Sampa attacked over his “I’ll be full Cabinet Minister if Sata was alive ” remark

IT IS not about becoming Cabinet minister that makes one a potential leader of a country but the manner in which that individual interacts with the people or conducts himself or herself, says Gallant Youth in Zambia (GYZ) executive director Henry Mulenga.

Mr Mulenga said he was shocked by remarks by former Commerce deputy minister Miles Sampa alleging that if President Michael Sata was still alive today he would be a full Cabinet minister by now.

Mr Mulenga said Mr Sampa was not ready to be a leader because a leader should not be bitter but instead have tolerance to save the people.

‘‘Mr Sampa resigned (from Government) because he could not stand being where he was without realizing that the presidency is God-given and it is not a guarantee that if someone is Cabinet minister, that can ascend him to the presidency,” he said.

He said Mr Sampa’s bitterness would take him nowhere because he had no patience, saying that more was expected to be heard about him following the memorandum of understanding he signed with the opposition UPND.

Mr Mulenga advised Mr Sampa, who is leader of the deregistered Democratic Front, to accept what he was and stop being bitter as that would show the type of a leader he was.

“It is surprising to see Mr Sampa coming out with such bitterness; and his claims that had his late uncle Sata not died he would have been made Cabinet minister shows the type of a leader he is, forgetting that it is not becoming Cabinet minister that makes you the next President, but the manner in which you interact with people or conduct yourself.

‘‘We wonder how UPND will work with him and what portfolio he would be given in the unlikely circumstances that UPND formed government, because he appears to be an individual who is only interested in being in big positions and nothing else,” he said.

Mr Sampa said at a press briefing on Tuesday that he was a hard working MP who deserved to be a full Cabinet minister but that President Edgar Lungu could not see his potential and sacrifice for the ruling Patriotic Front party, adding that after the January 2015 elections he was ripe for a full Cabinet position having agreed to campaign for President Lungu.

Old habits die hard

Court hammer

A LUSAKA man who forgave his wife after she committed adultery with a church elder has decided to divorce his spouse citing continued promiscuity.
Danny Sikazwe, 37, of Garden House told the Matero Local Court that despite his love for his wife Brenda Chipuma, he wants his marriage annulled because Chipuma does not love him.
He was speaking before Justices Lewis Mumba and Pauline Newa in a case where Sikazwe sued Chipuma, 25, of Ten Miles for divorce.
Sikazwe said after he caught his wife and a church elder, only known as Muleya, of Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) church having sex on a reed mat, he forgave them both.
He said hoping that, that would change their marriage for the better, he was hurt to see that Chipuma began to neglect him and her house chores.
“I would draw water, boil it for her, bathe her, cook for her, wash her clothes and even take lunch for her at the market where she works,” he said.
Upon hearing this, the gallery burst into laughter while others clapped their hands in disbelief.
Sikazwe said his wife was in the habit of staying out late in bars, adding that when he asked her why she was behaving like that, she told him, ‘In our family, women don’t stay with one man. Even my parents are divorced.’
He said Chipuma also told him she could not live with a man who cannot afford to buy a car or even a house.
And in her statement, Chipuma said after the adultery case, Sikazwe, who she has been married to for 11 years and with whom she has two children does not trust her.
“I complained to my father-in-law who told me my husband was once mad and when he takes alcohol, madness returns to him. He told me that Sikazwe would kill me and that I should leave him for the sake of my children,” she said.
Passing judgment, Justice Newa granted divorce with no compensation and ordered the couple to share all household goods and property acquired together.

Tenure of MMD NEC members ends on 11th April 2016- Nakacinda

Raphael Nakacinda
Raphael Nakacinda

Suspended MMD national Spokesperson Raphael Nakacinda says all members of NEC members who will be claiming to still be holding on to their positions after 11th April 2016 will just be masquerading as their tenure of office ends on that day.

And governance expert McDonald Chipenzi says the blood being spilt due to political violence is on the heads of President Edgar Lungu and Police Inspector General Kakoma Kankanja as they are the only people with the powers to stop the scourge.

Speaking when the duo featured on a discussion program on Joy FM radio Mr Nakacinda said the only person with an outside chance to protest against holding of the convention is the party President Dr Nevers Mumba who was elected at an extra ordinary convention in 2012.

He explained that all the other NEC members including those who have been appointed to replace the various members who either were expelled or left the party will not have the mandate to hold on to any position in the party.

He further noted that even the position of the president is up for elections because the constitution of the party dictates that the party shall go to a convention every five years and that all positions are electable at the convention.

He also said the decision to try and defer the convention by NEC is illegal as it is only given powers to make decisions in between conventions which does not include deferring the convention adding that they are certain decisions which are a preserve of the convention and not NEC.

Mr Nakacinda who was a staunch supporter of Dr Mumba explained that he tried to advise the Politburo, an executive body within the party that MMD is not like others parties because the founders left a strong constitution which has to be followed but that there are some members who have been adamant and that proceeding in the way the party is going will only end up destroying the same values which the party was founded on.

Asked if he agrees with members who fought Dr Mumba such as Dora Siliya and others who have been expelled from the party, Mr Nakacinda said that his support for Dr Mumba was based on the constitutional backing that he was the elected President of the party with the mandate to run it up to the end of his term.

On accusations that he has been bought by the other faction headed by Lunte MP Felix Mutati, Mr Nakacinda said he is above being bought and that he does not want to be on the wrong side of the constitution, precedence or be among the people who will be responsible of mutilating the party’s values and principles.

He said he would rather be alone than in group of people advancing an agenda he does not believe in for political expedience and personal gains.

He said if party leaders can try to advance their personal interests when they are outside government how far would they go in protecting the interests if they were giving the mandate to run the country adding that if the party does not adhere to its own rules then they have no moral rights to offer themselves for service to the nation.

And speaking on the same platform governance expert who is also former FODEP Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi said there are two people with the powers to stop political violence in the country.

He said President Lungu has only been issuing rhetorics but that he has not put his foot down saying every time the President issues a statement condemning political violence the opposite happens as members of his party will be reported to have committed the same crimes.

Mr Chipenzi said the other person who is in a position to stop the scourge is the Inspector General of police who he said is in charge of the Zambia Police.

He said the blood being spilt due to political violence is on the heads of the two leaders as they have failed to control the scourge.

He called on the civil society not to relent in their call for peaceful campaigns and elections saying their job will only become harder as the election date approaches.

He also called on the media to avoid falling into what he called Kambwili phobia by ensuring that they help the public with accurate information.

Man’s Heart, Eyes, Manhood removed in horrific killing in Lilyana

Another dead body has been picked up in Lusaka’s Lilanda compound.

The victim, a middle aged man has had his chest cavity torn apart, his man hood and eyes removed and his body was found near Lilanda Catholic Parish.

Police Deputy Spokesman Rae Hamoonga in a statement could not confirm whether the body was intact or not.

“There is a dead boy that has been found there but then when officers rushed to the scene, members of the public started throwing stones at them and they turned back,” Mr Hamoonga stated.

“We are mobilising ourselves to go back there in full riot gear. So for now we can’t confirm whether the body is intact or has some of its parts missing.”

Mr Hamoonga has since appealed for calm in the area so that Police could access the body and commence investigations into the matter.

And a near riot broke out in Lusaka’s Matero area after word went round that another body has been found in the area.

So far six people have suffered the fate of the gruesome murders.

Last week, the discovery of four bodies in George Compound sent shock waves across the city especially that private parts were removed.

Musicians challenge Times of Zambia to name the musicians involved in ritual killings

16

Zambia Association of Musicians, president, Njoya Tembo and other artists, take a group photo.
The Zambia Association of Musicians has challenged the Sunday Times of Zambia to name the musicians said to be connected to the ritual murders of four people in George compound.

Association President Njoya Tembo said the rule of law says, “Everyone is innocent until proven guilty”.

Mr Tembo said Times of Zambia, being a national publication with high credibility and having been in business for a long time, should be professional and therefore present facts.
“Unfortunately we find this particular story to lack clarity, leaving us in suspense, and that is our challenge,” he said.

He added, “Online media publications have little or no credibility as most of their stories have been malicious, especially when dealing with musicians – therefore, we have reservations.”

Mr Tembo said there are a number of musicians’ names on social media.

“As we got the news and heard that these musicians were “on the run”, we called them and all of them answered their phones and as usual, they were busy either in the studio, coming from a performance or (one of them was) at home with family,” he said.

“We feel that some evidence in form of a picture or video would be of help, especially since we are in the era of smart phones. It would also help to name which police station(s) has a record of holding the musicians. If the above information is provided and it is proven that indeed the musicians were connected, ZAM would be the first to condemn the musicians.”

He said, “We however condemn the brutal killings and pray for God’s grace to abound with the affected families as we hope that Police would conclude with their investigations soon. We realise that the blanket statement made and the withholding of the 5 artists’ names continues to fuel speculations as many more names continue coming up. This has potential to put at risk the names being suggested and can poison the little strides our music industry has attained so far.”

Mr Tembo said the Association believes that musicians are noble professionals just like lawyers, teachers, soccer players and can greatly succeed with passion and hard work applied, notwithstanding the existence of a few bad eggs.

“And the names on social media have already shown how well they have been doing for themselves. We therefore question the statement “…. rituals were being aimed for fame…” as the mentioned people have already attained fame and their works speak for themselves.”
He has since urged citizens to support the industry and patiently wait for proof to be given (if at all it is there), and the law to take its course – if this will get to that point.

I am castrated, Chanda Chimba reveals details of living with prostate cancer

Chanda Chimba III, the producer of the infamous television documentary, dubbed “Stand up Zambia”

Journalist Chamba Chimba II has revealed that doctors had to castrate him as part of treatment for his advanced prostate cancer he was diagnosed with in 2014.

Mr Chimba who is famed for his controversial television documentary Stand up for Zambia disclosed that since he is medically castrated, he is not able to produce sperms but that he is still able to have normal sex.

He said as a castrated man, he is now having what is known as dry sex.

Mr Chimba was is now the founding President of the newly registered Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Zambia was speaking this morning when he featured on the Hot Seat radio programme on Hot FM.

“You know sex is on the mind, so I am able to have sex but it is just that I can’t produce sperms because the cells that produce the sperms cannot multiply but I am able to have sex normally. I have dry orgasm and I enjoy sex as vigorously as I can. Sex is in the mind,” Mr Chimba said.

Mr Chimba also stated that reports that frequent masturbation causes prostate cancer in men in later years are mere myths.

He said most men above the age of 50 are living with prostate cancer in silence and dying silently.

Mr Chimba said the major challenge in fighting prostate cancer is the silence that most patients and families live with.

“The biggest scare is for most men is that they will be castrated but it shouldn’t be. You can maintain your normal function as a man moreover there are different risk categorisation of patients and that means that treatment approaches also differ,” he said.

He added, “Some patients may just have surgery especially for early diagnosis and those at intermediate stage while some may end up with radiation but they can still maintain their function. Castration is only for advanced cancer which has spread to other parts of the body like the case was with me but I thank God and the medical staff at the Cancer Diseases Hospital for the treatment, I am now feeling much better.”

He said, “the key challenge is about silence. When I was diagnosed I started talking about this and I vowed that I must live to tell the story and that is how we started the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Zambia because there has not been any organisation to openly talk about issues of prostate cancer. I appeal to families to talk about this. I sat down with my wife and to tell her about my situation and I also discussed the issue with my bigger family about what I was going through.”

Shepolopolo loses to Zimbabwe

4

Shepolopolo on Wednesday afternoon succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Zimbabwe in the final qualifying round match of the 2016 African Women Championship played at Rufaro Stadium in Harare.

Kudakwashe Basopo scored the lone goal in this first leg match as the Mighty Warriors condemned Albert Kachinga’s Zambia Senior Women’s National to their first loss in the qualifying campaign.

According to FAZ media, Basopo is alleged to have been in an offside position as she chipped the ball over Zambia goalkeeper Hazel Nali on 45 minutes.

This result has given Zimbabwe a slender advantage going into the second leg scheduled for Nkoloma Stadium this Sunday.

Zambia now need to score at least two goals without conceding to qualify for the Africa Women Cup of Nations final tournament to be hosted by Cameroon in November.

Shepolopolo are seeking only their second appearance at the competition.

Solwezi -Chingola Road forgotten?

And in avoiding potholes, some motorists are causing accidents. And in avoiding potholes, some motorists are causing accidents. But children from the villages on the Chingola-Solwezi road have resorted to patching up the road using mud, in exchange for money from the motorists as can be seen above

Traveling through the Solwezi – Chingola Road now has become a terrible option to those that have used the road recently.

With three major mines in Solwezi and Kalumbila Districts, one still wonders why the road still remains unattended to despite having three contractors on the same project.

Road Pave, China Geo and Buildcon are the three contractors trying out their muscles to make the road more useful than it is now. However it is disappointing to note that 4 years down the line after the project started, the developments taking place on the road are at a snails pace.

What is more shocking is that a journey to Solwezi from Chingola that took a maximum of 2hour 30 minutes now takes a maximum of 5 hours using public transport.

[pullquote]What is shocking is that despite Lucky Mulusa hailing from the Province, he has not taken advantage of his position to help speed up the works like he has done in other districts.[/pullquote]

It was under Steven Masumba, Nathaniel Mubukwanu, Dawson Kafwaya and now Danny Chingimbu as provincial Ministers, there is still nothing to write home about.

Despite the claims of the town being the New Copperbelt! There is nothing close to that as the actual Copperbelt that has massively benefited from government’s road projects.

The Mines in the two Districts are the largest Copper Producers in the country but still no one bothers to have the road improved to better standards.

“It is a death trap, driving through the road put me under serious fear as to whether I would be home alive or not, the road is too bumpy” one of the travelers said.

“Its the issue of commitment, the Kitwe-Ndola dual carriage way and Kitwe-Chingola dual carriage way, how long have they taken? You can still see progress within 2 years, but for Solwezi after four years, the only difference is creation of detour roads and drainages and what is that!” He added.

Economic Activities in Solwezi have been delayed due to the slow pace at which the contractors are working on the road.

Politicizing the contraction of the Solwezi-Chingola Road will be the worst thing government would be making as the current situation puts the ruling party at a risk of losing votes.

Lucky Mulusa the former Solwezi Central Member of Parliament protested in 2012 by taking a walk from Chingola to Solwezi accompanied by Former Transport and Communications Minister Sarah Sayifwanda due to the poor state of the road.

However, what is shocking is that despite Mulusa hailing from the Province, he has not taken advantage of his position to help speed up the works like he has done in other districts.

Government needs to urgently wake up and sort the Solwezi Chingola Road to maximize economic benefits to the national treasury.

PF reaction to HH’s claims on Economic Management of Zambia

57

Hakainde Hichilema
Hakainde Hichilema

By Paul Moonga PF member of Central Committee

The story in the Post Newspaper quoting United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema on the status of the economy is another example of a desperate man seeking desperate attempts to cheat Zambians out of their votes.

Mr Hichilema attempted to explain the measures UPND will use to fix the economy if he wins power but as usual, he stayed away from explaining exactly how he hopes to evade the effects of falling world economies on a country like Zambia and how that will be addressed.

Clearly, Mr Hichilema wants to downgrade the status of Zambians by insinuating that they can buy into his cheap lies that he is a bearer of a formula that will fix the economy. He is aware that World leaders including other African Presidents have tried without success to escape the challenges that have downgraded the economic status of the world and by extension, Zambia.

Among the challenges include the falling copper prices on the London Metal Exchange (LME), and the resultant rising costs of food the world-over.

As PF, we will not take kindly to insinuations that President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is doing nothing to address the economic problems besetting our country when a myriad of measures and efforts already in public for all to see.

Mr Hichilema knows too well that just last week special assistant to the President Mr Amos Chanda issued a statement on Mopani Copper Mines opening a new project that will create a huge number of jobs for the youths on the Copperbelt.

This on its own is evidence that President Lungu is engaging players in the economy in an effort to address the economic challenges.

Besides that, there have been efforts to promote youth empowerment funds, promote agriculture which made Zambia record the highest amount of grain in the region last year.

We are very surprised that while the Southern African Development Community (SADC) applauded Zambia for its good performance in agriculture at the recent SADC Heads of State and Government summit, Mr Hichilema wants to play naive. PF will not allow him to continue propelling politics of lies.

We are aware that Mr Hichilema will go to greater lengths to select information for public consumption using deception like he has done in this instance but we stand ready to challenge him.

Zambians are aware that President Lungu has done his best to deal with the economic slump going by the recent meeting he held with business executives in Chipata, among other efforts. As such, it is unbelievable that Mr Hichilema can stand up today and claim that President Lungu is doing nothing about the economy.

As a party, we believe that Mr Hichilema is merely an expired political project that has reached its dead end and politically impotent. With him at the helm, UPND has seen its fortunes decline since the death of UPND founder president Anderson Mazoka.

I must make mention that we are not concerned about his tantrums especially that Zambians are seeing through his failed political machinations. Mr Hichilema must know that he is a political reject who will be sent into political retirement come August 2016 when Zambians will vote for President Lungu.

In our view, Mr Hichilema’s statement in the Post Newspapers of today, Thursday, April 6, 2016 is purely a transcript of what President Lungu is already doing to stem further economic decline in our country.

In that statement, the UPND leader talked about diversification, promotion of small and medium businessman and confidence-building which are already on the ladder of President Lungu’s government. As such, we are appealing to the people of Zambia to ignore Mr Hichilema because his machinations and lies are expired and ready for the dust-bin.

Bowman Lusambo promises to change Kabushi constituency within 3 months

Nevers Mumba with Bowman Lusambo at the Stadium

Kabushi Parliamentary aspirant on the PF ticket Bowman Lusambo says he intends to change the face of Kabushi constituency within 3 months with the help of the private sector once elected.

Mr Lusambo said if elected as MP for the constituency he will use his connections to source funds from private partners who wants to see Kabushi develop and become the cleanest constituency in Copperbelt.

He said as an MP it will be his responsibility to lobby for funds to develop the area and that development should not only come from government but that there are also private partners who are willing to partner with government in ensuring that the lives of people are better.

He noted that some of the things that MPs are failing to do can be done even by MPs themselves if they had a heart to serve the people.

He called on political leaders to ensure that they help government in its quest to deliver development by coming up with initiatives that can supplement its efforts.

And Mr Lusambo said he left MMD on principal and that he has chosen to support PF because of the leadership qualities of President Lungu.

He said Mr Lungu has shown that he is able to embrace everyone and that he is implementing developmental projects which he needs to complete.

Mbulakulima is being mischievous-MMD

6

MMD National Secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima
MMD National Secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima
Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Acting Party Spokesperson Reverend Reuben Sambo has advised suspended MMD National Secretary to be better organized and structured in the manner he is making statements on important party issues to avoid misleading the public. He said Mr. Mbulakulima has been an experienced and very senior member of the party and could have found a better way of finding out the information he wanted rather than choose a Mansa hotel, far away from Lusaka where the information is, to announce that he had written a letter to National Treasurer Elizabeth Chitika demanding her to account for all party monies allegedly because there has been reckless and extravagant expenditure by some senior officers.

Responding to a statement issued by Mr. Mbulakulima and carried in the Daily nation Newspaper of 4th April, 2016, Reverend Sambo said the impression created in the statement was mischievous because the letter in question, dated 25th January, 2016, was a regular and normal internal memo to the National Treasurer for her to give a report after the two Copperbelt and one Eastern Province mobilization tours. On such occasions funds are in the care of the National Treasurer for safe keeping and accountability.

In the particular case referred to, Mr Mbulakulima had not travelled to the Copperbelt and Eastern Province and we believed he was merely seeking clarification and not make it an agenda item at a dubious ‘mobilization tour’ at a hotel in Mansa. We believe Mr. Mbulakulima may have some anxieties about his Luapula Milenge seat and therefore deliberately chose Mansa as the venue for the strange speech.

Reconciliation and accounting of party funds after any party program is a regular undertaking by Mrs Chitika as part of her duties as clearly stated in the Party Constitution. These include inter alia, receipting and immediate banking of all party funds received, disbursements and reconciliation of all monies used on party programs, keeping and maintaining books of accounts, vouchers, financial documents, the power to inspect the Party bank accounts and books and report findings thereof to the National Executive Committee not to the National Secretary as Mr. Mbulakulima was.

The party is therefore very concerned by the impression created in the article attributed to Mr. Mbulakulima suggesting that he was asking her to account for all party monies received by the party which is misleading and deliberately intended to create an impression that there was questionable use of funds in the MMD generally.

The party is very disappointed that Mr. Mbulakulima who was National Treasurer before he became National Secretary and knew exactly how stringent handling of party funds is in the MMD, could issue such an irresponsible, malicious and deliberately misleading statement. Mr. Mbulakulima is well aware that in the MMD the National Treasurer does not generate any party programs and is simply a custodian of party funds and facilitator of party programs mooted by the National Secretary in consultation with the party president and the NEC.

It may be of interest to those who may wish to know that in the entire life of the MMD there has never been a period when funds have been handled as transparently and as prudently as is the case since Dr. Nevers Mumba took office. It is worth noting that this has been an issue with many members who have left the party who had been used to reckless access to party funds anyhow for flimsy reasons.

Reverend Sambo said the hallmark of Dr. Mumba’s leadership has been transparency in the handling of party funds and hands over any money he raises for the party immediately upon return. He said anyone could challenge him if there were any former National Secretaries in MMD who had any opportunity to know how funds were raised, used, how cars, party regalia etc were bought. This was always a tightly kept secret.

Reverend Sambo has asked all those questioning Dr. Mumba’s integrity in handling funds why nobody in MMD raised a finger to assist in paying the K400 million (un-rebased) penalty to the Registrar of Societies when the party was slapped with imminent de-registration in 2013 and yet Dr. Mumba managed to settle this money personally within days of the deadline and has never asked for a refund from the party. He said Dr. Mumba does not receive any allowance or salary from the MMD but instead is the chief funder of the party.

He personally funds all his foreign trips to source for funds for the party and has never asked for assistance from the party whatsoever.

The party has drawn the conclusion that this group of Mutati, Mbulakulima and others have reached a dead-end in trying to find fault with Dr. Mumba’s leadership and are now bent on being malicious to alienate Dr. Mumba from his supporters and funders.

As a party, we would like to challenge Mr. Mbulakulima to instead disclose the source and expenditure of party funds they are using on their alleged ‘MMD nation-wide mobilization’ with expelled former Lunte MP Felix Mutati. Why are they using former president Mr. Rupiah Banda’s regalia? Is it fair to conclude that perhaps he is the founder of their programs? Can we conclude that he is in fact the funder of the destabilization in the MMD?

If so, Mr. Mbulakulima and his colleagues need to offer a reasonable and plausible explanation since they are going in the name of the MMD and supposedly using MMD funds. If mishandled, this has potential to result in serious implications on Mr. Banda in light of the Supreme Court ruling of 18 November 2014.

Canisius Banda is financially stable and does not need a bailout-UPND

UPND vice president Dr Canisius Banda
UPND vice president Dr Canisius Banda

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has scoffed at a statement by the Patriotic Front (PF) suggesting that it’s vice-president for political affairs Canisius Banda is in need of a financial bailout.

UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said in an interview yesterday that Dr Banda was financially stable as evidenced by the recent migration into his ‘own house’.

Dr Banda was evicted from a rented house in Lusaka’s Presidential Housing Initiative (PHI) area last week on grounds that he owed the landlord undisclosed amounts of money.

PF member of the central committee Paul Moonga wondered why UPND president Hakainde Hichilema could not come to the aid of Dr Banda following his eviction.

But Mr Kakoma said Dr Banda was on record as having cleared the air on the ‘purported’ eviction, saying the opposition leader had shifted into an abode of his own.

“Dr Banda has already issued a statement on that matter. Did he say he needs any financial bailout? He moved into his own house, he was not evicted, that’s what he said,” Mr Kakoma said.

Dr Banda is also on record accusing the PF of trying to woo him by offering him accommodation and a new vehicle.

This is under the United States (US)-funded Lusaka Water Supply, Sanitation and Drainage Project (LWSSD).

US Ambassador to Zambia Eric Schultz said the works were a culmination of the hard work realised through a strong partnership between the US and the Zambian governments.

Mr Schultz said the works were intended to expand access to water and improve the reliability of water supply, sanitation and drainage services in Lusaka.

He was speaking yesterday during the ground-breaking ceremony for works on the Bombay drainage in Lusaka’s Garden Township.

“What we are launching today will focus on increasing the capacity of the Bombay drainage in order to safely manage the excess rain water flow and protect Mazyopa Township from improved drainage initiatives upstream,” Mr Schultz said.

He said the drainage being constructed would safeguard the community’s health as it would help diminish rubbish build-up and reduce standing water.

Local Government and Housing Minister Stephen Kampyongo commended the US government for the $355 million grant to the Zambian Government to support the implementation of the LWSSD.
Mr Kampyongo said the LWSSD was aimed at expanding access to improve the reliability of water supply and sanitation in communities.

“On behalf of Government, I want to reassure the expectant residents and the American government that we will continue to provide all the necessary support required to implement the project on time,” he said.

Mr Kampyongo urged the Lusaka City Council to ensure that the drainage infrastructure was maintained and protected.

He also urged Lusaka residents to desist from disposing of litter in the drainage as they were direct beneficiaries of the project.
