Zesco Managing Director Victor Mundende has urged workers at the power utility company to apply themselves with renewed zeal and dedication in the execution of their duties.Addressing workers during his inaugural speech at Zesco offices on Malambo Road in Lusaka on Friday, Mr Mundende urged workers not to work against each other but to work as a team.

He, however, noted that there was poor work culture and time keeping with lack of dedication to work by most employees.Mr Mundende also noted that some workers at the company’s head office were in the habit of shopping during working hours.

“Over the last couple of months, we have also noted with concern the lack of dedication and drive towards work by some of our employees. This has a direct bearing on Zesco’s service delivery to its esteemed customers. In the case of workers at head office, we have seen an increase in malingering ever since Levy Park Mall was opened, with some workers engaged in shopping activities during working hours. This has to stop,” he warned.

He said a confident workforce with high morale was key to increased productivity.

“In this regard, human resources are directed to ensure that the following are realized: That recognition and rewards are clearly and consistently tied to job performance and overall business results; That learning opportunities are provided for employees to excel at their current jobs but also to grow into new one; and lastly that HR programmes and policies should be consistent and fair for all employees,” he said.

Mr Mundende has also director human resource department to lift the general ban on overtime payment with immediate effect.

He further urged the company’s Human Resource department to step up training especially of junior officers.

“We need to embrace quality in every aspect of our business process, be it in construction or customer care. Our vision and target should be for Zesco to get ISO recognition, as a company that puts quality at the center of its activities. And I am glad that we have set up a SHEQ department that will spearhead this task,” he said.

He said as part of the company’s mandate to support the government development agenda, Zesco needed to accelerate electrification projects, particulary in rural areas to help Zambia attain its vision 2030 goals of poverty reduction, among other programmes.

“For us to succeed, we need to be focused and work hard. We need to put in our efforts at all levels. We should have the pride of serving our company and the nation through our sweat, aptitude and attidude. To achieve this, it calls for disciplined workforce. Our mission to be an effective service provider through a highly motivated team driven by passion for innovation and excellence should not just be words that are written on our brands but should resound in all of us as an energizer,” said Mr Mundende.

Doctors refer President Lungu for medical treatment abroad

The Medical Team attending to President Lungu, has explored options of correcting the narrowing of the oesophagus (food pipe)that led to the illness of the President on Sunday March, 8 2015.

Doctors have recommended that President Lungu undergoes a high-tech medical procedure which is currently unavailable in Zambia and therefore he has been referred for specialised treatment abroad. This is according to the second medical bulletin released by Special Assistant to the President Amos Chanda

President Lungu has a history Achalasia (the condition of the narrowing of the food pipe.) This condition was corrected 30 years ago at the University Teaching Hospital and appears to have recurred.A team of senior doctors comprising physicians, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists, reviewed these findings and recommended immediate correction of this condition. This statement has been authorized by Dr. Dorothy Kasonde and Dr. Dave Kishore on behalf the doctors attending to President Lungu.

What is Achalasia

Achalasia is a condition that affects the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the throat to the stomach. In individuals with achalasia, the esophagus does not work properly. Food may become trapped in it. This condition can be related to damage to nerves in the esophagus. It can also be caused by damage to the lower esophageal sphincter. The lower esophageal sphincter is a valve that closes off the esophagus from the stomach.

How Is Achalasia Treated?

Several types of treatment can be used to either temporarily reduce symptoms or permanently alter the function of the lower esophageal sphincter.

  1. The first line of treatment is often oral medications. Nitrates or calcium channel blockers can help to relax the sphincter so food can pass through it more easily. Doctors might also use Botox to relax the sphincter.
  2. To treat achalasia more permanently, doctors can either dilate the sphincter or alter it. Dilation is typically done by inserting a balloon into the esophagus and inflating it. This stretches out the sphincter and helps the esophagus function better. However, sometimes dilation tears the sphincter. If this happens, additional surgery to repair it may be needed.

Esophagomyotomy is a type of surgery used to help people with achalasia. Doctors use a large or small incision to access the sphincter and carefully alter it to allow better flow into the stomach. The great majority of esophagomyotomy procedures are successful.

What Can Be Expected in the Long Term?

Prognosis for this condition varies. Some people only have very mild symptoms. For others, treatment can be highly successful. Sometimes multiple treatments are needed to handle symptoms.

Unfortunately, if a dilation procedure doesn’t work the first time, surgery may be needed. Usually, the chance of success decreases with each successive dilation. Therefore, doctors will often seek alternatives if several dilations are not successful.

The success rate for esophagomyotomy is thought to be 80-90%. However, patients may develop some complications. These include:

  • issues related to tearing of the esophagus
  • acid reflux
  • respiratory conditions caused by food travelling up the esophagus and into the windpipe

The Zambia Medical Association, ZMA, has commended the handlers of President Edgar Lungu for their swift action when they advised the Head Of State to withdraw from the 2015 Women’s Day celebrations on suspicion that he could be going down with malaria.

Commenting on President Lungu’s impromptu departure from Independence stadium today, ZMA president Aaron Mujajati said State House demonstrated respect for the public when they publicly disclosed that the President sudden departure was on account of his illness.

“If he had just departed without any explanation, that would have fueled unnecessary speculation”, Dr. Mujajati said in a statement released in Lusaka today. The ZMA president said the swift action by State House medical team conveys the fact that no health issue should be taken lightly but instead be promptly investigated and dealt with quickly.

He further said State House should at some point soon issue a comprehensive statement on the matter for the information of the public who are the major stakehoders in the President’s health. The ZMA president said his organization is, through State House press secretary Amos Chanda, in touch with the President’s Medical Team who has assured us that “there’s nothing to worry about because the President is simply fatigued due to his busy schedule since taking over office and that traces of malaria parasites were detected.”

Dr. Mujajati said the unprecedented transparency exhibited by State House should be institutionalized so that subsequent administrations could handle the President’s health in a predictable fashion. The ZMA leader said his organization’s suggestion for the establishment of the office the Physician General should be the custodian of the institutions and protocols for the management of the President’s health.

Dr. Mujajati said the public announcement was even more timely especially that it was made at the time of celebrating Women’s Day “because women are the primary custodians of health.” The swift action by the President’s medical team should be a challenge to women who should not hesitate to take their children to health facilities should their be any indication that their health may be in danger.
