Poem by Daliso Banda

8

Poetry is an art form in Zambia that is slowly growing and getting more recognition .

Poetry is a  kind of self expression,A lot more needs to be done to bring poetry into the lime light

Born in Zambia, Daliso Banda has lived within unique cultures in both in Zambia as well as China, and this diverse background shines through in the imagery of the poems.

Banda offers a fascinating contrast between experiences living in other countries with the universal events experienced in relationships and shares this profound thoughts about life and death-joy and sadness-love and hate.

In the poem “Heartbreaker,” the reader is transported back to the memory of a first love when Banda writes, “She’s tender and caring. The kind of a woman that makes a man forget about the outside world.” In “Friends Forever,” Banda captures the beauty of two souls who find the peace of everlasting friendship: “Lovely like a rose, faithful like a diary. Friends from the start-friends till the end of time.”

For those who are experiencing loneliness or who are just dreaming of better days, Banda’s flowing and lyrical style accompanies a strong message of hope that illustrates that no one is ever truly alone.

Ban Ki-Moon Salutes Zambia’s AFCON Win

14

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has saluted Zambia’s 2012 Africa Cup victory.

Ban said on Friday afternoon when he addressed a special session of parliament in Lusaka that Zambia’s win over Cote d’Ivoire in Libreville on February 12 was written in the sky.

“Congratulations to Chipolopolo. What a victory. Africa and the World saw that the success was more than a football team. “We saw the spirit of Zambia,” Ban said.

“For all those who believe in miracles, all those who look for unsung heroes or honor those who came before, we know that Zambia’s victory was indeed written in the sky.”

Andrew Kamanga is in trouble with Faz over his response to attacks from sports minister Chishimba Kambwili.

Faz communications officer Erick Mwanza said in a statement on Friday that the Kabwe Warriors chairman has brought the game into ridicule and disrepute.

“Mr. Kamanga, who is a member through Kabwe Warriors FC, we shall, as is our stated policy, not respond to him through the media but use existing channels of communication and appropriate judicial bodies to deal with him regarding his attack on the Association through his unfounded allegations which can bring the name of the Association into ridicule and disrepute,” Mwanza said.

Mwanza however said Faz will not deal with Nkhosi Warriors chairman Keith Mwewa whom he said was not a member of Faz and refer the case to its affiliate the Lusaka Amateur Football Association.

“We would to reaffirm that Football House would have recommended punitive sanctions against Mr. Mwewa were he a member of FAZ.
However, the organisation he is reported to represent, Nkhosi Warriors FC, is NOT a member of FAZ and can therefore not be dealt with by the Association,” Mwanza said.

Mwanza accused Mwewa and Kamanga of trying to open old wounds and being divisive in the run-up to the  March 31 Faz annual general meeting.

“It is therefore irresponsible that these people who have failed to prove themselves at club administration should be given so much coverage,” he said.

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has warned that it will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against individuals and erring members who bring the name of the sport in disrepute.

The warning comes in the wake of recent media reports were some soccer administrators have been issuing incessant attacks on Youth and Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili following his counsel to delegates to the 2012 FAZ Annual General Meeting next month.

FAZ Communications Manager, Erick Mwanza has described press reports as regrettable, unfair and inimical to the country’s desire to continue nurturing and building blocks of national development for the good of the game.

Mr. Mwanza observed that it has become fashionable amongst some of the members to become vocal whenever the time for FAZ AGM approached.

This was in response to media reports attributed to Nkhosi Warriors Football Club chairperson Keith Mwewa and Kabwe Warriors Club chairperson Andrew Kamanga in which the two attacked Sports Minister, Chishimba Kambwili.

Mr. Mwanza urged FAZ members to be alive to regulations and rules governing their conduct as well as the policy of non engagement with the public and government through the medium of the press under any circumstance.

He stated that the association is calling upon all its members to continue holding hands and work towards the greater unity of the game and aspire for more success.

Mr. Mwanza said the association would use existing channels of communication and appropriate judicial bodies to deal with the two erring members whose conduct can bring the name of the Association into ridicule and disrepute.

Government disappointed with selfish UPND politicians

38
Minister Fackson Shamenda

Chief Government Spokesperson Fackson Shamenda has expressed disappointment at some UPND leaders who are allegedly inciting youths in Southern province to demonstrate against the realignment of districts in the province.

Mr. Shamenda has since cautioned youths against being incited to demonstrate on matters that they do not understand saying they risk being misled by UPND selfish politicians.

Mr. Shamenda was speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.

He said the demonstrations can only become a fundamental basic human right when protesters fail to utilize the normal established channels of communication.

He urged young people to engage into dialogue and desist from rushing into demonstrations because the exercise was retrogressive to national development.

Mr. Shamenda, who is also Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Labour, said demonstrations were legal when solidarity matches are taken up after dialogue has failed between the two parties.

Mr. Shamenda noted that youths in Southern province did not understand what they wanted adding that such moves might cause anarchy in the nation.

He further urged leaders not use youths to instigate violence in the country but should strive to make Zambia a peaceful country.

The Minister regretted that some leaders were restricting their interests only to their regions and not the nation at large.

Mr. Shamenda explained that national leaders were not supposed to regionalize were they came from, describing the move as unfortunate.

Recently, United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema indicated that government should not threaten demonstrators in Southern province because doing so was their basic fundamental human right.

Shikapwasha refuses to comment on Stand up for Zambia documentary as Sam Phiri denies any involvement

60

Former Minister of Information, Ronnie Shikapwasha has refused to be drawn in to the  debate where he is accused of directing ZNBC to air the infamous Stand up for Zambia documentary by Chanda Chimba.

Lieutenant General Shikapwasha who was Minister at the time of the documentary refused to answer any questions from a ZANIS reporter who contacted him for a comment.

The former Chief Government Spokesperson said he had nothing to comment on the matter.

Lt. Gen. Shikapwasha and his Permanent Secretary (PS) Dr. Sam Phiri were cited to have directed ZNBC to air the libellous documentary on ZNBC and they have since been surcharged to pay K900 million in legal fees.

Information Minister, Fackson Shamenda who disclosed this at media briefing in Lusaka yesterday said, the two former government officials have been surcharged and will foot the over K900 million in legal fees to SBN Legal Practitioners who represented ZNBC in court cases.

[pullquote]“I was a civil servant and how can I be made to pay because in the first place the lawyers sued ZNBC which is a different entity,” he said.[/pullquote]

But Former Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Sam Phiri expressed ignorance of the documentary and denied any involvement in its airing.

Dr. Phiri said he found the programme airing on ZNBC when he joined government as PS in 2010 and did not know who directed the airing of the documentary.

He has since challenged the Ministry of Information and ZNBC to produce evidence where he instructed the airing of the stand up for Zambia documentary.

“I came to the Ministry from South Africa in November 2010 and found the programme airing and I never even knew anything about it nor where it was produced, including the person called Chanda Chimba who was producing the same documentary,” he said.

“I would be happy if the Ministry or indeed ZNBC produce evidence of my involvement or directive to air the documentary in question,” Dr.Phiri said.

The former PS also wondered how he could be made to pay the money when the lawyers were demanding money from ZNBC which is a public institution.

“I was a civil servant and how can I be made to pay because in the first place the lawyers sued ZNBC which is a different entity,” he said.

Dr. Phiri has also challenged the board at ZNBC to come out in the open and release the evidence that he was among the persons that directed for the airing of the documentary.

Minister of Youth and Sports Chishimba Kambwili has implored Zambians to work hard and emulate the resilience exhibited by the victorious Zambia National Soccer Team in fighting vices such as disease, hunger and corruption.

Mr. Kambwili said Zambians needs to embrace key values such as team work, togetherness and dedication to duty if they are to contribute meaningfully to national development.

He stated that Zambians needs to show selflessness, discipline and resilience by putting the country first in accomplishing both personal and national goals that brings pride to the country.

Mr. Kambwili said this in Lusaka today when he officially launched the two week nationwide tour of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations trophy that Zambia won in Gabon.

The Minister explained that the tour will begin next week with Choma and end in Lusaka after going round all the 10 provincial centres.

Mr. Kambwili said government in collaboration with the private sector and other stakeholders have come up with the provincial tours in order to accord the general citizenry an opportunity to see the prestigious trophy.

He commended Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) and Zambian Breweries for sponsoring the tour to enable the general citizenry across the country to share in the celebrations.

Mr. Kambwili has since urged the private sector to emulate the two firms by coming on board and be associated with the success of the team.

Earlier, Youth and Sport Permanent Secretary Agness Musunga said government in partnership with various stakeholders had come up with a Steering Committee under the provincial tour following numerous appeals from soccer fans to see the AFCON trophy.

Ms. Musunga said government wants every Zambian to share in celebrating the National Team’s momentous achievement.

The trophy will have a one day stay in each provincial centre with the viewing time ranging from 8 to 17 hours. She however advised the general public that time is subject to change in line with the programme.

Zambia emerged victorious after beating Cote D’voire 8-7 on post match penalties following the two teams’ goal draw in regulation time.

Slap D gets HIV test for MTV’s Me, Myself and HIV

20

Slap D is taking part in the MTV ‘s initiative , Me , Myself and HIV ,which is part of their Staying alive campaign to get the youths to know more about HIV and to get tested.

Slap D is a role model for today’s youths ,him getting tested and knowing his status will encourage other youths to do the same.

Testing for HIV is quick and confidential .

So what are you waiting for , go and get tested today !

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnseMtC1-ac

It’s easy to get weighed down with facts and stats when it comes to HIV, but there are a few pieces of information which are definitely worth knowing. Not only will they educate you, they’ll also enable you to make smarter choices when it comes to your sex life.

What is HIV

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Viruses like HIV need to infect the cells of a living organism in order to replicate. The human immune system usually finds and kills viruses fairly quickly, but HIV attacks the immune system itself – the very thing that would normally get rid of a virus. HIV infects and gradually destroys a person’s immune system, reducing their body’s ability to fight against even simple infections like a common cold.

Prevention

If you are having sex, there are ways to make it much safer and protect yourself from the risk of HIV. Using a condom correctly (or a femidom) reduces the risk of HIV transmission because it stops the sexual bodily fluids from coming in to contact with one another. Remaining faithful to one partner, once you have tested together and know each others’ status, also reduces the risk of infection because you expose yourself less often to the risks of HIV.
For men, circumcision is now showing signs of reducing the risk of contracting HIV by 60%. But you to still have to wear a condom to protect you and your partner.
However, the only kind of sex that is 100% safe is no sex. Choosing not to have sex doesn’t mean you can’t have a good time or be intimate, but it does mean that you are avoiding any chance of becoming infected with the HIV virus.

MMD backs president Sata’s stance on the restoration of the Barotseland Agreement of 1964

66
MMD National Secretary Richard Kachingwe
MMD National Secretary Richard Kachingwe

The Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) has said that President Michael Sata’s cautious approach over the restoration the Barotseland Agreement of 1964 is justified.

MMD National Secretary, Richard Kachingwe said that the recommendation by the Commission of Inquiry on the Mongu Killings that the agreement be restored is a recipe for anarchy.

Major Kachingwe said that the MMD is in support of President Sata’s stance on the matter because it will ensure Zambia remains a unitary state.

And the Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes SACCORD Executive Director, Oscar Tembo says there is need for the government to allow dialogue over the matter.

Mr Tembo however, noted the need for the country to remain a unitary state.

Meanwhile the commission of inquiry into the January 14 Mongu riots has recommended to President Michael Sata that the Barotseland agreement of 1964 be restored.

The commission has also recommended that former Vice President George Kunda, former Home Affairs Minister Mkhondo Lungu and former Inspector General of Police Francis Kabonde be investigated on the various roles they played during the riots.

These recommendations were made by the commission when it submitted its report to President Michael Sata on Thursday at State House.

Commission Chairperson Rodger Chongwe has also submitted that nineteen people died on January 14 2011, contrary to earlier reports that indicated that only two people died.

Dr Chongwe says five people are still missing while fifteen others were wounded.

He says the abrogation of the Barosteland Agreement by Government was the main cause of the riots.

The commissioner says this has also continued to create friction between Barotse Royal Establishment and the Government.

Dr Chongwe also says the police acted unprofessionally by denying people of Western Province the right to hold public meetings.

And in response, President Sata has said Government will be reluctant to restore the Barosteland Agreement because doing so will give room to other native authorities to also seek a breakaway from the country.

President Sata however, says Government will investigate the brutality exhibited by the police during the riots.

Varun Beverage Company is seeking a court order to quash government’s decision to revoke its five year tax deferment.

The beverage company has contended that the revocation is in defiance of the rule of natural justice as the firm was not afforded an opportunity to be heard.

Varun Beverages, the manufacturers of Pepsi have also stated that the verdict is tainted with procedural impropriety.

The Company says it was not given a chance to make submissions before the Zambia Revenue Authority -ZRA- Commission of Inquiry which recommended the revocation of the tax deferment.

Varun Beverages has argued that it had legitimate expectation to continue to enjoy the tax relief following its investment of US$44 197 000

The Company notes that section 56 of the ZRA Act empowers a company with an investment over US$500 000 to enjoy tax exemption.

This is according to an application for judicial review filed in the Lusaka High Court.

Varun beverage was given a five year tax deferment by the previous regime in 2010 which has now been revoked by the Patriotic Front Government.

Hanif Adams and Emmanuel Munaile ponder challenging Kalusha, as Kamamga steps aside and blames Kambwili

66
Andrew Kamanga not contesting for the FAZ presidency

LUSAKA Dynamos owner Hanif Adams and former Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) vice-president Emmanuel Munaile are in respective consultations with various soccer administrators on challenging Kalusha Bwalya for the association’s presidency.

Adams said in an interview yesterday that some clubs have asked him to contest the presidency at the March 31 elective annual general meeting in Kitwe.

This would be the second time that Adams seeks election as FAZ president. His first attempt was in 2008 when he finished third to Kalusha and Teddy Mulonga.

Adams says the clubs want him to lead the association because of his vast experience in football administration.

He declined to name the clubs backing him but said some also want him to contest the vice-presidency.

Adams said, however, that he will make a decision on the matter this monthend. “I had forgotten about seeking election in FAZ but the calls by the clubs have changed things. However, I have not yet made up my mind because I am still consulting,” Adams said.

And Former Kabwe Warriors Chairperson, Andrew Kamanga has withdrawn his candidature for the Football Association of Zambia-FAZ-top job. Kamanga’s decision comes following what he has termed as provocative statements from Sports Minister, Chishimba Kambwili ahead of the elective AGM.

He said that he was disappointed with the Minister’s remarks. Kamanga adds that he will continue to serve football in other areas especially grassroots football and talent identification.

Below is Andrew Kamanga’s full statement

Response to Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili’s Press Comments against Andrew Kamanga

As a law-abiding citizen and recognising the Minister’s position of authority and my respect for the office he occupies, it is with much reluctance that I have to respond to the media statements attributed to Sports Minister Honourable Chishimba Kambwili in which he attacks me unfairly.

I have in the last few days attempted to meet Honourable Kambwili to express my unhappiness at his remarks but been unsuccessful, leaving me with no option but to use the same medium he used to attack me.

First, I have to say I find it shocking that Honourable Kambwili chose to attack me for no good reason and to suggest that I habour feelings of jealousy against FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya is, highly unfair, and quite ludicrous.

It is within the Minister’s rights to give praise where it is due as he did in lauding the achievements of the national soccer team in winning the Africa Cup, but to suggest that myself and others who have exercised our democratic right to vie for the FAZ presidency and other positions are driven by malice or jealousy or other ill-feelings is most unfair and unfortunate.

The Minister asserts that I should have been the first person to congratulate Kalusha. It is quite obvious that Honourable Kambwili was not aware that I did offer my heartfelt congratulations to the National Team, the FAZ Executive and the Government for the AFCON win in widely quoted press.

I watched every game in several public places and cheered every goal and victory.

Having said this, I do wish to make certain observations. The first one is that the AFCON win is for all Zambians and while those in FAZ office have the right to claim credit because the triumph has happened on their watch, this is the result of a lot of hard work by a lot people within and outside the FAZ, who have laboured for years to bring this about.

So to suggest the victory is the work of one man or a few individuals is to be narrow-minded and to lack the sense of gratitude and humility befitting of this historic occasion.

Anyone who knows of my relationship with Kalusha knows that I have nothing personal against him as an individual.

Honourable Kambwili’s statements are no doubt coloured by the events of 2010 when I and others took issue with Kalusha’s executive on a number of corporate governance issues.

The substance of these issues was provided by the decision of four executive members of the FAZ to leave the association to express their own disquiet over the same issues.

For the record, I wish to state that the issues we raised against the current FAZ Executive in 2010 which led to the formation of the Interim Committee and subsequently the National Football League were as follows: –

1) Lack of transparency in sponsorship deals – Super Sport, Nike, MTN, international friendlies, international player transfers, etc
2) General lack of accountability in managing affairs of the association
3) Failure to follow due process with regard to the FAZ Constitution
4) Failure to observe good corporate governance
5) The need to restructure the league to allow for sponsorship at lower levels as a way of reducing the cost of running football by clubs.
6) Perceived lack of fair play

These sentiments were backed by more than two-thirds of the FAZ membership who attended a meeting at the Intercontinental hotel in Lusaka to express their own unhappiness at these issues.

These issues have not disappeared simply because Zambia are now the African champions. Until they are addressed, they will continue to create disharmony in the FAZ family long after the euphoria of winning the Africa Cup has dissipated.

It is an open secret that I was always going to contest the position of FAZ President at the forthcoming AGM. We have put together a formidable team of quality administrators who are capable of meeting the future challenges of Zambian Football especially the running of the local league from Super League to Provincial Leagues at different Divisions.

This is something I and my team feel very passionately about, but we realise that to achieve the success we crave, we would need the goodwill of the Minister of Sport. Having read his statement about me, it would be wishful thinking and folly on my part to imagine we could ever count on him for this support.

Honourable Kambwili has clearly taken sides as we go to the elections. With this in my mind, I am sure the Minister will be happy to learn that I am no longer interested in running for FAZ Presidency.

I will however be praying for harmony and progress so that we can build on the success we have achieved so far.

A strong local league will always guarantee success at national level. It remains my hope and prayer that those who will be elected at the next FAZ AGM will take that path to develop our football.

I encourage all our supporters to lend their support to other candidates who have put their names forward for various positions to serve in FAZ. I will continue to serve football in other areas especially grassroots football and talent identification.

Signed

Andrew N Kamanga

Faz Critic Alex Mambwe To Stand At FAZ AGM

7

Medical Stars chairman Alex Mambwe has said he will be contesting for the position of Faz executive committee member at next month’s elective Faz annual general meeting.

Mambwe said he felt it was time to do away with petitions and let the vote do the talking as a way of protesting against the Kalusha Bwalya led executive whom he has battled against for the last five years.

“I’m also offering myself as one of the candidates and declaring my interest and stand as a committee member,” Mambwe said.

“We will campaign. There is nothing like quarreling here but going there to work for this country in terms of football.

“The honeymoon is over. For those members who feel they can continue let them show the members that they can work let them not hide behind the Africa Cup success because it will be very unfortunate.”

Mambwe who had raised petitions against Kalusha Bwalya in 2009 and 2010 said he was ready to accept defeat should he lose at the FAZ AGM.

“This is the right thing to do unlike raising petitions. Petitions are not ok from experience but this will be a litmus test for those who are serving in Faz,” Mambwe said.

Mambwe joins fellow football firebrand Keith Mwewa in standing for the Faz executive committee positions while Henschel Chitembeya is vying for the Faz vice president position.

Meanwhile, Kabwe Warriors president Andrew Kamanga has said he will not be challenging Kalusha for the Faz presidency.
