PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has said Government will not be forced to re-open the University of Zambia (UNZA) and the Copperbelt University (CBU) until students demonstrate maturity.

Mr Lungu said here last evening that the behaviour of students at the two institutions lately had been unacceptable and a source of concern for everyone.

He said this when he addressed Zambians based in Rome at the residence of Zambia’s Ambassador to Italy, Gertrude Mwape.

The President, who was accompanied by First Lady Esther Lungu, Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba, Zambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Muyeba Chikonde, and other Government officials, was responding to a question on the Public Order Act.

He said the Act was necessary for the maintenance of order in the country, and appealed for views to modify it if there were any concerns in its enforcement.

“This is a good piece of legislation and we should all find better ways of enforcing it. The police should not be afraid of doing the right thing.

“If we didn’t have this law, people would be behaving in ways that are not good for the country. Students would be demonstrating and causing anarchy at will,” Mr Lungu said.

On concerns about the energy crisis which has resulted from the current drought, he said his administration was considering alternative sources of energy.

He said the Government was eager to improve the lives of people, especially women in rural areas who were the most affected by the crises arising from the effects of climate change.

Mr Lungu said he did not want to blame anyone for Zambia’s economic hiccups, but to seek ways to remedy the situation.

He said measures had been put in place to better maintain the Kariba Dam, adding that the Government was also grappling with ways to come up with cost-reflective tariffs.

“But we will not wean our people from the subsidised rates overnight; we will embrace a gradual process,” he said.

In response to Justin Ndhlovu who expressed concern over high unemployment in Zambia, particularly among the youth, President Lungu said the Government was determined to create quality jobs for all the citizens.

He said the key priority for the Government was to attract progressive investors who would help broaden the employment platform.

“Our resolve, however, is to encourage skills training which will result in sustainable jobs. Under my leadership, I will ensure that the diversification programme is carried out successfully,” he said.

Chairperson of the Zambian community in Italy, Kennedy Katongo praised the President for maintaining peace and steering massive development projects in the country.

Father Katongo said Zambians in the diaspora were excited with the newly-signed Constitution which had provided for dual citizenship as it would stimulate investments from citizens living abroad.

He urged Mr Lungu to promote political dialogue and ensure there was no violence before and after the August 2016 general elections.

Fr Katongo called on the Government to help Zambians in Italy in the various challenges they face such as in the renewal of resident permits and the marginalisation that stemmed from the migrant crisis across Europe.

Musokotwane refuses to work with PF

Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) Liuwa Member of Parliament Situmbeko Musokotwane has rubbished reports that he is in support of an MMD alliance with the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) ahead of this year’s elections.

Dr. Musokotwane says he cannot support an alliance with party that has failed to address the concerns of the Zambian people.

He says the PF government has failed to respect human rights and the rule of law, among other things.

Dr. Musokotwane adds that it would be ridiculous for him to convince the Zambian people to vote for the PF when the party contributed to the downfall of the MMD.

The former Finance has reminded MMD members of Parliament supporting the idea of an alliance with the PF to remember how the ruling party attempted to unregister the former ruling party and accused them of dishonest when their seats were petitioned after the 2011 elections.

Meanwhile, Political Scientist Alex Ng’oma has cautioned the ruling Patriotic Front that it runs the risk of performing poorly in the August elections should it go into an alliance with the MMD with its current wrangles.

He says the MMD is suffering from ‘factionalism’ which is affecting the party’s reorganization ahead of the general election.

Dr. Ng’oma has told QFM News that the PF ought to know that forming an alliance with a party that is entangled in differences is risky, as it might affect the performance of the ruling party during elections.

He states that it is also important for the MMD to resolve their wrangles as this is weakening the former ruling party even more.

Dr. Ng’oma says the emerging confusion in the MMD where some MMD Members of Parliament are demanding for a convention should be addressed cautiously.

PF not in support of people declaring themselves as parliamentary aspiring candidates-Kapata

Ruling PF elections chairperson Jean Kapata says the premature campaigns that Kabwata parliamentary aspiring candidate Clement Tembo is undertaking using the PF regalia in the area do not have the blessings of her party, reports Pan African Radio Journalist Hermit Hachilonde.

Ms. Kapata who is also Mandevu Member of Parliament told Pan African radio in an exclusive telephone interview that no one from the PF has sanctioned Mr Tembo to start going round the constituency campaigning under the guise of introducing himself as a PF aspiring candidate.

She says it is against the PF regulations for an individual to declare oneself as the party’s area parliamentary candidate before being subjected to laid down procedures and scrutiny.

Ms. Kapata explains that the PF is an organisation that does not conduct its business without following the due processes and rules that govern it.

She has therefore with immediate effect directed Mr Tembo to desist from conducting premature campaigns in the name of the PF to avoid misleading the public that his candidature has been endorsed by the governing party failure to which they will conclude that he is an overzealous and adamant person who cannot be entrusted with leadership at any level.

“He doesn’t have the blessings of the party and for me if he continues we will not accept his application letter” Jean Kapata said

The mandevu lawmaker adds that even purported PF regalia his supporters and foot soldiers have been donning are sourced by Mr Tembo using his resources as an individual.

“Because the Chitenge material was being sold by an Indian in an Indian shop and anybody would walk in and buy, but I think he is too adamant and I think that is not the way to go” Jean Kapata said

Meanwhile Kabwata ward six councilor Cassius Mbalazi has advised against jumping the ship in his political career by contesting at local government level as a ward councillor before he thinks of contesting as an MP if he means well for the community he claims he wishes to serve.

Mr Mbalazi further stated that overrating oneself is a bad trait in leadership and always works against such individuals.

“If he is a genuine member of the Patriotic Front and he means well for the party, I would like him to respect party organs and all Senior party members, Honourable Lubinda is a very Senior party member and minister for that matter, if he has been hired to frustrate the MP, we will meet him on the ground because us councilors we are not going to accept to work with him, because there is a lot of immaturity in him and our efforts cannot be guided by such people, therefore when you look at the claims that he want to work for the community, it does not mean that when you clear garbage and build one pit latrine then I have got leadership qualities, if he want to work for the community let him become a councilor first” Cassius Mbalazi said

Closure of UNZA and CBU was inevitable under Circumstances of Anarchy

UNZA students are currently mobilizing at monk square

By Kennedy Kamba, PF Lusaka Province Youth Chairman.

His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu and his administration value education from nursery, primary, secondary and tertiary levels because it is fully persuaded that only an educated population can play a critical role in realizing the aspirations for a better Zambia. This commitment has been demonstrated by PF Government’s investment in the educational sector, including the recruiting of teaching personnel and massive investment in educational infrastructure, countrywide.

The clear intention of President Lungu and his Government is for institutions of learning to have uninterrupted academic calendars. But in the same regard, the student community equally has a duty to ensure that they prioritize existing avenues with the parent Ministry as opposed to reducing their grievances, no matter how genuine, into the levels of anarchy the country witnessed at UNZA and CBU the past few days. Nowhere in the world is it acceptable that students should bear weapons because we all know that the end result is loss of life and any responsible Government should act to prevent that. It is also criminal for anyone, including students to disarm a law enforcement officer and Zambians of goodwill must condemn such lawlessness.

Zambia cannot glorify lawlessness under the pretext of pleasing students at the expense of law and order. Nowhere in the world is the scenario of protesting students grabbing weapons from law enforcement officers tolerated. This is an abuse of democracy that politically motivated students bearing state weapons should be celebrated. We are a country of laws. Not even in the United States of America (USA) can glorify weapon-bearing students and we know that Ambassador Eric Schultz agrees with this position considering that he has been quite quick to condemn perceived wrongs from one end.

The Police have a duty to maintain public order and there is no glory in students throwing stones and damaging private property such as vehicles of the same taxpayers who sponsor their education. In any civilized society, there is always room for negotiations and lines of communication between President Lungu’s administration and the student community have always been open.

President Lungu has met student leaders on several instances and we are shocked that students chose not to exploit his extended olive branch and open-door policy. Without the closure, the situation could have led to loss of lives and extensive damage to private property and this must reflect the values of their sponsors in UPND.

Lastly, we wish to warn the Opposition UPND to stop funding confusion in higher institutions of learning. While this is an election year and it is in the interest of the Opposition to make, among others, UNZA and CBU ungovernable, we appeal to the Church, Civil Society Organizations and Members of the general public to condemn this politically-sponsored anarchy.

Weapon-bearing students created a slippery slope that could have degenerated into total disorder and loss of life. Had any life been lost in any of these institutions, it is the same Opposition and their friends at the Post Newspaper that would have turned around to pile the blame on President Lungu and his administration. The general student body must therefore refuse to be used by selfish and desperate politicians.

The few students being funded by the Opposition to trigger confusion cannot hold UNZA and CBU at ransom and neither will they be allowed to blackmail Government. Those who committed criminal acts such as disarming police officers must face consequences for their actions. We repeat that without the closure, the situation could have led to loss of lives and extensive damage to private property and this must reflect the values of their sponsors in UPND. It is only in Zambia that students bearing weapons can still be alive today.

Some MMD MPs threaten to go to court over the holding of a convention

SOME MMD members of parliament have threatened to sue their president Dr Nevers Mumba if he continues to refuse to hold convention

The MPs said the decision by the MMD national executive committee (NEC) meeting on January 30, not to hold the convention is unconstitutional, selected members of parliament of the former ruling party have charged.

The MPs have demanded that the decision should be reversed forthwith failure to which, they would take legal action on the matter. Group spokesperson Prof Geoffrey Lungwangwa said the decision did not only disenfranchised many members of the party who would have wished to contest any position of their choice but had wantonly been disrespectful to the constitution of the party.

And MPs led by Lunte Member of Parliament Felix Mutati told journalists in a press statement that decision not to hold a convention this year was not only a violation of the party constitution but that of the republican constitution which was founded on the values of democracy and constitutionalism.

Prof Lungwangwa said political parties were expected to adhere to the values stated in the constitution and acting to the contrary was a violation of the republican constitution.

He said the MMD constitution in Article 9 (a) stated that a member of the party had a right to demand the fulfilment of what was enshrined in the constitution.

“We therefore dissociate ourselves with the decision taken by NEC not to hold the party convention this year. We see this as unconstitutional and therefore illegal,” he said.

Prof Lungwangwa said the MMD members of Parliament were of the view that the current leadership of the party was deeply riddled in unconstitutional handling of the affairs of the former ruling party.

He warned that if left unchecked and uncorrected it would lead to the demise of the MMD.

“We therefore call upon all members of the party to unanimously demand for the convening of the party convention before April 2016,

“ This is the constitutional right of all the members of the party as enshrined in the republican constitution which states that ‘A political party shall promote and practice democracy through, regular, free and fair election within the party,’ article 60 (2) (d) ” Prof Lungwangwa said.

He said regular elections in the case of the MMD as set out in its constitution meant party convention every five years including elections for elections to vacant positions.

“This is the benchmark of the MMD intra party democracy which unfortunately Dr Nevers Mumba has deliberately decided to destroy as President of MMD,” he said.

GOVERNMENT has set up a committee to deal with the smuggling of mealie-meal into Malawi and Mozambique.

Eastern Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo said yesterday that the committee which was set up in consultation with provincial minister Malozo Sichone was monitoring super markets and other mealie-meal retail shops.

He said that Government was fully aware of the trend where mealie-meal is being exported to neighbouring countries in the region illegally.

Mr Kasolo observed that exporting mealie-meal was a new way smugglers were using to take Zambian maize out of the country.

He explained that following Government’s embargo on maize exportation, people have now turned to mealie meal.

Mr Kasolo has warned that anyone who would be found smuggling mealie-meal outside the country will be arrested.

Recently, people have been calling on government to put in place measures that would end smuggling of mealie-meal.

YALI asks Government and co-operating partners to help the ECZ meet its financial needs

ECZ
THE Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has called upon Government and Zambia’s Co-operating Partners to help provide adequate funding to the Electoral Commission of Zambia in order to enable the Commission discharge it’s mandate of conducting the 2016 general elections with utmost integrity and transparency.

We are saddened to note that the elections body is financially limping, just a few months before Zambia goes to the polls and we wish to emphasise that ECZ can only conduct free and fair elections if it is empowered to do so. This calls for Government and the Commission to identify urgent areas where the limited resources can be applied to maximum effect.

However, YALI notes that the Commission can also undertake certain actions to reduce its expenditure, such as a reduction in the hire of expensive 4 X 4 motor vehicles from private individuals or car hire companies at exorbitant prices, and move toward efficient and cost conscious hiring of transportation services. It is our view that this practice has become a method for unscrupulous business people, civil servants and some government officials who own 4 x 4s to make money from ECZ during elections.

In urging a reduction in ECZ expenditure, YALI would also like to put in on record, that we fully recognise that it is very costly to run a free and fair elections, and it is for that reason that we support the Commission’s upwards adjustment of nomination fees for persons wishing to contest elections at different levels.

We believe the Commission Chairperson, Judge Esau Chulu, adequately explained the reasons that necessitated the increase in nomination fees. However, YALI urges the Commission to practice greater stakeholder engagement in arriving at such important decisions.

We would urge our fellow citizens who may not agree with this increase in nomination fees, to give consideration to the the enormous cost of holding these elections. Secondly, it must be borne in mind that all candidates voluntarily choose to stand in these elections, after which, if they are successful, receive many benefits as Members of Parliament including a salary and hefty gratuity.

Under the recent Constitutional amendments, it must be noted that even those elected as councillors, will receive financial benefits paid from taxpayers money through the Consolidated Fund.

YALI believes, therefore, that It is only fair that these fees are hiked for those wanting to contest these and elections.

Meanwhile, YALI will engage with the Commission on pending issues regarding qualifications of Mayors and Council Chairperson including the election of councillors as we still feel there is need to carefully re-look at provisions of the law and the spirit with which the amended Constitution was framed to arrive at modalities on how local government elections will be conducted.

We will further engage with the Commission on the Presidential Running mate to avoid a situation where, if the Presidential Running Mate, appears on the ballot paper alongside the Presidential candidate, some voters may be confused as at how to proceed, which may then result in spoiled or rejected ballots which may, in turn, lead to controversy in interpreting the outcome.

We are confident that the ECZ, in executing its onerous duties, will be willing to listen to all its partners in order to deliver a free and fair election, a task which the Electoral Commission of Zambia has always accomplished with honour and distinction.

Aspiring MPs condemn rise in nomination fees

The upwards adjustment in nomination fees by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has been received with mixed feelings by aspiring parliamentary candidates.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia has increased the presidential nomination fee from K10, 000 to K75, 000 while the nomination fee for parliamentary candidates has been increased from K5, 000 to K10, 000.

Patrick Mungo who is eying the Munali seat feels this will bring sanity and seriousness among those aspiring to be the people’s representatives in various constituencies.

But Roy Hamalyang’ombe who is vying for the Moomba parliament seat in Monze feels the increase is an injury to democracy.

And Clement Tembo the aspiring candidate for Kabwata feels there is nothing wrong with the revised nomination fee as political parties may fund candidates who cannot afford to raise the money.

Meanwhile, Allan Sakala another aspirant for Munali constituency says as a youth, he feels the hike in the nomination fee will work against young people who do not have the financial muscle but are ready to offer service to the nation.

Edgar Keembe is Not Being Truthful – MMD Media Team

5
Edgar Keembe
Edgar Keembe

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Media Team would like to comment on the statement attributed to MMD Deputy National Chairman Edgar Keembe in which he challenged the statement by our National Secretary Mr Mwansa Mbulakulima that was issued after the MMD National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Saturday 30th January, 2016 where a wide range of issues were tabled including the proposed MMD-PF Alliance and holding of a Convention.

To start with, Mr. Keembe did not co-chair the NEC meeting as it was singularly chaired by MMD Party President Dr. Nevers Sekwila Mumba. The allegations made by Mr. Keembe in his statement which appeared on the Zambian Watchdog are completely false.

Minutes of the deliberations of the NEC meeting including resolutions and excerpts as released in the communiqué by Deputy National Secretary Ms Winnie Zaloumis, are all available at the Party Secretariat for scrutiny by any interested party. Any other statement outside our official press releases should be treated as personal and not representative of MMD party positions.

It is unfortunate that a senior Party member of Mr. Keembe’s stature could allow himself to be misguided and attempt to cast doubt on the credibility of the NEC meeting and cause confusion on a matter that is above board, transparent and straight forward.

It is at the same time not surprising, as Mr. Keembe has distanced himself from MMD Party affairs since the January 2015 elections in which he chose to campaign for the UPND. This is probably why he stands with those who are putting the party under pressure for an alliance with the United Party for National Development (UPND) instead of the Patriotic Front (PF).

Felix Mutati betrayed the MMD-Noah Mulenga

The Northern Province Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) Executive Committee has told outgoing Lunte Member of Parliament Felix Mutati to “go to hell” as the province no longer considers him an MMD Member of Parliament because of his blatant betrayal of the party.

Provincial Chairman Noah Mulenga said Mr Mutati betrayed the MMD during the January 2015 Presidential by-election when he openly campaigned for the United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Mr Hakainde Hichilema and also in the 2011 General Election when he decampaigned President Rupiah Banda in Lunte constituency. Mr Mulenga said that although Mr Mutati won Lunte, Mr Banda however lost to Mr Michael Sata in the same constituency. Mr Mulenga said that Mr Mutati clearly contributed to the devastating loss of Mr Banda in the presidential vote in that constituency.

“Mr. Mutati should understand that unlike the one-man dictatorial culture of the party where he has gone to [UPND], the MMD is governed by strong grassroots democratic practices strictly guided by the party Constitution not by power-hungry Members of Parliament. He said that in the MMD, aspiring candidates for parliamentary and local government seats are selected and recommended by the grassroots matched by their good standing in the party. So an MP is accountable to the structures and we are waiting for him if he has courage,” said Mr Mulenga.

Mr. Mulenga says the party in the province will not miss Mr. Mutati because he is a coward, double-tongued and a dangerous opportunist who will say one thing in daylight, but will be slippery and deceptive like a snake at night.

“We are very relieved that people are now seeing Mr. Mutati for who he really is. We have been telling the leadership of the party to be careful with Mr. Mutati but they wanted to be fair to him and said they were giving him the benefit of doubt. Mr Mutati was the shadow behind all the calls for a convention for a very long time. That convention has had only one agenda item which was to remove Nevers Mumba as President of MMD.”

“What we know is that Mr. Mutati, including his group who stood against Nevers Mumba, never recovered from the devastating loss they suffered at the hands of Nevers Mumba during the 2012 Convention when he won a landslide victory. From that time, Mutati and his group have harboured jealousy and hatred against an innocent man who happens to be one of the greatest leaders of our time and the best politician this country has ever had.

“Since that defeat, Mr. Mutati has been underground plotting how to get rid of Dr. Mumba. We can confirm that Mr. Mutati has made countless trips to Northern Province for a long time to try to mobilize and corrupt our party structures to agitate for the removal of Dr. Mumba as MMD president, but we have solidly stood behind our president. After corrupting so many people and his plan failing, Mr Mutati has been forced to overcome his cowardice and come out in the open instead of hiding behind the likes of Professor Lungwangwa and Bradford Machila.

“We know he is now frustrated and has lost a lot of money and is running out of time to deliver the MMD to UPND for an alliance as he promised them. He is hell-bent to ensure that the MMD is completely neutralized and its value destroyed to ensure that it is not a viable option as an alliance partner with any party. We in Bemba say, ‘twalafilila munsenga’. In other words, ‘If I can’t have the MMD, then no one will,’” said Mr. Mulenga.

“As Northern Province Chairman and a member of the MMD NEC, I was at the January 30th 2016 meeting and there was an overwhelming vote against holding a convention this year. Mr. Mutati had wanted to sneak in Professor Lungwangwa who is not a NEC member to try and present a petition for holding a convention but he was not even allowed in because he did not qualify to attend. When it is clear that everything has now failed, their only option is a futile court injunction,” said Mr. Mulenga.

The MMD Provincial Leadership has further warned anyone thinking of allowing Mr. Mutati in their ranks to constantly be on alert and to be very careful of Mr. Mutati as he is an unprincipled, power-hungry and over-ambitious politician.

PRESIDENT Lungu has assured Pope Francis that he will continue promoting dialogue among different political players as Zambia heads for tripartite elections.

The President told the Pope that he believes in peace and co-existence and that he will continue to promote dialogue with all political players.

President Lungu made the assurance during private talks with the Pope at the Vatican City yesterday.

Briefing the press at Hotel Westin Excelsior on the talks, President Lungu’s special assistant for press and public relations, Amos Chanda, said during the meeting, the Pope said Zambia is a beacon of peace.

“The President assured the Holy Father that as Zambia goes to elections this year, he is going to try as much as possible to promote dialogue among political parties,” Mr Chanda said.

And the Pope has appealed to President Lungu to promote dialogue and peace ahead of the elections.
Pope Francis said Zambia is known for holding peaceful elections and that he is looking forward to peaceful polls in August.

President Lungu has always called for peace and co-existence ahead of the August 11 tripartite elections.
Pope Francis wished Zambia peace before, during and after the tripartite elections and urged President Lungu to continue promoting dialogue among different sections of society.

Pope Francis also urged President Lungu to help resolve conflicts in Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mr Chanda said it is for this reason the Vatican regards Zambia as a credible mediator which can help the parties in Burundi and DRC to resolve their political differences peacefully.

“The Pope urged President Lungu that he is greatly concerned about the political violence in Burundi and appealed to President Lungu to intervene,” Mr Chanda said.

“The Pope said Zambia can be a credible mediator in the crises in Burundi and DR Congo.”

He said the Pope emphasised that there is need for President Lungu to ensure there are credible elections in DR Congo.

The two leaders also pledged to work together to mitigate the impact of climate change on Zambia and the entire southern Africa.

Pope Francis expressed concern about the possibility of crop failure in Zambia and the region because of poor rainfall, and called for closer collaboration.

President Lungu also held private talks with Vatican Secretary of State of His Holiness Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Miles Sampa is a traitor-Andrew Lubusha

THE ruling Patriotic Front (PF) in Eastern Province has described Matero Member of Parliament (MP) Miles Sampa as a traitor.

Eastern Province PF Chairperson Andrew Lubusha said when he addressed party members at Events hall in Chipata on Wednesday that Mr Sampa was given ministerial position by President Edgar Lungu which he resigned himself because of his selfish minds.

He said when he resigned from his deputy ministerial positions he told the nation that he would concentrate on party mobilisation adding that he would not leave PF.

Mr Lubusha wondered why the Matero MP who was entrusted with some responsibilities by President Lungu left the party which he claimed that he founded.

“You remember that Mr Miles Sampa despite having differences with President Lungu, the Head of State made him a deputy minister of commerce and part of the Central Committee,” he said.

He said he was shocked that Mr Sampa resigned from the ruling party.

He challenged those who were intending to join Mr Sampa that they should not do so because the Matero MP was not a trusted person.

And Chama District PF treasurer Edward Chipoka said PF should go ahead in forming an alliance with MMD.

Mr Chipoka who was flanked by his Chairperson Richard Munyenyembe said President Lungu had made a step in inviting the MMD to form an alliance ahead of the August 11th general elections.

He said the forthcoming elections needed partner with MMD in order to marshal votes.

Confusion continue to rock MMD as three Factions Emerge

31

THREE factions have emerged in the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) over whether the former ruling party should forge an alliance with the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) or the United Party for National Development (UPND).

One faction which is openly aligning itself to the opposition UPND does not want anything to do with the PF.

The third faction wants to oust MMD president Never Mumba because they believe he is arm-twisting President Edgar Lungu into an alliance on condition that he is appointed as a running mate.

But a national executive committee member Malama Sokoni rubbished the ‘running mate’ assertion because no talks had been held with the PF to discuss the nature of the alliance.

Earlier in the week, MMD national secretary Mwansa Mbulakulima announced that the former ruling party at its national executive meeting had resolved to accept President Lungu’s offer to form an alliance following the inclusion of the 50 percent plus 1 clause in the amended Constitution and mandated Dr Mumba to negotiate and report back the terms and conditions.

But embattled MMD national chairman Edgar Keembe, claimed that there was no resolution to form an alliance with the PF.

A statement by the MMD media team dismissed as false Mr Keembe’s assertions whom they accused of wanting the MMD to form an alliance with a different political party.

It was unfortunate they said that a senior member of the party such as Mr Keembe could allow himself to be misguided to attempt to cast doubt on the credibility of the NEC meeting and its resolutions.

The statement accused Mr Keembe of attempting to cause confusion in the MMD on a matter it said was above board, transparent and without blemish.

“To start with, Mr Keembe did not co-chair the NEC meeting as it was singularly chaired by MMD president Never Mumba. It is unfortunate that a senior party member of Mr Keembe’s stature could allow himself to be so misguided and attempt to cast doubt on the credibility of the NEC meeting and attempt to cause confusion on a matter that is above board and transparent,” the statement read in part.

Mr Keembe, however, insisted that he had co-chaired the NEC meeting at which the matter of forming an alliance with the PF was tabled and because of a number of issues that were raised it was decided that it was not appropriate to give an express response to President Lungu’s offer.

He said it was resolved that the MMD remained committed to engaging any other serious political party on grounds of sincerity, mutual respect and fairness.

Mr Keembe said it was his personal view that it was the PF that paralysed the MMD by unlawfully grabbing its vehicles soon after the 2011 general elections, adding that it was unimaginable for the former ruling party to forge an alliance with the ruling party.

“My belief and that of many other members opposed to working with the PF are based on a firm foundation that requires a big hammer to break. How can any normal and party-loving MMD member go to bed with the PF, the party that literally destroyed the MMD?

‘‘Those calling for an alliance with the PF can only be enemies of our party and are peddling personal interest. President Lungu has only sent an SMS to Dr Mumba and has given a condition that Dr Mumba should reconcile with former president Rupiah Banda,” Mr Keembe said.

He explained that it was the PF after winning the 2011 general elections that petitioned all the MMD parliamentary seats with the aim of obliterating the party.
