Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja
Inspector General of Police Kakoma Kanganja says the Zambia Police Service has not received any report of a woman believed to have been attacked by UPND cadres in Southern Province.
Some news outlets have reported that a female Teacher identified as Pamela Chanda was brutally attacked by UPND cadres in Southern Province after they identified her as a Bemba.
But in a statement, Mr Kanganja said the Police Service is concerned with the ongoing speculations concerning a video that has gone viral on social media showing a woman being attacked by UPND supporters.
“We would however like to state that as Zambia Police Service we have not received any formal report of this incident. Efforts have been made and are still being made to locate the victim and place of this incident. So far Police officers have been dispatched to Southern and Western Provinces to try and locate the victim of this incident,” Mr Kanganja said.
“We are therefore appealing to any person or persons who may know the whereabouts of this victim to report to the nearest police station so that the offenders can be brought to book.”
The Police IG has since reiterated his appeal to all peace-loving Zambians to desist from engaging in violent activities.
“As Zambia Police Service we will sternly deal with perpetrators of violence regardless of their political affiliation.”

Information and Broadcasting Minister Chishimba Kambwili has laughed off reports that he has fallen out with President Edgar Lungu ahead of next month’s general election.
Social media reports are rife that there is a rift between Dr Kambwili and President Lungu after the Roan PF MP questioned President Lungu’s stance on some adoption of PF parliamentary candidates.
The reports claim that Dr Kambwili has now launched plans to set up an underground parallel PF Central Committee which we will use to take over the PF in an event that the party lost the general elections.
It is also reported that President Lungu has since written disciplinary letter to Dr Kambwili questioning over his plans.
“I just had a good chat with my boss and we laughed about the ghost writers signing fake disciplinary letters. He said “Kambwili have you seen my letter, I wrote it in my sleep”.
Posting on his Facebook page, Dr Kambwili said he has a good and healthy relationship with President Lungu.
“I just had a good chat with my boss and we laughed about the ghost writers signing fake disciplinary letters. He said “Kambwili have you seen my letter, I wrote it in my sleep”.
Dr Kambwili accused the UPND of spreading falsehoods about his relationship with President Lungu.
“I have damaged UPND on the Copperbelt and I am not done yet, this one is for my president whom people are so desperate to cause confusion between us,” Dr Kambwili said.
“They are 23 other ministers and I am failing to understand why the opposition are targeting me. But bring it on I thrive off propaganda and lies because it gives me motivation to go harder.
Continue we shall see how far it takes you. In other news, I will be in Kabwe tomorrow doing my job for one Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Kabwe and Bwacha get ready.”
UPND Chairman for Rural Reconstruction and Development Moono Mapani
The opposition UPND has expressed concern that the recent statement by President Lungu warning the opposition to accept the results of the forthcoming general elections is worrying.
UPND Chairman for Rural Reconstruction and Development Moono Mapani says the party will not accept to see the PF manipulate the results.
Mr. Mapani says the voice of the people should be heard through the ballot and not intimidate the opposition with stern action in an event that the results are tempered with.
He says the opposition cannot accept the results when they see that the results are manipulated.
Mr. Mapani says the strong statement by President Lungu is testimony that they are planning to rig the elections and that is why they are warning the opposition in advance so that they do not act when the election results are manipulated.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mapani has expressed shock that the Law Association of Zambia has u-turned on the issue of holding the referendum alongside the elections after taking a firm stance earlier that the referendum be held independently.
He says the reasons given by the LAZ are weak just because the exercise is supported by President Lungu.
Oldemiro Baloi
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) says it has concluded that Zambia is prepared and ready to hold elections on 11th August concurrently with the referendum.
Speaking during the launch of the SEOM to the 2016 general elections, Oldemiro Baloi head of mission has encouraged the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to conduct its work professionally citing that the political leadership should also lead by example in terms of electoral behavior.
Mr. Baloi who is also Mozambique minister of foreign affairs and cooperation says it is also important for the electorate to act responsibly.
He says they are confident that the deployment of their observers will contribute to enhance the credibility of the overall electoral process.
Mr. Baloi has appealed to Zambians to follow the laid down procedures should there be any areas of disagreement during the process.
He has further urged political parties to adhere and accept the results of the elections and lodge their complaints and grievances through the relevant institutions such as the constitutional court.
SADC Electoral Observation Mission has deployed 49 observers across the country to observe the august 11th general elections.
Information Minister Dr. Chishimba Kambwili when he addressed a mammoth rally at President’s Park in Kasama today. The Minister is in Northern Province to conduct a series of public rallies to explain government programmes.
Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services and Chief Government spokesperson, Dr Chishimba Kambwili has condemned the beating of a teacher in Sinazongwe Southern province for allegedly belonging to another tribe and being suspected to be a Patriotic Front sympathiser.
In a statement released to the media, Dr Kambwili said that the savage beating of a teacher by UPND cadres in Sinazongwe Southern province has again brought to the fore the intolerant nature of the opposition party and their violent agenda.
Below is the full statement
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON, HON. DR CHISHIMBA KAMBWILI ON THE BEATING OF A TEACHER IN SINAZONGWE SOUTHERN PROVINCE
Government is once again astounded at the violence being perpetrated by the United Party for National Development (UPND).
The savage beating of a teacher by UPND cadres in Sinazongwe Southern province has again brought to the fore the intolerant nature of the opposition party and their violent agenda.
Pamela Chanda, a teacher at Maunga primary school in Sinazongwe, Southern Province, was brutally wounded by UPND supporters and a video of this savage beating has gone viral.
She was attacked only because she is from another tribe and was suspected to be a Patriotic Front sympathiser.
Government has been preaching peace for a long time but it seems there is one party that is fully determined to ensure there is lawlessness in the country and has been encouraging hooliganism among its supporters.
But Government would like to remind the UPND once again that Zambia is a unitary state and Southern province belongs to all Zambians, therefore, no Zambian should be denied the right to belong to any party of their choice and indeed to associate freely with any political grouping anywhere in Zambia.
No tribe or political party has the monopoly or exclusivity in any part or province of Zambia.
Zambia belongs to all the 73 tribes, therefore, it is unreasonable for the UPND to think southern province is politically exclusive to the UPND.
The politics being practised by the UPND, especially, in Southern province are pre-historic but government will ensure any acts of violence are nipped in the bud.
Government will ensure perpetrators of violence before, during, and after the elections are caged and there shall be no selected arrests. All savages, like those in the video brutalising Pamela, will face the law.
Government hopes the police command in southern province shall identify and isolate Pamela’s attackers from society.
We yet again call upon the UPND leadership to educate their supporters about the importance of unity and peace and to control their violent cadres.
Let us live as one regardless of our political affiliation. Let us tolerate each others political views even when we do not agree with them. Let us rise above petty politics. There is only one Zambia one Nation.
Meanwhile, the UPND leader Haikainde Hichilema has released the following statement on political violence
UPND President Hakainde Hichilema
OFFICIAL STATEMENT
HH Responds to Attacks
The increase in the level of violence in the country since 2011 is deeply saddening. We now hear of violent attacks on a daily basis as perpetrators roam free.
The UPND has been strong in its condemnation of all acts of violence, regardless of provocation but shocking reports of a PF supporter being beaten and killed yesterday have compelled me to address this matter once again.
I want to be clear while there is room for everyone in the UPND family there is no room for violence or threatening behaviour.
Violence stands against everything we are as a party and everything we want for our great nation. It is abhorrent.
We call on our law enforcers, the police and the courts, to bring to justice all those guilty of attacking their fellow citizens, including those who shed blood just yesterday. If these reports are true then regardless of whether the perpetrators are UPND, PF or from any other party they must be held to account for the actions. We will cooperate in any way that we can to ensure that the culprits are brought to book.
With just 11 days until elections I want to appeal to every Zambian to come together and put an end to this terrible trend of increasing violence. Only together can we build a country we are proud of and a country our children feel safe in.
“…do not throw your pearls before swine…”
(Matthew 7:6, NASB)
Choose Your Friends Wisely
Do you realize you have treasure on the inside of you? You could say that your pearls are what God has given you to be a blessing to the world around you—your gifts, talents and abilities. When you get around true friends, people who really believe in you, they won’t be jealous of your gifts.
They won’t constantly question who you are. They won’t try to talk you out of your dreams. It will be just the opposite. They’ll help you polish your pearls, so to speak. They’ll help you develop and grow your pearls. In other words, they’ll give you ideas.
They’ll connect you with people they know. They’ll help push you further along. If you stay around people who don’t value your gifts nor appreciate what you have to offer, that’s casting your pearls among swine. Swine don’t value pearls; they trample on them.
Your inner circle, those who are closest to you, should be people who celebrate who you are; people who are happy when you succeed. They should be people who believe the very best in you.
Remember, it’s not the quantity of friends that’s important, it’s the quality of friends. Choose your friends wisely so you can be all that God has called you to be.
A Prayer for Today
“Father, thank You for the gifts, talents and abilities You have given to me. Help me to recognize the treasure within. Give me wisdom to discern the right relationships You have ordained for me in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Nkana supporters gave striker Ronald Kampamba a thunderous welcome as he featured in the club’s 2-0 win over Mufulira Blackpool at Nkana Stadium on Saturday.
Kampamba, who has rejoined Nkana after professional stints in Egypt and Belgium, replaced Simon Bwalya just after the break much to the jubilation of home supporters.
Sate Sate’s appearance in this round 20 match of the 2016 FAZ Super Division overshadowed Walter Bwalya’s exploits that saw the striker grab a brace before missing a late penalty.
Bwalya gave Nkana a 29th minute lead when he finished a Shadrick Musonda cross with a head.
Two minutes later, Bwalya doubled the home side’s lead after converting a penalty awarded by Solwezi referee Mateyo Ngulube when Blackpool defender David Sichilima handled in the box.
Bwalya was later in the second half denied a chance to score a brace by keeper Reuben Chisala who saved his penalty after Michael Silengo hacked Shadrick Musonda in the box.
This win ensured that Nkana stayed second on the table after increasing their tally to 38 points.

The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) says it has made a profit of US$13.50 million for the just ended financial year of 2015 to 2016.
The jointly owned railway firm has since projected to generate about US$44.10 million in the 2016/2017 financial year due to a turnaround in business and cost-effective operations.
TAZARA has attributed the profit to improved business resulting from increased haulage from 87,000 metric tons of freight in the 2014/2015 financial year to 130,000 metric tons in the 2015/2016 financial year.
This is according to a communique issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today by TAZARA Board of Directors at its 108th meeting held on 29th July, 2016 in Lusaka.
Dr Leonard Chamuriho who is Tanzania’s permanent Secretary for Transport and Communication signed the communique together with his Zambian counterpart Engineer Misheck Lungu as joint chairpersons of the TAZARA Board.
The communique also points out that TAZARA has made significant improvements in both the inter-state and commuter passenger train operations.
The board has since approved a projected haulage target of 381,000 metric tons of freight and 2,280,000 (interstate and commuter) passengers to be transported in the 2016/2017 financial year that will culminate into total revenue of US$44.10 million.
According to the communique, the Board urged management at the railway firm to actively pursue non-rail business activities in order to supplement its revenues.
The communique further states that TAZARA Management has been directed to be more aggressive towards creating and accommodating proposals for Public-Private Partnerships.
The TAZARA board urged Management to expedite the conclusion of the proposed partnership with the Copperbelt University at the TAZARA Training Centre in Mpika, Muchinga Province as an area for enriching capacity building for the Authority.
The communique pointed out that the TAZARA Act of 1995 is under review in the two countries in order to make the Authority more business-oriented through decentralisation as well as recapitalisation of the firm.
The Board also noted the concerns expressed by customers of TAZARA and other stakeholders in the transport sector in Zambia and Tanzania, on the impact of the introduction of Value-Added Tax on services for goods transiting through the Port of Dar es Salaam.
The TAZARA Board resolved to request the Dar es Salaam Corridor Committee to quickly undertake an independent study and advise on the competitiveness of the Dar es Salaam Port in light of the fiscal policy to other regional ports and the potential impact on TAZARA.
Meanwhile, the TAZARA Board of Directors has strongly directed its management to discontinue the renewal of contracts for retired employees and instead allow younger employees to take over the positions left by exiting staff.
The government of the people’s republic of China together with Tanzania and Zambia are exploring ways of resuscitating and improving operations of the jointly owned railway firm.
Recently, China pledged to inject US$ 376 million into TAZARA for the rehabilitation of the railway infrastructure as an integral part of the Southern Africa regional rail transport network
TAZARA was founded over 40 years ago when Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, Julius Nyerere and Kenneth Kaunda, founding fathers of China, Tanzania and Zambia respectively, visioned connecting East and Southern Africa to promote and sustain regional trade, and social economic development.
However over the last two decades, TAZARA has been under-performing and experienced deterioration in infrastructure due to lack of investment.

MMD lawyers have asked Winnie Zaloumis and to withdrew her statement in which she has created an impression that former Party President Nevers Mumba was reinstated as Party leader or face contempt proceedings.
MMD lawyer Erick Silwamba said the comments by both Mr. Mumba and Ms. Zaloumis which were issued after the Supreme Court ruling are clearly not a correct reflection of the Court Judgment hence should be withdrawn or face legal ramifications.
The MMD Counsel further said Ms Zaloumis attempted to misinterpreted a Supreme Court ruling with the view of misleading the country.
Mr Silwamba has since given both Dr Mumba and Ms Zaloumis 24hrs to retract their statements or face legal ramifications.
The Supreme Court referred the issue of MMD leadership back to the High Court with Zaloumis rushing to the media to claim the appellant court had reinstated Mumba as its leader.
Below is a letter to Mumba and Zaloumis’ lawyers.
Dear Learned State Counsel and Counsel,
RE: WINNIE ZALOUMIS (Sued in her capacit y as Acti ng National Secretary for the Movement for Multiparty Democracy) VS. FELIX MUTATI AND THREE OTHERS – SCZ/8 / 156 /2016
Reference is made to the above captioned matter which is pending delivery of
Judgment on Wednesday, the 3rd day of August, 2016.
It has come to our Client’s attention that your Client Ms. Winnie Zaloumis after the conclusion of the hearing on Wednesday, the 27th instant issued a press statement in the precincts of the Supreme Court of Zambia which was captioned by Muvi TV and broadcast during the Muvi TV Main News at 18:30hours wherein she stated that the Supreme Court of Zambia had ordered the reinstatement of Mr. Nevers Sakwila Mumba as President of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD). This statement was also published on the Muvi TV website (http://www.muvitv.com/2016/07/27/supreme-court-reinstates-dr-nevers-mumba as-legitimate-mmd-president/), her exact words as follows:
“She says today’s judgement effectively reconfirms the status quo of Dr. Nevers Mumba as President of the MMD with all the other legitimate office holders.
Ms Zaloumis says Felix Mutati therefore maintains his expelled status until the court makes another order. She says Rafael Nakacinda also remains suspended from engaging in any party activities.”
Ms. Zaloumis’s statement has also been followed up by several media appearances by Mr. Nevers Sakwila Mumba on Radio Phoenix and an interview with Muvi TV news where Mr. Mumba states that he has been reinstated as MMD President. The comment by both Mr. Mumba and Ms. Zaloumis are clearly not a correct reflection of the Supreme Court Judgment.
The correct position as you know is that the matter has been referred back to the High Court of Zambia for determination of the validity of our Client’s Presidency which your Client impugns. The two statements are clearly meant to prejudice the Supreme Court and High Court proceedings and as such contemptuous.
We therefore demand that your Client issue a statement within twenty four (24) hours retracting the misleading statements that they have made to the Public, failure of which we have instructions to institute Committal Proceedings in. the Supreme Court of Zambia without further recourse to yourselves.

Vice- President Inonge Wina (l) is being briefed by Lands minister Christabel Ngimbu who is also Zambezi west Patriotic Front candidate during a public rally at Mize capitalVICE-PRESIDENT Inonge Wina is today expected in Mwansabombwe District to grace this year’s Umutomboko traditional ceremony.
According to the tentative programme made available to the Times of Zambia, Ms Wina is expected in Mansa Airport this morning at 11 hours.
Ms Wina would later launch the Rural Electrification Authority at Mununsi in Mwansdabombwe before paying a courtesy call on the Mwata Kazembe at his palace.
The Vice president is later in the afternoon expected at the main arena of the ceremony to Grace the occasion.
Yesterday, the Vice president was in Rufunsa district where she held a public rally in Chinyunyu ward to boost support for the Patriotic Front (PF) aspiring Member of Parliament Kenneth Chipungu and President Edger Lungu.
Ms Wina reminded the people of Rufunsa that this was an important period when which people needed to be mindful of when choosing a leader for the next five years.
She said the PF administration was not in the business of making promises but implementing policies as evidenced by the massive infrastructure development doted around the country.
“Some opposition parties are asking you not to vote for PF, they are asking you that are you going to eat roads. But in PF say you can eat roads because there is no meaningful development without a good road network,” Ms Wina said.
She said it was clear that the opposition was not ready to continue with the developmental agenda being implemented by the PF.
She said the PF government had put up an agenda of working on the provision of clean drinking water, irrigation water and dams for the animals.
She said all the developmental projects were guaranteed to the people of Rufunsa only if they voted for President Lungu, Mr Chipungu and the PF.
She said voting for the opposition party in the 11th August general election would derail developmental progress in the constituency.
She urged people of Rufunsa to trust Mr Chupungu as he was an experienced parliamentarian who worked well with the former ruling party MMD.
She said now that Mr Chipungu was in PF, development in the area was going to be accelerated with emphasis on youth empowerment and agriculture support programmes.
Mr Chipungu asked the people of Rufusa to trust and vote for him and President Lungu as development in the area was visible under the PF.
He said granting Rufunsa a district status had seen massive infrastructure development such as the newly contracted district offices, a police post, and electricity with five secondary schools were also under construction.
