Instruction by President Sata to arrest and expel UNZA students very saddening YALI

18

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) is deeply saddened by instruction of the President Sata to the police to have demonstrating young people arrested for conducting peaceful demonstration over the failure by the PF to clearly provide leadership to challenges the poor majority face as a result of the his governments failure to protect them from hardships that will result from removal of subsidies on fuel and staple food such as mealie meal and maize.

The people have spoken against the stupid by-elections being induced by the ruling PF and his uncoordinated style of leadership. The arrest of some students from UNZA is an act of cowardice and shows President Sata is not able to listen to the masses, especially the Youth, that sent him to State House. The instruction to the police to arrest peaceful young persons demonstrating against his poor policies is dictatorship of the worst kind and ought to be roundly condemned by all well meaning Zambians.

YALI is not intimidated and will not be swayed from speaking on behalf of our fellow young people and we have since instructed lawyers to ensure arrested young leaders get justice. Government’s unbecoming behavior of trying to intimidate and getting everyone to submit to tyrannical rule will not work and we would like to ask to stop President Sata from living in his own separate world that can be compared to an era where KK turned the police into his Gestapo to stop citizens from exercising their fundamental political rights. YALI demands the immediate release of innocent young people whose arrest is unlawful. Since when did demonstrating peacefully become a crime? Which law is he applying for arresting young people who are demonstrating as this is a fundamental aspect of any democracy?

YALI would like to remind the president that we are not under any state of emergency and the people of this country have a right to expression guaranteed under the constitution which he swore to uphold. Why is the president so afraid to meet and talk to his people who are merely seeking answers to the so many pressing national matters?

Fighton slams ref Jani Sikazwe after Nchanga loss

7

Coach Fighton Simukonda has blamed Kapiri-Mposhi FIFA referee Jani Sikazwe for Nchanga Rangers’ 1-0 loss to Nkana in Saturday’s home FAZ Super Division Week Nine match in Chingola.

Sikazwe sent off Rangers defender McDuff Chungu just after the break before dismissing Nkana’s goal scorer Kelvin Mubanga a minute before the final whistle.

Simukonda said he was disappointed with the way Sikazwe handled the match.

“I am very disappointed and furious. We played well but it’s because of the so called much officials,” he lamented.

Sikazwe further produced more than 10 yellow cards.

“He (Sikazwe) didn’t know what he was doing maybe the game was too big for him. I don’t know what we have done to referees,” Simukonda added.

Mubanga inked the solitary goal in the 69th minute as league leaders Nkana cruised to a rare win at Nchanga Stadium to increase their tally to 22 points.

Nchanga lie 4th on the table with 14 points.

Their next match is against Zanaco away in Lusaka this Saturday.

According to the site travel site, Fuel prices differ considerably across countries. The prices of fuel in some of the petrol producing states are less than a few dollar/euro cents for the liter. In contrast, in some European countries, a liter of gas cost more than 2 dollars. Prices also change over time. However, price movements are similar across countries. They either increase or decrease everywhere.

The data is drawn from a variety of sources including official government materials, oil companies, online resources specializing in gas prices, and others. These sources provide reliable information about fuel prices in a large number of countries.

Opposition National Revolution Party (NRP) president Cosmo Mumba says he will next launch his black card campaign against outspoken Catholic clergy cum politician Father Frank Bwalya.

Dr. Mumba says his campaign will also target opposition MMD leader Nevers Mumba to make the duo to return to the pulpit because politics is a wrong for a for them.

He says he will be wearing black attire to symbolize that he was against the two former clergymen who have turned politicians.

Dr. Mumba accused father Bwalya and Dr. Mumba of abandoning the church in preference for politics for selfish gains.

He was speaking in Chongwe district yesterday shortly after republican President Michael Sata laid a foundation stone for the construction of Zambia’s fourth public University, Palabana.

“Next week, l will be putting on black clothes in protest and launch against Fr. Bwalya and Dr. Mumba because they should resign from politics and return to the pulpit where they belong,” the vividly annoyed Mumba said.

The outspoken clergyman, Father Bwalya put up his famous Red Card during the pre – 2011 September Tripartite elections against the then ruling MMD.

And Dr. Mumba has charged that Fr. Bwalya is a Tonga by tribe who originates from Pemba district in Southern province where his biological father hails from.

He said Fr. Bwalya is using her mothers’ name and publicly called him ‘Habwalya’ instead of duping the Zambian people that he was a Bemba by tribe when infact he is not.

He challenged Fr. Bwaya to take him to court over his statement if he refutes that he was a Tonga by tribe and not a Bemba.

He added that UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema, Fr. Bwalya and Dr. Mumba were misdirected by criticizing the government of the day which he said it was performing well.

He urged the trio to wait for 2016 elections when there will be general elections and desist from issuing disparaging remarks against the Head of State and the entire Patriotic front leadership that Zambia is headed for economic hardships.

The NRP leader lashed out at fr. Bwalya for championing and supporting gay rights contrary to the country’s constitution.

Fr. Bwalya, a former Executive Director of Get Involved Zambia recently resigned as Chairman of the ZESCO Board of Directors is quoted having said he supports gay rights a move that has raised public outcry.

The Catholic Priest has since formed his political party called Alliance for Better Zambia (ABZ).

Government urged to maintain agriculture policies that are perceived to be user friendly by Small Scale Farmers

4

maize

Farmers in Kakushi Agriculture Block of Mkushi District have implored Government to maintain agriculture policies that are perceived to be user friendly by Small Scale Farmers.

Kakushi Block Farmers Chairperson Goodson Shinga stated this during the 2013 Kakushi Block Show that was held at Nambo Primary School yesterday.

Mr. Shinga said that there was need for Government to seriously consider addressing the pleas from Farmers that pertained to widespread reports that hinted on the reduction of Government percentage subsidy of the FISP (Farmer Input Support Program) package.

Mr. Shinga said that small scale Farmers were uncomfortable with reports that suggested that Government would reduce on its subsidy for the FISP, saying that such a move would negatively affect most small scale Farmers.

He said that coupled with this, there was need for Government to consider increasing the number of fertiliser bags given to each FISP beneficiary from the 4 to 8 bags.

Another Farmer, James Nshimba, said that Farmers in the area were apprehensive about the reports of reduction of the number of satellite FRA (Food Reserve Agency) depots for the 2013 marketing season.

Mr. Nshimba, who is also Chalata Ward Councillor, said that such a move would negatively affect Farmers as many would have to incur increased cost of transporting their maize to the fewer satellite depots.

Gracing the Show, Mkushi District Commissioner (DC) Christopher Chibuye maintained that Government recognized the significant contribution that small scale Farmers made towards the country’s GDP(Gross Domestic Product) as well as food security.

Mr. Chibuye said that in view of this, Government was committed towards effecting policies that would ensure the feasibility of small scale Farming as a business and livelihood.

He explained that there was need to understand that the Government was focused on ensuring the sustainability of policy initiatives such as FISP.

He said that it was important to note that the rationale governing the FISP program was centered on subsidising the input costs for the poorest Farmers, adding that such beneficiaries were expected to gradually graduate from total dependency.

Mr. Chibuye assured that the PF (Patriotic Front) Government was a listening Government, adding that Government was not relenting in effecting solutions which would be amicable for Farmers.
He also explained that Government’s decisions were based on the availability of resources to sustain several policies such as maintaining the 75% subsidy of the FISP fertiliser costs for the Farmer.

Kakushi is the third largest of the 6 Agrculture Blocks of Mkushi District, with 195 Cooperatives spread over Chalata, Nshinso and Matuku Wards.

Let those opposing the removal of fuel and maize subsidies advance convincing reasons-Lungu

69
Edgar Lungu
Edgar Lungu

The Government has challenged those opposing the removal of fuel and maize subsidies to advance convincing reasons because the move was meant to ensure equitable distribution of resources.

Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu said yesterday that it was sad that some people had taken advantage of the removal of subsidies to cause chaos in the country.

The minister said the Government wanted to save money and provide facilities such as hospitals, schools and roads, especially in rural parts of the country where most vulnerable people were found.

“Those who are aggrieved with the removal of the subsidies should engage the Government and give convincing reasons why the move should be reversed,” Mr Lungu said.

He said he expected United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema to advise students from universities to abide by the law rather than taking to the streets disturbing other people.

Mr Lungu said University of Zambia (UNZA) students were not peaceful in their demonstration because they even looted two shops at Arcades Shopping Mall.

“People should be honest, fair and give us chance to govern and they can judge after the first five-year term,” he said.

Mr Lungu said Mr Hichilema should not think that he was smarter than everyone because the Government was aware of what he was up to and 31 UNZA students who were apprehended on Friday would be screened.

However, Mr Hichilema has denied inciting students in learning institutions to riot over the removal of fuel and mealie meal subsidies.

The opposition leader has, however, pledged to hire lawyers if some University of Zambia (UNZA) students who were apprehended on Friday would be taken to court.

Mr Hichilema asked the police to release all the 31 Unza students.

Addressing journalists at the party secretariat in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Hichilema justified the protests by the university students, saying they were peacefully airing out their grievances against alleged poor Government policies and that demonstrations were a feature of any civilised society which must be allowed.

“I have asked friends of UPND, lawyers, to say if you are willing to represent Hakainde I am asking you humbly to represent the students. And I am confirming here that if Mr Sata doesn’t heed our demands to release the students, we will be there to support them,” he said.

Today’s message: Dare to Ask

bible

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.”

(Ephesians 3:20, NLT)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

When was the last time you asked God to do something impossible, something out of the ordinary? I believe that one reason we don’t see God do great things is because we only ask Him for small things. Most people pray over their food, pray for protection, or pray for wisdom. That’s all good, but don’t limit what God can do. There should be something you’re praying about, something that you’re asking for that is beyond you, something that you can’t accomplish in your own strength. Do you dare to ask?

Your dreams may look impossible. You don’t have the funding or the connections, but God is saying, “I dare you to ask Me to bring it to pass. I dare you to ask Me to show you a flood of My favor.”

All through the scripture, we see people doing this. Elisha prayed that it wouldn’t rain, and for three and a half years there was no rain. Joshua prayed for more daylight, and God stopped the sun. Follow their example and step out in faith. Dare to ask, dare to believe God, and see His mighty hand move on your behalf!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father, today I give praise and glory to You because You are worthy, You are able, and You are at work in me. I dare to ask for the impossible, to believe that You can accomplish infinitely more than I could ever ask or think in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The opposition National Restoration Party (NAREP) leader Elias Chipimo jr . says the removal of subsidies by government is regrettable.

And speaking earlier, NAREP National Secretary Reverend Jevan Kamanga called on senior officers who will occupy offices at the new headquarters to work hard and promote the vision of the party.

Mr. Chipimo says government should have avoided the removing of all subsidies in one go but could have instead staggered the reductions over a period of 6 months so that the impact is minimized.

The NAREP leader also called on government to clean up the oil procurement process in order to avoid unnecessary costs and the over pricing that he said causes high pump prices.

ZANIS reports that the opposition leader said this at the launch of his party’s new secretariat in Lusaka, which will also be the party’s headquarters.

The launch of the NAREP headquarters was characterized by various activities that include singing and dancing, poems by college students and party youths plus drama and chanting of the party slogans.

Mr. Chipimo jr. called on Zambians to be part of the change they need to see in the country and have a desire for change.

Zambia needs a political consensus that is built on values and compelling vision for development that places people, who he said are the nation’s most precious resource, at the very centre, he said.
He stated that his party will continue with its tradition of always being constructive in criticism and speak without insulting other political players.

HH accuse Sata of being a Dictator

Hakainde Hichilema
Hakainde Hichilema

Opposition United party for National Development (upnd) leader has accused president Michael Sata of being a dictator.
speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka this morning, upnd president Hakainde Hichilema says president Sata had lied to the Zambian people during the campaigns in 2011.

Mr.Hichilema says it is unfortunate to see the true colours of president Michael Sata after the Zambian people gave him a chance to govern the country based on his campaign promises that quickly changed the mind set of the majority Zambians to vote for him.

Mr.Hichilema also notes that there is urgent need for president Michael Sata and the patriotic front administration to urgently reverse their decision on fuel and maize subsidies if the country has to continue enjoying peace and stability.

The upnd leader adds that the current protests by the university of Zambia students are justifiable because they are affected and they know that their parents and guardians will not afford the current high cost of living that government wants to impose on the majority Zambians.

Mr.Hichilema further stated that Zambia is a democratic country and the citizens are not ready to be governed in a dictatorial manner.

Kitwe will host Zambia’s opening match at the 2013 COSAFA Cup on 14 July- a quarterfinal clash against Mozambique after COSAFA withdrew Kabwe from hosting cities.

COSAFA announced a venue change for the July COSAFA tournament on Saturday after withdrawing Kabwe from hosting cities that include Lusaka and Ndola as well.

COSAFA said Kabwe’s Godfrey “Ucar” Chitalu Stadium was not fit to host matches for the tournament to be staged between 6 and 20 July.

In Kitwe, Arthur Davies Stadium and Nkana Stadium are expected to host matches for the regional tournament.

“Kabwe was initially scheduled to be the third venue for the regional competition, but logistical challenges in upgrading to the required standard for the competition have meant it has been withdrawn,” read a statement from COSAFA.

The COSAFA Cup returns for the first time since 2009 when hosts Zimbabwe won the tournament after beating Zambia in the final.

Bemba Royal Establishment (BRE) has maintained that Henry Sosala Kanyanta is Senior Chief Mwamba.

Speaking after meeting with President Michael Sata appointed emissary Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba in Mungwi District yesterday, Chairperson of the traditional councillors Chief Chimba said that though the establishment stood by its earlier recommendations, it was willing to meet the President after he was debriefed by his emissary

And speaking to journalists after the meeting , Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba refused to say what resolutions were made with the bashi Lubemba (traditional councillors).

“All I can say is that the meeting went well. We charted the way forward and talked about many issues including the chieftainship of senior Chief Mwamba which will be resolved by the Head of State at an appropriate time,” he said.

Earlier, President Michael Sata assigned two (2) Cabinet Ministers to engage the Bemba Royal Establishment (BRE ) in dialogue on issues of chieftainship and other traditional matters in Bemba-land.

Those assigned are Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba and his counterpart at Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Professor Nkandu Luo.

And Mr. Mwamba, also known as GBM, arrived in Kasama yesterday morning aboard a ZAF plane and was met on arrival by Professor Luo and other government officials at Kasama Airport.

The duo , who are members of the royal family, later proceeded to Mungwi District where they met the Bemba Traditional Council known as the Bashilubemba at Paramount Chief Chitmukulu’s palace in Malole.

The consultative meeting was to focus mainly on Government’s recent decision to revoke the recognition of Henry Sosala as Senior Chief Mwamba of the Bemba speaking of Kasama.

Northern Province Minister Obius Chisala and other government officials also attended the consultative meeting between Government and the Bemba Royal Establishment.

Last week, President Sata revoked the recognition of Henry Kanyanta Sosala as Senior Chief Mwamba of the Bemba speaking people of Kasama.

Mr. Sosala has since accepted Government’s decision to de-gazette him and has offered a public apology to President Sata and the people of Zambia over his utterances.
