 5to wait longer in the queues. It may also increase the time it takes to count the ballot papers and to consolidate the results. As such, we must exercise a lot of patience and avoid spreading unfounded rumours over election results.

CCMG encourages all candidates to accept the official results as announced by the ECZ.

If any candidate or party has any issues with the results they should peacefully pursue the legal avenues provided for seeking redress. CCMG’s PVT will provide accurate, independent verification of the official results for the presidential election . If CCMG’s PVT findings are consistent with the official results for the presidential election then candidates, their supporters and the general public should have confidence that they truly reflect the votes cast.

CCMG calls on the two run-off candidates to call for peace if the presidential election goes to a second round. The run-off system for the presidential election is new and not all Zambians understand that it may not be possible for no one to be declared the winner of the presidential election in the first round. It is therefore critical that the ECZ, but also political parties and civil society, take all steps to explain to the public that if no presidential candidate wins by 50% +1 of the votes cast, there will be a second round.

Finally, CCMG reminds voters that ours is not a new democracy. We gained our independence over 50 years ago and multiparty elections were reintroduced in 1991. We should all conduct ourselves with political maturity, reject political violence, and permit all voters to go to the polls and vote according to their conscience regardless of their political affiliation or preference.

All of us; the ECZ, the government, political parties and voters should be guided by the Christian principle of, “Do unto others as we would have others do unto us.” if all stakeholders follow this precept then the 2016 general elections will be credible and Zambia will serve as a model to the region and the whole of Africa.

God Bless Zambia

President Lungu to comply with the directives of the Constitutional Court Judgement on Ministers

President Lungu

President Edgar Lungu has accepted the judgment of the Constitutional Court that ministers vacate office following the dissolution of Parliament.

According to a statement to the media by his pres aide Amos Chanda, President Lungu says the Government respects the Ruling of the Constitutional Court and has taken note of its interpretation of the provisions of the republican Constitution.

The Head of State says the Government will therefore comply with the directives of the court because no appeal is provided for against the Constitutional Court decisions.

The President has stated that interpretation of the law remains a preserve of the Judiciary and therefore the Government will make no further comment on the matter.

The Head of State has, however, noted that the Constitutional Court in its wisdom relied only on the Article, which deals with vacating the office by a Member of Parliament on dissolution.

The Provision of the Constitutional (Amendment) Act No.2 of 2016 which are in contention as to whether the ministers and deputy ministers stay in power after the dissolution of Parliament are as follows:

(a) Article 72(1), a Member of Parliament shall, except the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, vacate the seat in the National Assembly upon a dissolution of Parliament;

(b) Article 116 (3) (e), The office of Minister becomes vacant if another person assumes the Office of President;

(c) Furthermore, the Constitution of Zambia Act No.1 of 2016 provides under Article 7(2) that holding the post of Vice-President, Minister or Deputy Minister shall continue to hold that position under the Constitution until that appointment is terminated by the President in accordance with the Constitution.

The President has also stated that the Government relied on the two latter provisions of the Constitution for Ministers and Deputy Ministers to stay in Office until terminated or the new President is sworn into Office.

“Nevertheless, the Government respects the Judgment of the Constitutional Court and has taken note of its interpretation of the provisions of the Constitution and will therefore comply with the directives contained in the Judgment as they also note that there is no appeal from the Constitutional Court. Interpretation of the law remains a preserve of the Judiciary and therefore the Government can make no further comment on the matter.”

Zesco United defend inactivity

Zesco United insist that their two-week period of inactivity will not affect their performance in Friday’s clash against Al Ahly.

Zesco and Al Ahly clash in Suez on July 12 in a 2016 CAF Champions League penultimate Group A match, that should they win, will see them make their semifinal debut in the competition.

Their last competitive game was on July 27 in another Group A away match against Cote d’Ivorie giants ASEC Mimosa that ended 1-1 in Abidjan.

“No, that (the inactivity) is an advantage for us because we have enough energy to play that game in Egypt,” Zesco goalkeeper and captain Jacob Banda said prior to departure for Cairo on Tuesday.

Zesco are second in Group A on 7 points, tied with leaders Wydad Casablanca who host ASEC in Rabat on Sunday.

Al Ahly and ASEC are 3rd and bottom of Group A respectively but level on 4 points.

HH Holds a Press Briefing in Kitwe

This afternoon Mr. Hichilema addressed a press briefing at Moba Hotel in Kitwe. He covered a number of issues from violence to the recent ruling by the Constitutional Court that PF ministers have continued in office illegally and must now pay back all the money they owe to the Zambian people.

Following attempts by the PF to cancel the UPND’s final rallies and further attacks on supporters, including the UPND youth team travelling by bus in Mtendere yesterday, Mr. Hichilema put the question to Lungu ‘What are you afraid off to be behaving like this?’. He called for institutions, such as ZICTA and the Zambia Police, to resist being abused and misused by Lungu so as to deny citizens their rights.

Mr. Hichilema called for calm saying: “I want to say thank you to all UPND members who have behaved calmly in the face of provocation during the campaign period and I want to ask you to continue on like this.”

He explained the significance of the Constitutional Court ruling of Monday 8th August as evidence that Lungu has benefitted from state resources during the campaign. He said, however, while the campaign period had not been free and fair President Lungu should make sure he doesn’t interfere with the election itself, or he will find himself being ruled against in the courts.

Not only has the Constitutional Court now ruled against Lungu, but in the last 24 hours the High Court has ruled in the UPND’s favour on PF attempts to have the rally in Kitwe’s Freedom Park cancelled, as well as the ongoing matter with ZNBC on the airing of the UPND’s documentary entitled ‘Hakainde Hichilema – The Man, The Vision, The Plan’. Mr. Hichilema explained that this in combination with the UPND’s plan to protect the vote and commitment by our supporters to turnout in great numbers on Thursday will take the party to a conclusive first round victory.

President Lungu Fires Nchito on Recommendation from Tribunal, Appoints new DPP

Former DPP Mutembo Nchito
President Edgar Lungu has removed suspended Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mr. Mutembo Nchito from office following the Tribunal’s recommendation that he vacates office for misconduct.

According to a statement released to the media by his Press Aide Amos Chanda, President Lungu has since appointed acting DPP Mrs. Lilian Siyuni into the job subject to ratification by Parliament. The President has made the appointment in exercise of powers vested in him by Article 180 of the Constitution of Zambia.

In a letter dated 9th August, 2016 to Mrs. Siyuni, the President wished her God’s speed in the discharge of her duties.

“I hereby appoint you as Director of Public Prosecutions. Your appointment is subject to ratification by Parliament.”

The President’s decision follows the Report by the Tribunal which was appointed on 10th March, 2015 pursuant to Article 58(2) and (3) of the Republican Constitution. The Tribunal was appointed to investigate allegations of misconduct by Mr. Nchito.

The Tribunal led by former Chief Justice Mr. Justice Annel Silungwe on Sunday, 7th August, 2016 submitted the Report to His Excellency the President, after completing its inquiry into the matter.

The Tribunal recommended that the two proven Terms of Reference No. 2 and No. 4 sufficiently constituted misconduct in reference to Article 58(2) and (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia.

The Tribunal concluded that the Term of Reference No. 2, alleging misconduct or misbehavior by the DPP whereby on 20th February, 2015, the DPP purportedly took over prosecution of a matter before Senior Resident Magistrate, Lameck Mwale where the DPP was personally an accused person and proceeded to enter a nolle prosequi in his own case thereby defeating the ends justice, has been proved.

The Tribunal also concluded that the Term of Reference No.4 that the DPP’s act of intentional disrespect to judicial proceedings has been proved.

8 UPND CADRES WERE ASSAULTED BY PF CADRES IN MTENDERE COMPOUND, SAYS POLICE IG

EIGHT members of the United Party for National Development (UPND) have been assaulted in clashes between their party and the Patriotic Front (PF) cadres.

Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja has confirmed in a statement today that the eight were injured during a political violence between the two political parties at Zambeef in Mtendere compound yesterday.

Kanganja says the incident happened when the PF cadres were waiting for their parliamentary candidate Nkandu Luo while the UPND cadres were passing through dropping their political fliers.

The IG has named the eight injured UPND supporters as Austin Simweene aged 21 of Bauleni compound, Peter Mukupa of Mtendere East, Kebby Muchala Lungwe aged 29 also of Mtendere East, Thomas Phiri of Bauleni compound, and David Mweemba Malama of Bauleni compound.

Others are Tyson Zulu of Kalikiliki, Mildred Kailu aged 46 of Kalingalinga, and Obert Hankamba aged 37 of Mtendere compound.

“During the same confusion, two Samsung phones valued at K7 000, K18 000 cash and a laptop valued at K5 000 all property of Kosamu Tembo are reported to have been stolen,” Kanganja says.

“A public address system valued at K15 000 belonging to Panot Ngandu of Mtendere compound was also stolen.”

He says medical report forms were issued to those who were injured and that dockets will be opened as soon as complainants take back the said documents.

“We have instituted investigations in the matter and whoever will be found wanting will be dealt with accordingly irrespective of their political affiliation,” says Kanganja.

President Lungu tells EU observer mission he does not run ZNBC

67

President Lungu
President Lungu
President Edgar Lungu has said he is not in charge of the Zambia National Broadcasting Services (ZNBC) despite being the Head of State.

President Lungu reiterated that his role is to provide free, fair and credible elections so that people elect for themselves the leader they want.

The Head of State said this in Lusaka today when the European Union Observer Mission paid a courtesy call on him.

President Lungu said he does not control or direct the coverage of stories by ZNBC and neither does he control the content, of the public broadcaster as the institution is independent of its operations.

President Lungu said many times he has been accused that he influences the content of the National Broadcaster when in fact not.

He said ZNBC is run by the Independent Board of Directors, and execute their duties diligently without interference from government.

President Lungu said he has not stopped the opposition rallies and he has not restricted them access to the media in the country.

He said ZNBC also has its own editorial content and ethical standards which cannot be challenged by the government.

President Lungu said all the Rallies that are aired on ZNBC are fully paid for by the PF and are not aired for free as perceived by the general public and some opposition political parties.

The Head of State said the EU Observer Missions always gives one sided stories, which are not balanced and aimed at tarnishing the image of the country.

Meanwhile President Lungu has maintained that police have the discretion not to allow political parties to hold rallies, if the Head of State is in a certain area.

President Lungu said the police have always maintained that having two or more political parties in an area compromises security, which results in some rallies being postponed.

He said the opposition is complaining about postponement of their rallies because they fear that they are losing the elections.

The Head of State said he has a duty to maintain order because, peace, order and democracy need to co-exist in an election period.

President Edgar Lungu says conceding defeat in elections in most African countries is still a huge challenge.

President Lungu noted that most opposition political parties in Africa and Zambia in particular refuse to accept election results

The Head of State said for instance that the opposition UPND has already declared itself winners ahead of the August 11 polls and will not accept anything to the contrary.

President Lungu said this in Lusaka today when a group of four Election observer teams paid a courtesy call on him at State House.

The missions comprised of former president of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan under the African Union Elections Observation Mission (AUEOM) , Cassam Uteen, former President of Mauritius, under the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) Observer Mission, Ibrahim Gambani ,Special Envoy of the President of Nigeria and Cecile Kyenge ,chief observer for the European Union Observer Mission.

President Lungu advised all political parties in the country to know that there is life beyond being in State House.

The Head of State wondered why some political parties have gone further to state that they will not accept the Presidential results if they are not in their favour.

Ignoring the Prize: Can HH or Lungu win the Elections with 50+1 ?

The issue of 50+1remains veiled as Zambia votes. It is telling that the Electoral Commission of Zambia and politicians have not educated the public on this matter. Regardless of votes won, the requirement of 50+1 is the winning mark. What happens if no candidate gets 50+1 votes? How about the time involved before declaring the winner? These are critical questions to the 2016 presidential elections.

Unless numbers lie, Lungu and HH are unlikely to win the August 9 elections. In the January 20, 2015, Edgar Lungu got 48.33 (807,925), while HH got 46.67 (780,168). In the 2011 elections, the PF got 42 %, MMD 35 %, while UPND got 18 %. The 2008 election followed this pattern: MMD won by 40%, PF by 38 %, while UPND dropped to 19.7 %. In 2006, MMD won that election with 43 %, followed by PF at 29 % and lastly by UPND with 25 % of the vote.

The above numbers show why both HH and Lungu are not likely to win this election. Theoretically, one can argue that the absence of the MMD in 2016 elections suggest that a candidate can win 50+1. But as the 2015 elections showed, both parties are beneficiaries of MMD votes. Hence, love them or hate them, smaller parties will be the spoilers—they will make it very hard to hit 50+1.

Can Lungu hit the home-run without a re-run? To his credit, President Lungu started campaigning the moment he took power. Aside from widening PF-reach in rural areas through the implementation of the “Social Cash Transfer,” he killed the MMD—winning over Eastern province; thus restricting HH’s reach in Eastern Province. In this regard, PF and not HH will win a big chunk of former MMD votes in Eastern province. Nonetheless, President Lungu is unlikely to hit 50+1. At the hype of his popularity, President Sata could not hit 50%. President Lungu is not Sata – thus expecting 50+1 is ignoring the above figures.

But can HH make history this time around? Some people think the August 9 elections are settled. To use former first lady, Mrs. Maureen Mwanawasa’s words, “HH’s time to rule Zambia has come”. The numbers of former PF MPs campaigning for him such as Guy Scott, Silvia Masebo and Miles Sampa among many others and his support from Nevers Mumba’s MMD (though Mumba brings no vote to HH) add to this excitement. HH’s popularity in Southern province is intact, while the Copperbelt and Lusaka provinces have always been accommodating to UPND. Without polling, HH’s popularity in these areas will only be known after all votes are counted. Nevertheless, the question is not whether there is the HH tsunami in Zambia, but whether this tsunami will translate into 50+1 votes. Given the tribal nature of Zambian politics, and the number of opposition parties, HH’s chances of forming the next government without a re-run are very slim.

What this means is that unlike in previous elections when a simple plurality declared one a winner, in 2016, one can only win by 50 +1. Zambia will surely go for the re-run between PF and UPND—something new to our political process. Should we have a re-run, smaller parties will determine the next president. It is therefore imperative that the public and all political cadres are educated about this requirement to avoid violence on the streets. Currently the Electoral Commission seems to ignore this sensitive reality.

The UPND has refused to be intimidated by PF. After a horde of PF cadres attacked a UPND double decker bus in Munali yesterday afternoon, hurling rocks that caused injury and stealing UPND materials, a UPND team swept up the broken glass and checked on fellow supporters before continuing on to the University of Zambia.

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema said the Zambian youth are hungry for change. They want universities that stay open, they want a government that doesn’t withhold meal allowances while ministers are busy feeding themselves, and most of all they want jobs and business opportunities.

Mr.Hichilema said UPND is ready to deliver its 10 Point Plan by cutting waste and fighting corruption. He said UPND is ready to support and empower business professionals, entrepreneurs and civil society leaders of tomorrow.

President Lungu
President Edgar Lungu has implored election observers in the country to stop transmitting falsehood about the electoral process to their institutions.

President Lungu says observers should instead verify the information they gather with all concerned parties.

The President says it is disturbing that some observers are transmitting lies told by the opposition UPND.

President Lungu says he has on several occasion pledged to deliver a free, transparent, and fair election and that his position will not change.

The President says the opposition UPND has just failed to sell their message to the electorates hence the desperate attempts to mislead the International community.

President Lungu has since challenged the observer missions to interrogate information they obtain from political players and other stakeholders with relevant authorities.

The President also encouraged election Overseers to find out why UPND is saying they will not accept defeat after this Thursday’s poll.

President Lungu said this at State House today when he held meetings with four observer missions.

And African Union head of mission Goodluck Jonathan says his team is impressed and satisfied with the process so far.

Mr. Jonathan who is also former Nigerian President said he is hopeful that Zambia will maintain its good reputation of holding free and fair election.

He has however urged all Presidential candidates to accept the outcome of the elections.

Meanwhile former Mauritius President, Cassam Uttem says Zambia should remain the beacon of peace in Africa after the polls.

Mr. Uttem who is heading the delegation of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa -EISA- observer mission said his team is equally satisfied with the process.

President Lungu also held talks with European and Commonwealth observer mission delegates
