MISA Zambia Chairperson Hellen Mwale speaks to Journalists after she toured the closed Post Newspapers
The Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) -Zambia has joined other organisations and foreign observers in praising MUVI TV station for fair and balanced coverage of the 2016 general elections.
MISA Zambia Chairperson Helen Mwale said MUVI TV station deserves to be commended for covering elections in a balanced manner to the satisfaction of stakeholders.
Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Ms Mwale urged both public and private Media to emulate MUVI TV of how the media should operate in a democratic country such as Zambia.
Ms Mwale said MUVI TV covered the August 11, 2016 elections in a balanced manner before, during and after the voting exercise.
She however, also said MISA Zambia is disappointed with some sections of the Media that decided not to report the 2016 elections in a balanced manner.
She also said MISA Zambia is further dismayed with some community and privately owned radio stations for taking political sides in the coverage of this year’s elections.
Ms Mwale charged that said such media institutions are a disgrace to the media fraternity.
The Trade Union movement in the country and some foreign observer missions praised MUVI TV station for fair and balanced coverage of the 2016 general elections.

His closest rival UPND’s Lloyd Lubosha amassed 11,438 votes followed by Aaron Kaona of the FDD with 189 and 474 ballots were rejected from the total 29,367 votes cast.
The presidential votes for Chifubu are still being verified.

“Congratulations to my big brother Given Lubinda and the PF for retaining the Kabwata seat. We are proud to say we ran an honest and corrupt-free campaign and we did what we could within our means and like in any other race, there must be but only one winner and this time it wasn’t us. Today we took one on the chin but again that’s what real men do – get up, dust yourself and start all over again,” Mr Zulu said.
And MMD candidate in the Munali parliamentary seat Mike Mposha has also congratulated Professor Nkandu Luo who stood on the PF ticket for retaining the seat.
“As Prof Luo is headed for victory in Munali, first of all I wish to thank God for giving me the energy and a Team which worked tirelessly on our mission,” Mr Mposha said.
“Secondly, I do not regret to have made this decision to stand as it is my democratic right to vote and contest elections. I congratulate PF for winning the seat. To my family, friends, Church leaders, all Churches and my campaign team, Thank you for your support., life continues. I will not abandon anyone of you. Munali is our home, let’s continue doing the little we can even outside parliament. Many thanks, May God bless you all.”
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission of Zambia has pushed its early awaited press conference which was set for 14 Hours this afternoon to 15 Hours to allow for further verification of the election results.
RTSA chief executive officer Zindaba SokoThe Road Transport and Safety Agency has urged all Zambians to uphold the spirit of peace and safer road culture as they celebrate the outcome of the General Elections.
In a message from the Agency in Lusaka today, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Zindaba Soko noted that election time was one of critical periods when there was always an increase in human and vehicular traffic that posed challenges to road safety.
Mr. Soko has since called on motorists to sustain peace and consider other road users during the election celebrations.
In anticipation of an increase in traffic, the Agency has deployed adequate road traffic enforcement officers to provide necessary logistics at strategic locations across the country to address safety challenges.
“Let me also use this opportunity to congratulate all Zambians for upholding road safety rules and regulations during the voting day. As an Agency, we want to assure all Zambians that RTSA will continue to work hard to ensure that roads remain safer throughout this period and beyond,” he said.
“Our Call Centre remains open to receive calls from the public in relation to road safety matters for prompt mobilization of rescue operations while our partners and others stakeholders are on alert,” he said.
Mr. Soko has commended the RTSA staff for the commitment they displayed during the General Election by joining hands with other security agencies and Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to carry out the electoral duties most diligently and supporting the nation in the task of achieving its socio-economic goals.
Zesco United for a valuable away result this evening in Egypt that will hand them their 2016 CAF Champions League semifinal place with a game in hand.
George Lwandamina’s side take on Al Ahly away in Suez this evening in a 20h30 kickoff in a match that will be live on SuperSport 9.
Zesco beat the record eight-time champions 3-2 in the first leg meeting on June 18 in Ndola to go top of Group A on match day one.
Zesco are currently second on 7 points, tied with leaders Wydad Casablanca of Morocco.
Hosts Al Ahly are 3rd on 4 points and level on points with bottom of the log ASEC Mimosa who visit Wydad on Sunday.
Zesco have never beaten Al Ahly away and lost there 1-0 in their last visit against the Cairo giants six years ago.
But Zesco captain and goalkeeper Jacob Banda is confident they can pick up a dramaic win in Egypt where Al Ahly have already lost once to ASEC where the Cote d’Ivoire side won 2-1 on June 28.
“I think it is possible to complete a double over Al Ahly looking at the way we are playing and the crop of players we have assembled,” Banda said.
Victory will see Zesco become the first Zambian club to adbance to the Champions League semifinals.

“Our preparations have been going on well. The boys have been putting in more efforts in training and we are ready for Saturday game,” Sakala said.
Coach Bruce Mwape’s Nchanga overcame Buffaloes 1-0 in the reverse fixture on April 9 in Chingola.
“The second round is crucial all teams want to get points. We beat them (Buffaloes) at home but they are a good side. I am sure they have prepared for us.”
Buffaloes are placed fourth on the table with 36 points from 21 matches, while ninth placed Nchanga have 27 points.
“Our position is not ok. We are supposed to be at least three or four places up the table. We need to regain for and move to a safer position,” Sakala said.
Queues of voters at Muljala School polling station in Livingstone yesterday. Picture by BRIAN HATYOKAThe Anti-Voter Apathy Project (AVAP)has commended Zambians for turning out in large numbers to vote in Thursday’s general elections and referendum.
AVAP Executive Director Richwell Mulwani said it is pleasing to note that Zambia has recorded a high voter turnout during this year’s elections.
Speaking to ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today, Mr Mulwani said that his organization is overwhelmed by the large numbers of Zambians that turned out to cast their votes.
Mr. Mulwani said that this year’s elections have shown how serious the Zambian people are in exercising their rights and choosing leaders of their choice.
He also commended the Zambia Police for working round the clock during the voting period and urged the law enforcement agencies to continue ensuring that peace prevails .
He further asked the general public that in the event of a re run, they should again turn up in numbers and cast their votes until a winner is declared.
Mr. Mulwani appealed to the general public to remain calm and wait for the final results from the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
And former Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) Executive Director Mcdonald Chipenzi said that the high turnout of voters is inspiring.
Mr. Chipenzi, now an election expert further said that the high turnout of people shows that Zambians appreciate the democratic dispensation prevailing in the country.
MEMBERS of different political parties pose for a picture to show a unity of purpose as they wait for results from the 2016 General Election at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has appealed for calm as anxiety starts building among Zambians over delays to announce official elections results from Thursday’s crucial general election.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Priscilla Isaac said the Commission is not deliberately delaying the announcement of results.
Ms. Isaac said the public should realise that there is a huge volume of work that has to go through in the counting process especially that there were five ballots on voting day.
She emphasised that the Commission has to receive and verify the results from all the polling stations in each constituency before announcing them at the national totalling centre.
Ms. Isaac revealed that the nation will only start releasing officially verified totals at constituency level at the next briefing expected to be at around 12 Hours.
She however emphasised that the Commission Chairman Justice Essau Chulu who is also the returning officer of the presidential election is expected to release the first batch of official presidential results at around 14 Hours.
Ms Isaac said anything else circulating on social media is not authentic results and should be disregarded.
“You have to bear with us, we want to give you factual updates and this will only happen after we receive results from all polling stations in each constituency before announcing them,” Ms. Isaac said.
She added, “We again appeal for calm. I know we are all anxious to get the results.”
And Ms. Isaac has disclosed that voting at all polling stations across the country including those that delayed opening has now closed.
“All polling stations managed to close with the latest being Namabunga in Nalolo at 02:00 Hours and Kazungula at Kaningwa Community school. Counting of votes is still ongoing with polling stations that have finished currently transmitting to their totalling centres,” she said.
Rising stars Chanda Mbao and Kaladoshas unveil their highly anticipated summer hit single, “My Town”, that celebrates their heritage and showcases their hometown to the world. This is the duos second collaboration this year after the release of the WizKid cover, “Shabba” .
“My Town” was produced by London-based Zambian producer Greezy Beatz. The video was directed by DJ Lo of IKONIK Media ,one of Zambia’s leading production houses. The picturesque visuals present the various sights found in the artists’ hometown, Lusaka.
August 12th, the day after their country Zambia held an election was chosen as the release date. Asked about this choice, Chanda Mbao noted that because elections can be times of anxiety and uncertainty, he wanted to release something light-hearted to celebrate his home and revel in its beauty, particularly because the spotlight is on Zambia right now.
Both Chanda Mbao and Kaladoshas are by no means slowing down the pace as they intend on putting their county ,Zambia, on the map.
Look out for more big releases from Chanda this year and beyond.
Growing up I never really enjoyed hot and spicy food. Whilst my friends and family all enjoyed their chillies, I was always too scared to try them out. Let’s just say the idea of a burnt tongue and taste buds was not appealing. However living in the UK gave me the chance to meet a variety of people from different cultures; so naturally I started to explore different foods and flavours. I quickly realised that by incorporating small amounts of chilli to my meals, I would gradually become more and more tolerant of the heat and the sting. Although I am yet to eat an entire Scotch Bonnet; I am able to enjoy meals such as this – Jollof rice with Chicken. So here is one of my favourite recipes, if you are like me start with a small amount of chilli, and as you become “braver” increase the amount gradually. Enjoy.
Ingredients
8 chicken thighs, cut into large pieces (with the skin on for extra flavour)
Season the chicken with salt, pepper and garlic powder.
On a high heat; heat 2 tbsps of the oil in a large frying pan, add the chicken and fry for about 5 mins until it turns golden all over. Remove it from the pan and set aside.
Add the rest of the oil to the pan and fry the onions until translucent, about 5 mins. While the onions cook, make the ginger and chilli base. Put the garlic, tomatoes, ginger and chilli into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
Add tomato purée to the onions, fry for another 2 mins then add the ginger and chilli mixture. Crumble in the stock cube and stir well; pour in 600ml boiling water, add the chicken, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 mins.
Put the rice into a large bowl, and wash the grains. Repeat the process twice until the water runs clear. Add the rice to the pan; turn the heat down to a simmer then cover with foil and a lid (so no steam can escape). Cook for 20 mins.
Take the lid off (the rice won’t be cooked yet) then scatter the peppers and okra over the rice. Cover again and cook until the vegetables have softened and the rice is tender, about 10 minutes. Mix the chicken back in, and allow all the flavours to set for 10 minutes.
Serving
Serve whilst piping hot, with your choice of beverage. Be careful, this will be hot and spicy. Enjoy!

Swimmer Ralph Goveia finished 1st in heat 2 of the 100 meters butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games but his time was not enough to see him progress to the semifinals.
The Olympic debutant finished with a time of 56.34 seconds but it fell short of the 52.08 threshold to make the cut for the top 16.
Goveia become the fourth athlete from Team Zambia ejected from the Rio Olympics.
He joins Mathews Punza in the Judo, boxer Ben Muziyo and swimmer Jade Howard eliminated from the Olympics.
Team Zambia on Saturday turn their medal hopes to track athletes Gerald Phiri in the 100 meter heats and Kabange Mupopo in the womens 200 and 300 meter heats.
The duo are two of three representatives still in the hunt in Brazil together with Jordan Chipangama.
Chipangama will be the last Zambian to start his campaign in the men’s marathon on August 21.
Nchito
Lusaka Lawyer Mutembo Nchito has Petitioned the Constitutional Court asking them to nullify President Edgar Lungu’s decision to relieve him of his duties as Director of Director of Public Prosecutions.
Nchito has argued that on 7th January, 2016, the President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu assented to the Constitution of Zambia Amendment Act, Number 2 of 2012.
And that on 23rd February, 2016, Nchito wrote to the President reminding him of the changes in the law which made it legally untenable for the Mutembo Nchito Tribunal to continue sitting and requesting him to comply with the provisions of Article 144 of the Constitution as amended.
Nchito argues that he delivered the said letter to the President’s Special Assistant for Legal who acknowledged receipt.
Nchito has submitted that he never received a reply from the President but instead he was berated in the news media by the President’s Special Assistant for Press Mr. Amos Chanda who announced that ‘State House would be ignoring his letters.
President Lungu has now written to Nchito relieving him of his duties allegedly acting pursuant to Article 144 of the Constitution and basing his decision on a Report that has not been disclosed to Nchito. Nchito is not aware of any proceedings before the Judicial Complaints Commission pursuant to Article 144 of the Constitution nor has he ever appeared or been summoned to appear before the Judicial Complaints Commission.
Mutembo submits that by virtue of the above, his right as Director of Public Prosecutions to be treated fairly and if necessary investigated under Article 144 of the Constitution by the Judicial Complaints Commission has been violated.
He has therefore prayed that it be declared that there has never been an investigation involving him before the Judicial Complaints Commission pursuant to Article 144 of the Constitution and that the President’s action of purporting to relieve the Petitioner of his position as Director of Public Prosecutions pursuant to Article 144 of the Constitution without there having been an inquiry under Article 144 of the Constitution is unconstitutional and therefore illegal, null and void and that all actions taken by the President after purportedly relieving the Petitioner of his duties including any appointment of a replacement Director of Public Prosecutions be declared null and void.

ECZ director Priscilla Isaac s
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has urged members of the public to ignore election results being posted on social media by some individuals and organisations.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Priscilla Isaac said the public should disregard any results circulating on social media adding that the Commission is the only institution mandated to release official election results.
Ms. Isaac was speaking this evening during the last ECZ stakeholders briefing at the Results Centre at Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
She was responding to concerns by the Patriotic Front through its member of its Media Committee Brian Hapunda who asked for the Commission’s position on reports that the Post Newspapers is planning to declare Hakainde Hichilema as a winner in tomorrow’s edition of the newspaper.
And some unverified exit results have flooded the social media showing a tight race between Edgar Lungu and Hakainde Hichilema.
But Ms. Isaac said it will be irresponsible for any media house to rush to publish unofficial election results without verifying them with the Commission.
She said some polling stations that opened as late as 16:05 will be given additional time to complete the voting process meaning the process in some cases will go on until tomorrow morning.
“So how then can someone declare a winner in voting in some parts of the country is still going on. Even as we speak, some polling stations are still open,” Ms. Isaac said.
And Ms. Isaac has commended the electorate for turning out in large numbers in Thursday’s election and conducting themselves in a peaceful manner even with the long queues.
The Commission will hold its next stakeholders briefing tomorrow at 10 Hours.
Electoral officers checking the ballot boxes
Counting of ballots is underway in Zambia 2016 general election after polls closed at 18 hours .
In Livingstone voting closed around 18: 00 hours in several polling stations of the Constituency with a sustained high voter turnout.
A check at Dambwa Central Welfare Hall, Old Boma, Rainbow, Mars Clinic and Dambwa Basic School revealed that the voting process has closed around 18: 00 hours.
However, there were few cases where voting opened slightly after 06:00 hours in the morning and the polls closed after 18:00 hours to accommodate the lost time.
By 19:00 hours, the counting of ballot papers had started in most stations.
Southern Province Commissioner of Police Godwin Phiri said the voting exercise had been very peaceful in the Province from the time that polls opened around 06:00 hours.
However, there some polling stations that delayed to open at 6am and will not have closed at 18hours.
Meanwhile voting is under way at Muchinga in Mansa Central due to high voter turnout because as long as a voter turned up for voting before 18 hours they cannot be turned away until the cast the vote.
Muchinga Presiding Officer John Kalombo said the station has 4, 995 voters and by press time over 3,000 had voted.
The Presiding Officer at Kaole Rest House Lumanda Evans in Bahati constituency said 1 500 had cast their votes at close time.
At the Civic centre polling station Mansa Central only 400 electorates cast their ballots out of the 800 registered number of voters.
Meanwhile the Electoral Commission of Zambia says it will follow up with the suppliers of the self-inking stamps used in the official marking of ballot papers in today’s polls.
ECZ Director Priscilla Isaac says the stamps used in the voting process were giving faint marks after marking a certain number of ballots.
Speaking during a briefing at the Results Center this evening, Mrs Isaac said the polling staff were advised to mark the ballot papers with the word “Official” in the presence of monitors and polling agents.
Mrs Isaac said the alternative provision communicated to poll staff is the use of ink pads.
Meanwhile, the commission has disclosed that voting in selected wards of Nalolo started at 16:05.
Mrs Isaac said the polling staff had challenges delivering the election materials due to the bad terrain in the area.
She explained that the first vehicle as well as the retrieval one broke down.
She however disclosed that the ECZ has arranged with Zambia Airforce to have the staff retrieved once voting closes in the early hours of the morning.
Meanwhile Residents and electoral stakeholders in Mansa Luapula province say the high voter turn out recorded in today’s polls is a clear indication that Zambia is a champion of democracy and beacon of Peace in Africa.
The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) is happy that voter turnout in today’s elections in Zambia have started on a high note.
European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Chief Observer Cecile Kyenge told Reporters Thursday morning in Lusaka that approximately half of the observed polling stations opened on time, while the rest of them opened with less than one hour of delay.
Ms. Kyenge said polling stations where EU observers were present were peaceful at the time of the opening.
Chief Observer Cecile Kyenge presented some early information about the opening of the polling stations and the beginning of the voting procedure, when she visited Kalingalinga Middle Basic School in Lusaka.
“We are happy to see so many people coming to vote – it shows that Zambians understand the importance of elections, and they value their democratic rights” She said.
Ms. Kyenge added that essential election material was available in the majority of the observed polling stations, and EU observers witnessed long queues of voters waiting patiently to cast their vote.
By the time of their 7:30 AM report, EU observers have not witnessed any serious incident around polling stations.
The EU election observers reported that they were able to observe the voting process in the visited polling stations without any undue restriction so far.
Ms Kyenge added, however, that the available information is based on the first reports that the mission received from its observer teams in the early morning, and more information will be coming in later during the day.
The EU EOM has on the ground over 120 observers who are following the voting process in all 10 provinces of Zambia.
Observers report their observations throughout election day to the Core Team in Lusaka, which analyses the received data.
On election day the mission focuses on the voting process, the counting and tabulation, and also the transmission of results.
