FDD President Edith Nawakwi
FDD President Edith Nawakwi

Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) president Edith Nawakwi has accused Ministers in the Patriotic Front Government of frustrating President Michael Sata’s vision to transform the country.

President Sata earlier this week scoffed at his minister for failing to explain to the Zambian people the achievements the PF government has scored since coming to power two years ago.

Ms Nawakwi observed that the Ministers’ poor handling of issues is frustrating the Head of State. She said the Ministers lack direction in delivering to the expectations of the majority Zambians.

Ms Nawakwi added that it is unfortunate that all the Ministers are failing to defend the president by explaining to the people issues affecting the nation.

And Ms. Nawakwi said the wrangles and violence that have characterized the Patriotic Front recently have exposed the ruling party to the Zambian people.

She said that the Patriotic Front should know that they have just de-campaigned themselves out of power and that there will be no need for the opposition to de-campaign them in 2016.

Miles Sampa gives 30-day ultimatum to mining companies to start giving business to local suppliers

TRADE, Commerce and Industry Deputy Minister Miles Sampa has given a 30-day ultimatum to mining companies on the Copperbelt to start directing a good volume of business to local suppliers and contractors.

Mr Sampa gave the ultimatum during a meeting with members of the Mine Suppliers and Contractors Association of Zambia (MSCAZ) and Kitwe District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KDCCI) in Kitwe yesterday.

Mr Sampa said it was Government’s desire to see local suppliers and contractors begin to benefits significantly from the country’s mining industry by way of them accessing business.

He said it was his considered view to push for legislation that would compel mining companies to sub-contract local suppliers and contractors should mining companies fail to oblige to Government’s demand of them.

“I am appealing to mining companies in the country and in particular Copperbelt to start giving contracts to locals for supply of goods and services. You have 30 days to see to it that this request is implemented and if not, I will be in the fore-front to legislate a law that will compel them to do so,” he said.

Mr Sampa said while Government was calling for increased investment, its interest was to have only credible investors capable of creating jobs for locals come into the country.

“My job is to enrich Zambians through trade and so my desire is to see mining companies start giving business to local suppliers and contractors because we need to have a win-win situation where investors benefit and we as Zambians also benefit,” Mr Sampa said.

The deputy minister warned suppliers and contractors to be wary of some of the strategies by mining companies aimed at weakening the local supply chain.

“You should harmonize yourselves and absorb all other smaller associations into one recognized association. Be careful also of impostors who pass as spokespersons for your associations but are there to create confusion,” he said.

FORMER Minister in the MMD administration, Newstead Zimba has once again sued his wife Naomi, seeking an interim injunction to restrain her from accessing three bank accounts at Finance bank among other things.

Mr Zimba a former Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, had in July this year sued his wife demanding for almost similar remedies but withdrew the matter for unknown reasons.

Mr Zimba has now accused Naomi of deserting their matrimonial home for five months including her own children.

He wants the Lusaka High Court to order her to account for all the monies she has been controlling in her personal account, company account and dollar account, all held at Finance Bank adding that the monies were realized from a family business known as Zambian Cosmetology Consultancy Limited and their house in Lusaka’s Woodlands Township.

Mr Zimba further wants Naomi to be restrained from controlling or collecting rentals from the property on number 41 Nalikwanda Road, Woodlands as well as not having access to the personal, the company account and the account of proceeds of the family business.

He also wants to the court to issue an order of preservation of motor vehicle, a Nissan registration number ABV 135 and their company property.

He said he got married to Naomi Mbewe under customary law and had lived as husband and wife for 20 years.

He said that in the course of their marriage and for purpose of transparency, he assigned Naomi who was a secretary at Finance Bank to be in charge of the financial and domestic affairs of the family.

“At one point, the plaintiff sold his house in Kitwe in 2006 and the money was deposited in the defendant’s foreign account,” the court documents read in part.

Mr Zimba said that even when he sold another house in Lusaka, the money was deposited into Naomi’s Kwacha account which money was used to purchase their Woodlands house.

He said that Naomi had been refusing him access to the three bank accounts and money realized from the house rentals alleging that every time he asked her about the money, she was hostile to him.

Tana -Minor adjustments needed for Zambia

11

Ex-Chipolopolo captain Elijah Tana says adjustments to the current Zambia squad are necessary following the team’s failure to reach the final stage of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Tana said he is against the idea of overhauling the entire Christopher Katongo led Chipolopolo squad.

He described Zambia’s failure in the World Cup campaign as sad.

“The failure by Zambia National soccer team to qualify to the 2014
World Cup was a sad moment,” Tana said.

“There is no need to change players in the national team as that would destroy the team but few adjustments would be necessary,” he said.

He, however, remained confident that in future Zambia will qualify for the World Cup.

“To everything there is a time and it definitely wasn’t the time for Zambia to go to the World Cup.”

The United Party for National Development (UPND) has accused Republican President Michael Sata and PF Kasama Central Member of Parliament, Geoffrey Mwamba, of sending cadres to attack UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema in Kasama yesterday.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka today, UPND Presidential Advisor, Douglas Siakalima says despite being attacked by some suspected PF cadres, the UPND entourage will still go back to Kasama and visit paramount Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba speaking people.

Mr. Siakalima says the party will not be intimidated by the methods President Sata and Mr Mwamba are allegedly using to lower and attack the UPND leader.

Mr. Siakalima has also called on the Zambia Police to be professional in their operations warning that they will pay for the misery they are causing on the opposition.

And UPND Southern Province Chairman Hilliard Makweembo has accused President Sata of resorting to harassing Mr. Hichilema because he is feeling the pressure the UPND is mounting on him.

Mr. Makweembo says there is no doubt that President Sata has become dictatorial and thrown away the confidence the Zambian people had put in him.

He says there is need for the president to allow democracy which was hard earned to flourish in the country.

A Public Policy Expert has noted the need for Republican President Michael Sata to provide serious policy direction as he opens the Third Session of the Eleventh National Assembly this Friday.

Dr Neo Simutanyi said there are so many issues that are not going well in the country hence the need for policy direction from the Head of State.

Dr. Simutanyi who is also Center for Policy Dialogue Executive Director said that it is sad that the last policy statement by the President lacked policy issues.

He said that it will be imperative for the President to help the citizenry understand whether the country is moving in the right direction.

Dr. Simutanyi added that it is unfortunate that there is still no clear policy guideline on devolution of power it being one of the core policy priorities of the PF government.

And Institute for Finance & Economics Zambia President, Caleb Fundanga says the Head of State should address the issues of high unemployment levels in the country an issue he noted has raised a lot of debate.

Dr. Fundanga who is also Former bank of Zambia Governor is optimistic that President Sata will present a general policy statement on the creation of jobs and new investments.

And Zambians for Empowerment and Development president Fred Mutesa says opposition political parties want to hear how the Head of State is going to guide the nation in creating a level political playing field for all political parties.

Dr Mutesa observes that the administration of the public order Act has been contentious as it is tilted in the favour of the ruling party.

PF cabinet is the most incompetent in Zambia’s history- Nevers Mumba

MMD president Dr Nevers Mumba speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka.
FILE: MMD president Dr Nevers Mumba

Opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president Nevers Mumba has expressed concern over the quality of Ministers in President Michael Sata’s Cabinet.

Dr. Mumba says the Head of State should find people with qualities who can deliver to the expectations of the Zambian people.

He says it is not right for President Sata to appoint Ministers because they campaigned for him.

He says states that the Patriotic Front PF government is the first ever government in Zambia%u2019s history filled with incompetent Ministers.

Dr Mumba says it is unfortunate and embarrassing to watch and listen to how some of the PF Ministers articulate issues affecting the citizenry.

He says there are many Zambians and PF officials who are competent enough to be Ministers than some Ministers currently in government.

Dr. Mumba has since called on the Head of State to consider making right decisions when appointing Cabinet Ministers them being representatives of the citizenry.

Namugala will remain expelled until she openly admits her wrongs- Nevers Mumba

Catherine Namugala

MMD president Nevers Mumba says Mafinga Member of Parliament Catherine Namugala will remain expelled from the party not until she openly admits her wrongs.

Ms Namugla played a pivotal role in the MMD victory in the recent Thendere ward by-election in Mafinga where she campaigned hard for the ruling party.

Dr Mumba says it is imperative for Ms Namugala to admit her wrongs and ask for forgiveness before being considered for admission back into the party fold.

He says calls for Ms Namugala to be re-integrated in the party will not be considered until she is repentant.

Dr. Mumba says if the MMD National Executive Committee is approached and Ms Namugala is repentant, the party will consider lifting her expulsion.

In January, MMD president Nevers Mumba expelled Namugala from the party for gross misconduct.

But Namugala rubbished her expulsion from MMD, saying it was illegal. She has since challenged her expulsion from the party in the courts of law.
