MMD youths want President Michael Sata to revoke Dandy Krazy’s award

Youths from the opposition MMD have appealed to President Michael Sata to revoke the award bestowed on popular musician Dandy Krazy after he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

On Independence Day in 2011, President Sata bestowed the Grand Commander of the Order of Freedom award on Dandy Krazy whose real name is Wesley Chibambo for his popular PF campaign song “Don’t Kubeba.”

On Thursday, Dandy Krazy pleaded guilty in the Luanshya Magistrate Court to drug trafficking charges after DEC officers found him in possession of 14 grams of cannabis.

MMD Youth leader Bowman Lusambo has now appealed to President Sata to immediately revoke the prestigious national award from Dandy Krazy following the drug saga.

“We believe Dandy Krazy is a bad role model to the youths and that award does not befit a man of his character. We hereby demand that President Sata grabs the award from Dandy. This again goes to show that there was not so much thought given to this matter before the decision to award him was arrived at.”

Mr. Lusambo has also challenged mobile phone operator Airtel to cancel all branding and advertising contracts with Dandy Krazy.

“If Airtel is a serious corporate organisation, it should immediately withdraw all billboards and advertisements on radio and TV bearing Dandy’s image. This is bad business for Airtel and should do what is right by dropping the partnership with Dandy forthwith,” Mr. Lusambo said.

Today’s Message: Exceptional Favor

bible

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“The path of the [uncompromisingly] just and righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines more and more (brighter and clearer) until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day…”
(Proverbs 4:18, AMP)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

We all face challenges. We all have obstacles to overcome. But if we can keep the right perspective, it will help us stay in faith so that we can move forward into victory. You may feel right now like the challenges that you face are too big or too overwhelming. One thing I’ve learned is that average people have average problems. Ordinary people have ordinary challenges. But remember, you’re not average. You’re not ordinary. You are extraordinary. God breathed His life into you. You are exceptional, and exceptional people face exceptional difficulties. But, the good news is that we serve an exceptional God! He’ll pour out His exceptional grace, exceptional wisdom and exceptional favor!

When you have an extraordinary problem; instead of being discouraged, be encouraged knowing that you’re an extraordinary person and have an extraordinary future. Your path is shining brighter and brighter. You are on an extraordinary path. Keep standing in faith, keep declaring victory over your future, keep declaring His promises. Keep declaring that you are moving forward into the exceptional favor the Lord has in store for you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father in heaven, today I lift my eyes to You. I know that You are the One who helps me and has given me an extraordinary future. I choose to stand in faith today knowing that You have a wonderful plan in store for me in Jesus’ name! Amen.

One of the generators at Kafue Gorge power station developed a fault recently causing widespread electricity load-shedding.

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has urged the government to sort the out problems at University of Zambia-UNZA- that led to protests by students.

Mr Hichilema says it is important that governments attend to the demands of the students in good time.

He says what students are demanding is their entitlements.

Mr Hichilema was speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka attended by his special advisors, Douglas Siakalima and William Banda, UPND spokesperson, Charles Kakoma former Evelyn Hone College Journalism Lecturer, Clayson Hamasaka.

Mr Hichilema has also blamed the government for the shortage of mealie-meal in some parts of the country.

But Agriculture Minister Robert Sichinga said in Parliament this week that the country has enough maize stocks.

He attributed that shortage of mealie-meal to lack of capacity by millers.

And former MMD Lukulu West Member of Parliament Misheck Mutelo has defected to the UPND.

Mr Mutelo defected during the UPND press briefing.

Meanwhile, UPND campaign team in Livingstone has requested the Electoral Commission of Zambia to allow it distribute flyers to Livingstone residents since flyers are classified as print material.

UPND Livingstone Campaign Manager, Highvie Hamudud says flyers should be freely distributed because they are within the allowed print and electronic medium of campaigns allowed by the ECZ.

Paul Shalala reports from Livingstone that Mr Hamudud says there is no need for the ECZ to bar political parties in distributing flyers because the act can be done quietly without disturbing peace.

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front Media and Publicity Director Chanda Mfula says Livingstone is poised for more developmental projects in the coming months.

Speaking when he appeared on Falls FM radio last evening, Mr Mfula said the Patriotic Front Government will build a modern market, a modern bus terminus, a university, schools and roads in the tourist capital.

He has therefore asked the people of Livingstone to vote for PF candidate, Lawrence Evans on Thursday so that the named developmental projects can be effectively done.

We’ll de-campaign parties that won’t give equal opportunities to women in 2016 -NGOCC

24

The Non Governmental Organizations’ Coordinating Council- NGOCC- has vowed to de-campaign political parties in the country that are not giving equal opportunities for women to take up leadership positions in politics prior to the 2016 general elections.

NGOCC vice chairperson Mary Mulenga says her organization has observed with displeasure that despite massive advocacy for the women%u2019s fifty percent participation in leadership position in the country, political parties are still not adopting the women.

Speaking in an interview with Qfm, Ms. Mulenga said the percentage for women participation in vying for leadership positions among political parties has dropped to eleven percent since the 2011 general elections.

Ms. Mulenga affirmed that women’s participation in holding leadership position in the government as per the SADC protocol consent to by Zambia, women’s involvement should start with political parties.

And he government has been asked to give 50 per cent of jobs that are being created in the country to women in order to accelerate the gender agenda.

Kabompo District Gender Chairperson Phoebe Kilele made the call when she addressed a crowd of women during the international women’s day commemoration at Kabompo secondary school yesterday.

Mrs Kilele said that in the UNIP and MMD regimes women were sidelined in all angles of life.

She said that the appointment of women in key positions in government by the PF government was not a mistake and must be supported by all development and peace loving women and men.

She said that women were considered subordinate socially, economically, spiritually, and physically and had no say.

Mrs Kilele noted that Zambian women were naturally hard workers, effective and efficient managers at all levels and the appointment of a female Inspector General of police, Stella Libongani was a commendable appointment and women in Zambia were happy.

And speaking at the same function Kabompo central ward councillor Janet Kaputula (UPND) bemoaned the small number of female elected ward counsellors in district councillors and female members of parliament in the North-Western province.

Ms Kaputula said that she was saddened that since independence North-Western province can have only three elected Counsellors, two in Kasempa and herself in Kabompo while there is only a single female member of parliament in the whole province.

She appealed to women who have attained 18 years and 21 years to aspire for election to the positions of Councillors and members of parliament respectively in order to enhance the voice of women in the province.

Ms Kaputula however, assured the government that women in Kabompo were rallying behind President Michael Sata and the first lady and able government to promote the welfare of women in the country.

Tourism and Arts Minister Sylvia Masebo has maintained that Zambia and Zimbabwe have adequately prepared for hosting the United Nations World Tourism Organisation General Assembly even if the event was to be held tomorrow.

Speaking in Berlin, Germany, today, Ms Masebo said the preparedness of the two countries can be seen in the strengthened collaborative efforts at various levels as the UNWTO event draws close.

Answering questions from Zimbabweans journalists who mobbed her when she visited that country’s stand at the ongoing World Travel Trade show in Berlin, Ms Masebo stressed that the two countries have so far done well and are ready to host the event.

“As we stand now, Zambia and Zimbabwe area both ready to host this event. The two countries have been working in unison,” the minister said.

Ms Masebo explained that the two countries will use the UNWTO general assembly to showcase Africa as a preferred tourism destination.

“We want this to even go beyond the UNWTO,” she said.

The Zimbabwean journalists wanted to know if the two countries would manage to host the event considering that only few months are remaining before the hosting dates of 24 to 29th August 2013.

But Ms Masebo maintained that the two countries have done well in the preparations as they have been busy developing tourism infrastructure.

“The two countries are working as one. We have various technical committees including the ministerial one,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Masebo has visited various African stands at the ongoing World Travel show to lobby their support during the hosting on the UNWTO general assembly.

The minister met and discussed with senior officials from the African countries that are exhibiting at the show.

Among the stands visited include those of the Seychelles, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Botswana, South Sudan and Nigeria.

Ms Masebo called for support among African countries in order to foster economic development.

When she visited the Nigerian stands, she proposed that Zambia and Nigeria should consider having a friendly football match as former and current African champions as part of the UNWTO general assembly activities.

Ms Masebo discussed with Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, Olumba Runsewe, how the two countries can benefit from sports tourism.

Government investigating case in which 11 KCM senior managers contracts were terminated without reasons

Government is investigating the case in which 11 Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) senior managers whose contracts were terminated without giving reasons last month.

Mines Minister Yamfwa Mukanga said in an interview yesterday that Government was concerned with any loss of jobs because its vision was to create more jobs for Zambians.

Mr Mukanga said he would engage the Ministry of Labour and Social Security on the matter and warned mine owners to desist from terminating contracts of locals without issuing valid reasons at the expense of expatriates.

He said he would issue a comprehensive statement next week after concluding the investigations and that he was keen to know how many expatriates were affected.

“Any termination of employment without thorough consultations is not right even if it is one person affected, I have to move in. Government will not accept loss of jobs because we want to create more jobs,” he said.

The minister explained that it was wrong to see locals lose jobs and replaced by expatriates.

“It is wrong to have Zambians replaced by expatriates but I am yet to get the reasons on why KCM terminated contracts and I want to know how many expatriates were affected. I want to know who is taking up the jobs of the managers. After getting the reasons, I will make a serious statement,” he warned.

Last month, KCM dismissed 11 senior managers who were in full time and pensionable employment reportedly in a bid to ‘down size’ their workforce.

The affected workers, however, wondered why it was only Zambian senior members of staff who were affected if the termination of employment was genuinely meant to reduce the labour force.

Chingola District Commissioner George Sichula met KCM management who told him that the affected senior managers were a liability and a cost to the company.

Labour and Social Security Minister Fackson Shamenda urged both local and foreign investors not to deliberately flout labour laws and warned employers to desist from terminating contracts of workers without giving reasons.

Zambia has clinched a deal with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Cable News Network (CNN) in which the two international news networks will begin marketing Zambia’s tourism ahead of the UN World Tourism Organisation general assembly slated for August this year.

This came to light in Berlin, Germany today when regional heads of the BBC and CNN met Tourism and Arts Minister Silvia Masebo at the Zambian stand at the ongoing World travel trade show.

BBC Director for Africa, Katie Waxman and CNN Director for Europe, Middle East and Arfica, Imran Ahmad discussed with Ms Masebo a number of strategies that will be employed to market Zambia’s tourism.

The two international news networks demonstrated to the minister how Zambia’s tourism will be show cased to the international community and how the country stands to benefit from this marketing strategy.

Zambia and Zimbabwe will be co-hosting the 20th session of the186 member UNWTO general assembly in Livingstone and Victoria Falls Town.

And speaking in an interview with Zambian journalists in Berlin, Zambia Tourist Board (ZTB) Managing Director Felix Chaila said the contract with BBC and CNN has already been signed.

Mr Chaila said Zambia has initiated advertising programmes on both BBC and CNN in which the country will be showcased as the preferred tourism destination.

“This is a ground breaking development because Zambia as a preferred destination will be viewed internationally as BBC and CNN are high profile international media organisations,” he said.

Mr Chaila said Zambia has employed marketing strategies in which advertising will be done using a combination of media platforms.

“We are going to also place adverts on BBC online as you know that most tourists rely on internet search engines to get information,” said Mr Chaila.

Mr Chaila said Zambia wants to create a long term relationship with CNN and BBC as it seeks to increase visibility through the international media audience.

“We want tourists to choose Zambia as the best destination,” he said.

UPND has “spare candidates” in all constituencies-Chibwe

27

The opposition UPND has warned MP’s accepting deputy ministerial positions in the PF government of expulsion.

UPND Secretary General Winstone Chibwe told Journalists in Lusaka that the party will not hesitate to expel any MP for accepting a job from the PF without the party’s blessings.

“As UPND, we want MP’s who are full of integrity,” Mr. Chibwe said.

He said the party has enough members to stand in any constituency in case of a bye election.

“Just as it happens when you take your vehicle to the garage, you go there with your spare tyre. As UPND, we also have spare candidates in all constituencies ready to be adopted if a bye election occurred,” Mr. Chibwe said.
