As we continue to promote Poetry in Zambia ; here are this weeks poems ,enjoy

MY GARDEN OF IllUSION by Luka Mwango

In my garden of illusion

Reality is just a protrusion

Order a mythical confusion

I live life smelling the roses of glamour

But oblivious to the thorns that clamor

My vision obscured by the devil’s hedges

Never reading any of the Bible’s pages

So I feed on Hollywood’s carrots

Promising sight but delivering maggots

The grapes of my vineyard are my secret indulgence

So hangover, alcohol is my fragrance

Even though it causes me much grievance

The lilies are my erotic delight

In my attempt to find cloud 9, like a kite

Yet always leaving me contrite

The exotic flora a blazing trail of medication

Abuse is the language of replication

And soon addiction is the accent of my conviction

Alas, my garden of Illusion is not eternal

It lasts lesser each time

Then Authenticity pays me visit

Bringing with him bullets of truth

And the arsenal of proof

With a wounded heart I proclaim

My garden is…DEATH!

AFRICA IS A LUCKY GUY by KASANDA MWAPE

Dedicated to Leila Sibeso Mwiya and like all good stories it starts at the end…

… And so the night cries

As the moon dies

So the sun can rise

The the clear blue skies…

Hujambo… Kiswahili… How are you… Goodmorning

The birds sings songs they’ve never heard before…

Shocked to tongues by what hid behind natures door…

For no eye had seen what he had in store…

A Splendor… 10-10 from head to toe…

HUUJAAAAMBOOO!! Thunder wa Simba! the Lions Roar!…

A beautiful one was born, i heard her call…

She’s ama-zing the way her feet kiss the floor…

A down to Earth beauty but my eyes see more!…

Past the gold nature hid her in…

I see the diamond she is deep within…

The sweet-heart no other warrior could win…

But i am Simba wa Simba, The Warrior King!

Hujambo beautiful african child…

Im sorry but iv travelled a lifetime now…

Through the jungle of rythms but none my style…

Til i laid eyes on you Tabasamu yangu …it means “My smile”

Turn those sweet brown eyes away from me…

For my strength is no match for the beauty i see…

I brought u a drum that only plays when love is true…

Listen… “Boom boom” my heart beats for you…

She smiles, like sunlight across my dark face sky…

Nakupenda …couldnt resist it even if i tried…

“Yelele Mama!” my heart sings as my eyes, they cry…

Im so alive in that moment i could almost die…

queen of my world… My brown lozi girl

Her skin flows sweet like the garden of Eden…

Milk and honey from her feet to her cute nose even…

A dark cloud as she close her eyes, i realise then…

Its because she open them that the sun is risen…

Dew of my morning… My brown lozi girl

Bye bye batman, no more dark nights as the lonely moon stares pon stars far away…

Hello Temptations because “Iv got sunshine…” and she fills my sky today…

Those brown eyes…

… And so the night cries

as the moon dies

so the sun can rise

To the clear blue skies

Hujambo, kiswahili… How are you, goodmorning

African Woman (By Isunge Mwangase)

She wakes up at 4AM,

A product of her I am,

Fire wood on her head,

Her social life is dead,

Sometimes she forgets her name,

She works hard but stays the same

To put food on the table,

Though she too feeble

Six of us, one slice of bread,

Politicians and their greed,

They eat the apple and the seed,

This is the life we lead

We’re dying- encircled by crows,

The sweat on our brows,

Burns like the tears in our souls,

Ever fresh our body’s sores,

They don’t heal, we’re malnourished,

How can one be healthy ever famished?

The tunnel has but a little light

It is not yet in sight,

But one day it will,

When we will never miss a meal.

All it takes are faith and hope,

God’s strength to help us cope,

Love and determination-

And free education

Its Chiluba ,Mwanawasa and RB’s fault- Katele Kalumba

Former MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba
Former MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba

FORMER MMD national secretary Katele Kalumba has revealed that the three successive MMD presidents interfered in the submission of returns to the Registrar of Societies and insisted that they be submitted directly to the Minister of Home Affairs.

The three former Presidents of MMD are Frederick Chiluba, Levy Mwanawasa and Rupiah Banda.

Dr Kalumba said in an interview from Chiengi yesterday that the deregistration of the MMD affirms his earlier concerns that there are many wrongs, malpractices and procedural activities that the former ruling party as an institution, must come out publicly and apologise that it made grievous mistakes.

“During my tenure as national secretary, the documents were submitted to the Minister of Home Affairs by State House and what I suspect is that they did nothing and simply told the Registrar of Societies to look the other way. This was done between the party president and the minister responsible for the Registrar of Societies,” Dr Kalumba said.
He added: “We were always asked to do returns and we took the documents but we were directed by the party president, in my case Dr Mwanawasa and Mr Banda who were also republican presidents, to take them to the Minister of Home Affairs.”

He also said during his tenure as national secretary, the MMD was up to date in submitting annual returns but that the branches were not included, in accordance with the law.

Dr Kalumba said the law requires that if an organisation has more than 10 branches, they should be registered.

“That is when the President intervened with the Minister of Home Affairs and perhaps that is when things were not done properly. I submitted returns for MMD, including change of executive leadership at the beginning of every year,” Dr Kalumba said.

He added: “We must assume responsibility and for me personally, I am sorry for the five years I served. I feel I let the members down, others must speak for themselves. I take responsibility, I listened to Dr Mwanawasa and Mr Banda. I could have handled things directly with the Registrar of Societies, but this was not the case.”

MMD MPs in parliament as usual despite the party’s de-registration

Members of Parliament

Business in Parliament proceeded as usual despite the de-registration of the MMD as a political party by the Registrar of Societies.

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Mkhondo Lungu said he will make a ruling on a later date, regarding the position of the MMD in Parliament.

He was responding to Mfuwe member of Parliament (MP) Mwimba Malama (Patriotic Front) who wanted to know why MMD MPs were in the National Assembly when their party has been de-registered.

He asked whether it was in order for MMD MPs to participate in parliamentary proceedings when their party was no longer in existence.

“I would like to know whether MMD MPs are in order to come to this House when in fact there is no MMD party, are they in order to occupy these seats when their party has been de-registered?” he asked.

And Monze MP Jack Mwiimbu (UPND) also raised a point of order to find out whether Government was in order to allow MMD ministers, serving in the PF, to de-register their own party.

The Deputy Speaker, who is also MMD MP for Lundazi, said he would only pass a ruling at a later date.

MMD challenges de-registration in court

The spokesperson for Zambia’s main opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) said the party is legally challenging the government’s Registrar of Societies for what the party insisted was its “unlawful” de-registration.

Dora Siliya said the head of the government agency is an undisciplined government official, who is attempting to obliterate the MMD. Machinations, she said, will not work.

Ms Siliya said her party has up-to-date in registration payment receipts.

“We’ve paid our returns of statutory obligations up to 13th January 2012. As such, we are a validly-registered political party. This is why we received with shock and contempt the attempt by the Registrar of Societies stating that he has de-registered the MMD for failure to pay statutory obligations,” said Siliya.

“Our lawyers have taken up this matter to get an execution of stay. However, we know that this is a step to obliterate the MMD.”

The opposition party has notified the police it will embark on a demonstration on Saturday to protest what the MMD says is political harassment by the government.

Yesterday Chief Registrar of Societies, Clement Andeleki de-registered the MMD for non compliance with the Societies Act.

The Registrar of Society maintained that the former ruling party MMD owes them over K390 million in arrears. He explained that the money is from the 42 registered braches of the MMD across the country and dates back to 1991.

He said the former ruling party who registered 43 branches has only been paying for its Headquarters in Lusaka while neglecting other branches.

However Ms.Siliya said that plans to decimate the main opposition will not work insisting that members of the MMD will not allow the party to be bullied into submission.

“We governed this country using the rule of law and we would be the last one not to be able to follow the law. So, we are confident that this attempt will be treated with the contempt it deserves,” said Siliya. “It’s an attempt to mutilate democracy by one person trying to undermine the interests of 13 million Zambians.”

Siliya said the government agency failed to notify her party before announcing its “illegally premature” decision to de-register the MMD. She insists her party has 21 days to appeal the decision following a notice of non-compliance.

“Our bone of contention is, even if the Registrar of Societies felt there was something we hadn’t done, at least he should have notified us. We got no notice at all,” said Siliya.

“All we saw were threats in the paper and finally a copy of a press briefing, not even a letter to the party where this undisciplined government official got as far as saying he has, with immediate effect, declared the MMD 53 seats in parliament vacant.”

Siliya said the MMD cannot be destroyed by what she says is an overzealous government official’s assault on democracy.

President Michael Sata has invited Chinese investors to explore various areas of investment in the country. This was during a closed-door meeting at State House today, when he met a 14- member delegation from Beijing led by Mr Luo Tao, the General Manager of China Non-ferrous Metal Mining Company (CNMC) group.

According to a press release from State House, Mr Luo assured the Head of State who was flanked by Republican Vice-President Dr Guy Scott, that CNMC was confident of its investment in Zambia because President Sata commands a strong and ambitious team.

He said CNMC plans to accelerate its investment in Zambia.

“The US$400 million Mulyashi mining project in Luanshya will commence production by the end of this month. And our next project is the US$800 million South East Ore body at Chambishi mines. This is the plan of our projects in the near future,” Mr Luo said.

Mr Luo described President Sata as a kind man who is focussed on job creation and economic development of the country.

“Employment and economic development of Zambia is also a responsibility of Chinese investors here. I promise that we will adhere to Zambian laws and do what we are required to do,” he said.

In response, President Sata recognized the important role Chinese investment was playing in the country.

“The investment has benefitted both Zambia and China. Therefore, every expansion in investment should be for the mutual benefit of the two countries and its people,” the President said.

“I would encourage you to bring more Chinese investors to invest in various areas of investment in the country especially mineral exploration. We would also like you to get involved in agriculture, textile and many other sectors.”

Tonga Tradition Association castigates UPND

20

The Tonga Tradition Association (TTA) has described the opposition UPND as an amateur in it’s handling of the ongoing debate and attempts by the PF government to realign two districts from the Southern Province.

TTA president Dickson Namanza says the UPND has exposed its amateurish way of handling national issues by using youths to champion its cause on important occasions such as the youth day celebrations which the party youths boycotted yesterday in protest.

Mr. Namanza who however says he is against the realignment of the districts as nature is immovable, says the opposition party should not seek to gain political mileage during important national events but show maturity in its approach by realizing that national days are meant at interacting with those in authority on important matters affecting the country.

He says it is difficult to understand the level of thinking that the UPND is exposing itself to and added that the Tonga Tradition Association will never be part to decisions that would end up disadvantaging the youths in the province and completely alienate them from the process of national development.

He adds that he was in support of the statement by Chieftainess Mwenda of Mazabuka who called on the UPND to realize its position in the governance of the country and desist from using youths to champion a cause that has no direct bearing on it as a political party.

But Southern Province UPND Youth Chairman,Francis Hakayobe has advised both chieftainess Mwenda and Mr Namanza to silently seek President Michael Sata’s financial help and leave the UPND alone as it was championing a cause that concerned the people in the region.

Mr. Hakayobe says the party is aware of machinations by the chieftainess to gain state favors as evidenced by her visit to state house last month which reportedly ended into her being transported back to her palace in a state helicopter after promising to incite other chiefs to accept the realignment move.

The youth leader said the people of the Southern Province will not be swayed by hypocritical and selfish leaders with greedy agendas that do not benefit the region and was quick to commend the chiefs led by chief Mukuni and other delegates that attended the stakeholders meeting in Choma, describing them as patriots.

Andeleki asked to resolve the MMD issue amicably as by elections will gobble billions

98

Foundation for Democratic Process-FODEP has appealed to Registrar of Societies Clement Andeleki to forgive the MMD for not remitting annual returns over the years.

FODEP Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi says calling for over fifty by-elections will gobble billions of Kwacha which can be channeled to needy areas.

Mr. Chipenzi says Mr. Andeleki must find an amicable way of helping to resolve the matter with the MMD leadership.

He told ZNBC News that calling for over fifty by-elections will not be any different from holding a general election.

And the Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes-Saccord has described the de-registration of the MMD as unfortunate.

Saccord Information Officer Obby Chibuluma has called on Mr. Andeleki to find a way of sitting down the MMD leadership over the accrued returns.

Meanwhile, the opposition UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema says his party is up to date with returns to the Registrar of Societies.

Mr. Hichilema however stressed that it will be costly for the country to hold over fifty parliamentary by-elections.

Chief Registrar of societies de-registers MMD despite droping the idea last week

305

The Movement for Multi Party Democracy-MMD has been de-registered by the Registrar of Societies for non compliance with the Societies Act.

Chief Registrar of Societies, Clement Andeleki says this means the former ruling party ceases to operate as a political party in Zambia and it has lost all the fifty three seats in parliament.

Mr. Andeleki says the action arises from the non payment of statutorily fees amounting over three hundred and ninety million Kwacha.

He made the announcement at a press briefing at the Ministry of Home Affairs Headquarters this morning.

Mr. Andeleki says the decision has been taken after several reminders from the time the MMD was in government.

And Mr Andeleki says he will be writing to the Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini to inform him about the de-registration of the MMD.

He has warned erring registered organisations, Churches, NGOs and political parties to be legally compliant with the Societies Act if they are to continue operating in Zambia.

Last week the Registrar of Societies rescinded the decision to de-register the MMD in the interest of good governance and democracy.

The MMD had engaged Hobday Kabwe & Company to help resolve the issue of close to K400 million in outstanding arrears from annual returns.

Registrar of Societies, Clement Andeleki, said that Mr Kabwe had requested his office to see how best they could resolve the arrears which have accumulated since 1993.

[pullquote]“I have been approached by several stakeholders involved in good governance and democracy not to deregister the party as this would be an injury to the young democracy and the economy of the country more especially that we recently held elections,” he said.[/pullquote]

He said in the interest of good governance and in order to prevent the declaration of 55 parliamentary seats vacant, his office would discuss other ways through which the K390 million could be settled.

“I have been approached by several stakeholders involved in good governance and democracy not to deregister the party as this would be an injury to the young democracy and the economy of the country more especially that we recently held elections,” he said.

He said the move was not politically motivated but was a requirement for the party to remit annual returns.

Magistrate warns State Prosecutors against delaying Maxwell Mwale’s bicycles case

Lusaka chief resident magistrate Joshua Banda has warned state prosecutors against applying for unnecessary adjournments in former Mines Minister Maxwell Mwale’s case.

Magistrate Banda told prosecutors when they applied for an adjournment claiming that the Director of Public Prosecution(DPP) was in custody of the case file.

Police senior legal officer, Simon Tembo made the application saying the DPP was studying the matter and that the state was waiting to be given direction on how to proceed.

In granting bail, Magistrate Banda warned the State prosecutors that he was granting them an adjournment for the last time.

Magistrate Banda described the continued adjournment of the matter as unfair.

This is in a matter in which Mr. Mwale is facing one count of failing to account for possession of properties involving over two hundred bicycles believed to have been stolen.

Mr Mwale has allegedly failed to account for 261 bicycles deemed to have been unlawfully obtained. It is alleged that on October, 18, 2011, Mr Mwale jointly with others had in their possession 261 bicycles which were reasonably suspected to have been acquired unlawfully

Mpika Chief Kopa appeals for relief food, wants maize at the depot which is just going to waste

Thousands of bags of maize have continued to go to waste in the country.

SENIOR Chief Kopa of the Bisa people in Mpika district in Northern Province has appealed to Government to send relief food to Munikashi area in his chiefdom where people are facing starvation.

The traditional leader said in an interview from Mpika yesterday that the people in Munikashi depend on fishing for their livelihood but they likely suffer starvation because the streams where they fish from are depleted.

People in Munikashi engage in a fish-for-maize or cassava barter system but have almost nothing to continue with this kind of trade due to lack of fish in the nearby streams. Senior Chief Kopa said the people in the area are now walking long distances to search for food while others are doing some pieces of work in neighbouring villages to get a meal.

“In my chiefdom, we have Munikashi area where most of the people depend on fishing for their survival. But right now, they have no food because the streams no longer have fish,” he said. The traditional ruler appealed to Government to consider helping the people in Munikashi with relief food before the hunger situation worsens.

The chief said Government could probably give the starving people in his area the bags of maize at Kopamusumba satellite depot which are just rotting. “Near my palace, there is a satellite depot with bags of maize which are just rotting. We are appealing to the Government to consider giving the people the bags of maize to enable them to feed their families,” he said.

Senior Chief Kopa said Munikashi is a big community and that most of his subjects originate from there. He also called on Government to expedite the construction of Kopa High School in his chiefdom.
Senior Chief Kopa said work on the school is being done at a slow pace.
