United Party for National Development (UPND) has continued to blame failed leadership for the poverty experienced in North Western Province. In a statement released to the media, the UPND leader said that North Western is a major contributor to our economy and rich in mineral wealth and yet the majority of its people remain in poverty.

The UPND leader said that his party’s 10 Point Plan will harness the vast natural resources and empower local people and businesses to grow into thriving and prosperous communities in which every Zambian gets a fair slice of the national cake.

Below is the full statement

UPND Continue Their Tour Of North-Western

Today we concluded our tour of North Western Province with rallies in Solwezi West, Solwezi East and Solwezi Central.

North Western is a major contributor to our economy and rich in mineral wealth. Yet the majority of its people remain in poverty. This story of a rich country but poor people is sadly written all over our nation.

The UPND believes the reason Zambians have failed to benefit properly from the vast natural wealth with which we have been blessed comes down to failed leadership.

Under Lungu and the PF we have a government that helps itself to healthcare while our people are lying sick on the floor, a government that helps itself to salary increases while thousands are made jobless, and a government that leaves our students without meal allowances while ministers dine out during extravagant trips overseas.

As UPND we are offering voters the chance for change on 11th August 2016. We are offering voters a chance for a government that does not shirk its responsibilities or seek to hide behind excuses.

Our 10 Point Plan will harness our vast natural resources and empower local people and businesses to grow into thriving and prosperous communities in which every Zambian gets a fair slice of the national cake.

By investing in education for all and the teaching of practical skills on the one hand, and supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs on the other, we will deliver growth that is inclusive for a united, prosperous and equitable Zambia.

Stop misleading voters on the Referendum Vote, Politicians told

Former Diplomat to the Federal Republic of Nigeria who is also Member of the Patriotic Front (PF) Party National Mobilization team Christine Phiri has warned opposition political parties to stop misleading voters on the referendum vote. Mrs. Phiri told ZANIS in Katete that it was worrisome to see the amount of lies been peddled by the opposition political parties to stop people from voting for the referendum.

She said during her campaign tour in Eastern province she has discovered that many voters have been misled by the opposition political parties who want to cause voter apathy by lying to people that the referendum vote was a scheme of rigging the elections by the Patriotic Front (PF) and also a way of allowing homosexuality in Zambia.

She explained that the Patriotic Front party has gone round the country to encourage people to vote (YES) in the referendum as it has seen the potential the proposed bill of rights has in adding value to people’s lives.

She added that the referendum vote was nothing political but aimed at increasing the number of rights and freedoms people of Zambia enjoy and further compel government to provide for its citizens.

Mrs. Phiri further explained that discouraging people from voting for the referendum was tantamount to denying them of their good and casting a spell on their future.

She noted that the referendum vote has nothing to do with political votes that will be cast on the Presidential, parliamentary, ward councillors and council chairpersons as it was meant to accept or deny additions proposed in the bill of rights which are aimed at strengthening the current rights people enjoy.

She urged people of Zambia to turn out in large numbers on 11 th August and vote for the Patriotic Front president and candidates at all levels together with the Referendum for Zambia to continue on its developmental path. She said people should understand that the Presidential election will be held under a majoritarian system which requires that the winner amasses over 50 percent plus 1 vote failure to which a fresh election will be called. She pointed out that people should further understand that failure to have a presidential winner in the first election will be costly for the nation and will derail development as more resources will be lost.

Meanwhile Mrs. Phiri has expressed happiness at the amount of support the people of Msolo in Mambwe district have rendered to the Patriotic Front government. She said on Tuesday during her courtesy call on Chief Msolo at his palace, Chief Msoro thanked President Edgar Lungu for increasing the monthly allowance to traditional leaders in the country.

Mrs. Phiri said the Chief requested her to pass on his gratitude to the president adding that the increment had come at a right time when many chiefs in the country were suffering. She said the Chief in his speech explained that Chiefs in the country had a huge role to play as custodians of the people hence needed adequate support to help them manage their affairs. After her Courtesy call the former Diplomat explained that she late held a meeting at the Msolo palace where 16 indunas and headmen attended to listen to her referendum sensitization massage and campaign for President Edgar Lungu.

She noted that among other things that the people of Msolo were looking forward was the construction of Katete- Msolo road to open a trade route among between the two districts. She however assured the people of Msolo that the Patriotic Front government once elected back into office will ensure that all developmental projects here-marked are started and completed on time.

The Dangers of Election Violence and Tribalism

Introduction

The twin ugly problems of tribalism and election violence could easily plunge our otherwise beloved peaceful nation of Zambia into utter mayhem. This is why ahead of the August 11 Presidential elections, every citizen in and outside the country must be vigilant in denouncing these two evils. Do not take this advice as hyperbole, exaggeration or just a bored ivory tower ignorant intellectual Zambian away from Zambia who is being needlessly alarmist. I was in Zambia recently for 6 weeks during the election campaigns. I travelled to villages in Lundazi. I travelled all the way to Solwezi. I saw cities such as Kitwe, Chingola, Kalulushi, and Ndola.
Since the last and this coming election, too many provocative allegations and grievances have just been boiling underneath the political surface. They may just need some incident which will be like lighting a match and the nation can explode into violence. Reports of election violence have led to a lot of finger pointing about who started or is doing it. The police appear powerless. It appears the leaders of political parties are unwilling to openly condemn and take responsibility where the violence and even some deaths have reportedly occurred due to political election violence and sometimes recklessness caused by some members of their political parties.

Taking Peace for Granted

Because the Zambian nation has never experienced the tragic dark forces of wide spread election violence, deadly conflict or war since independence in 1964, it is easy for leaders and the entire nation to be complacent and assume that it cannot happen to us. We should never fool ourselves specially leaders of the political parties. The most recent example is the post-election violence that occurred in Kenya in 2007-2008 between the Kikuyus and Luos and many other so-called tribes. Hundreds were killed and perhaps thousands displaced trying to escape the violence. We should all be aware that it can happen in our country. It can happen if from the top political party leaders all the way to the cadres in the streets and villages no one is loudly warning and advising everyone that political election violence is unZambian.

History

The citizens of Zambia and leaders need to know why tribalism and its twin evil of racism that Europeans hatched, have always led to unimaginable torture, violence, and liberation wars. I have been privileged in my long college or University teaching career to have studied the causes of tribal, racial and ethnic conflicts all over the world especially since European colonialism in the world over the last 300 years. Europeans created racism to justify the exploiting and oppressing of non-European peoples all over the world including in Africa and Zambia.

There is no scientific or social evidence that a white person is inherently superior to a black person because of his or her race or white skin color. There is no scientific or social evidence that a black person is naturally inferior to a white person because of his or her race or black skin color. Any social and economic differences between the races were and are socially created or constructed and maintained. This is the most difficult idea to see and appreciate because most of us do not know what we don’t know.
The same argument applies to tribalism in Zambia and all of Africa today. There is no one tribe in Zambia of the 72 tribes that is naturally superior to all other tribes. There is no one tribe that is naturally inferior to all other 72 tribes in Zambia. All the tribal differences you might see in Zambia whether political leadership, education, levels of development, regional differences in development, and many others were all socially created or constructed. This means as a nation we can together fix or find solutions to those problems in order to eliminate the tribal differences.

Tribal Conflict in Africa

Many nations in Africa alone have experienced tremendous racial and tribe-based turmoil, violence, deaths and sometimes war due to deeply entrenched racial, tribal, and religious differences. But not we Zambians. The Biafra War in Nigeria was from 1967 to 1970. It was the Igbo fighting the rest of Nigeria. Somalia was torn apart in the early 1990s. That country has not recovered. The Tutsi and Hutu tribal conflict in Rwanda led to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda in which 800,000 people were killed. This tribal conflict went back to the 1850s. There has been unimaginable religious violence among Christians and Muslims in the Central African Republic. White Rhodesians caused the deadly war in Zimbabwe and then the tribal conflict that followed after independence in 1980 was tragic and deadly. South Africa and the whites created the deadly racist apartheid policy which has left deep scars in that nation. The list is long of these tribal conflicts. Why not Zambia?

Zambia Lucky and Blessed

Zambia is both lucky and blessed. Soon after Zambia’s independence in 1964, the small number of white die hard racist settlers fled to mostly Rhodesia and racist Apartheid South Africa at the time. Those few whites did not like that Zambia had come be ruled by black Africans. That was lucky for us. Then our founders made one of the best, and wisest decisions in the whole world: they wanted Zambia to be a non-racial and non-tribal society.

They did not just engage in mere slogans or talk. They went ahead and implemented the policy in education, government, political leadership, hospitals, entertainment, national broadcasting, the police, the army, the air force, higher education and all avenues of the Zambian life. The leaders relentlessly preached love and tolerance among all of us among the 72 tribes. This is why today Zambia is probably the most peaceful and well integrated society not just in Africa but in the world. If any of the developed countries were as well integrated as we are, they would be boasting about it everywhere. We would be reading about it in all textbooks from Grade One to University level.

Stay Vigilant

Because many of us Zambians do not know what we don’t know, we may take the peace and tranquility for granted. We may engage in incendiary rhetoric, election and other violence not knowing that we have it so good. Other nations in Africa and the world do not have it that good. This is why during these coming elections let’s all be very vigilant, exercise restraint and carry this peace forward. The peace we enjoy is the best gift and heritage our founders could have given us as a nation.

A 38 year old man of Sakambunda village in Chiyeke died on the spot after he jumped off a moving truck that was ferrying UPND supporters from a rally which was held at Moses Luneta grounds in Chavuma district.

North Western Province commissioner of Police Luckson Sakala confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Sunday Kasoka.

Mr Sakala said Mr Kasoka jumped off a Benz truck registration number ABT 9872 which was being driven by Benjamin Sakandula,27 , of Zambezi district who was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol.

Mr. Sakala said the incident occurred between 16:00 and 17:50 hrs in Chiyeke and Kasoka sustained a suspected fractured skull and bled heavily from the mouth.

The deceased’s body has since been deposited in Chavuma Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

Meanwhile UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has promised the people Kabompo to revamp the defunct North Western Bee company if the his party formed government after August 11.

Addressing a rally at Kaunda Square, Mr Hichilema said the Kabompo-based company did not only produce honey products of international standard but also provided employment to the local people hence the need to reopen it.

He said Kabompo was not only reach in natural honey but also in other natural resources such as timber which if well enhanced could provide employment to the local people and revenue for the nation.

The UPND leader has also promised to the people in Kabompo to revamp the agriculture sector by giving farmers enough farming inputs so that they increased on their production which would in turn result in the reduction of mealie meal price.

He also said the UPND was the only visionary party which could deliver development to the expectation of the Zambian people.
“I am offering myself and the entire UPND to you the people of Kabompo so that we develop this country,” he said.

He also appealed to the electorates to vote for the UPND candidates at all levels so that when his party formed government after 11 August development could be fostered in the area.

And addressing a rally in Mufumbwe, Mr Hichilema promised to reinstate fired civil servants.

President Edgar Lungu says the Patriotic Front has delivered the various projects it promised the Zambian people in 2011.

Speaking when in Lusaka today when he commissioned the ZAF Hospital Out-Patient Department and Lusaka Base new Hangar, President Lungu says the Zambian people have taken stock of the PF’s achievements.

He says the ruling party is humbled to see that the Zambian people are able to see and point at the various projects the party had promised to deliver.

He points out that so far thirty nine district hospitals have been constructed of which five are already operational, adding that a total 266 health posts have equally been constructed of which 170 have so far been operationalised and are already serving communities.

President Lungu states that any nation that aspires to foster development and improve the lives of its citizens does so, on the basis of good roads, hospitals, schools, bridges airports and many others.

He says this why the PF Government is investing massively in infrastructure development.

President Lungu notes that infrastructure will not only transform the general outlook of the nation, but will also significantly contribute to the country’s socio economic outlook.

He expressed delight that the Zambia Air Force is moving in line with government’s national development agenda.

Meanwhile, ZAF Commander Lieutenant General Eric Chimese commended government for modernising the Zambia Air Force.

General Chimese said the facility will have a bed capacity of 220.

The first phase of the ZAF hospital cost 12.5 million kwacha.

Jean Kapata accused of sending PF cadres to attack MMD Campaign team

Soustaine Phiri explaining the attack this morning.

MMD aspiring Candidate for Mandevu Constituency Mary Phiri has accused past area MP Jean Kapata of sending people to attack her campaign team which was going round announcing the holding of a rally in the same area.

Ms Phiri said her campaign team was attacked on Friday by known PF members who were led by local government candidate and former councilor Christopher Sakafuswa , who has since been reported to Mandevu Police.

Ms Phiri wondered what sort of a mother and  grandmother Ms Kapata was as she is in the forefront of instigating violence when she should be emulating the President who has continued to preach peace everywhere he has gone to campaign.

She explained that Ms Kapata has instructed youths from her party to undress her when they meet her and that the former MP has also called her several times threatening to harm her when they meet.

“The past two days Ms Kapata has been holding meetings with the youths and all she has been telling them that if you find Mary Phiri beat her up, undress her and grab her material. She knows that she is not on the ground that is why she has resorted to violence.

“The President is preaching peace wherever he has been but it is so unfair that a woman, a mother who is suppose to campaign peacefully, a senior member of the PF should be telling people to attack me and that I should not campaign for the President,” Ms Phiri said.

She added ” telling youths to undress me is just dumb because when am undressed ,  she is also undressed, she is a woman, a mother and grandmother like me.”

Ms Phiri also called on President Lungu to be wary of some of the people he is working with because some of them are de-campaigning him as a person whose interested in seeing him return to State House would not be tearing his posters and T-shirts from people campaigning for him.

If  Shakafuswa undressed the women who were campaigning for the President ,  who will be affected by the act?

And Soustaine Phiri the driver of Ms Phiri accused Mr Shakafuswa and his group of stealing  a phone and K500 meant for fuel.

Phiri said it was unfortunate that people who are supposed to be protecting the name of the President were the ones attacking people.

He said he has reported Mr Sakafuswa who is also the son to Katuba PF candidate to the police for assault as well as for the items that have been stolen from him.

Internet data service provider Vodafone Zambia and Ecobank Zambia today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide financial business support worth $50,000 to 250 students at five Universities in Zambia.

Vodafone Zambia which recently launched its 4G data services in Zambia and as part of its strategy, has engaged 250 Brand Ambassadors from institutions of higher learning in Lusaka and the Copperbelt to promote the national youth empowerment agenda.

The institutions whose students will benefit from the scheme are University of Zambia (UNZA), Zambia Centre of Accountancy Services (ZCAS), University of Lusaka (UNILUS), Evelyn Hone College, NIPA in Lusaka as well as Copperbelt University (CBU) and Zambia Institute of Business Studies and Industrial Practice (ZIBSIP) on the Copperbelt.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Vodafone Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lars Stork said the objective of the scheme is to build talent among the young people and upskill them to become self-reliant entrepreneurs which is vital towards the growth of the economy.

The scheme will provide students with a credit facility of K2,000 that will be availed to each Brand Ambassador to purchase stock from Vodafone at a discounted rate for resale purposes.
By effecting this partnership with Ecobank Zambia, the Brand Ambassadors will be required to sell the connection and propagate the Vodafone brand, 4 G LTE products and services within and outside campus and act as liaison between Vodafone and the student community.

“Vodafone is passionate about youth empowerment and this initiative is a response to government’s call of providing employment to 10.5% of unemployed Zambian youth population. We believe that this scheme will help the youth to step up to the challenge of becoming self-reliant and find innovative means to earn a sustainable income which will not only support them whilst pursuing their studies but will also create a spiral effect of empowering other young people within their communities” said Mr. Stork.
